PHOTOS, VIDEO: Streets of America New Paint Scheme, Star Wars Land Rises, and More in Latest Hollywood Studios Expansion Update

As construction continues on the two new themed lands for Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the last remaining section of the Streets of America is coming back to life, while the “Battle Escape” attraction is finally rising upon the Star Wars Land site. We check in again in our latest photo and video update…

We begin with our latest video update:

And now on to the photos…

 width=

“Battle Escape” is quite visible from several locations now.

 width=

 width=

Meanwhile, they continue to paint the remaining Streets of America facades. It should be interesting to see what these become.

 width=

 width=

 width=

The facade is also being completed so it is no longer a movie set.

 width=

Still not entirely sure what this barrier between Muppets Courtyard and Star Wars Land will be, but it is taking shape.

 width=

 width=

 width=

We’re still hoping that the former Writer’s Stop is becoming a lounge for the Sci-Fi Dine-In, but it is still unclear what exactly the space is becoming.

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

Some work is being done on the facade of Muppetvision 3-D.

 width=

 width=

The construction walls were expanded out towards the FastPass+ kiosk.

 width=

The extended queue for Muppetvision #-D still exists, but a walk down here is quite disturbing. It’s what the kids might call “Creepy AF”.

 width=

And now a look from the balcony of PizzeRizzo.

PHOTO REPORT: Hollywood Studios 6/27/17 (Disney Movie Magic, PIXAR Live, Cars 3, New Cupcake, Etc.)

Our latest photo report takes us to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, to see what is new and exciting for this park in transition…

The Hollywood That Was

 width=

Heavy demolition continues in the Hollywood Studios parking lot as they prepare to expand and reconfigure it ahead of Toy Story Land and Star Wars Land opening.

 width=

The stage in front of the Chinese Theater was gone for a few days, but sadly they could not figure out a roll-away stage to replace it, so the old one is already back up.

 width=

New trees were planted on Hollywood Boulevard for some reason. They are much smaller than those they replaced.

 width=

Rather than bore you with the same content twice, be sure to check out our photos of the latest progress on New York Street and Star Wars Land in photos here, or you can just check out the video below.

We Are Reporting on Packaging Now…

 width=

The packaging for the various Chip and Dale Snack Co. products was changed, and it is pretty much the cutest thing ever.

 width=

New versus old in a side by side comparison.

 width=

The vegetable chip packaging was also updated.

 width=

Get Your Licks on Route 66

 width=

A Cars 3 cupcake is now available at most counter service locations at Hollywood Studios.

 width=

We got it and decided we needed to take this cupcake out for a photo shoot. My life now consists of cupcake photo shoots and pretzel packages.

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

It wasn’t the worst cupcake I have ever had, but I prefer chocolate in my desserts. That being said, it pretty much tasted like strawberry Nesquik that was turned into a cake, which isn’t a bad thing.

 width=

 width=

WARNING: The white chocolate Lighting McQueen may be hard to break…

Cruzin’ into PIXAR Place

 width=

Cruz Ramirez from Cars 3 is now meeting guests towards the end of PIXAR Place.

 width=

 width=

The awning isn’t very conducive to early morning photos…

 width=

 width=

Cruz looks pretty cool up close with the metallic paint job.

 width=

 width=

 width=

This and That

 width=

The Express Transportation stops all have the bus times posted now, a nice offering.

 width=

Disney World is somehow able to sell this Thor mug in the parks, I’m not sure how as items like this weren’t allowed before. Disney Springs and the resorts are typically where you would have to go for stuff like this.

 width=

Some new items for pets now available in the Disney Tails line.

 width=

Limited edition Pirates of the Caribbean and Cars 3 MagicBands for sale.

 width=

A new Lion King MagicBand 2 for sale.

 width=

 width=

There is now a hard plastic version of the Haunted Mansion wallpaper phone case available.

 width=

 width=

A growing trend is Disney moving away from the “Disney Parks” branding on items. This will make it hard to tell what is park exclusive and what may also be at your local Disney Store. This is a real shame for guests who want to bring something unique home. Hopefully this doesn’t mean we will see less park exclusive items as well.

 width=

 width=

There are ads for PizzeRizzo plastered all over the Muppets Courtyard area now.

 width=

Seems odd to heavily advertise a restaurant that’s only open for lunch…

 width=

More Cars 3 Stuff

 width=

One Man’s Dream is currently home to the Cars 3 preview.

 width=

 width=

 width=

There are Cars 3 advertisements everywhere outside of the exhibit…

 width=

 width=

Inside, guests see a small exhibit very similar to what used to be displayed for new films over at the Magic of Disney Animation.

