REVIEW: Express Bus Transportation Service Breaks The Rules, But Exceeds Expectations

Since we broke the news about it a few weeks back, the general public and fans alike have been buzzing about the addition of an Express Transportation Service at Walt Disney World. For a fee, this service allows guests to bounce between all 4 Walt Disney World theme parks from internal bus stops within the parks.

Express Transportation Bus Service at Walt Disney World

The service costs $15 per person for 1 day, but can be purchased for up to 7 consecutive days for just $24 per person for the entire period. Guests can book the service at the front desk of their resort, at any guest relations location, or by credit card at the Express Bus Service stops themselves at each park.

Since an annual pass is technically a park-hopper ticket, all annual pass holders are eligible to use the service as well at both price levels.

Since so many of you asked us to do it, we went ahead and tested out the service yesterday so we could give you a good idea of how it works and how best to utilize it.

The busses depart on the half hour, meaning there is essentially a bus to a park departing each station every 10 minutes. So, a bus to Animal Kingdom from the Magic Kingdom may depart on the 10’s and 40’s each hour up until park close (at Animal Kingdom). The one caveat to this is that it is pretty hard to catch nighttime spectaculars near closing time at one park and make it back to another park. For example, last night, we could not have seen Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular and made it back to the Magic Kingdom. The fireworks were presented at 9:30pm, but the last Express Bus to Magic Kingdom was at 9:50pm. Getting to the bus stop just 5 minutes after the show ended on a crowded evening would be quite the challenge for anyone, considering that the check-in spot there is down by Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster.

Other than that, the busses remain strict to their schedules. That being said, if you miss one, another is only 30 minutes behind, or you could always call an audible and just go on whatever bus is next, which will promise a wait of 10 minutes or less until departure for one of the other 3 parks at Disney World.

We never experienced any problems of busses not running on schedule, and other than our last bus ride of the night, we were almost alone on every ride. I became concerned that the system was losing Disney money until we caught the 8:50PM bus from Hollywood Studios to Magic Kingdom, in which all of the seats were filled before we departed. Other than that, there was typically just one other family onboard the bus with us.

Express Transportation Bus Service at Walt Disney World

The four stops within the parks are convenient enough, although it is weird to enter theme parks from these areas. The busses depart and arrive at the points you will see indicated on the pamphlet above.

Express Transportation Bus Check-In at Epcot, Walt Disney World

The Express Transportation Service does break some “rules” of Disney theme parks, mainly allowing guests to see large portions of the backstage areas. In actuality, this is a really cheap way to see backstage at the parks without taking a tour. Highlights included glimpses of Pandora: The World of AVATAR, Tower of Terror, Test Track, Carousel of Progress, and more. That being said, it is far from the experience of a backstage tour, but you will get that special feeling of being “behind the magic” and seeing places in the parks you may have never seen before.

Space Mountain from the bus route to and from Magic Kingdom park

Pandora: the World of AVATAR from the Express Bus to Animal Kingdom

When you are going to be taking the bus, all you need to do is check-in with the guest relations cast member at the check-in location. They will be able to check you in for your bus and can also provide the bus schedule for the rest of the day to you, should need it. When it is time to take your bus, a guest relations cast member will walk you to the vehicle. Along the way, signage reminds guests that photography of any kind is not allowed in backstage areas.

My only gripe is the timing of the busses towards park closing times. I wish they would at least give you 30-60 minutes past the closure of the park or the end of the last nighttime show to make it to a bus, but instead it is the next scheduled time after park close, which in many case will give you anywhere from 5-25 minutes to make it, possibly. I guess the viewpoint is that you could always still get a normal bus after that time, but it kind of defeats the purpose of the service in some ways.

Overall, I was overwhelmed with what a tremendous value this service is. First off, by using this service, you ensure that you will only need to go through the parking and security/park entry process once. The bus service will drop you off inside of the other parks, meaning you are in the thick of things as soon as you get to your destination.

