Disney World Testing Annual Pass & Other Discounts Through MagicBands

Some table service restaurants at Walt Disney World are testing the ability to scan a guest’s MagicBand to apply Annual Pass discounts.

 width=

If a guest is paying via MagicBand, they won’t  have to do anything extra to get the discount as it should automatically be applied during the payment process.

Sadly, this new feature requires MagicBand payment to work, so otherwise guests will have to show their pass for the discount.

Right now, the discount application is only working for annual pass. There is no word if Disney Vacation Club or other discounts will eventually  work the same way as well.

REVIEW: Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen at The Magic Kingdom Radically Alters Menu Once Again

Just yesterday, the Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen in Adventureland at the Magic Kingdom went through yet another major menu adjustment. This comes after two menu changes last year, with the last significant changes coming in December of 2016. You can check out all of our Skipper Canteen reviews below:

Here’s what the new menu for November 2017 looks like…

 width=

New in the appetizers is the Jungle Green Salad, replacing the Chicken Soup. Otherwise, the appetizer menu remains the same (thankfully).

 width=

Under entrees, the Head-On Shrimp, Noodle Bowl, and Skip’s Beefy Mac and Cheese all met their demise, replaced by the Perkins Thai Noodles and Sankuru Sadie’s Seafood Stew. Modifications were made to the “A Lot at Steak Salad”, Dr. Falls Signature Grilled Steak, and the Baa Baa Berber Lamb Chops. It is also worth noting that the Whole Fried Fish is now a Yellow Tail Snapper, since the Lion Fish was apparently not coming in on a consistent basis (personally, I think the Yellow Tail has more flavor anyway). The sustainable fish is a Red Tail Snapper, which is quite good as well.

 width=

Here we find the drink menu.

As far as themed-restaurants and wonderful spaces to dine in, Skipper Canteen is at the top of my list at Walt Disney World. It exudes tons of story, tying together Disney Park mythology from the Jungle Cruise, to the Adventurer’s Club, to Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar, to the Society of Explorers and Adventurers (S.E.A.), and more. The interior is jaw-dropping in many places and a pleasure to dine in, no matter how the menu may change.

The servers are also a HUGE part of the story and most we have had in our many journeys to the Jungle have been exceptional. Many cast members go above and beyond to make Skipper canteen the best restaurant at the Magic Kingdom.

A side note, the complimentary bread was removed from Skipper Canteen a few months ago sadly. While this is a definite loss for me, many guests found it strange and enjoyable. Regardless, most portions here are quite large, so you likely won’t go hungry without it.

So, let’s not waste another moment, let’s explore the new items that guests will find on their expeditions!

Jungle Green Salad ($9.00)

 width=

From the depths of the Jungle…Skipper Bill’s Hearty Mixed Greens, Seasonal Squash, Green Apples, Preserved Lemons, and Spiced Walnuts tossed with an Apple Cider Vinaigrette

The new appetizer salad is okay, with nothing really special about it, and is very small for $9. Spend just over twice the amount and get the steak salad as an entree, or get the Shiriki Noodle Salad which is also an appetizer.

Dr. Falls’ Signature Grilled Steak ($35.00)

 width=

Marinated New York Strip, Pico de Gallo Butter, Jasmine Rice, and Braised Black Beans with Applewood-smoked Bacon

The steak changed sides and the butter on top, giving it a more Latin flare. This is a welcome change as we found the pico de gallo butter on top already melted when the food arrived, but it added a nice fresh flavor to the charred steak. Sadly, the steak was fatty and a bit rubbery, so under no circumstance can I recommend this. Also, what are you doing ordering a steak in the Magic Kingdom? The beans and tomatoes are a big change from the past side dish, but they work well with the new butter.

Perkins Thai Noodles ($22.00)

 width=

Chicken, Tofu, Seasonal Vegetables, and Rice Noodles tossed in a Spicy Soy-Chili-Garlic Sauce. A favorite of our friend Pamelia Perkins, President of the Adventurers Club

While i lament the loss of the noodle bowl, this turned out fantastic. The noodles were a great portion for the price, very filling. The menu and server asked if we were okay with spice, and the spice was present but not overbearing, which was a nice change to the typical Magic Kingdom digs. That being said, he noted that they could make it spicier upon request. The dish has a lot chicken mixed in with the noodles made for a great unique dish, which feels almost like the new Kona Cafe noodle dishes (which is a good thing).

