Power Outage Cripples Fantasyland and Toontown at Disneyland During One of the Busiest Days of the Year

A transformer failure at the Disneyland Resort resulted in loss of power to much of Fantasyland and Mickey’s Toontown Wednesday afternoon December 27th, in the middle of one of the busiest days of the year.

 width=

According to ABC7.com, the local ABC affiliate in Los Angeles, reported that a Disneyland spokesperson said guests were being evacuated from “about a dozen” rides, including the Monorail, which, interestingly, isn’t technically a Fantasyland or Toontown attraction.

As of 3pm PST (6pm EST), power to much of the park had been restored, with all of Toontown plus some Fantasyland attractions, including “it’s a small world” which is currently sporting its holiday overlay.

At least one guest paid way too much for Disneyland tickets and then complained they weren’t offering refunds when the rest of the park, as well as Disney California Adventure, were open and operating.

Aladdin’s Oasis/Tahitian Terrace Restaurant Set to Return to Disneyland Park

Permits filed by Disney to the City of Anaheim seem to hint at a rehab for Aladdin’s Oasis in Adventureland at Disneyland.

 width=

The permit states that the stage will be fixed up and expanded, the restrooms refurbished, and exterior walls altered and rethemed for the addition of a new pedestrian ramp.

This space opened as an Aladdin themed dinner show in 1993, but in 1995 became a restaurant-only location for the busiest park days. Now Aladdin’s Oasis serves as a meet & greet location and a space for occasional events. Prior to all of this, it was home to the Tahitian Terrace dinner show.

 width=

Does this mean that a dinner show is returning to Aladdin’s Oasis, or will it be used in some other dining capacity (the space was used for “on-the-go” parade packages as recently as this year).

WDWNT’s Top 7 Things That Happened at Disney Parks in 2017

As 2017 comes to a close, we look back at some of the greatest moments in Disney Parks this year. From new restaurants and attractions, to festivals and more, 2017 added so much to the Disney Parks we love. So, in no particular order, here are the seven (yeah,…. seven) best things from 2017 (in our opinions, of course).

Be sure to read more about each of them by clicking their titles.

Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout!

Mission: Breakout had many fans upset when news broke that DCA’s Tower of Terror would be gone for good, but after the attraction opened in May, many people’s opinions quickly changed. Not only is Guardians of the Galaxy a worthy replacement for Tower of Terror, but it might even be a superior one. Either way, it’s a welcomed new attraction that takes Disney’s unique drop tower ride and adds a ton of charm the way only Disney knows how.

Geyser Point at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge

What’s not to love about Geyser Point Grill and Bar? This new restaurant offers fantastic food and drink options, breathtaking views of Bay Lake, and a cozy outdoor environment that will surely please guests. With solid menu prices and being just a boat ride away from Magic Kingdom, Geyser Point has quickly become one of our favorite spots on property.

 width=

Reopening of the Disneyland Railroad with New Magic

After a lengthy bit of downtime, the Disneyland Railroad reopened this summer with new and enhanced scenes that have been a hit with guests. Both the Grand Canyon and Primeval World dioramas were restored to their original glory, with each scene looking fresh and having the added benefit of some new aesthetic touches. This seminal attraction has been preserved to inspire and entertain new generations of guests, while the new area north of the Rivers of America is a beautiful new vista.

Happily Ever After Nighttime Spectacular

When people heard that Wishes was going to end at Magic Kingdom, there was a lot of concern, and rightfully so. However, Happily Ever After debuted in May and won the hearts of Disney fans from all corners of the world. With its outstanding soundtrack, impressive new technologies, unrelenting usage of pyrotechnics, and thoughtful use of beloved Disney IPs, Happily Ever After is perhaps the new greatest Disney fireworks show to date.

Opening of Pandora – The World of Avatar

It took nearly seven years from the time it was announced, but in 2017 Pandora – The World of Avatar finally opened at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. After all the years it took, the money invested, and confusion among fans, was Pandora worth it? The answer is a resounding yes! Pandora proves that with the proper resources, attention, and passion, Disney can still create something so unfamiliar and amazing that they further raise the bar for what a theme park can and should be. The World of Avatar is absolutely stunning, and houses a phenomenal restaurant, an incredibly lifelike Audio-Animatronic, and one of the most groundbreaking attractions ever conceived. Thanks to Pandora, 2017 has been the biggest year yet in theme park innovation.

