Disney just made the following release to cast members, breaking down all of the new additions and changes coming to Disney Springs:

Town Center, Disney Springs’ newest neighborhood, will offer a sophisticated mix of shopping and dining along with a promenade where Guests can relax, refresh and reconnect with each other. Town Center features Spanish “Revival” style architecture, drawing from a rich history of explorers that landed in Florida centuries ago.

TOWN CENTER RETAIL

The following Town Center shops are slated to open in phases beginning May 15:

  • Anthropologie: Anthropologie’s unique and eclectic product assortment includes women’s casual apparel and accessories, intimates, shoes, beauty, home furnishings and a diverse array of gifts and decorative items.
  • LACOSTE: Since the very first polo shirt was created in 1933, LACOSTE relies on its authentic sportive roots to spring optimism and elegance on the world thanks to a unique and original lifestyle for women, men and children and offers a range of products: apparel, leather goods, fragrances, footwear, eyewear, homewear, watches and underwear.
  • kate spade new york: Crisp color, graphic prints and playful sophistication are the hallmarks of kate spade new york.   • Sephora: The new Disney Springs Sephora store will offer guests the opportunity to try, test, and play with thousands of products from classic and up-and-coming cosmetic and fragrance brands. Sephora at Disney Springs will feature the latest in beauty services and technology at their expanded Sephora Beauty Studio including Mini Makeovers, Sephora + Pantone Color IQ and complimentary Beauty Classes.

TOWN CENTER DINING

Also announced today as coming to Disney Springs are several new dining venues at Town Center overlooking The Spring, the heart and soul of the property.

At D-Luxe Burger, a Disney owned and operated concept, burger aficionados are in for a treat with gourmet burgers made from a signature blend of beef, unique toppings and freshly baked buns. All-natural chicken and vegetarian burgers round out the menu with hand-cut fries and house-made dipping sauces as the perfect complement. Artisanal gelato shakes (non-alcoholic and alcoholic) and floats will also be featured, as well as hard sodas, draft beer and cider.

Celebrating the art of pastry making, Amorette’s Patisserie features elements of an artist’s loft and art gallery side-by-side within the comforts of a small town patisserie. Amorette’s means “little loves,” which is evident in the care poured into creating the shop’s sweet treats. Timeless classic and contemporary pastries are the stars in this unique high-end pastry shop owned and operated by Disney. Custom cakes are truly a work of art and are available for immediate purchase or for pre-order. Champagne selections by the glass and handcrafted hot chocolates only a pastry artist could create allow for a truly indulgent experience.

These venues are in addition to the new restaurants currently being built in Town Center by award-winning celebrity chefs.

The newest contemporary Mexican-themed restaurant joining Disney Springs has a new name. Tablas Frontera will delight friends, family and food-lovers with exciting flavors and a contemporary Mexican experience. Warm colors, an open kitchen and a lively atmosphere frame an inviting exploration of the many delights from the kitchen of renowned chef Rick Bayless. The delicious, enticing presentation of grilled meats, seafood and vegetables served on planks (tablas) promote sharing and togetherness.

Homecoming — Florida Kitchen and Shine Bar by Chef Art Smith will showcase farm-to-fork cuisine inspired by the Sunshine State. The menu will feature Southern favorites like homemade pimento cheese, deviled eggs, low country shrimp and grits, and fried chicken.

ADDITIONAL ENHANCEMENTS

As Guests enter Town Center around The Spring area, they will be warmly greeted at theWelcome Center, a place where Guests can relax and take in the beauty of the clear water with lush landscape along the water’s edge. Themed to early Florida settlements, the architecture around The Spring is based on timber frame structures that were once used in the citrus and ranching industries.

Over in the Marketplace, Fulton’s Crab House will open a new concept this fall. The re-imagined restaurant will welcome Guests with a bow to stern update including interiors reflecting the crisp luxury of modern yachting, and new spaces include a lushly appointed rooftop lounge overlooking Disney Springs, outdoor waterfront bar featuring a “build your own” fish boil and private dining areas. The new menu stars fresh seafood with an oyster shucking bar, Florida stone crab and Alaskan king crab, with hearty steaks and chops, as well as classic and curated cocktails.