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

There was a curtain up when we visited. This has since become a merchandise stand…

 width=

Some of the art and displays around the final rooms were changed as well.

 width=

Star Wars props were replaced with Dr. Strange.

 width=

 width=

 width=

The Music of PIXAR Live! – A Symphony of Characters

 width=

We did the dining package for The Music of PIXAR Live! – A Symphony of Characters, which is running 3 shows a night through the summer. The dining package was a great deal for the food alone, never mind our seating which was dead center. That being said, if you don’t wish to buy one, a FastPass can yield you a very similar seat.

 width=

A nearby merchandise cart.

 width=

PIXAR Live takes over the Theater of the stars in the evenings.

This is also now the FastPass entrance, but it was just dining package earlier in the run.

Kessler Collection Likely to Open New Grand Bohemian Hotel Near Hollywood Studios, Site of Swan and Dolphin Tennis Courts

While rumors have been circling that Marriott would be looking to grow their presence at Walt Disney World by leveling the site of the Swan and Dolphin Hotel tennis courts, we now have some idea of their plans for the space.

Rumored plans for The Kessler Collection resort (possibly another Grand Bohemian Hotel for Orlando) operated by Marriott at Walt Disney World

Rumored plans for The Kessler Collection resort (possibly another Grand Bohemian Hotel for Orlando) operated by Marriott at Walt Disney World

A source inside of the Marriott organization has informed us that the Kessler Collection will likely be constructing a hotel on the former tennis court site. The Kessler Collection hotels are part of Mariott’s Autograph Collection Hotels, owned by Kessler and operated by Marriott. Kessler already has a strong presence in Central Florida with their Grand Bohemian Hotel Orlando, Bohemian Hotel Celebration, and the Castle Hotel Orlando, so it would not be strange for them to have yet another location in town. The Kessler hotels are typically smaller, luxury lifestyle hotels, which would be about right for a plot of this size. The hotels are typically themed to their location and this plot would be just across the street from Disney’s Hollywood Studios and the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. Below are examples from two of their other locations.

The outdoor covered space near Fantasia Gardens would also be leveled for additional parking, but the adjacent Fantasia Gardens mini-golf should remain in operation despite the proximity to the hotel. The hotel’s prescense would likely also help business at the adjacent courses, a plus for Disney.

Of course, none of this has been confirmed as of yet, but it seems highly likely at this time. It is unknown when such a project might commence, but likely it would be very soon to coincide with the needed demands of the opening of Star Wars Land.

PHOTOS, VIDEO: Toy Story Land Entrance, Coaster Track, and Star Wars Land Rise at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

It’s time to check on the latest progress on the expansion of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, including the addition of the Star Wars and Toy Story themed lands. First-up, we have a video of the current progress to share with you:

It is still unknown what is happening to the space that once was the Writer’s Stop, but we are hoping for a Sci-Fi Dine-In Lounge.

It is unclear exactly what is happening to Soundstage 12 adjacent to One Man’s Dream. Will it be re-themed to Toy Story or simply demolished slowly to ensure that One Man’s Dream will not have to close?

REVIEW: New “Out-Of-This-World” Menu Items at Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

The Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant is likely in my top 10 favorite restaurants at Walt Disney World, and I often bounce between this location and the Brown Derby as to which is my favorite at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. If you want a burger and some good desserts, there isn’t anywhere much better in my opinion, and the atmosphere is the most unique of any eatery at any Disney theme park anywhere. For a few bucks more than a counter service meal of a similar style, the atmosphere and superior sweets menu here make it an easy decision to splurge on table service over counter at this park.

 width=

Guests sit in “cars” and dine like it’s an old-school drive-in at the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater

The seating style is different from any other restaurant at Disney theme parks as it has “cars” parked in front of a screen, with two-by-two seating facing the rotating kaleidoscope of classic cartoons, movie trailers, and more.

