Disney Introducing Add-On Star Wars Augmented Reality Game at Theme Parks

From the Disney Parks Blog:

Disney Floral & Gifts, in partnership with Lucasfilm, is happy to announce the launch of the newStar Wars Rebels Interactive Adventure. For those brave enough to answer the call for this mission, an adventure awaits. To help you get started, below are 4 mission details you’ll need to know to thwart the Empire!

Top Secret Mission Detail #1: The Mission

The Star Wars Rebels Interactive Adventure takes you from your resort room “barracks” on an interactive role-playing mission to the Star Tours Attraction. You’ll go “under cover” as an Imperial Security Officer, complete with rank bar, cap, satchel, and diversion tattoos. The Empire is always watching, so make sure they don’t identify you as the Rebel Spy!

Top Secret Mission Detail #2: The Tech

The adventure features unique technology exclusive to this experience. Through an augmented reality app on your smartphone, Ezra Bridger leads you on a mission to thwart the Empire. By scanning targets or “wayfinders” featured around your resort room and Star Tours, Ezra leads you to hidden information and gear needed to complete your mission.

The rebel tech on your phone allows you to experience the adventure again and again, even after returning home from the Disney Parks!

Top Secret Mission Detail #3: The Gear

With equipment to help on your adventure, the mission includes a disguise and your data card to transmit information to the rebels at Star Tours. Other collectibles include a Jedi holocron, lightsaber, Rebel journal, 4 Empire recruitment posters, and an Empire door banner.

Have multiple rebels in your party? You can add-on elements of this adventure for everyone to experience!

Top Secret Mission Detail #4: The Reward

Once you’ve completed your mission, you’ll be rewarded like any true hero with a Medal of Bravery. Presented in a rebel lock box wrapped with a Phoenix symbol, this medal can only be recovered upon completion of your mission. Like the one seen in the film Star Wars: A New Hope, the medal’s design features a lanyard, which can be personalized, to identify your victory.

Are you brave enough to answer the call and thwart the Empire’s efforts? Then enlist today by visiting the Disney Floral and Gifts at Walt Disney World, (407-WDW-GIFT) or Disney Floral and Gifts at Disneyland (714-781-GIFT). Delivery to Disney resorts begins August 15th.

The package is a bit pricey at $499.99, but includes the following:

  • (1) Empire Door Banner
  • (4) Empire Recruitment Posters
  • (1) Imperial Security Satchel
  • (1) Imperial Rank Bar
  • (1) Rebel Utility Blanket
  • (1) Medal of Bravery with box and fabric wrap
  • (1) Set of Rebel of Diversion Tattoos

  • (1) Holocron
  • (1) Wayfinder set and Mission Briefing
  • (1) Imperial Security Cap
  • (1) Kanan’s Lightsaber
  • (1) Star Wars Rebel Journal

RUMOR: The Great Mickey Ride Replacing Movie Ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios?

It has been a time for crazy rumors the last few months, and it seems there isn’t an end in sight under the Bob Chapek regime. The latest indicates that once the 3 year sponsorship deal between Turner Classic Movies and Disney is up, the Great Movie Ride would be replaced with something called “The Great Mickey Ride”.

A Theatrical Journey Ð Walt Disney World Resort guests can take a ride through the most famous film sets in silver screen history at The Great Movie Ride at DisneyÕs Hollywood Studios. Housed in a full-scale reproduction of HollywoodÕs world-famous Chinese Theater, the ride-through attraction travels through a soundstage tour of such memorable movie scenes as the ÒCasablancaÓ airport farewell, the Yellow Brick Road to Emerald City from ÒWizard of Oz,Ó the ÒRaiders of the Lost ArkÓ Well of Souls and many more. DisneyÕs Hollywood Studios is one of four theme parks at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. (Scott Miller, photographer)

While details are scarce at this point, rumors indicate the ride would be trackless and is also being developed to go somewhere at the Disneyland Resort simultaneously.

The latest trend in the parks seems to be Disney removing any connections to franchises that Disney does not own (Twilight Zone for example), and the Great Movie Ride is packed with a lot of films that Disney has absolutely no ownership over. The line of thinking here would be to feature the first ride ever devoted to Mickey Mouse (clearly the property of the Walt Disney Company), something that has been attempted many times over the last 60 years but never built in any Disney theme park.

If plans remained unchanged and Disney pulls the trigger on this project, the Great Movie Ride would close just after the opening of the Star Wars-themed land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. However, keep in mind that this project is very blue sky at this point and may never see the light of day, but the Great Movie Ride’s removal is still a likely target for the company at this time.

REVIEW, PHOTOS, VIDEO: Star Wars Fireworks Dessert Party Gets Revamped with “Special Edition” Treatment

On Sunday, I attended the very first of the newly revamped “Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular Dessert Party at Disney’s Hollywood Studios”, the latest version of the event we provided you a review of back in January. The largest change is in venue as the Florida heat and rain finally convinced Disney to find a new, indoor home for the food and beverage portion of the evening. That new home is Star Wars Launch Bay and Disney used to opportunity given with the move to revamp a number of the offerings and the logistics of the event.

The party is $69.00 for adults and $39.00 for children ages 3-9 (includes a souvenir Chewbacca stein for each guest) and advance reservations are highly recommended. All food and drinks pictured are included with that price. The event is hosted nightly.

IMG_9463

The dessert party portion of the event now takes place inside of Star Wars Launch Bay.

IMG_9464

Check-in is done at what was going to be the FastPass+ verification podium, but FastPass+ was never rolled out to Launch Bay, so now it is just used for this process.

