REVIEW: Frontera Cocina Opens in Disney Springs; So Much More Than Amazing Pecan Pie

Frontera Cocina opened just yesterday, becoming the latest in a long line of new restaurants to debut in the area over the last year or so. In case you haven’t heard of it, here’s the official release on Frontera Cocina:

Renowned chef Rick Bayless is introducing Florida and the Southeast to his famous gourmet Mexican dishes with the debut of Frontera Cocina now open at Disney Springs at Walt Disney World Resort.

Frontera Cocina will delight friends, family and food lovers with exciting flavors and a contemporary Mexican experience. Warm colors, an open kitchen and a lively atmosphere frame an inviting exploration of the many delights developed by Chef Bayless, a six-time James Beard Foundation winner. Menu items include Oaxacan Red Chile Chicken, Salsa Verde Shrimp Enchiladas Suizas and freshly made salsas and guacamole. In addition, a quick-service taco counter will be added to offer guests a quick taste of Chef Bayless’ award-winning cuisine.

“For me, it is always a thrill to share the lively fresh regional flavors of Mexico with a broader audience,” Chef Bayless said.  “And what better place to do that than Walt Disney World Resort? We plan to add all the deliciousness we can to the experience for all who come to enjoy Frontera Cocina at Disney Springs.”

Executive Chef Stephen Hicks will oversee Frontera Cocina’s kitchen. Hicks has forged his career based on the basic fundamentals of simplicity, sourcing local ingredients and pursuing world-class customer service. Using these guiding principles, Hicks has served as cook and lead in the kitchens of the River Club in Jacksonville, Florida; Sapphire Grill in Savannah, Georgia; and Seasons 52 in Orlando, Florida. Hicks also spent time as a multi-unit chef in Chicago with McCormick & Schmick’s.

And just in case you don’t know who Rick Bayless is…

Chef Rick Bayless is probably best known for winning the title of Bravo TV’s “Top Chef Masters,” with his authentic Mexican cuisine. His highly rated, national Public Television Series, “Mexico–One Plate at a Time,” is in its 10th season. In 2012, Chef Bayless was nominated for a Daytime Emmy for Best Culinary Host.

Chef Bayless has launched several award-winning Chicago restaurants. He founded the casual Frontera Grill in 1987 and received the James Beard Foundation’s highest award, Outstanding Restaurant, in 2007. The 4-star Topolobampo served its first meals in 1989. And the wildly popular, LEED GOLD-certified, fast-casual Xoco launched in 2009, serving wood-oven tortas, steaming caldos, golden churros and bean-to-cup Mexican hot chocolate. Chef Bayless’ quick-service Tortas Frontera restaurants have changed the face of food service at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, while Frontera Fresco restaurants have brought Frontera flavors to several Chicago locations. His award-winning Frontera line of salsas, cooking sauces and non-GMO tortilla chips can be found coast to coast.

Chef Bayless is the author of nine cookbooks, including “Mexico–One Plate at a Time,” which won the James Beard Foundation Best International Cookbook of the Year award in 2001. His “Fiesta at Rick’s” is a New York Times bestseller. He has won six James Beard Foundation awards, including two for his cookbooks, Midwest Chef of the Year, National Chef of the Year, Humanitarian of the Year and Who’s Who of Food and Beverage in America.

IMG_8855

Frontera Cocina occupies a fairly unassuming building along the water in Disney Springs, but once inside or by the patio area, you realize that the restaurant may have the best location in all of Town Center.

IMG_8860

IMG_8861

Guests can see into the kitchen just across from Sprinkles.

IMG_8993

IMG_8882

The interior isn’t very large, but it has a pleasant atmosphere.

IMG_8881

IMG_8984

IMG_8982

IMG_8969

The bar area is of a nice size.

IMG_8971

The patio views at night are stunning, better than any others along Town Center, which will be plenty enjoyable when the Summer weather fades away in the Fall.

IMG_8883

Let’s take a look at the menu…

IMG_8884

I’m thoroughly impressed that there isn’t a separate allergy menu, the regular menu has the potential ingredients of concern listed right under each item. This is a nice touch.

IMG_8885

IMG_8886

The back of the menu features a drink menu, but there is also a much larger drink menu at the nearby bar.