With all this being said, Sci-Fi is obviously a fan favorite. Being a beloved eatery, when the menu was changed a few days ago, many were concerned if the changes were for the better. Here’s a look at the new menu in question:

 width=  width=  width=  width=  width=  width=

New to the menu are the following items:

  • The Boneless Chicken Wings now have 3 sauce options, rather than just the usual buffalo. The bone-in wings are now removed completely.
  • The Sci-Fi Salad is now a Wedge Salad.
  • The Build-Your-Own Angus Burger option is gone, but there are new burgers added.
  • The Salmon BLT Sandwich, Vegetarian Shepard’s Pie, Grilled Marinated Salmon Salad, Southwest Vegetarian Burger, and Sci-Fi-Fi Angus Burger were removed from the menu.
  • New entrees include the Classic American Burger, Southern Burger, Chili-Lime Fajita Salad, the Vegetarian Falafel Burger, and the Drive-In Barbecue Burger.

As you can see, it was a pretty major menu overhaul. So let’s find out how it is…

Boneless Chicken Wings ($10.00)

 width=

Boneless Chicken Wings ($10.00) with Buffalo Sauce

 width=

Boneless Chicken Wings ($10.00) with Sweet Chili Sauce

Your choice of Spicy Buffalo, Chipotle Barbecue, or Sweet Chili Sauce served with Celery Sticks and Blue Cheese Dressing

The Sweet Chili Sauce moved over from the Oasis Canteen, where these were available for a short period last year. Both sauces are great, but I recommend the buffalo if you want these to be spicier, and the sweet chili if you like a more flavorful taste. Funny enough, the buffalo sauce version was a staple at Backlot Express a few years ago as well, so both of these were available at counter service locations previously. Yes, these are basically just the chicken breast nuggets with sauce, but does that mean that we can’t enjoy them? I end up ordering these every time I come.

Classic Southern Burger ($19.00)

 width=

Classic Southern Burger ($19.00)

Our Signature Blend of Beef on a Brioche Roll, topped with a Fried Green Tomato, House-made Pimento Cheese, Bacon, and Lettuce

 width=

Classic Southern Burger ($19.00)

If you like fried-green tomatoes and pimento cheese, this is worth a try. The brioche bun on all of the Sci-Fi burgers enhance them nicely, while the beef patties are good enough to be at least more enjoyable than any Disney counter service location.

As always, the burgers come with the delicious steak fries, which you will also find for dinner now at the ABC Commissary next door.

Chili-Lime-Salmon Fajita Salad ($16.50)

 width=

Chili-Lime-Salmon Fajita Salad ($16.50)

Mixed Greens tossed with Roasted Corn, Peppers, Shredded Cheddar Cheese, Cilantro-Lime Vinaigrette topped with crispy Tortilla Chips and House-made Avocado Green Goddess Dressing

This salad is filling, fresh, and has quite a lot going on in it. If the dressing wasn’t so bland, this would be something we would order again. The salmon is surprisingly good and again, the portion size is more than fair.

Drive-In BBQ Burger ($19.00)

 width=

Drive-In BBQ Burger ($19.00)

Our Signature Blend of Beef, BBQ Spice, Brioche Bun, House-made BBQ Sauce, Bacon, and Cheddar served with Crispy-fried Jalapeño and Onion Straws

 width=

Drive-In BBQ Burger ($19.00)

I really enjoyed the Drive-In BBQ Burger, likely my favorite of any burger I’ve had here in my life. As you all know, I enjoy a lot of spice, and I thought the crispy fried jalapeños delivered while the other toppings were nice and flavorful. While I might try to switch the cheddar cheese for Swiss next time (more of a personal preference than a suggestion), I was still more than happy with this entree.

Out-of-This-World Turtle Cheesecake ($7.50)

 width=

Out-of-This-World Turtle Cheesecake ($7.50)

with Heath Bar, Pecans, Chocolate Chips, Caramel Sauce, and topped with Whipped Cream

It may not be the largest dessert, but it makes up for it in taste. This is basically a small cheesecake piece wrapped in Heath Bar, pecans, chocolate chips, and caramel sauce; and yes, it is as good as this description sounds. I love anything with Heath Bar, and if you do too, then I implore you to order this.

Milk Shakes ($6.00)

 width=

Sci-Fi Specialty Shake, Oreo Cookie, Chocolate, or Vanilla

My favorite dessert at Sci-Fi is still the simplest, and it’s the milkshakes. Pictured above is the current specialty shake, which is marshmallow and caramel over vanilla, and it is absolutely fantastic. The specialty shakes never disappoint, but you can’t go wrong with the Oreo Cookie version either. Sure, you can settle for chocolate and vanilla too if you wish. For $6.00, these are a great value as they are more than large enough to share between two guests after a full meal here.

