BREAKING: First Permits Filed for Replacement of the Universe of Energy at Epcot

We first brought you the rumor that something was planned for the Universe of Energy pavilion almost a year ago. Although the plans seem to have been delayed, we now are seeing the first concrete indication that something is about to happen at the northeast corner of Epcot. Disney has filed paperwork with the South Florida Water Management District indicating plans to reroute a drainage canal behind Universe of Energy and create two new retention ponds to hold additional runoff from “onsite improvements that will add impervious area.”

 width=

It is clear from the filings that this canal drainage modification is just the beginning of a much larger construction project in the works. You can see from the above image that the construction area incorporates not only the canals and a large area of land, but also the Universe of Energy attraction itself.

 width=

The western half of the canal area highlighted in red is scheduled to be filled in. This would likely be where the additional “impervious area” is being added. And what exactly will this impervious area be? Likely an additional show building to be used for a future attraction coming to the Universe of Energy pavilion.

 width=

In the above image you can see an area labeled “Back of House” directly behind the Universe of Energy and Wonders of Life, where the canal will be filled. The fact that the project boundary outlined includes all of the Universe of Energy show building plus much of the walkways and entrance areas in front of the pavilion, while specifically excluding the Wonders of Life pavilion, likely means that a fairly significant construction project is planned – significantly more than simply an overlay. Expect a complete gutting of the existing building and a whole new entrance area where the existing mirrored fountain now stands.

 width=

The above hydrologic evaluation plans show a huge rectangular area behind Wonders of Life and directly on top of the filled canal area that could be the new show building.

PHOTOS: Special Wheelchair & Other Accommodations Allow Guests with Disabilities to Ride Flight of Passage in Pandora – The World of AVATAR

For the last few days, the internet has been abuzz with talk about how “unaccommodating” the attractions in Pandora: The World of AVATAR are for guests in wheelchairs. Well, after doing some research during our last visit to the planet, it appears that they are just as accommodating as other rides at Walt Disney World.

After reading more than enough pieces about these issues, I decided I wanted to see what was actually going on at the attraction, rather than speculation without first-hand experience. We spoke to cast members at the attractions to get all of the following information, so it should be as accurate as possible.

 width=

The link chair vehicles for the AVATAR Flight of Passage attraction in Pandora

The AVATAR Flight of Passage ride system is unique and simply could not accommodate a wheelchair, but wheelchair guests can transfer to ride. Transferring to ride a thrill ride at Walt Disney World is far from uncommon, as less-intense thrill rides such as Soarin’, the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, and Test Track all require such practices. Mind you, these are not decades-old attractions, but all rides that have opened since 1999, in a more modern age where theme parks often have guests requiring accommodation in mind.

At Flight of Passage, guests in a manual wheelchair can stay in their chair until they get to the ride vehicle, as the queue and pre-show experiences are fully accessible. The wheelchair can then pull right beside the Flight of Passage “link chair” seat and transferring will require 1-2 steps.

Those who need additional assistance transferring can also make use of a special wheelchair that is available. This wheelchair has the ability to elevate the guest in the seat via manual foot pump, similar to a barber’s chair. Cast members we spoke to at the attraction said they were able to load guests from this wheelchair effectively with little problem.

As with other attractions, guests needing to transfer are brought in before other guests are loaded so that they can take their time and have privacy as they move from their chair into the ride vehicle.

Guests in ECVs or motorized scooters will leave their ECVs before the pre-show areas and have the option of walking the rest of the way or using a manual wheelchair (or again, the special one pictured above, if need be). The distance from the door of the first pre-show room to the ride vehicle is about 50 steps, but also requires several minutes of standing.

Meanwhile, at the Na’vi River Journey ride, while there are no “wheelchair boats” that such a device could simply roll right onto, they do have a multi-tiered set of steps that allow guests to more easily descend into the boat. The rows on the boat are quite large as well, making it easier to assist a guest who must transfer into the vehicle. It’s not perfect, but it isn’t terribly complicated either. Transferring from a wheelchair is a necessity at many slow-moving Walt Disney World attractions, including The Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Spaceship Earth.

We hope this helps to clarify the process with factual information rather than vague, broad statements about the process at either attraction. As for concerns about guests with larger dimensions fitting on AVATAR Flight of Passage, we will address those in a separate story later this week.

PHOTOS: Former Catwalk Bar at Disney’s Hollywood Studios Returning for Club 33?

Many years ago, guests at the then Disney-MGM Studios could enjoy a drink high above a soundstage in the Catwalk Bar, an elevated establishment located above the Soundstage Restaurant. The bar was closed along with the Soundstage Restaurant in the late-1990’s to make way for the various Disney Junior shows that have occupied that space since. Well, the Catwalk Bar might be returning in some form…

With Club 33 announcing that they would open locations in each Disney World theme park, the Soundstage Restaurant seems like a good location. It’s elevated and relatively private, connected to the kitchen of a signature dining experience in the Brown Derby, and has that cool-factor of being in a beloved, forgotten location.

 width=

If this is the space, it is likely that Disney Junior would have to move elsewhere or close (or maybe become a dance party in a new location, similar to changes made at California Adventure).

 width=

The elevator and stairs to the Catwalk Bar, now suddenly boarded-up

This is purely speculation at this point, but the staircase and elevator inside of the Brown Derby which led to the Catwalk Bar are walled-off all of a sudden and some sort of work is clearly happening there.

Festival of Fantasy Parade Moving to 2pm Daily Starting in August, Is Paint the Night Parade to Blame?

Beginning August 20th, 2017, the Magic Kingdom will no longer present a 3:00 parade…

 width=

The Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade will be presented at 2:00pm daily starting August 20th. This appears to be a permanent change.

No reason for the change has been given, but the Paint the Night Electrical Parade coming to the Magic Kingdom could be the reason. The park would need more time between the entertainment offerings considering how popular Happily Ever After is and how popular the Paint the Night Parade  would be (should it be moving, still a rumor at this point).
