REVIEW: Crowds Swarm “Unleash The Villains” on Friday the 13th at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

By now, you’ve probably heard from several other sites how “Unleash the Villains” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios was a disaster. Well, in my opinion, Friday the 13th at Walt Disney World turned out to be a huge success. Let’s look at the evening piece by piece…

First of all, Disney clearly spent money. A lot of money. The stage was re-decorated as Hades’ Hangout and it looked great, maybe even better than it does when it gets redressed for Star Wars Weekends where it sees a lot more use.

Throughout the day at Studios guests could see a countdown clock winding down to 8PM and the Unleashing of the Villains

So, for those who deemed the night a complete failure, I have a theory. You probably left your residence around 6Pm and thought that would leave you enough time to enter the park before the event started. Well, there is your problem. Knowing that this event was announced several months ago and knowing how popular the Disney Villains are, it was clear the park was going to hit capacity sometime before 8PM. We arrived at Disney’s Hollywood studios around 3PM and there was already a small crowd gathering in front of the stage. We grabbed our spot dead center in a place where we could see both the stage and fireworks at 5:30PM. By 6PM, this was what was behind us…

Clearly, most of the crowd consisted of  locals, cast members, or people in the know about Walt Disney World. Everyone thought they could just leave from work or whatever else they were doing during the day and still get a great spot and enjoy this event. They were very wrong.

The meet and greet lines began forming at 2Pm and by 6PM they were a complete disaster. This isn’t Disney’s fault, but it is a testament to how great of an idea this event was.

A lot has been said about the parking situation at Studios on Friday. Honestly, what did anyone expect? If everyone left at the same time and 35,000 tried to jam into any theme park parking lot at once, the results would be the same. There isn’t a parking lot on the face of the earth equipped to deal with this situation, especially not a park as small as DHS. Epcot has the most wonderfully designed parking lot on earth, but it is still a nightmare when everyone tries to leave after fireworks on New Year’s Eve or the 4th of July.

In the end, the only people to blame for any shortcomings on Friday are those who left at the last minute and expected to waltz into the park. No offense, but whenever an event like this happens, it is best to arrive early. I understand this is not an option for everyone who wanted to attend, but I feel like a majority of people who showed up probably could have arrived earlier in the day. The park was empty when I arrived at 3PM. It was packed by 6PM. I have never seen a park fill-in like this in my life.

There were some crowd control issues that arose around 8PM, but again, they were not the fault of any Disney cast members. Some really horrible guests tried their best to stand in places they were not allowed to once all of the viewing areas around the stage had filled in. Cast members were pretty much forced to yell in their faces and threaten to call security before these individuals finally decided to move along and stop holding up the entire event.

Once things actually got started, the entertainment department really shined. Taking pieces that had worked well for Star Wars Weekends and Monsters University Homecoming, the Hades’ Hangout stage hosted 5 hours of stand-out performances. The festivities began with DJ Iggnite:

A little after 8PM, Hades and Meg from Hercules took over hosting duties and introduced the 13 villains for the evening:

At this point, the rotating meet and greets began where guests could meet Oogie Boogie or Jafar, Maleficent or Bowler Hat Guy, and the Evil Queen or Shan Yu. The remaining villains appeared in the crowd during the music and dancing portion of the evening.

Instead of taking the luck of the draw, many guests in the long lines around Echo Lake would stand aside and let people go ahead of them until the Villain they wanted to meet would arrive. I usually would be pretty angry about this, but all of the guests seemed to agree to this, so while it is usually unacceptable, under the circumstances I think it was alright. Oogie Boogie from The Nightmare Before Christmas made his debut at the event and I can understand the excitement of meeting a new character, especially one of that level of popularity.

Meanwhile, back at the stage, DJ Iggnite and Bernie Burkette & Brimstone (otherwise known as Mulch, Sweat, and Shears) took turns performing and interacting with Hades, Meg, Pain and Panic:

All of the festivities paused for the Villainy in the Sky fireworks show at 11PM:

The fireworks were the highlight of the night. I have seen many a fireworks show in my time, and Villainy in the Sky has to be in my top 5 all-time. Hopefully the brand-new 9 minute show will be tweaked musically and return at some point in the future.

After fireworks, dancing and live music continued on stage and the meet and greets continued by Echo Lake until the park closed at 1AM. Leaving the park anytime after 12:00AM really wasn’t an issue.