Halloween Comes to Disney California Adventure

At the D23 Expo in July Disney announced that for the first time, Disney California Adventure would be celebrating the Halloween season in a big way. Not only did the park do a wonderful job with the project, but they’ve created what is being seen as one of the most memorable Halloween celebrations ever in a theme park. Just look at Cars Land’s Haul-O-Ween celebration, never mind the new decorations on Buena Vista Street and the Monsters After Dark overlay of Guardians of the Galaxy. It’s reason enough to make the trip out to Disneyland Resort.

Inaugural Year of Epcot’s Festival of the Arts

2017 started out strong with the inaugural year of the International Festival of the Arts at Epcot. The festival sets itself apart from the long running Flower and Garden and Food and Wine festivals by offering some of the best entertainment, food, and exhibits we’ve seen yet at an Epcot festival. While not quite perfect, the Festival of the Arts is a welcomed addition to Epcot, and we can’t wait to see it evolve over the coming years.

 width=

As you can see, 2017 has been quite a great year for Disney Parks fans. With so many new and thoughtful changes, 2017 ends with the promise of a stronger and better Disney experience for all guests for years to come.

CONCEPT ART: New Scenes To Debut in Fantasmic When It Returns to Disneyland This Summer

 width=

It’s hard to believe that Fantasmic! is 25 years old tomorrow. The show premiered at Disneyland’s Rivers of America on May 13, 1992 and quickly became a guest favorite. While the show has undergone upgrades over the years, including a new sound system in 2007, and a completely new lighting package in 2008.

However, the show is currently undergoing its biggest makeover yet. When it returns this summer, the show will still retain its storyline, fanfare, and theme song, but quite a bit will be new. The mist screens will be upgraded and coupled with state of the art projectors to provide brighter, more vibrant visuals with better clarity than ever before. What may be the biggest change, however, is the addition of brand new show scenes featuring Aladdin, The Lion King, Tangled, and Pirates of the Caribbean.

The concept art above shows one of the dazzling new scenes, where Aladdin and Jasmine are floating over a bed of fog on their flying carpet during “A Whole New World.”

A return date for the show has not yet been announced, but stay tuned to WDW News Today for more information about the show’s premiere in the coming weeks.

The Rock Working with Disney Imagineering to Update The Jungle Cruise Attraction for Upcoming Film

“The Rock” Dwayne Johnson was already announced to be a part of Disney’s upcoming film based on The Jungle Cruise, but it seems he will also have a role in changing the attraction at Disney Parks…

Grateful SOB to have Walt and Mickey watching over my shoulder as @danygarciaco and I embark on this amazing project. For our big #JungleCruise creative meeting at DISNEY’s highly secure R&D facilities, me and @danygarciaco were escorted into THE VAULT. A legitimate vault where all of Disney’s biggest secrets and plans are kept. Curtains were pulled back for us to reveal the actual drawn up plans that Walt Disney had his brother, Roy Disney take to New York to present to the bankers in 1950 for the potential loan to build what’s now known as Disney Land. Cant imagine what that meeting with bankers was like. Roy: Alright gentlemen, so me and my brother Walt, want to build the greatest multiple theme park attraction in the world. Banker: Oh that seems fun, Mr. Disney. Roy: *smiles in a playful mischievous manner, Oh yes my good man, it will have a few things that are in fact, fun. Well, clearly I don’t know how the hell men were actually talking in the 50’s, but what I do know is being able to star in and produce #JungleCruise is a dream come true. BUT what takes this to the next level, is that we’ll partner with Disney’s brilliant Imagineers to help re-engineer and re-design the #JungleCruise ride in all the Disney theme parks around the world. A very special opportunity for us and our @sevenbucksprod to create an unforgettable and fun EXPERIENCE for families around the world. And as Walt Disney himself would say… it’s magical. Next step is finding our visionary director. Exciting times. #JungleCruise #TheExperience #DisneyStudios #Imagineers #SevenBucksProds #WaltAndRockWouldveBeenBesties #AndWorkoutBuddies #WaltWouldveLovedMyJackedUpPickUpTruck ????????????