IMG_8955

IMG_8956

IMG_8957

IMG_8958

The bar offers a smaller version of the menu, but it seemed like you could order the full menu there anyway.

IMG_8892

Playing with Fire – Avion blanco tequila, cucumber, jalepeno, fresh lime juice, agave nectar, and a hibiscus salt rim.

IMG_8897

Blood Orange Jalapeno Margarita – Casa Noble blanco tequila, orange liqueur, blood orange juice, habanero bitters jalepeno, and a tajin chile rim.

IMG_8899

The “People Watching” was unique in that it had a salt rim which contains black ants, which despite being kind of odd to Americans, really compliments the drink flavor perfectly.

IMG_8906

The Frontera Old Fashioned – Zacapa 23 Solera rum, agave syrup, orange tiki bitters, lemon, and an orange peel.

IMG_8911

The Mexican Cola may not be the best drink to order with dinner, but if I was just hitting the bar I would definitely get this one again.

IMG_8913

The Frontera Margarita – Casa noble blanco tequila, Royal Combier, fresh lime juice, agave nectar, and a salt rim.

IMG_8919

The black ant rim on two of the drinks was unique and surprising for a Disney setting, but it blended nicely with both drinks.

Overall, the drinks were great. I especially enjoyed the Playing with Fire, but I also like Jalapeno Margaritas typically. There wasn’t one of the drinks I would not with have again or recommend to someone dining here.

IMG_8890

On to appetizers, my least favorite was the Chipotle Chicken Tostada. They weren’t bad, just just seems kind of standard. I enjoyed the seasoning on the chicken and the avaiocado added a nice flavor, but overall it just was kind of forgettable against the other choices.

IMG_8894

The Cotel Verde was excellent. The shrimp and scallops blended perfectly with the sauce, which had just a hint of lime.

IMG_8898

I usually am not a fan of guacamole, but the two we tried here were pretty phenomenal. The Bacon version tasted like bacon as you would expect, so I’m not sure how anyone would not like it.

IMG_8900

If you have read any of my dining reviews, you know very well that I have a love for spicy dishes, so needless to say that the Atomic Guacamole was my favorite. The habanero salsa packed a good punch, but also a really nice flavor.

IMG_8905

The Queso Fundido was also spectacular and was a very good size portion with the included tortillas. Melted cheese is hard to mess up, but this was pretty close to perfection.

IMG_8908

The Tortilla Soup was better than expected and is poured table-side (which is now a trend if you remember our Tiffins review).

IMG_8916

Not something I would order again just because the taste reminded me a little too much of Chef Boyardee’s red sauce, but it wasn’t bad.

IMG_8922

Now, on to the entrees. I ordered the Carne Asada, which was a very healthy portion for $32.00. This was my least favorite entree, but that being said, it was something I would order again if I was in the mood for it. The carne asada was cooked well, but what made the dish was the tomatillo salsa and the caramelized plantains.

IMG_8932

It is hard to find a weak spot in the entrees since they are all so good, and I probably only ranked the other entrees over this one as it was what I expected it to be.

IMG_8924

The Shrimp Mojo de Ajo was also enjoyable, mostly thanks to the sauce which is a mix of garlic, chicken broth, olive oil, lime, and chipotle. Overall, a good lighter option

IMG_8925

IMG_8933

The Shrimp Enchiladas Suizas was a particular highlight among the entrees. The creamy roasted tomatillo sauce was unique, not something I have experienced in many dishes but it worked perfectly with the fresh shrimp, complemented by the starchiness of corn tortillas.

IMG_8937

You may not think of sandwiches when you think of Mexican style cuisine, but the Pepito Torta was delicious, especially when dipped in the accompanying chipotle salsa.

IMG_8948

IMG_8941

The carnitas (pork shoulder) was tender and flavorful, probably my favorite of all of the entrees.

IMG_8945

I enjoyed the Oaxacan Red Chile Chicken as well, which is covered in a nice red mole sauce and filled with chicken, rice, and corn tortilla.

IMG_8947

Now the sides… This may sound ridiculous, but the Queso Anejo Mashed Potatoes were out of this world. Mashed potatoes would typically be just about the last side I would order at this kind of a restaurant, but the cheese gave them a sweet taste that was really special. These are probably just about the best mashed potatoes I’ve ever had.