In conclusion, if you think this event was anything but a success, you are quite mis-informed. I met plenty of people who waited hours to meet Oogie Boogie and after they did, they were so happy that it didn’t matter that they waited that long. People who came just to see fireworks were treated to a spectacular brand new show and felt as if it was worth the trip. The added musical performances and entertainment through the night were great and really filled in the event schedule nicely.

If you ask guests who attended this event if they would do it again, I think almost anyone who didn’t sit in hours of car traffic to get in will tell you “yes”. If rumors are true, you may very well get to see “Unleash the Villains” once more, perhaps even as a hard-ticket party at Disney’s Hollywood Studios starting in 2014…

Meet Thor and See Treasures of Asgard in Innoventions at Disneyland

At Disneyland Park this summer, guests had the chance to virtually suit up at Tony Stark’s Hall of Armor, and recently we’ve learned that Captain America will appear at the Avengers Academy on the reimagined Disney Magic.

Well, here’s some more great news! Starting November 1st, we can experience more from the world of the Avengers, at Thor: Treasures of Asgard, in Innoventions at Disneyland Park!

ThorHammer

While doing research on the “Bifrost”, the bridge which allows Thor to travel amongs the Nine Realms, including Earth, Astrophysicist Jane Foster has found that the Bifrost will open again starting November 1st, precisely in Southern California at Innoventions at Disneyland Park. Because of this, a new exhibit is being installed, called Thor: Treasures of Asgard. Here you will be able to view a collection of objects brought to Earth from Asgard. Afterwards, you’ll have the opportunity to enter a chamber where you will be transported to Asgard via the Bifrost, where you can meet the mighty Avenger Thor!

PHOTOS & VIDEO: Princess Fairytale Hall Opens in New Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom

Princess Fairytale Hall finally opened to all guests in New Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom yesterday. The meet-and-greet is the second-to-last piece of the New Fantasyland expansion to open, leaving just the Seven Dwarfs’ Mine Train at this point. The meet and greet always hosts Cinderella and Rapunzel through two separate queues offering FastPass and FastPass+. Rapunzel and Cinderella will be joined daily by one visiting princess each, with the eventual plan being a pool consisting of Jasmine, Tiana, Snow White, Mulan, and Aurora for Disney to choose from. We take a look at Princess Fairytale Hall courtesy of WDWNT Reporter Joe Hogarty who provided pictures and video:

We also have a short video of Princess Fairytale Hall to share with you:

Overall, Princess Fairytale Hall is nothing groundbreaking. It is another highly immersive, well-themed meet-and-greet experience and a fitting place after several non-permanant attempts to have a Princess-only meet-and-greet area at the Magic Kingdom. The Princesses needed a home and the Magic Kingdom finally has one for them. While it did replace an opening day attraction, let us not forget that a brand new Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs attraction is opening in just a few months. It will be interesting to see how often Disney rotates the visiting princesses and how the wait times vary for Princess Fairytale Hall and we will be watching that over the coming weeks.

So, what do you think of Princess Fairytale Hall?

Disney Confirms Disney Springs Expansion Parking Changes

If you’ve ever driven to the Walt Disney World, you know that having a car on property can be a double-edged sword. You have the freedom to leave the Parks when you want/need to go, but you are also dealing with parking costs and issues. I can’t think of a more difficult parking lot to navigate on property than the ones at Downtown Disney.

With the exciting Disney Springs expansion coming over the next few years and construction already starting, many guests have questions about the new parking situation at Downtown Disney. The best part is that even MORE parking spots are coming and parking will continue to be complimentary.

Construction has started on the first of two multi-level parking garages. The first will be located near the AMC Theatres and Splitsville Luxury Lanes; this garage is expected to be completed in October 2014. The second garage will be located near the World of Disney store, and is set to open in 2016. There will continue to be surface parking spots in addition to the two parking garages.

Meanwhile, if you are planning on visiting Walt Disney World and Downtown Disney any time soon, there are some parking tips for your upcoming trip:

  • Let Disney do the driving. Even if you have driven to your chosen Resort, take the complimentary Disney buses to and from Downtown Disney.
  • If you are dining at Downtown Disney, or catching Cirque Du Soleil, be sure to arrive early to your reservation. Plan on arriving 60 minutes prior to your reservation.
  • If you DO drive, here are some tricks to parking your vehicle:
  1. There is additional parking across the street from Downtown Disney, which are open Fridays, Saturdays and holidays. These spaces are near the SunTrust and Casting buildings (see the map below). Be sure to use the signal lights and crosswalks when crossing to the Downtown Disney area.
  2. Guests can also use the Team Disney parking lot. There will be a complimentary shuttle with direct service to and from Downtown Disney’s West Side, or you can walk the short distance to your destination.
  3. To get between the West Side, Pleasure Island, and the Marketplace, you can use the Boat Transportation to get from one end of Downtown Disney to the other.
  4. If you are not sure of where to park, ask a Cast Member. They can direct you to the best available parking options.