It is assumed any changes would be tied into the film, but it is interesting that these changes will be made at some point ahead of the film’s release and at every Disney Resort that has the attraction apparently.

We’ll keep you in the loop as more information on this story becomes available.

REVIEW: Blue Bayou Has Disneyland Charm, But Food to Forget

The Blue Bayou is the most legendary and renowned restaurant at Disneyland (not counting the private Club 33), but why is that? It’s undoubtedly for the ambiance, with seating overlooking the bayou as boats from Pirates of the Caribbean slow fully list by. I’ve been here on four occasions over the years, and only one of those meals did I think was worth the price.

 width=

I will warn you that these won’t be the best pictures we have posted, as we did not want to use a flash inside of the dark restaurant. Regardless, we will do our best to guide you through the menu via text.

Blue Bayou Menu (50th Anniversary Edition)

We visited Blue Bayou on March 17, the evening before the 50th Anniversary. The special menu and entrees were available for several days around the anniversary date, but we don’t know exactly when they reverted to the regular menu.

 width=

 width=

Complimentary Bread

 width=

Honestly, this was probably the highlight of the meal. It was warm and fresh, and if that’s a highlight of the meal, well then, we are probably in trouble moving forward in this review.

Blue Bayou House Salad

 width=

The house salad was fine if you like blue cheese, but nothing special.

New Orleans Gumbo

 width=

The gumbo is very good, as it always is. But there’s no reason to come to Blue Bayou for the gumbo when the same thing is served at the Royal Street Verandah. If you do have to chose between this and the salad, I would choose gumbo.

Broiled Filet Mignon ($46)

 width=

Served with Blue Bayou Au Gratin Potatoes, Seasonal Vegetables, and Béarnaise Sauce. Choice of Blue Bayou House Salad or Cup of our signature New Orleans Gumbo

The filet was the best entree out of those we ordered. If everyone in your party wants a filet, then you probably won’t be as disappointed in Blue Bayou as we were.

Royal Street Seafood Jambalaya ($35)

 width=

A robust combination of Shrimp, Sustainable Fish, Tasso Ham, Andouille Sausage, and Chicken with Louisiana Popcorn Rice. Choice of Blue Bayou House Salad or Cup of our signature New Orleans Gumbo

The jambalaya was good, but not great. It’s a decent budget option, but your money would be better spent elsewhere.

Fruits De Mer ($42)

 width=
Pan Seared Red Snapper, Sautéed Shrimp, Scallop, and Hush Puppy, served on a bed of Spinach with Spicy Shrimp Sauce and Remoulade

This limited time dish (which may or may not still be available) was solid, but not fantastic. While nothing on the plate was bad, none of it tasted any better than anything you would order at a Red Lobster. Don’t get me wrong, I like Red Lobster, but I don’t want a $42.00 Red Lobster entree at Disneyland. The hush puppy was very good, too bad they only gave you one.

Bone-In Rib-Eye ($44)

 width=

Blue Bayou House-made Rub, Seasonal Vegetables, and White Cheddar-Smoked gouda Mac and Cheese. Choice of Blue Bayou House Salad or Cup of our signature New Orleans Gumbo

This was not a great steak. It was a little tough and the flavor was almost nonexistent. If you want steak at Disneyland Resort, I’d highly recommend getting the filet instead or going to Steakhouse 55.

OVERALL

The Blue Bayou is a legendary restaurant and very difficult to get into compared to most other restaurants around the Disneyland Resort. However, the selling point here is not the food. Similar to Cinderella’s Royal Table at WDW’s Magic Kingdom, the draw here is the location and the ambiance. Much better meals can be had at Carthay Circle, Napa Rose, and even Steakhouse 55. If you’ve never been to Blue Bayou, it may be worth going once just for the experience, but the food is certainly no reason to come back for a repeat visit.