OVERALL

In review, I think the menu changes here are quite positive. While the Build-Your-Own Burger option is gone, you can likely customize something to your liking between all of the burgers currently on the menu. I would like to return with someone who eats vegetarian options to see how the falafel burger holds up, but otherwise, Sci-Fi-Fi Dine-In is still an enjoyable, and often underrated table service restaurant you should try out if you have never been to it.

Star Wars Shows Moving to Rollaway Staging for Better Viewing of Studios’ Nighttime Shows

In order to give guests a better view of Disney Movie Magic and Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular in the evenings, Disney’s Hollywood Studios will be presenting Star Wars: A Galaxy Far, Far Away and the March of the First Order on temporary staging starting June 16th.

 width=

The new staging will go up in the morning for the daytime shows, but then be folded up and rolled away every evening for better viewing of the projection-heavy nighttime shows.

An Entire Pavilion Dedicated to Star Wars Land Coming to the D23 Expo 2017, Full Model on Display

It’s all coming up at D23 Expo 2017 on July 14-16 at the Anaheim Convention Center, across the street from Disneyland Resort. Tickets and more information are available now at D23expo.com.

PHOTOS: Former Catwalk Bar at Disney’s Hollywood Studios Returning for Club 33?

Many years ago, guests at the then Disney-MGM Studios could enjoy a drink high above a soundstage in the Catwalk Bar, an elevated establishment located above the Soundstage Restaurant. The bar was closed along with the Soundstage Restaurant in the late-1990’s to make way for the various Disney Junior shows that have occupied that space since. Well, the Catwalk Bar might be returning in some form…

The Catwalk Bar at the Disney-MGM Studios

The Catwalk Bar at the Disney-MGM Studios

With Club 33 announcing that they would open locations in each Disney World theme park, the Soundstage Restaurant seems like a good location. It’s elevated and relatively private, connected to the kitchen of a signature dining experience in the Brown Derby, and has that cool-factor of being in a beloved, forgotten location.

 width=

The former entrance to the Catwalk Bar adjacent to the Brown Derby

If this is the space, it is likely that Disney Junior would have to move elsewhere or close (or maybe become a dance party in a new location, similar to changes made at California Adventure).

 width=

The elevator and stairs to the Catwalk Bar, now suddenly boarded-up

This is purely speculation at this point, but the staircase and elevator inside of the Brown Derby which led to the Catwalk Bar are walled-off all of a sudden and some sort of work is clearly happening there.

PHOTOS, VIDEO: Toy Story Land Entrance, Writer’s Stop Gutted, Star Wars Land Expands in Latest Studios Update

It has been a while since we have seen any major changes in the Hollywood Studios landscape, but now with the expansion of Disney’s Animal Kingdom complete, it’s full speed ahead to Toy Story Land and the much-anticipated Star Wars themed land.

We have a video of all of the construction to share with you below, but we’ll then share pictures and give you a more in-depth description of the work following that.

 width=

We start over by MuppetVision 3-D…

 width=

The former Writer’s Stop has been stripped down to its bare steel.

 width=

 width=

 width=

A lot of work now happening in the area the was New York Street.

 width=

The barrier of Star Wars Land is just steps away, still rising.

 width=

A look from the balcony of PizzeRizzo doesn’t reveal much.

 width=

Most of the facade of Walt Disney: One Man’s Dream is covered with tarps, with the image of Walt removed from the marquee.

 width=

 width=

The backside of the marquee is completely gone.

 width=

This area will be the entrance to Toy Story Land, but it remains unclear how this transition will work.

 width=

 width=

For now, it appears that these original structures from 1989 will survive the demolition.

 width=

 width=

At the end of PIXAR Place, the walls are now appropriately Star Wars-related, as Toy Story Land is not actually located on this side. The walls also extended right up to the exit of the 3rd track at Toy Story Midway Mania.

 width=

The walls feature the artwork for Star Wars Land, but it is strangely not-centered and instead located in an alley behind some trees.

 width=

 width=

 width=

A cast member access pathway is all that is down this alleyway.

As always, stay tuned for more updates on the expansion of Disney’s Hollywood Studios as it progresses.
