New Star Wars Attractions, AVATAR Land, and Disney Springs To Be Previewed at D23 Expo 2013

Walt

This week’s Disney Insider had an interesting tidbit about the parks and resorts area the the 2013 D23 Expo:

We’re also going to be doing sneak peeks at upcoming projects – including Disney Springs, the reimagining of Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World Resort. There will be teasers for new attractions based on Avatar and Star Wars that we’re working on now for the Disney Parks. We’ll have a play test for a project called Adventure Trading Company, and there will be an outlet of Mickey’s of Glendale, the Imagineering Cast Member store, because like all great attractions we end with a gift shop!

So it doesn’t seem there will be any major announcements, but there at least will be some sort of preview of AVATAR Land for Disney’s Animal Kingdom and possibly a reveal of some new Star Wars attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. At the very least, we will have more solid details on the Disney Springs project to talk about.

WDWNT Will be there on the scene at the D23 Expo, so stay tuned for coverage coming August 9th-11th, 2013.

If you are as excited about this new drama as I am, then you’ll want to be at the D23 Expo to see the Premiere Episode one month before its debut! Yes, that’s right; D23 Expo guests will have the chance to be the first to view this latest drama, based on Marvel’s The Avengers, in the D23 Expo Arena on Sunday, August 11th at 3:00 pm, introduced by Marvel’s Head of Television & Series executive producer Jeph Loeb.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D picks up where the Marvel’s The Avengers battle in New York ended. Since the public now knows all about the Avengers and the existence of superheroes, Agent Phil Coulson has put together a small group of agents from the worldwide law enforcement organization known as the Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division, or more easily said, S.H.I.E.L.D. Their mission is to protect the ordinary from the extraordinary by investigating all that is strange and unknown around the world.

D23 Releases Images from Walt Disney’s Personal Camera

D23 Releases Images from Walt’s Camera

By Michael Truskowski

I have never really spent much time in the D23 website despite being a charter member. I just didn’t find a whole lot of content that was interesting. But Disney has finally addressed this with a revamped, members only section of the website.

Don’t want to join D23? Now you can get a free membership that grants you access to the website without costing you a single dollar. Of course, if you want the magazine, access to special events, and other benefits from your membership, you still need to pay the annual fee. But if you are simply curious about the web content, there really is no reason not to sign up.

As a way of announcing the new site (and driving traffic to it), they released several never before seen images of Walt, taken with his own personal camera. Two of the images were released to the general public.

The first shows Walt in June 1951 on a family trip to Denmark. (Although we have to wonder, whose camera is Walt holding if this picture was captured with Walt’s camera?)

Walt D23 1

The second shows a younger (1940’s) Walt asleep in his lawn on some sort of lounge mat, thing. It is always interesting to see someone famous when their guard is down, living their normal life. Think of every other image of Walt you have ever seen. He is almost always working. We tend to think of him now as just being Disney the company (which happens when you give your name to what ends up being one of the largest companies in the world). But this photo reminds us all that he was, in many ways, just like us.

Walt D23 2

Some of the other photos on the D23 website include photos of the girls on the carousel. Yes, those girls on that carousel. You know, the one which served as the inspiration for Walt to build Disneyland. Also in one of the carousel photos is a very young Roy E. Disney. Another part of Walt’s life that readers of this are no doubt aware of is the Carolwood Pacific railroad, Walt’s backyard train, and the predecessor to the Disneyland and Walt Disney World Railroads. There are also several photos of his wife Lillian, who we do not get to see nearly as often as her husband.

What I love about these photos is that the really do look like someone’s family photos, not studio publicity pictures. It is an interesting mix of history and human interest. It is accessible at D23.com as a part of the D’scovered series. If you have not been around the D23 site lately, it is worth a trip back. If you have never been there, go grab a free membership and take a look around.

ESPN Films to Offer Sneak Preview at D23 Expo

ESPN Films to Offer Sneak Preview at D23 Expo

Fawcett, Sobrero and Venturini celebrate

If you’re like me, sports are an integral part of everyday life. I wake up in the morning and check out the latest sports news on my phone while still lying in bed. Next, I get ready for the day and enjoy a cup of coffee while watching the sports headlines on TV. As I drive to work, I listen to more sports headlines on the radio. When I get to work, I settle into my routine of checking scores, talking with my coworkers, and even receiving text updates on (you guessed it) sports. Also, if you’re like me, you’re familiar with ESPN Films, the production company that is dedicated to telling true stories of exciting, tear-jerking, and heroic moments in sports. The same company is well-known for its 30 for 30 series that celebrated ESPN’s thirtieth anniversary by producing 30 documentaries covering a wide range of great moments from sports lore and athletes’ careers including Wayne Gretzky’s trade to the LA Kings, George Steinbrenner’s ownership of the Yankees, and Michael Jordan’s  stint in baseball (my personal favorite).

Now, ESPN Films is introducing a new series called Nine for IX. This series will be produced in recognition of the 40th anniversary of Title IX and will air over nine consecutive Thursdays at 8 PM starting on July 2nd with a documentary covering Venus Williams. The series will also cover other great female sports figures such as the legendary coach, Pat Summit and Sheryl Swoops, who many call the female Michael Jordan. Also included in the Nine for IX lineup is an installment covering the US Women’s National Soccer Team at the 1999 World Cup. Entitled The ‘99ers, this documentary covers the team’s penalty kick shootout victory over China to win the world cup and inspire the world. The film also includes behind-the-scenes footage that candidly helps to tell the story from the players’ point of view. By reuniting players from the 1999 team and by including players from the current team, The ‘99ers also takes a look into how women’s sports have changed since that day in 1999.