IMG_8940

The Arroz Con Plantains was pretty standard, rice with plantains mixed in which will do the trick if you are in the mood for rice.

IMG_8942

If you need a bigger helping of the Fried Plantains (which may not be a bad idea), they also offer them as a side. As I mentioned earlier, I am a pretty big fan of these.

IMG_8963

The dessert menu wasn’t ready yet when we dined, but our server was happy to describe them all to us. He informed us that Bayless was famous for his pecan pie, so I decided that’s what I had to have. This was seriously one of my favorite desserts I’ve ever had in my entire life. The pie was more akin to a pecan brownie, but it was about as perfect as it could be. Even the ice cream had a good pecan flavor from the dusting over it. I would seriously have just came back to Frontera Concina for this, but luckily I enjoyed the rest of the menu as well.

IMG_8966

The plantain sundae has to be one of the most unique desserts in all of Walt Disney World. I was kind of “weirded out” by the idea of ice cream with plantains, but it turned out to be a really good mix of flavors.

IMG_8960

The Coconut Lime Quattro Leches was wonderful as well, a nice lighter option (but I would just get the pecan pie and exercise more later).

IMG_8975

The staff was nice enough to bring us Crema de Tequila to follow our meal, which was smooth with a light caramel flavor. I’m currently looking for a recipe to make this at home…

IMG_8986

If you enjoyed your meal so much that you want to take it home, they do sell 3 of the salsas at a counter in the front, as well as a Bloody Mary mix and some Rick Bayless books.

IMG_8988

IMG_8990

IMG_8856

Outside, there is a small counter service window attached that sells “to-go” versions of the food and drinks you will find inside Frontera Cocina.

IMG_8857

Overall, Frontera Cocina is yet another viable table service option at Disney Springs. I went in with zero expectations and totally wowed by most of the food and drinks we had during our dinner. There are several dishes here I am dying to try (or even try again) based on our experience, which might lead me to even chose Frontera Cocina over some of my usual lunch at dinner spots at the Springs. A late evening stop here for drinks and more of the amazing pecan pie wouldn’t be out of the question either. Frontera also offers a style that isn’t like anything else at the Springs, even though Paradiso 37 does take a stab at some similar dishes. I wouldn’t even have to think if I was asked to chose between the two, Frontera Cocina would win hands down. Also, I found the prices to be fairly resonable compared to most other options at Disney Springs, although that can change over time.

I will be going back to Frontera Cocina, probably on a regular basis, and if you typically enjoy this kind of cuisine, I get the feeling you will be too.

REVIEW: Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar Revamps Menu, Favorites Change, New Items Added

Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar at Disney Springs has been a hot spot amongst Disney fans to say the least, offering what many considered a very strong drink and food menu. I personally will drop by at least 2-3 times a month for a quick drink or bite, feeling this is really one of the best bar/restaurants on property. This week, a fair amount of the food menu was altered due to guest demand, so we decided to go and try it out.

IMG_9127

Gone are the Good Dates, Snack of Ra, and the original Tanis Tacos, replaced with Temple Tenderloin, Sallah’s Falafel, and the Tanis Tuna Tacos.

IMG_9128

IMG_9131

The temporary menu in the front of the book sin’t all that has changed… the entire book is gone…

IMG_9132

Some drinks have descriptions on the front page.

IMG_9134

Most just have a name and a price.

IMG_9140

The Sallah’s Falafel was really great, especially with the spicy sauce on the side. There is naan bread under all of that, with guests expected to rip all of this up and eat it as a finger food. Luckily it tasted great because trying to eat this in this format was kind of a challenge. It should probably be served pre-cut or something of the sort.

IMG_9141

The Rolling Boulder Sliders were revamped for the most part, losing the spicy yogurt sauce in favor of brisket meatballs with a tomato-bacon jam. I would order the old sliders about 1-2 times a month, so I was pretty worried about this change, but these were good. They are radically different but in a good way. Gone is the spiciness, replaced with a more flavorful sauce that will likely be enjoyed by more guests overall.

IMG_9143

I was pretty excited about the Temple Tenderloin, but the flavor was very bland. The bread was fresh, but the rest of it just lacked any flavor to me. The fries underneath however, were spectacular. The fries are tossed in a bacon and chimichurri sauce, unique to say the least.

