REVIEW: Fairfax Fare at Hollywood Studios Introduces Giant Baked Potatoes

Just a few weeks ago, the turkey leg was retired from Hollywood Studios and Fairfax Fare on Sunset Boulevard added some large baked potato dishes to their menu. We decided to head over last weekend to try these out, and here is what we found on our starchy expedition:

Southwest Salad at Fairfax Fare

Small Southwest Salad (Side)

The side salad (served with each of the large baked potatoes) was a surprisingly good offering, so much so that I would rather they devise a full entree out of this. Looking at this, I was prepoared for the worst, but it actually was pretty tasty, blending fresh, healthy ingredients with a sweet corn flavor. Seriously WDW, please make this a counter service entree.

This wasn’t bad, but it was mediocre at best. I love baked potatoes, so even the most poorly prepared one is probably something I can stomach. There was nothing special about this, but it’s probably a good addition in a park with fairly limited counter service options right now. The potato was cooked well enough and the toppings are what you would expect from any counter service location. It is large and filling for the price, but doesn’t deliver on the flavor. It’s not the worst quick serve meal and it’s not the best, it’s just sort of middle of the road. I don’t know how many other ways I could possibly say “meh” in this review.

While the potato was of the same quality here, the tri-tip with brown gravy was fairly gross. It reminded me of the infamous “stewed beef” from the Diamond Horseshoe Saloon at the Magic Kingdom, and if you remember that review, you know why that is a bad thing… a very bad thing.

Vanilla Cupcake with Strawberry Buttercream ($5.59)

The strawberry buttercream on top tasted like warm strawberry ice cream, which somehow isn’t gross. A quality cupcake that blends well with the strawberry cream on top, yet probably pretty forgettable in the grand scheme of Walt Disney World desserts. This is a pleasant dessert offering and a cute photo-op if you love Minnie Mouse, probably no the best dessert option unless you absolutely need a Strawberry snack and are eating here.

Overall, I’m happy about the loss of the turkey leg from another park (as the sight of them makes me fairly ill), but I was hoping for something more here. Honestly, the loaded baked potato was solid, but would work better as a smaller side item. It is better than the Disney counter service french fries without a doubt, bnut does little to warrant being a full meal at a counter service location. Also, the one-pounders toppings are vile…

PHOTOS: Disney World Rolls Out Free Mosquito Repellent to Combat Zika Virus

On Saturday, we told you about the introduction of complimentary bug repellent at the Disney World theme parks and Disney Springs to help combat the Zika Virus presence in central Florida. On Sunday, Disney rolled out the program resort wide. Here’s how it works…

Mosquito Prevention Kiosk in Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom

Mosquito Prevention Kiosk in Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom

These kiosks are located all around the parks and Disney Springs. Cast members are handing pamphlets out to guests about mosquito prevention and then invite them to apply repellent to themselves. On Sunday, cast were tallying the number of guests using the program. By mid-afternoon, one kiosk at Disney Springs informed us that they already had over 50 guests who had taken advantage of the program.

Repellent Basket at a kiosk in Disney Springs

Guests do not actually receive anything to keep with them, but they can stop at these kiosks and apply the repellent to themselves. All resort rooms at Walt Disney World have similar bottles of repellent placed in them by housekeeping. Guests do in fact get to keep these bottles distributed to their guest room.

It is unknown for how long Walt Disney World will offer the repellent, but it will likely be until the threat of Zika is gone from the Central Florida area.

Children Now Require Biometric Finger Scan to Enter Walt Disney World Theme Parks

Children under the age of 10 have never been required to scan a finger when entering a Walt Disney World theme park, something required of all ticket holders over that age for many years at the Vacation Kingdom of the World. Starting just last week, children under age 10 now are required to have their fingerprint scanned to enter the Walt Disney World theme parks, water parks, and DisneyQuest.

Disney-MagicBand

A guest relations cast member we spoke to over the weekend confirmed the changes after 3 separate reports were sent to us by WDWNT readers.

The change is reportedly part of the continuing effort to fight ticket fraud and Walt Disney World Resort ticket resales. Child tickets in the past would have no fingerprint associated with them, nor would they require photo ID, so it would have been very easy to transfer tickets between guests under the age of 10.

Disney has made no official statement on the new policy beyond the instructions given to front gate cast members at their theme parks.

Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster Refurbishment Scheduled For This Fall

Even though there isn’t a whole lot still open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios right now (just look at our aerial photos and video if you don’t know what I’m talking about), Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster starring Aerosmith will closing for a refurbishment this Fall.

Rock 'N' Roller Coaster starring Aerosmith

Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster starring Aerosmith

The ride will be closed October 27th through November 9th, 2016 for some regular maintenance.

This will likely be bad news for guests visiting during this period as it will lengthen waits at the other remaining attractions in the park.

VIDEO: Dopey Take Tremendous Tumble During “Fantasmic!” at Disney World

Unless you were living under a rock last night, you have probably seen this video of last night’s Fantasmic at Disney’s Hollywood Studios…

Don’t worry, the performer was fine following the incident. It does make one wonder if the ever-lawsuit conscious Disney Company will now make any modifications to the steamboat in the finale of the show, or worse. Only time will tell…

UPDATE: Steamboat Removed from “Fantasmic!” at Disney World Following Character Fall

Following Dopey’s tremendous fall from the top of the Steamboat Willie Steamboat that regularly appears during the finale of Fantasmic! at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Walt Disney World has pulled the Steamboat from the show and replaced it with a simple water-wall effect.

Thanks to @WDWResortRoblox on twitter for sending along the following screenshot from a live stream of “Fantasmic!” last night at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World:

CpYYJsPWEAE1Zwk

The assumption is that the boat will be modified for the safety of the performers, but there has been no official word from Disney as of yet. There is no word on when the Steamboat might return to the show at this time, but seeing as it is considered the highlight of the show by many guests, one would assume it will be back soon.