In our experience yesterday, here were the travel times between destinations:

  • Magic Kingdom to Animal Kingdom – 25 minutes
  • Animal Kingdom to Epcot – 22 minutes
  • Epcot to Hollywood Studios – 13 minutes
  • Hollywood Studios to Magic Kingdom – 17 minutes

Beyond the conveniences mentioned above, it saves a tremendous amount of time in park-hopping. A bus every 30 minutes to each park is perfect, where even if you just miss a bus by a minute, it isn’t going to ruin your day. You are guaranteed a bus every half hour and knowing when that bus is coming already makes the service a million times more reliable than the regular bus service at Walt Disney World.

We were able to hit a list of our favorite things at all 4 parks using the service. In fact, within one hour, we arrived at Hollywood Studios from Epcot, rode Star Tours, ordered a Blue Milkshake, and were back on a bus to the Magic Kingdom to enjoy the rest of the evening. This was an insanely cool thing to do that we never could have done without the service. It would have at least taken another hour to do this via car or the regular Disney transportation offerings.

Whether you are only visiting the parks for a short period of time and NEED to hit all of your favorite attractions, or looking for a hassle-free way to get around the parks for a week, the Express Transportation Service is a tremendous value. The convenience and price can not be beat. Yes, it does take you to places you aren’t supposed to see, but it offers a service that takes so much of the pressure out of planning a Walt Disney World vacation and gives you a lot more freedom to do just about whatever you could want to across four parks in just one day (FastPass reservations permitting of course). It could also allow you to remove the need for a rental car from your trip (provided you don’t need to go to see any SCREENZ down the road at Universal Orlando). As a resort guest, I would enjoy return service to my resort somehow at the end of the day, but other than that, this is truly the only way to park hop in my book.

In a world of unnecessary vacation add-on packages, this is the first one that will certainly improve your theme park experience if you plan on park-hopping. The Express Transportation service is highly recommended and a nice way to take some commuting stress out of a trip to Walt Disney World.

BREAKING: Disney Removing Large Cups from Counter Service Locations, But Why?

In a strange turn of events, several counter service locations at Walt Disney World recently removed large drink cups from their menus.

A large drink cup I acquired at Pecos Bill's just a month ago, now gone from the menu.

A large drink cup I acquired at Pecos Bill’s just a month ago, now gone from the menu.

The confirmed locations so far include Sleepy Hollow Refreshments, Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe, Casey’s Corner, Westward Ho, and Pecos Bill’s Tall Tale Inn and Cafe, all located at the Magic Kingdom.

Now, many counter service locations at other parks do not have large cups because the establishments feature self-serve soda fountains where guests are able to get refills on their own. The Electric Umbrella, Sunshine Seasons, Restaurantosaurus, and Backlot Express are examples of these types of counter service locations. Almost all counter service locations at resorts have these self-serve fountains as well, most sporting the Rapid Fill technology which limited the time and amount of refills the cups can be used for.

We have been unable to confirm why this is happening and if the trend will continue, but there are several possibilities here. The first is that Disney is trying to up-sell guests on souvenir cups. Westward Ho and Pecos Bill’s offer a fairly large souvenir cup shared like a jug, but even the souvenir mugs at Casey’s Corner and Cosmic Ray’s are much smaller than a large fountain beverage. That being said, Sleepy Hollow does not currently sell a souvenir cup.

From my personal collection: as you can see, the Country Bears jug is quite large, but the other souvenir cups are considerably smaller.

The second is that it is a cost cutting measure since most locations don’t even need to stock the large cups since they use a self-serve drink fountain. In addition, guests could be ordering just one large fountain drink for $3.69 and sharing it rather than buying one drink for each guest in their party. Disney could make a lot more money at $3.29 a drink if everyone in the group buys one.

With the busy holiday crowds, it could also be a way of streamlining service at some of the resort’s busiest eateries.