IMG_9147

IMG_9145

The Tanis Tuna Tacos also lacked flavor, even after squeezing a generous amount of lime on them. The toppings and the tacos themselves tasted very fresh, but the main ingredient tasted non-existent honestly.

Overall, the changes don’t make me went to stop visiting Jock Lindsey’s but they aren’t overly positive either. I prefer the original sliders, but the new ones are a solid adjustment. Otherwise, there wasn’t much outside of french fries and the falafel that I thought was particularity good. Hopefully they will continue to work on the menu until it evenly rounded out, but until then it’s still worth flying by for drinks and a bite.

PHOTOS: Coca-Cola Store & Rooftop Tasting Bar Open at Disney Springs

Earlier today, the Coca-Cola Store opened on the West Side of Disney Springs, located at the border between the area and Town Center, just steps from the Orange parking garage.

IMG_9165

Coca‑Cola Store Orlando is modeled after a 1920s Coca‑Cola bottling plant. Celebrating the history of Coca-Cola, the inviting brick exterior gives a nod to the brand’s heritage while the glass-accented entry pays tribute to the iconic Coca‑Cola green glass bottle.

IMG_9166

Stickers were being given out upon entry.

IMG_9167

IMG_9168

Inside, guests are welcomed by a 30-foot-wide blown-glass chandelier crafted from repurposed Coca‑Cola bottles. The store – one of only three retail locations operated by The Coca‑Cola Company in the United States – features a broad assortment of Coca-Cola branded merchandise. A line of sustainable fashion apparel and other handmade items crafted from recycled materials showcase the 5by20 collection – an array of items created by women artisans from around the world.

IMG_9169

There are two fairly large floors of shopping for guests to enjoy.

IMG_9173

Plenty of Orlando-exclusive merchandise is available, including a special wrapped bottle.

IMG_9170

The hot item today was a special grand opening silver bottle that was limited to only 500 pieces.

IMG_9171

IMG_9178

The ramp that goes around the outside of the store offers pleasant views of the surrounding West Side area. Elevators are also available.

IMG_9175

IMG_9180

IMG_9194

Guests can visit the rooftop beverage bar and taste an ice-cold Coca‑Cola while taking in the sights of Disney Springs. For the ultimate Coke experience, guests can choose from a variety of Coca‑Cola brands from around the world such as the infamous Beverly from Italy and Thums Up from India, frozen beverages and over 100 drink choices via Coca‑Cola Freestyle. A selection of specialty adult beverages will be available in the evenings beginning July 8th.

IMG_9191

IMG_9192

IMG_9187

The most interesting part of the menu to me was the Taste of the World. An International tray of 16 drinks is available for $8.00, a float tray for $8.50, and you can get both for a discount at just $14.00.

IMG_9200

This is a lot for $14.00 in my opinion, and something fairly unique and family friendly. There is a lot of alcohol at Disney Springs, and I enjoy a drink as much as the next person, but it’s nice to see something special that can also cater to those who maybe can’t have or do not enjoy such drinks.

IMG_9203

The floats were all fantastic, made with Haagen Daaz ice cream.

IMG_9221

They come in Pibb Xtra, Barq’s Rootbeer, Barq’s Red creme, Fanta Orange, Coca-Cola, Sprite, Fantas Grape, and Cherry Coke flavors. There really wasn’t even one of these I didn’t enjoy.

IMG_9220

IMG_9211

The sodas are akin to a paid trip to Club Cool at Epcot, however, you get a much greater variety here, 16 in total.

IMG_9202

The soda flight comes with a booklet to help you identify the flavors, a nice touch.

IMG_9215

IMG_9218

Just like at Club Cool, you are bound to like some and hate others, and probably argue with the rest of your party about what’s good and what isn’t. It’s the fun of such an experience and I think overall it’s worth $8.00 alone, most certainly worth $14.00 for the full sampler with floats. It’s also a pretty pleasant place to enjoy such an experience as the rooftop bar offers fantastic views of Disney Springs.