In addition, Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique will move from its current location at World of Disney into a new and expanded location near Once Upon a Toy in the Disney Springs Marketplace. Guests ages 3-12 will receive the royal treatment, getting made up like their favorite Disney princess with the help of their own Fairy Godmother-in-Training. This country parlor-inspired location will include an expanded salon to welcome royal attendees and a uniquely designed photo room to capture memories.

Budget Cuts Continue at Walt Disney World, Still No Statement from Disney

Despite Disney’s refusal to make comment, heavy budget cuts continue at the domestic parks. In just the last few days, there have been multiple reports of many understaffed positions at the parks, leading to longer lines at restaurants, shops and resort front desks. These reports come after WDWNT.com ran a story about possible labor cuts coming to the U.S. parks dues to the Shanghai Disneyland project being over time and budget, as well as continuing losses at Disneyland Resort Paris.

In addition,  a spokesperson for the Actors’ Equity Association has now come out and stated that 10 of the 29 Streetmosphere performers at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will not have their contracts renewed. Nine of the performers are full-time, while one works part-time. The performers will conclude their run at the park in mid-April.

Upon visiting the Magic Kingdom this weekend, it was also made clear that the Fairy Godmother meet and greet has been cut as well. Some other meet and greets around the resort have also been cut lately, most noticeably Princess Aurora at Epcot. Others are rumored to be cut in the weeks ahead.

Rumors also indicate that TradNation, the new performing group at Epcot is being cut in April, but that could be unrelated to budgetary concerns.

Reservations Now Open for California Food & Wine Festival Premium Experiences

In just one month, Disney California Adventure park will be transforming for the Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival, taking place weekends during the month of April. Today, Disney released info on chef demonstrations, seminars, celebrity chef appearances and more.

Culinary Demonstrations featuring some of the best chefs in the industry, including some of your favorites from the Disneyland Resort, will take place on the Backlot Stage in Hollywood Land. Don’t miss your chance to learn a new technique during these 30-minute complimentary presentations. Seating is limited, so be sure to arrive early.

Conducted in the relaxing setting of the Sonoma Terrace at the Golden Vine Winery, Beverage Seminars are fun and informative; sure to quench your thirst for knowledge about wine, beer and spirits. The 45-minute seminars include up to 3 tastings. Cost is $15 per person plus tax.

Stage 17 in Hollywood Land will be host to the Celebrity Kitchen. See some of the biggest names of the culinary world, including superstar chefs Guy Fieri, Graham Elliot, Claudia Sandoval, Robert Irvine and Disneyland Resort Signature Dining Chef Andrew Sutton, as they share tips, treasured recipes and behind-the-scenes-stories while they show you how to create their personal favorite dishes. An autograph signing will follow each chef appearance. Cost is $99 per person, plus tax and gratuity.

Special Tip: Disneyland Resort Annual Passholders have the opportunity to enjoy a special Celebrity Kitchen VIP Experience, which includes premium seating, priority access for the autograph session, plus a special gift. Cost is $149 plus tax and gratuity.

BREAKING: ‘Rivers of Light’ To Debut April 22 at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Today, the Disney Parks Blog announced that Rivers of Light will officially debut on April 22:

Today we’re happy to share that Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s first-ever night-time show, “Rivers of Light,” will officially debut at the park on April 22.

The show, set on Discovery River in the Asia section of the park, will depict an ancient lantern festival guided by two storytellers who call forth four animal Spirit Guides: an Asian Tiger, Tropical Turtle, African Elephant and Great Horned Owl. These Spirit Guides return at different points during the show to lead the audience through their journey through the Rivers of Light.

Special Preview of The Jungle Book Coming to Disney Parks

Beginning March 18, guests visiting Disney Parks will be able to catch a preview of scenes from Disney’s all-new live-action adventure “The Jungle Book” in sneak peeks planned for Disney California Adventure park and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, each with a special introduction by Director Jon Favreau that pays homage to Walt Disney, the original animated classic and Disney’s legacy of innovative storytelling.