For those hoping self serve fountains or Coke Freestyle machines will be added, I wouldn’t hold your breath. Most of the locations mentioned above are far to small for either of these things to be installed.

Whatever the reason, we will have to keep our eyes peeled to see if the large cups return to these locations or begin to vanish from more around Walt Disney World.

REVIEW: ABC Commissary Dinner at Hollywood Studios Introduces New Menu & Food Delivery; Could It Be Good?

As we reported last week, the ABC Commissary at Disney’s Hollywood Studios has started a new dinner service with a new menu and the added service of your meal being delivered to your table after you order. Yesterday was the first day of the new dinner service, so we decided to head over and try it out.

img_8685

The dinner service begins at 3:30pm and it is denoted as a different service on the menu board outside of the restaurant.

img_8686

It wasn’t terribly busy when we visited, but this entire area can be filled with a queue of guests at times.

ABC Commissary Dinner Menu

img_8687

The new dinner menu is largely different from lunch, but includes the chicken and ribs combo platter which moved over from Fairfax Fare and the Mediterranean Salad that is also available here for lunch.

img_8689

A selection of appetizers are available as well.

img_8690

The Autumn Harvest Cupcake is still available here if you are looking for it.

img_8691

Some alcoholic beverages available as well. If you want to see the full menu including all drink options, you can check it out here.

Food Delivery Service

img_8688

After a guest orders, they receive a Table-Tracker device (which is now used at many Disney World establishments, including Captain Cook’s and more). The table-tracker links to the receipt, so there is some correspondence between your recipe and the device you place on the table.

img_8695

You simply place the tracker on the table and your food and drinks will be brought to you when they are ready. While the tracking seemed to work perfectly as the server certainly knew where we were, it did take nearly 20-minutes. Now, this was the first night of the new dinner service, so I am more than willing to give them time to figure things out. Regardless, I was so happy to not be standing at the counter waiting, that it wasn’t a big deal to me. That being said, if you are on vacation and have some FastPass reservations to make, I can see where waiting 15-20 minutes could be frustrating. I’m sure they will figure it out in the weeks ahead… well, I hope…

img_8712

The cast member who brought the food was nice enough to bring a selection of condiments and some plastic silverware wrapped in a napkin, which is a nice touch for a counter service restaurant.

Now on to the real story, how was the food?

Cheddar Jalepeno Poppers ($5.49)

k3b3qusr

When I read the description of the new Southwest Burger, I was excited about the Cheddar Jalepeno Poppers, but I wasn’t really in the mood for a burger and I’m slightly adverse to avocado spread in quick service form. When I saw these offered as an appetizer, I immediately knew I was ordering them. They did not disappoint.

A look inside a Cheddar Jalepeno Popper

A look inside a Cheddar Jalepeno Popper

Now, I have expressed my love for spicy food items on this site before, and because of that, I have ordered similar items t0 these at many a restaurant over the years. That being said, these types of snacks have always been disappointing, whether the cheese inside tasted bland or the peppers inside were a little off in flavor. None of those problems existed here as these Poppers had a perfect consistency, a good cheddar cheese flavor, and were perfectly accompanied by a ranch dipping sauce.

Mediterranean Salad ($9.99)

img_8701

Mixed Greens, Tomatoes, Onions, Peppers, Kalamata Olives and Feta Cheese tossed in a Greek Vinaigrette and served with Hummus and Pita Chips.

This salad was pretty solid. The feta cheese gave it a nice flavor and everything tasted fresh. The hummus and pita chips were particularly good, which is good to keep in mind as that is also offered as its own side dish if you wish.

Chimichurri Steak ($17.49)

img_8707

Sirloin Steak topped with Chimichurri Sauce and served with Fire-roasted Corn Medley and Steak Fries.

I want to start with my favorite part of the meal: the steak fries. While these are no longer located at The Plaza Restaurant at the Magic Kingdom, they are back in all of their glory here. I would stop here just for a side of these. They are painfully simple, but a million times better than the regular fries at all of Disney’s other counter service establishments.