Downtown Disney’s “Foodtopia” Set to Premiere October 1st

During the month of October, Downtown Disney will be hosting “Foodtopia,” an event that will showcase the myriad of dining choices for the Disney Foodies out there. From the roasted chicken at Bongo’s Cuban Cafe, to the shrimp and grits and the House of Blues, to the milk-braised pork shoulder with garlic smashed potatoes, foodies will be able to try them all.

SLV134786LARGE

From October 1st – 31st, the Foodtopia event  will feature seven Downtown Disney restaurants, each restaurant will be serving a three-course dinner for $30, with a $60 option at Fulton’s Crab House (tax and gratuity extra). The seven restaurants featured are Bongos Cuban Cafe, House of Blues, Paradiso 37, Planet Hollywood, Portobello, Splitsville Luxury Lanes, and Wolfgang Puck Cafe.

During October, Foodtopia will be held every day of the week between 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.  But don’t head over without advance planning! You must make a reservation and payment at least 48 hours in advance for this event. Beginning September 28th, you can call 1-407-WDW-DINE to make reservations. And don’t wait — space is limited for this event.

Although Foodtopia cannot be combined with other promotions, you can combine Foodtopia and Cirque Du Soleil tickets! If you make a Foodtopia reservation, you will receive a 20% discount on the Cirque Du Soleil “La Nouba” tickets for everyone in your party.

Three courses and a non-alcoholic beverage for $30 — What a bargain! But what is included in these fabulous dinners? As an example, at the Wolfgang Puck Café, you can start with garlic and white bean hummus, a Caesar salad or butternut squash soup. Entrees include pesto chicken, crispy pork loin or spaghetti bolognese. Desserts feature key lime pie, carrot cake or a brownie sundae. Paradiso 37 is offering blackened mahi sliders, a hearty beef burrito or chicken enchiladas paired with a starter and dessert. At Planet Hollywood, their Celebrity BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger is on tap for an entrée, or lasagna or their Southwest Salad. Splitsville lets you choose from eight appetizers and ten entrées, with a brownie and ice cream for dessert. And that $60 menu at Fulton’s Crab House? It includes either shrimp cocktail, steamed clams and mussels or jumbo lump crab cake to start; a whole Rhode Island lobster, cioppino or filet mignon for an entrée, and a Tollhouse Cookie sundae, key lime pie or root beer float for dessert. .

Will you be attending the Foodtopia event? At which restaurant will you dine? Which menu sounds the most appetizing?

RUMOR: Disney and Warner Brothers to Bring “The Lord of the Rings” to Disney Parks

Yes, that’s right. It sounds like Disney and Warner Brothers have either signed or are very close to signing an agreement that will bring “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” movie-inspired areas to the Disney Parks. This comes on the heels of rumors that it would be Universal that would acquire the theme parks rights several months ago.

LOTR

Disney began talking to executives at Warner Bros. about the idea late last year, and it seems now that Disney is looking to finalize or announce the deal in hopes of turning the tide in the Orlando theme park wars.

Rumor has it that Universal Orlando’s parks may show stronger attendance numbers in 2014 with the opening of a second Wizarding World of Harry Potter area, actually defeating Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom. This has Disney frightened.

With already announced AVATAR inspired attractions going to Animal Kingdom in the not-so-distant future, Disney is rumored to be overhauling a planned expansion of Hollywood Studios focusing to focus Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings. It would seem that any Cars Land additions planned for the park are now on hold or may never be built so that Disney could quickly move along with these other projects for the park, opening them between 2015 and 2018.

While we haven’t heard anything about what a Lord of the Rings-inspired area would include, it seems that an announcement from Disney might be imminent.

As with any rumor, you should take this with a grain of salt until it is actually announced. Things often change, especially when negotiations with other companies are involved, so who knows if this project will ever see the light of day. Until then, it sure is fun to think about…

What do you think? Would the Lord of the Rings be a good addition to Disney’s Hollywood Studios?