Sankuru Sadie’s Seafood Stew ($27.00)

 width=

Shrimp, Sustainable Fish, Mussels, and Octopus simmered in a fragrant Coconut Sauce. Served with Jasmine Rice

Again, the Head-On Shrimp was a favorite of mine, but this replacement is likely just as enjoyable. The coconut seafood stew came out as a heaping plate of random seafood. The octopus was cut in different tentacle sections and cooked to a tenderness that was just not found at Food & Wine Festival Greece booth.

 width=

The head-on shrimp live on in the dish, accompanied by bunch of muscles and chunks of sustainable fish above a generous portion of jasmine rice. The coconut broth created a porridge-like consistency towards the end, soaking in all the flavors of the mix of seafood. Overall a very solid dish that continues the adventurous theme of Skipper Canteen and plays well to the palate. I will be ordering this again.

“A Lot at Steak” Salad ($19.00)

 width=

We’re betting it all on this one! Grilled Steak, Romaine Lettuce, Spring Mix, Pickled Jalapeños, Red Onion, Queso Fresco, and Pumpkin Seeds tossed with Chimichurri Vinaigrette

The reimagined steak salad comes out in a seemingly endless bowl full of fresh greens, cheese, and a large portion of meat. Easily the biggest entree salad we’ve seen at Walt Disney world, outside of the Via Napoli group salad and buffets at least. It’s big, it’s fresh, and you can split this with an order of Sea Shu Mai to make for a quick refreshing lunch with a partner. It’s worth noting that the steak with this dish was much more tender, flavorful, and free of fat which may have been cut away in the preparation.

OVERALL

In review, I think these changes are fine and do little to hurt the restaurant. The steak is kind of a “safety dish”, so we don’t lament that being bad, and the other entree changes are at the very least a lateral move. While personally I will miss the noodle bowl and the head-on shrimp, and I know many who will miss the beefy mac and cheese, I believe the quality is being upheld at Skipper Canteen and it remains the finest table service restaurant at Magic Kingdom.

BREAKING: Blockbuster New Attraction Coming to Disneyland Paris in 2024

A “major new attraction”is coming to Disneyland Paris Resort in 2024, according to Forbes. While there are no details on what the new attraction will be or which of the two Paris parks will host it, it is part of a $2.4 billion investment in the parks following the Walt Disney Company taking full ownership of the resort earlier this year. Rumors have circulated recently that a Tron Lightcycle Power Run Coaster, similar to the one in Shanghai and the one coming to the Magic Kingdom by 2021, may be coming to Disneyland Paris. This would likely not be the blockbuster new attraction, as that should be something larger and original for Disneyland Paris.

 width=

According to recent filings, “capital expenditure included in the business plan represents a total of €2.1 billion ($2.4 billion in US dollars) over the period. This includes in particular the renovation of two hotels and attractions, as well as a major new attraction in 2024.”

Forbes reports that the information was disclosed in the cash tender offer document that was issued in connection with Disney’s takeover of the resort. The documents are connected to evaluating the company’s share value as part of its de-listing from the Euronext stock exchange. The filings indicate that Disney projects a 4% growth in annual revenue through 2026, with an 11.3% underlying profit margin through 2026 and rising to 15% four years later.

 height=

The documents also reference major hotel renovations to Hotel New York, which will close in October 2018 to become Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel, as well as to the Disneyland Hotel. Last month, Disney opened Villages Nature Paris, a new “nature” resort in collaboration with tourism and hotel operator Pierre & Vacances-Center Parcs.

 width=

In addition, “Marvel-themed attractions and entertainment” will be coming to the Walt Disney Studios park. Those attractions include a Marvel Stunt Show that will replace Cinemagique, which closed in March, as part of a special Marvel Summer of Superheroes from June 10th to September 30th that will feature new entertainment including character appearances by Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Spider-Man, Star-Lord and Black Widow.

Other rumors that have circulated regarding developments at the resort include a conversion of the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror to Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission Breakout in the Walt Disney Studios park. Tower of Terror is expected to close in September 2018 and reopen as Mission Breakout in March 2019. According to Forbes, Mission Breakout in Disney’s California Adventure has become the “highest rated thrill ride in the whole of [Disney’s] California resort.” An entire land based on MARVEL characters is expected to be part of the investment in the Resort.

Other recent changes to the resort include a 3D update to Star Tours, a new finale for Big Thunder Mountain, and the new Disney Stars on Parade daytime parade featuring a fire-breathing Malificent dragon like that in the Magic Kingdom’s Festival of Fantasy Parade.

Attendance has already started rising at the resort, up 5% for the six months ending March 31 from the same period a year before, revenue increasing $21.7 million, and occupancy up 3% to 81%.

MARVEL Black Panther Meet and Greet Coming to Disney California Adventure

Early next year, “Black Panther” will open in theaters February 16, 2018, and for a limited time, Disney California Adventure park guests will have the opportunity to encounter the king of Wakanda himself, Black Panther.

 width=

“Black Panther” follows T’Challa who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king. But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king — and Black Panther — is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life.