The corn medley is good and the steak honestly wasn’t awful. It was a little hard to cut with a plastic knife, but the flavor was solid, certainly better than most other counter service steaks I’ve had at counter service establishments. They did bring me hot sauce along with the steak (without me asking for it), so take that for what you will.

Lemon Pepper Salmon ($14.99)

img_8711

Seared Salmon served with Cous Cous and sautéed Green Beans.

The seared salmon is phenomenal. Great flavor and a generous portion that won’t make you feel horrible about your counter service decisions. The couscous and the green beans are both solid side options as well.

Overall

While ABC Commissary more often than not is a restaurant that I tell guests to avoid, I think the new dinner service is a vast improvement and makes the location a much more viable option when visiting Hollywood Studios. If you absolutely do not want to eat at a table service restaurant for dinner in this park, I think ABC Commissary is where you will want to go if you don’t just want chicken breast nuggets or a hamburger.

It is certainly better than Fairfax Fare’s new tex-mex menu, superior to counter service pizza, and more interesting than anything you can order at Backlot Express currently. While I enjoyed the new menu at Min & Bill’s Dockside Diner, the ABC Commissary meals will offer you much larger portions with real sides that will make for a filling and enjoyable dinner. For a few bucks more, I would just go to 50’s Prime Time Cafe or the Sci-Fi Dine-In, but if that isn’t an option, you may want to find yourself here for dinner. But not lunch, you still probably shouldn’t do lunch…

ABC Commissary accepts the Disney Dining Plans and also currently offers a 20% discount for Walt Disney World Annual Passholders.

Additional Star Tours Destinations Returning Soon at Walt Disney World

Last year, when the Jakku and BB-8 sequences were added in celebration of the release of Star Wars – The Force Awakens, those coordinates became locked at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland’s versions of Star Tours: The Adventures Continue. Starting soon, those 2 sequences will be randomized like all of the others in the attraction.

Star-Tours-Poster-Crop

Beginning December 18th, 2016, the Kashyyk, Hoth,  and Tatooine sequences and the hologram transmissions from Admiral Ackbar, Yoda, and Princess Leia will be available once again, with Jakku and BB-8 added into the randomized scene process.

This will likely last until scenes from Episode VIII are added to the attraction in late-2017, so enjoy it while you can.

Star Wars Fireworks Added Through Conclusion of 2016

Despite stating that Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular would not return until 12/31, the spectacular has been added nightly starting December 16th at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Starting in summer 2016, a new Star Wars fireworks show, "Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular," will debut to guests at Disney's Hollywood Studios. The nightly show will combine fireworks, pyrotechnics, special effects and video projections that will turn the nearby Chinese Theater and other buildings into the twin suns of Tatooine, a field of battle droids, the trench of the Death Star, Starkiller Base and other Star Wars destinations. The show also will feature a tower of fire and spotlight beams, creating massive lightsabers in the sky. (Disney/Lucasfilm)

The fireworks are now scheduled at 10:30pm on the 16th, 9:30pm on December 17th, and at 6:15pm the 18th through the 30th.

Disney is expected to make additions from Rogue One to the show upon its return.

Jingle Bell, Jingle BAM! will also continue to take place as scheduled.

Rivers of Light Delayed into 2017, Full List of New Additions for Disney World Next Year

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — The unveiling of a magical, mythical world of floating mountains, bioluminescent rainforests and soaring Banshees anchors an exciting 2017 at Walt Disney World Resort – a year filled with new water park fun, a new festival for Epcot, more openings at Disney Springs, an awe-inspiring nighttime experience at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and much more.