IMG_9195

They even have cans of Surge…

REVIEW: The Daily Poutine at Disney Springs; Disappointment Comes in 4 Flavors

The Daily Poutine opened on the border of the Marketplace and Town Center of Disney Springs back on May 15th, 2016. The stand serves traditional poutine (which are large french fries with cheese and gravy), as well as some interesting new takes on the Canadian favorite. You may be asking yourself now, “Tom, you seem to like to be the first to talk about new items at Walt Disney World, why is this review a month late?” Well, honestly, I forgot, and that’s the problem. What sounded like an exciting quick stop for loaded french fries ended up being a bit of a disappointment. We were so excited about so many other options that have opened at Disney Springs that this one kind of just got lost in the shuffle, which is pretty much what I feel the fate of this booth will be in the grand scheme of Disney Springs.

IMG_5426

It is located just steps away from World of Disney and Amorette’s Patisserie.

IMG_5455

IMG_5456

There are 4 varieties of the fries offered here, as well as a nice drink selection.

IMG_5457

In WDWNT fashion, we ordered them all.

IMG_5459

We also ordered the Fireball Sangria, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I never really though to throw whiskey in sangria, but it makes for a good (and surprisingly refreshing) combination. This is a solid drink option for a hot summer day at Disney Springs.

IMG_5460

The fries themselves are thick steak fries. They are good on their own, but as this is a “poutine” stand, the focus is on the toppings. The Italian style was my least favorite. The marinara sauce reminded me of the more awful faux-Italian counter service offerings from Disney. The cheese was barely melted as well, which didn’t help the cause.

IMG_5461

The Latin were my overall favorite. The pork was seasoned really well and the yucca, cheese, and black beans all mixed for a really good flavor, even though I’m not sure french fires are the best item to throw these toppings on.

IMG_5463

I thoroughly enjoyed the French version, as the Gruyere cheese melted onto the fries was pretty perfect. I also enjoy mushrooms, so the added taste of those in this dish was a pleasant addition to some bites.

IMG_5466

While I enjoyed the cheese curds, I am not a big fan of brown gravy which hampered my enjoyment of the Classic option.

The Daily Poutine is good, it’s just not great, and that’s a problem when it is surrounded by some really great counter service or food stand options. While the portions are large and filling, I would much rather dine at B.B. Wolf’s Sausage Co., D-Luxe Burger, or even Earl of Sandwich if I was at Disney Springs looking for something fast. If time and money were no option, my choices would broaden ten-fold, leaving the Daily Poutine completely off of my radar, and that’s the issue. The Daily Poutine just isn’t good enough or priced well enough to survive in the “theme park for food” landscape that is the Disney Springs of 2016. My recommendation would be to skip this and visit any of the other establishments we have positively reviewed from Disney Springs over the last year.

REVIEW: B.B. Wolf’s Sausage Co. at Disney Springs Offers Great Eats, But Zero Seats

IMG_4989

B.B. Wolf’s Ssausage Co. recently opened along the Village Causeway at Disney Springs, offering a variety of sausage based dishes as you might guess. The establishment is name after the Big Bad Wolf of Disney fame, who spent his cartoon life chasing the Three Little Pigs around various animated shorts produced by Walt Disney.

IMG_4986

5 items make up the main menu, as well as a few draft beer and beverage options.

IMG_5806

Here’s a look at the allergy menu, which is nice to see given AristoCrepes doesn’t have one.

IMG_5808

I started with the three little pigs which includes a Reuben, bacon wrapped & black ban salsa, and chili-cheese mini-sausage sandwich. These were phenomenal. The bread, the sausage, the toppings, everything was perfect. In the ever-increasing line-up of awesome dining options at Disney Springs, this needs to somehow find a place on your agenda, even if it is just from a food stand.

IMG_5809

IMG_5811

IMG_5817

My favorite was the bacon wrapped & black bean salsa one, but they were all really fantastic.

IMG_5818

IMG_5812

Leading into our visit to B.B. Wolf’s Sausage Co., we were led to believe the Bavarian Sausage Sandwich would be the real winner, but I thought this was awful. The pretzel bun was tasteless and there was way too much cabbage. The sausage was OK by itself, but otherwise I would not order this again.