At Disney California Adventure park, the preview of “The Jungle Book” will be presented at the Bug’s Life Theater with special in-theater effects. Guests at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will get to see this advance look at clips from the film, as part of the Walt Disney: One Man’s Dream attraction on Mickey Avenue.

Directed by Jon Favreau (“Iron Man”), based on Rudyard Kipling’s timeless stories and inspired by Disney’s classic animated film, “The Jungle Book” is an epic adventure about Mowgli, a man-cub who’s been raised by a family of wolves. Featuring an all-star cast, “The Jungle Book” seamlessly blends live-action with photorealistic CGI animals and environments, using up-to-the-minute technology and storytelling techniques to immerse audiences in an enchanting and lush world.

California Adventure’s “Frozen – Live at the Hyperion” Stage Musical Gets Opening Date, Sing-Along Closing

“Frozen – Live at the Hyperion,” the new musical adaptation based on Disney’s blockbuster animated film, will officially open at the Hyperion Theater at Disney California Adventure park on May 27, 2016.

The Creative Entertainment team, led by Walt Disney Imagineering Creative Entertainment Portfolio Executive Dana Harrel, is hard at work bringing to the stage a production that stays true to the emotional journey of Anna and Elsa while presenting a unique take on the material through elaborate costumes and sets, stunning special effects and show-stopping production numbers. To bring this vision to life, Dana and her team are collaborating with some of the most noted talents working in theater today including Director Liesl Tommy (Broadway’s “Eclipsed”), Writer Chad Beguelin (Tony Award® nominee for “Disney’s Aladdin” and “The Wedding Singer”), Musical Supervisor and Arranger Jason Michael Webb (Musical Director for Broadway’s “The Color Purple”), Puppet Designer Michael Curry (Tony Award® winner for “Disney’s The Lion King”) and more.

Ginnifer Goodwin Wants Zootopia to be a New Land at Disney Parks

If you read my review of Zootopia earlier this week, you no doubt know that I absolutely love this film. While somewhat embarrassing to admit, by the opening night of the film last evening, I had already seen the movie 4 times and I’m not completely certain that I won’t be seeing it again before it leaves theaters honestly. While I love the animated films of the Walt Disney Company, my first love has always been the theme parks, so when I see a new animated movie, I often drift into a daydream and think about what it could possibly bring in a three-dimensional environment. Needless to say with how much I loved the film, I REALLY, REALLY want to see Zootopia at the domestic theme parks, but Ginnifer Goodwin (voice of Judy Hopps) definitely wants it more…

Goodwin is the voice of Judy Hopps, the optimistic first-ever Bunny cop of the ZPD

Goodwin (who also stars in ABC’s Once Upon a Time) is a lifelong Disney fan and was even tapped to help open New Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom back in 2012. Ginnifer has been waiting on the call to be a Disney animated character her entire career and literally accepted the job the second John Lasseter began to ask her over the phone. Goodwin admittedly calls Lasseter her personal “Walt Disney”, and is constantly “bugging” him (in her own words) to let her remain at the Disney studios is some capacity for the rest of her career. However, she is also constantly “bugging” John to make Zootopia a reality at Disneyland.

Ginnifer admittedly visits Disneyland at least once a month (which makes her pretty endearing to this Disney fan), her favorite attraction being the Haunted Mansion, but it sounds like she could very easily have a new favorite attraction should the world of Zootopia come to life at Disney Parks. When I asked Goodwin about if she would like Zootopia in the parks and what kind of presence it should have, she excitedly told me she wanted a Zootopia-land, “I want all of the world!”

Since she visits Disneyland at least once a month, the voice of the ever-optimistic Judy Hopps obviously is dreaming of the Cars Land treatment for her first full-length Disney animated feature. After seeing the movie a few times, I’m in complete agreement. While I don’t necessarily think Zootopia would be a great fit for Disneyland Park or Disney California Adventure, I think Disney’s Animal Kingdom will be itching for a more kid-friendly world after the opening of Pandora: The World of AVATAR next year, a niche that could easily be filled by, oh, let’s say a sprawling, mammal-filled metropolis?