Opening in summer 2017 at Disney's Animal Kingdom, Pandora-The World of Avatar will bring a variety of new experiences to the park, including a family-friendly attraction called Na’vi River Journey and new food & beverage and merchandise locations. Pongu Pongu (pictured here) will be a special drink location with a design that is as eclectic as its Expat owner. Here’s a roundup at what the new year has in store:

Pandora – The World of Avatar – A transformational experience unlike any other, Pandora – The World of Avatar, opens in summer 2017. In collaboration with filmmaker James Cameron and Lightstorm Entertainment, Disney is bringing to life the fantasy world of Pandora, inspired by Cameron’s epic film AVATAR, in a breathtaking new land at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Avatar Flight of Passage will send guests flying above the jungles of Pandora on a Mountain Banshee. Bioluminescent rainforests dramatically wrap around Na’vi River Journey, a family-friendly boat ride.

Hungry adventurers can recharge at Satu’li Canteen, the main dining location, or Pongu Pongu, a drink kiosk with a design as eclectic as its expat owner. Shoppers can stock up on Na’vi cultural items, toys, science kits and more at Windtraders. “From the place making to the two extraordinary attractions that will be in the land…these promise to set new high-watermarks for the experiential magic we give our guests,” said Bob Chapek, Chairman, Disney Parks and Resorts.

More Additions to Disney Springs in 2017 – With the multi-year makeover of this hip, happening district for dining, shopping and entertainment in the homestretch, still more exciting openings are on tap for 2017. Great new food and beverage venues lead the way.

  • Paddlefish – Sleek and modern after a bow-to-stern transformation from the former Fulton’s Crab House, Paddlefish will serve fresh seafood, steaks and chops. Unique menu choices for seafood lovers include a build-your-own boil. A new rooftop lounge will serve up a late-night menu and shipshape views of the water and Disney Springs. Open for lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch.
  • Planet Hollywood Observatory – Longtime Downtown Disney-goers will remember the iconic domed restaurant that drew celebrities and fans of the Hollywood scene. The reborn space will be themed to stars of a different kind: a turn-of-the-20th-Century observatory serving up amazing burgers and sandwiches created by celebrity chef Guy Fieri, and craft cocktails whose names are inspired by the planets and space travel. Movie memorabilia, video screens, contemporary music and themed merchandise complete the scene.
  • The Polite Pig – A sister restaurant to the Ravenous Pig, a favorite with Orlando locals, The Polite Pig will bring the same focus on genuine Florida cuisine to a broader global audience at Disney Springs. Lunch and dinner menus will feature a variety of wood-fired smoked and grilled items as well as an innovative beverage program that serves all drinks on tap, including beer, wine and cocktails.
  • Wine Bar George – Orlando master sommelier George Miliotes uncorks his first Disney wine bar in a space reminiscent of a winemaker’s estate warmed by oak wood and cozy lighting. Small plates dominate the food menu but it will be the wines with a starring role: more than 100 selections both by the bottle and the glass in a range of varietals and vintages.

Home to four distinct neighborhoods, Disney Springs treats guests to a world of beautiful open-air promenades, flowing springs, arcing foot bridges and waterfront charm. Venues have doubled – to approximately 150.

New Family Raft Ride at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park – Aboard this family-style raft adventure, guests will be immersed in the story of Captain Mary Oceaneer. Legend holds that this treasure hunter roamed the seven seas in search of undersea artifacts – until a rogue storm marooned her at Typhoon Lagoon. Guests gently ascend in treasure rafts, only to plunge into a whitewater adventure where they will encounter some of Mary’s deep sea booty. When it opens in spring 2017, it will be one of the longest attractions (2 minutes) at Disney’s Water Parks.

Rivers of Light – Coming in 2017, this powerful theatrical production takes Disney’s Animal Kingdom guests on a magnificent emotional journey – a visual mix of water, fire, nature and light choreographed to an original musical score. Continuing the park’s transformation from a day-into-nighttime experience, the amazing after-dark show on the banks of Discovery River celebrates the majesty of nature and the connection between animals and humans in the world. With innovative and never-before-seen technology, Rivers of Light will be unlike any other production ever staged at Walt Disney World Resort.