IMG_5821

Way too much cabbage…

IMG_5815

The last item we ordered was the Italian Veggie Sausage sandwich. This might be the very best vegetarian option I’ve ever had from a food stand. The bread was fresh and complimented all of the flavors inside well. If you didn’t tell me, I would have never guessed this was even vegetarian based on the taste.

IMG_5823

IMG_5824

Two of the three items we enjoyed at B.B. Wolf’s Sausage Co. are things I would order again, but the main problem here is seating. These aren’t items you can walk around and eat. They are too large and have to many toppings to be comfortably eaten walking through shops and such. While there are about 3 standing tables here, I’d like to see a few seats placed in the alcove off to the right of the restaurant, where there is plenty of room. Otherwise, B.B. Wolf’s Sausage Co. is a sturdy addition to Disney Springs former “stick and straw” lineup of food offerings during the Downtown Disney days.

REVIEW: Not Your Average Crepes, The AristoCrepes Opens at Disney Springs

Somewhat themed to the Disney animated film The Aristocats, the Aristocrepes is a food stand located on the Village Causeway at Disney Springs, just steps away from the Rainforest Cafe and Goofy’s Candy Company.

IMG_5865

The menu here offers an assortment of savory and sweet crepes, which I can best equate to food wrapped in a pancake of sorts.

IMG_5866

I just couldn’t stomach a “savory” crepe on Friday, so we went with three of the sweet crepes instead.

IMG_5869

I started with the S’mores since that seemed to be the one most of our readers were excited about. It’s good, it’s really good, but also kind of a disaster to eat. The handling box is nice, but I really think a knife and fork are the best option here, so just add some plates and maybe I would have enjoyed this more. Again, a themed box is a wonderful thing, and I don’t want to knock it because it’s a beautiful thing, but these are just too messy.

IMG_5871

It’s essentially S’mores in a pancake, which is as good as it sounds… filled with big chunks of marshmallow, chocolate, and graham crackers.

IMG_5873

The Key Lime Cheesecake was good as well, if you like key lime cheesecake. I don’t like key lime cheesecake so I did not like this one, but the other two in my party loved it.

IMG_5875

IMG_5878

IMG_5879

Last, but not least was the Strawberry Romanoff, which I was surprised to find out was not based on the Avengers… but all joking aside, this was everyone’s favorite. The strawberry flavor seems more natural inside of a crepe than all of the S’mores ingredients do.

IMG_5880

The whipped cream and sour cream mixing with the strawberry inside here was just perfect. I would get this again if I was made to stop at AristoCrepes (if not holding out for a milkshake from D-Luxe Burger or something from Sprinkles).

IMG_5881

AristoCrepes continues the new Disney Springs tradition of making me sound like a broken record. At this point I’m actually hoping something will be bad just so I don’t look like I’ve gone over to the “dark side” and am just trying to make Disney more money. Regardless, there isn’t much I can say bad about anything I’ve tried here so far, it was all really good. That being said, Disney doesn’t seem to know what is actually in any of this stuff. Apparently everything in these crepes is made at an outside facility, so they couldn’t even provide us with an allergy menu upon our last visit. I’m not sure it is always good for a food service venue to not know what is in what it is serving, but I’m sure this will be rectified after a few complaints from those with food allergies.

AristoCrepes is another solid dessert option at Disney Springs, but would be a 3rd or 4th choice for me given some of the amazing options already here.

REVIEW: STK Orlando Opens in Disney Springs, Is Pleasure Island Now a Steakhouse?

STK Orlando opened its doors for dinner last night, taking the space once occupied by the Comedy Warehouse of Pleasure Island. The restaurant is situated just over the bridge between The Landing and The West Side, just across from what will be the home of the Edison next Spring. STK is a small chain of high-end steakhouses with a “lounge vibe”, with other locations in nightlife hot-spots such as Las Vegas, Miami, and New York. How does this fit in at Disney Springs?

IMG_6311

IMG_6312

The interior looks like something out of the New York nightlife scene.

IMG_6317

When STK claims to be a steakhouse with a lounge vibe, they are giving a pretty accurate description. The entire venue looks and feels like a lounge, but operates like a steakhouse. While the venue doesn’t really fit the Walt Disney World mold, the level of service and food quality made me just as comfortable as I would be dining at the Brown Derby or Jiko. The rooftop patio is wonderful and you could be seated upstairs as well, but we were seated on the lower floor.