The level of detail in the world seen in the movie would undoubtedly translate amazingly to the theme park realm, so I have no doubt after you see Zootopia that you will be dreaming of visiting Tundra Town or Sahara Square someday soon on a Disney vacation. Well, you can take solace in knowing that Ginnifer Goodwin wants that too.

Disney Stuck on the Drawing Board: Beastly Kingdom

In anticipation for the completion and opening of Pandora: The World of Avatar in 2017, it seemed appropriate to look back at an original plan that would have occupied the now future space that Avatar will inhabit. It seems time to resurrect the Stuck on the Drawingboard series.

Of all of the lands of Animal Kingdom that were operational on opening day on April 22, 1998, there was planned to be a land that visitors were both hopeful and excited to see constructed. Sadly that expansion never came, and now the land that replaced it. is being transformed into Pandora: The World of Avatar.

Beastly Kingdom was immediately a rock-solid plan in the minds of Disney executives. Animal Kingdom was supposed to feature animals of all types; those in real-life, those who walked the planet but have become extinct, and finally animals of the mystical realm. These plans would have placed Beastly Kingdom squarely in the area now inhabited by Camp Minnie-Mickey. What people do not know, is that Camp Minnie-Mickey had a remnant of the un-built Beastly Kingdom: A dragon shaped fountain within its boundaries. The plan of Beastly Kingdom was to create an area for all mythical and fantastical animals including Unicorns, Dragons, and sea monsters among others.

The land would have been broken up into two distinct areas: A good “realm” and an evil “realm”. Each of these “realms” of Beastly Kingdom would have a “weenie” or landmark distinguishing itself from the other. The good side would feature an attraction called Quest of the Unicorn, as well as a Fantasia styled boat ride. The evil side of Beastly Kingdom would have featured Dragon Tower, an old castle in ruins inhabited by a fire breathing Dragon. As such the land would have been one of the focal points of the park, and likely would have kept Animal Kingdom from its initial failures.

The area never came to be, and much to do with budgeting and finances. Rumor has it that Michael Eisner had to choose between the Beastly Kingdom area and the Dinoland area as costs soared on the park. Seeing as Disney was in production of the movie DINOSAUR, whcih was a pet project of Esiner’s and already had hundreds of millions of dollars sunk into it, they believed that would be the better land to create and promote (How did that film do?). As such Camp Minnie-Mickey was put in as a last minute placeholder so they could come back to the project later. Many of the Imagineers involved with the project eventually left the company in some sort of disgust at the failure of the construction amid the planning and man hours used in creation. Many of these Imagineers found their way to Universal, and were involved and used most elements from Beastly Kingdom in the creation of The Lost Continent. Proof of this was found in Dueling Dragons (Now known as Dragon Challenge) as the concept of two dueling dragons within a ruined castle was lifted straight from the Animal Kingdom plans.

In an interesting aside, maybe Disney executives had the right idea, as the land that former imagineers created has since been “swallowed” by the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and was never really all that popular with guests (nor was the park until Potter opened for that matter). It appears that some of the issues revolved around a convoluted story and a disjointed theme.

Some elements of Beastly Kingdom are still evident in Animal Kingdom even today:

  • The Marquee of the park logo still includes a silhouette dragon among the animals walking behind the Animal Kingdom name.
  • One of the parking lots of the park was and still is titled Unicorn.
  • There is a statue of a Dragonhead above the ticket booths, though no Dragon exists in the park.
  • Fire blasts would fly from a cave near Camp Minnie-Mickey while guests passed on the Discovery River Cruise. This also included a suit of armor and an overhead announcement to all of the guests on-board the vessels of the short-lived attraction.

Beastly Kingdom was an enormous undertaking that the Disney Company decided was not cost-effective or feasible with the opening of the park, or even in the years following once it was mostly copied for Islands of Adventure. Though there were and still are elements of the Beastly Kingdom concept included in the park (proving the seriousness of the creation of the land), this land has been permanently shelved in favor of AVATAR and Expedition Everest, two attractions also centering on mythical creatures, whether they are from ancient lore or the silver screen.

What we are left with is this simple question: what could have been and will AVATAR surpass what this never-created land might have been?