No date has been given for Black Panther’s arrival at Disney California Adventure park – so stay tuned. “Black Panther” arrives in theaters February 16, 2018.

PHOTOS: Remodeled Speedway Gas Station Opens Near Disney’s Boardwalk Resort, Hollywood Studios

After being closed for a few weeks, the Speedway gas station near Disney’s Boardwalk Resort and Disney’s Hollywood Studios reopened recently.

 width=

The station had never closed after being purchased by Speedway. It was formerly a Hess station.

 width=

Brand new pumps were installed with Speedway Secure systems in place. “Touch to pay” with credit cards and Apple Pay is coming soon.

 width=

Much of the signage was redone.

 width=

The Coke Freestyle machine is gone, so now there are these fountains featuring “flavor magic”. There’s also a slushy machine now.

 width=

 width=

There’s also this psychotic looking milkshake contraption…

Yes, this is a photo of Hostess snacks on WDWNT.com.

They also serve Dunkin’ Donuts Coffee products.

BREAKING: List of Interactive Exhibits and More Details Revealed for the NBA Experience at Disney Springs

While we have seen a few pieces of concept art and know that the NBA Experience at Disney Springs is coming Summer 2019, we know very little about what will be inside the West Side establishment when it opens. Well, at least we didn’t until now…

 width=

For the ticketed experience inside, exhibits will be distributed over 2 very tall floors, so many of the activities will be quite large and surround a “Center Court” atrium area. The “Center Court” area in the middle is reminiscent of the circular Ventureport entry area that was in DisneyQuest, so it is somewhat surprising that they bulldozed the building rather than reuse it. Perhaps at one point they wanted to reuse the DisneyQuest building, but it just didn’t completely work out for their needs?

On the first floor, guests enter through the ticketing area, go through a entry tunnel, and walk out on to Center Court. Exhibits downstairs will include the Locker Room, Hall of Champions, Hoop Sciences, and a pair of large VR Theaters. The retail shop and dining venue are also on the ground floor, but do not require tickets. As you can see in the art above, the retail shop is to the left and the dining venue the right, with the entrance to the exhibits through the center.

The second floor will feature Pop-A-Shot, Dream Dunk, Big Shot, You Make the Call, the Dream Court. One of these experiences is rumored to utilize the simulators from Cyberspace Mountain, as they were maintained and removed from DisneyQuest with labels marking them as the property of the NBA Experience.

 width=

While we still don’t know for sure what all of these exhibits are (although some seem easy to figure out based on their names), we at least now have a list of things there will be to do inside this NBA-themed interactive playground come 2019.

Parks and Resorts Chairman Bob Chapek is Main Contender to Replace Bob Iger

With Bob Iger set to retire from the Walt Disney Company throne in 19 months, experts are saying that odds are high that Disney Parks Chief Executive Bob Chapek will be the man to replace him.

 width=

Whilst, from a business point of view, this seems like a sound move – with Shanghai turning a high profit in it’s first year – to fans, it seems like a controversial fit for the position.

He has been at the helm of many successful projects in the parks, with ideas such as tiered pricing, MaxPass and the introduction of more hard-ticket events in the parks since his introduction in February 2015.

Christmas Experiences Coming to Downtown Disney at Disneyland

The Downtown Disney District at Disneyland Resort is getting ready to celebrate the holiday season with new entertainment, shopping, and dining options for guests.

In the center of the promenade stands a dazzling christmas tree, while all throughout the shopping and dining district guests can enjoy brightly lit planters that feature some oversized ornaments.

 width=

A new caroling act, Holiday Harmony, will be performing nightly during the holiday season. The group will be dressed in tacky sweaters and sing classic holiday favorites.

 width=

Catal Restaurant will be offering a special “Breakfast with Santa” on December 16, 21, and 22 where guests can join Santa Claus and his elves for caroling and a family-style breakfast. Haagen-Daaz will be offering a limited time holiday sundae: peppermint bark ice cream layered with hot fudge and Oreos, topped with whipped cream and candies. This sundae will also be available as a milkshake.

Guests shopping at PANDORA Jewelry will receive a complimentary Disney clutch with the purchase of a Mickey & Minnie “Love Icons” charm. Additionally, Build-A-Bear Workshop will now be selling reindeer stuffed animals for guests to make and customize with clothing options.

Have fun shopping and dining!

PHOTO: Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar Releasing “Jingle Cruise” Elephant Mug This Week

Beginning on 11/30 at 7 AM, you can get your very own 1st Edition Holiday Elephant Tiki Mug from Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar at the Disneyland Hotel. The Jingle Cruise may be gone in California, but its spirit lives on…

 width=

Although it seems 7 AM is a bit early for alcoholic beverages (who are we to judge), the line is sure to be long for such a prized possession.