Here’s a video of the views from the patio:

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEvRH-pa2WY]

IMG_6318

I don’t know why, but I was expecting menu prices here to be above anything else at Disney Springs, but they are pretty much right on par with the nearby Boathouse and Morimoto Asia.

IMG_6320

However, it is a little disconcerting when a quality steakhouse offers sauces. Typically, an establishment of this caliber will not offer sauce as a true quality steak doesn’t need one and the sauce doesn’t allow you to taste the real flavor of the steak.

IMG_6321

A look at the cocktail menu, but there is also a full wine list available upon request.

   IMG_6322

     IMG_6327

I started my evening with the “Secret Affair”, which was good but not great. It wasn’t particularly strong or flavorful, just kind of forgettable honestly.

    IMG_6331

A number fo the people at our table ordered the Summertime Fling and everyone who had one enjoyed it immensely. I thought it was better than what I had ordered, but you can certainly find better $15 cocktails around Walt Disney World.

    IMG_6335

The “Not Your Daddy’s Manhattan” however, was just about perfect. I’m not really a Manhattan drinker, but I would most definitely order this on my next visit over the other drinks at our table.

  IMG_6337

  IMG_6344

This is the “Smokeshow”, which again is just somewhat forgettable. None of the drinks here really stood out. None of them were bad, but nothing really made me go “wow”.

IMG_6345

The bread service had a very distinct look to it, obviously with the bread coming in a skillet, but also coming with a strange green sauce which I spent a fair amount of the evening calling “Ecto Cooler” (look it up kids, it’s coming back next week).

  IMG_6347

The bread itself was great, very soft and with a great flavor to it.

    IMG_6351

I did begrudgingly put some sauce on it and the flavor was surprisingly normal. It had a nice blue cheese flavor.

IMG_6352

While the drinks were nothing special, food is where STK excels (as it should). The rock shrimp were very good, packing really good flavor into small package.

  IMG_6354

The Lil BRGs were my favorite. The wagyu beef was cooked just right, the bread was soft and flaky, and the toppings mixed in perfectly.

IMG_6355      IMG_6361

The grilled octopus was good as well, certainly better than the octopus dish I had tired at Morimoto Asia Street Food just days earlier.

   IMG_6365

The shrimp cocktail was also enjoyable as the shrimp were of a good quality and the cocktail sauce has an unexpected spicy/zesty kick to it.

IMG_6368

The burrata was a solid salad option, all of the ingredients tasted very fresh.

         IMG_6377

The Hearts of Romaine was fantastic. While I expected more of a Caesar salad flavor, it actually tasted similar to a Cobb Salad, much like the one served at the Brown Derby at Hollywood Studios.

     IMG_6382

The seared scallops appetizer isn’t very large, but it is very good. If you enjoy scallops, you can’t go wrong ordering this one.

  IMG_6384

Moving on to the entrees, the Florida Grouper was better than I expected, but the portions were not huge.

  IMG_6387  IMG_6389

But of course, the name of the restaurant is essentially steak, so the focus turns to these guys.  The first one up is the Bone-In Rib Steak. With the exception of the next steak up, the rest of them were exceptional. They were not the best cuts of these types of steaks I have ever had in my life, but they are pretty high up there. You would be hard-pressed to make a wrong decision ordering a cut of beef at this restaurant is basically what I’m trying to say.

The bone-in filet was may absolute favorite. I have had many a great filet at Walt Disney World, but this was the absolute best I have ever tasted in my entire life. Charred exterior, flavorful, perfectly cooked, it was everything I would have hoped it would be.

The 24oz Porterhouse is huge as one would expect, probably my second favorite of all we had ordered.

IMG_6432

Last but not least, the Skirt Steak, which was my least favorite, but still very good.

IMG_6409

We also ordered the chicken as it came highly recommended. Apparently the owner of the parent company of STK told the staff this was his favorite dish, which of course the staff could not believe as this is a steakhouse. After having tried it, I could definitely see why. While the steaks are more my style, this is a fantastic alternative.

The side dishes were a little small, but all of them were very good. First up, the mushrooms.

IMG_6417The macaroni and cheese was phenomenal. Some of the best I have ever had.

I’m not much of an asparagus fan, but these were also good.