On August 11 at this year’s D23 Expo, attendees will have a chance to see an exclusive screening of the film as part of the Ultimate Disney Fan Event. The screening will also include a special Q&A session with the film’s director Erin Leyden and producer Julie Foudy. This will be a great opportunity of sports fans and movie buffs alike as it will provide insight on this epic moment in sports history and also the process of creating a sports documentary.

The screening will take place in Stage 28 at the Anaheim Convention Center on Sunday, August 11 at 2:30 PM PT.

Complete List of 2013 Disney Legends to be Inducted at the D23 Expo

BURBANK, Calif. – July 10, 2013 – Monsters Inc. and Monsters University stars Billy Crystal and John Goodman, technology visionary Steve Jobs, television icon Dick Clark and other beloved contributors to the Disney legacy will be named and honored as official Disney Legends during the D23 Expo 2013 at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 10, in the D23 Expo Arena at the Anaheim Convention Center.

The Disney Legends Awards program is a 26-year tradition of The Walt Disney Company. The three-day D23 Expo provides a rare opportunity for the public to be a part of the always touching and memorable presentation, hosted by noted television personality Tom Bergeron (host of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars and America’s Funniest Home Videos).

“The Disney Legend Award is our highest and most coveted honor,” said Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger. “It’s reserved for the extraordinary visionaries and artists behind the Disney magic, the men and women who push the limits of innovation and creativity to ensure Disney remains truly special. The eight Legends we honor this year helped create some of our most beloved characters along with exciting new worlds and thrilling attractions. They also entertained millions of people and expanded our definition of what’s possible. They are all indelible parts of our legacy, and we are proud to recognize them as true Disney Legends.”

The 2013 Disney Legends Award honorees (listed alphabetically) are:

TONY BAXTER has developed beloved Disney attractions including Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Journey Into Imagination, Splash Mountain, and countless more over the course of his 43-year career with Walt Disney Imagineering. Revered by Disney fans, he is best known for his commitment to storytelling, attention to detail, and ability to develop new ideas and attractions by combining time-tested design practices with modern technology.

COLLIN CAMPBELL touched almost every part of the Walt Disney Company, from animated classics to legendary theme park attractions, with stints in live action film and television. Collin’s work with Walt Disney Imagineering includes the development of Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, Pirates of the Caribbean, as well as concept illustrations of Magic Kingdom Park and Epcot Center.

DICK CLARK brought rock and roll to 40 million homes across the country with the national debut of American Bandstand on ABC in 1958. He went on to produce game shows, award shows including the Golden Globes® and the Academy of Country Music Awards, comedy specials movies, and other popular television specials. Dick might best be remembered, however, as the host of ABC’s annual Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve from 1973 until 2011.

BILLY CRYSTAL is an acclaimed actor who lends his voice to Mike Wazowski, the frenetic, green cyclopean monster from Monsters Inc. and Monsters University. Best known for his memorable roles in When Harry Met Sally…, The Princess Bride, and City Slickers, Billy, who has won six Emmy Awards and one Tony Award, has also been a fixture on ABC television, where he hosted the Academy Awards® broadcast nine times and found his breakthrough role as Jodie Dallas on Soap from 1977-81.

STEVE JOBS changed the world of consumer electronics as the founder of Apple, and was known throughout the world for his visionary attitude and penchant for innovation. He was an early investor and chief executive of Pixar, and became the Walt Disney Company’s largest shareholder overnight when it acquired Pixar Animation Studios in 2006. That same year, he joined the Disney board of directors, and remained a valuable sounding board and advisor to the company until his passing in 2011.

GLEN KEANE has brought to life many of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ most popular characters. Since becoming a Disney animator in 1974, he has animated classic Disney characters such as Penny in The Rescuers, Elliott in Pete’s Dragon, Ratigan in The Great Mouse Detective, the Beast in Beauty and the Beast, and the titular characters in The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Pocahontas, and Tarzan. In 2010, Glen served as Executive Producer and Animation Supervisor for Tangled, a story he developed for more than ten years.

ED WYNN, a comedian whose career began on Broadway in the early 1900s, appeared in numerous Disney classics of the 1960s, including Mary Poppins, Babes in Toyland, That Darn Cat, The Absent-Minded Professor, and Son of Flubber. Fans of Disney animation know him as the manic and distinctive voice of the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland.

Each honoree receives a two-foot-tall bronze Disney Legends sculpture that signifies the imagination, creativity and magic they have brought to the Company. Disney Legends Award recipients also participate in a handprint ceremony, and their bronzed prints will be displayed in the Disney Legends Plaza at the Company’s Burbank headquarters.

Admission to the ceremony will be on a first-come, first-served basis and is included in the price of a ticket to the D23 Expo. In addition to the 4,000-seat D23 Expo Arena, the ceremony will be simulcast into a 2,000-seat overflow theater inside the Convention Center.

The first Disney Legend, actor Fred MacMurray (The Shaggy Dog, The Absent-Minded Professor, The Happiest Millionaire), was named in 1987. Including this year’s honorees, a total of 237 Disney Legends have been named. Past Disney Legends include Tim Allen, Robin Williams, Julie Andrews, Howard Ashman, Regis Philbin, Annette Funicello, Peter Jennings, Angela Lansbury, Steve Martin, Alan Menken, Hayley Mills, Fess Parker, Sir Tim Rice, Dick Van Dyke and Barbara Walters. At the inaugural D23 Expo in 2009, the Legends Awards ceremony, which honored Robin Williams, Beatrice Arthur, Estelle Getty, Rue McLanahan, Betty White, Tony Anselmo, Bill Farmer, Harry Archinal, Don Iwerks and Leota Toombs Thomas, was presented to thousands of Disney fans for the first time.