Epcot International Festival of the Arts – Epcot welcomes an all-new festival playing winter weekends and treating guests to a triple scoop of artful fun. For six colorful weekends (Fridays through Mondays) Jan. 13-Feb. 20, visual, culinary and performing arts will take center stage. Each weekend will feature taste bud-tempting and eye-dazzling creations from the Disney culinary team. Meantime, exciting new art from various media will tempt art lovers. Because the artwork will change out, it’s a new art festival every weekend. In addition, the lagoon-side stage at American Gardens Theatre will pulse with favorite showtunes performed by Broadway talent. In a collaboration with Disney Theatrical, songs from some of Disney on Broadway’s award-winning shows including The Lion King, Newsies and Aladdin will be performed.

Unique All-New Experiences for Dining, Star Wars Fans – A new adventure in Disney dining and the ultimate Star Wars tour are being offered to guests in 2017.

Disney’s famed monorail is your connection in a movable feast called Highway in the Sky Dine-Around. The new experience gives guests priority boarding on the monorail for a distinctly Disney dining experience with stops for cocktails, appetizers, dinner and dessert. From a welcome cocktail at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, guests call at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort (apps), Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa (entree) and back to the Contemporary for dessert, cordials and coffee. Offered Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

For the ultimate Star Wars fan comes the ultimate tour. An all-new Star Wars Guided Tour is a seven-hour immersion in all current Star Wars experiences at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Character greetings, themed dining, ride experiences, insider’s tours, dessert party and VIP viewing of Star Wars: a Galactic Spectacular are among highlights. Offered Mondays and Saturdays, it’s part of several new Star Wars additions announced in December 2016 for the park, including a new onstage sequence in the daytime experience “Star Wars: A Galaxy Far, Far Away.” Star Wars-themed lands are planned for Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort.

New Cabins and Deluxe Villas coming to Disney’s Wilderness Lodge – In 2017, a proposed new Disney Vacation Club Resort, Copper Creek Villas & Cabins at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Resort, is scheduled to open, featuring new Resort accommodations that include plans for Deluxe Villas and unique waterfront cabins. Other enhancements coming to Disney’s Wilderness Lodge include a brand-new bar & grill, in addition to a quick-service restaurant. A sweeping re-imagination of the former Hidden Springs Pool, part of Boulder Ridge Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, is also scheduled to open in summer 2017. Named Boulder Ridge Cove, this area will feature an expanded sun deck and zero-depth-entry pool.

New Cheerleading, Dance Venue for ESPN Wide World of Sports – A first-of-its-kind venue specifically designed for the high-energy world of cheerleading and dance team competition opens its doors in 2017 at ESPN Wide World of Sports. The complex is collaborating with Varsity Spirit, the nation’s top cheerleading organization, in bringing the new multi-use venue to life. The venue will include a flexible design that allows for as many as four competition areas. With the ability to seat more than 8,000 guests, the sports and entertainment venue also can accommodate six regulation basketball courts, six regulation volleyball courts or be configured for concerts.

VIDEO: The Story of Walt Disney World’s Never-Constructed Disney Mountain

A few days ago, we here at WDWNT set a lofty goal to raise for the Toys for Tots charity with the promise that we would divulge all of the details of a Walt Disney World project that had never seen the light of day if and when we arrived at our desired sum. Well, we did in fact raise over $7000.00 for the Toys for Tots Foundation this year, and so we informed the world of a little something called Disney Mountain.

screen-shot-2016-11-22-at-12-04-00-pm

This project intended for the Walt Disney World Resort in the early-1990’s was the first plan for the use of the space between Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. This massive, man-made structure would eventually become Pleasure Island, Typhoon Lagoon, a multitude of Disney Resort hotels, and other pieces of the  Disney Parks that we know and love today. What exactly was it? Well, you can watch the video below to find out as the WDW News Today Podcast crew reviews the plans in our trademark Back to the Future segment. It is a long and exhaustive look at a fascinating project that may have been the last attempt at bringing some of Walt’s EPCOT to life.