The one side that you absolutely must order is the sweet corn pudding. This is quite possibly my favorite side dish on the face of the earth. It is served warm, which might sound strange for what it is, but it is absolutely perfect.

No meal would be complete without dessert!

IMG_6443

The warm baked cookie was nothing new, but it was everything you could want it to be: a warm baked cookie topped with cold ice cream.

The “Bag O’ Donuts” was surprisingly unique in that the donuts were filled with caramel and the chocolate sauce was far superior to any I have had at other theme park establishments.

The oddest choice had to be the trio of ice cream, but it was “hipster-y” enough to make sense in the setting of STK Orlando…

After an early preview of the restaurant on Tuesday, I was worried that Disney Springs had made their first real misstep (at least as far as dining) with STK Orlando. However, after dining there last night, I stand corrected. Now, I’m still not sure how I feel about the club atmosphere in the later hours, but in our time there from 5pm-8pm, the music did get progressively louder, but the experience and service provided by the wait staff was phenomenal and made everyone feel comfortable. If you like loud music and a club atmosphere along with amazing food, this is where you want to be after 8:00 at night on your Walt Disney World vacation (that being said, the music choices were not all modern as there was nice mixture of music from the 1950’s to now). Otherwise, get here at 5pm and get ready for a phenomenal dining experience (or take part in lunch service which starts next month). STK Orlando, as much as I want to dislike it for the interior design and the nighttime vibe, is yet another invaluable addition to Disney Springs and will give The Boathouse a solid run-for-its-money over the months and years to come.

I would be curious to return at a later hour next time just to see if it resembles more of a Pleasure Island dance club than a steakhouse, but we shall have to wait and see on that…

If you’re looking to drop about $75-125 a person on a quality dining experience, this is probably one of if not your best option at Walt Disney World.

REVIEW: STK Orlando at Disney Springs Begins Lunch Service, But Is It Worth Your Time?

IMG_7514

Hopefully you have already read our extensive dinner review of STK Orlando before you delve into this one, but STK quietly began offering a lunch service on June 1st so we decided to see if lunch was near as good as the (what I thought was great, albeit expensive) dinner offerings.

IMG_7485

First off, a lot of items carry over from dinner, which I don’t think is necessarily a bad thing. If you read my dinner review, I thought it was very good and seemed to be priced on par with similar steakhouses in the area. That being said, lunch adds just a few different plates to the mix: 4 burgers/sandwiches and 4 lunch entrees, which are smaller versions of dinner entrees.

I had the STK Wagyu Beef Burger, which I was assured was essentially a larger version of the Lil’ BRGs offered as an appetizer. While the hamburger quality was certainly as good, I was not a big fan of the topping choices. The bun had great flavor, but the blue cheese and cherry peppers just didn’t work well together (of course the bacon was fine). I opted for the french fires as a side, which was my favorite part of my meal. I’m not sure if they just ran down to McDonald’s to get these, but they tasted just like their french fries. Seriously, they taste just like those you would find at McDonald’s, but expensive I guess…

The Grilled Chicken Club was a disaster. The bread in no way held the sandwich together, ti just absorbed all of the juices and then proceeded to implode upon itself.

IMG_7498

The few bites we had of the sandwich together were good, but it was just too big of a mess to enjoy.

IMG_7500

Josh ordered the Crispy Mahi Mahi sandwich, which overall was everyone’s favorite. This was just about perfect: the bun, the sauce, and the perfectly cooked fish just made for a really pleasant taste. I would seriously come back for this, but I would skip the side salad I think as it was rather plain. Yes, I would get the McDonald’s french fries instead…

IMG_7506

Since we only had three of the lunch entrees, I won’t tell you that lunch at STK Orlando isn’t worth your time. If you refer to the dinner review, there are plenty of items carrying over to lunch that I would highly recommend (along with the Mahi Mahi sandwich), so the question really becomes when is the best time to dine here. The atmosphere for Lunch is fairly quiet, so if you are afraid of the slightest chance of loud music, I would go during the restaurant’s lunch hours. If you would rather dress up a little and get more of a dinner experience for your money, I would stick with dinner. Otherwise, I still highly recommend STK Orlando, I just wouldn’t recommend many of the lunch specific options.