IMG_9465

Even outside of what is the main dining area for the event, there are tables for guest use. The area can b ea little cramped, so it is nice that they are encouraging guests to roam around Launch Bay while still enjoying their treats.

IMG_9466

The main area roped off from other guests is to the right of the Kylo Ren meet and greet on the bottom floor.

IMG_9467

Here, guests will find a similar, yet upgraded experience compared to what was offered before.

IMG_9469

New items include a flatbread with 2 different sauces, sugar cookies, an R2-D2 cupcake, and a Darth Maul red velvet brownie.

IMG_9472

The skewers, formerly referred to as sabers but changed for legal reasons (too many kids fighting with them I guess), are still here.

IMG_9473

IMG_9474

IMG_9476

The flatbread is served with both a black bean dip and a roasted red pepper hummus. While I will miss the biscuits, this probably makes a little more sense at a dessert party.

IMG_9478

IMG_9480

IMG_9481

The blue milk panna cotta is still offered as well.

IMG_9482

IMG_9483

IMG_9485

My favorite treat, the Freeze-fried Nutella Truffle has stayed on as well, offering a treat that is as fun to watch being made as it is to devour seconds later.

IMG_9487

Many of the fun dessert names were removed, but they are still as good (maybe even a little better given that the elements do not take their toll on the food as much when it is inside).

IMG_9488

IMG_7780

Above is a photo from January when the bread pudding was referred to as “Space Debris”.

IMG_9489

The Darth Maul eclair was replaced with a Red Velvet Brownie, a definite upgrade.

IMG_9490

IMG_9497

The Star Wars dessert parties have to be my favorite just for the presentation alone. The photo opportunities are great and are sure to be something cool to show friends and family when you get back home. On top of that,l almost everything is absolutely delicious.

IMG_9498

The new R2-D2 cupcake is my least favorite of the 3, although I’m not really sure it was more than a vanilla cupcake with a sugar covered icing. The BB-8 and Darth Vader cupcakes are still phenomenal, with the first being lemon flavored and the later chocolate & peanut butter.

IMG_9505

IMG_9508

IMG_9509

They also provided a number of toppings, including ice cream, for the bread pudding.

IMG_9516

The table settings were a nice upgrade and they would reflect the room you were dining in.

IMG_9515

Tables available up by the Cantina in Launch Bay.

IMG_9491

The drink menu saw the largest amount of changes, replacing all 6 specialty alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

IMG_9493

I started with the Galactic Punch.

IMG_9495

Josh started with the Light Speed Margarita.

IMG_9496

IMG_9500

The Cosmic Citrus Twist, pictured above.

IMG_9502

The Swamp Milk was my favorite of the new bunch, unique in look and flavor.

IMG_9511

Non-alcoholic options included Guava Juice and a Watermelon Lemonade.Soft drinks in cans, water, and coffee are also available.

IMG_9512

IMG_9513

I took some video around the dessert part in Launch Bay to give a better idea of the atmosphere inside:

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcCIe7gaqIg]

IMG_9518

The viewing area itself has not moved, but it is being set-up differently and has a much smaller footprint.

IMG_9459

A picture of it set-up earlier in the evening, seen above. The check-in process for the party begins at Launch Bay at 8:00PM. My suggestion would be to be there at 8PM and get the most for your money. You can have an hour and a half in that space, which is more than enough to enjoy everything there. Cast members walk the party attendees over around 9:15PM, but there is nothing to stop you from heading over a little earlier to ensure you have a good spot. Now, no one in the viewing area audibly complained that they couldn’t see, but I like to have a front row view, unobstructed, so we walked over to the area around 9:05PM and were situated right against the rope behind the new children’s section.

IMG_9519

When the tables were here for the old party, shorter tables to accommodate the wheelchair guests were provided up front. This section up front is now for children and could be used for those in wheelchairs as well.

IMG_9521

This was honestly the perfect view of the show as I have been unimpressed with the sight lines for it from nearly every other spot around the Center Stage area. Being up against the rope will give you plenty of space from anyone of adult height, and if you are traveling with kids you can have them right in front of you in the children’s section.

I took a video from the section to show just how good the view is. Also, the show has been polished up with some new effects over the last few weeks, si it may be worth another look:

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNhNGkWdtaU]

Overall, I think Disney has increased the value here. The decorations and venue are a vast improvement, the improvements that I think finally make this worth $69.00. It is by far the best view of the show available and if you are looking to appease any Star Wars fans in your group, this will do it. I don’t often feel these dessert parties are worth it, but this really is the only one I think delivers at its price point. Alcoholic drinks, endless desserts, good atmosphere, and the perfect viewing of the nighttime spectacular (along with a neat souvenir, albeit not exclusive to the event) come together for a very worthwhile package for the Star Wars fan.

CONFIRMED: PizzeRizzo Opens September in Muppets Courtyard at Hollywood Studios

We told you about it first a few months ago, but Disney made it official today:

CnbPJasUAAAWCvK

Pizza lovers, rejoice! PizzeRizzo will open this fall in Muppets Courtyard at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, in the former Toy Story Pizza Planet location. Rizzo The Rat owns and operates the pizzeria, where guests can grab a pizza pie and a cold drink. Enjoy a casual Italian-American dining experience in a whole new way, through the eyes of the lovable, wisecracking Muppet.

Walt Disney Imagineering hid hints of Rizzo, his extended family and friends who have visited PizzeRizzo over the years throughout the two-story quick-service location. In addition to the expansive indoor and outdoor seating area, guests will be able to dine in a “cheesy” banquet room, or take five in a special booth designated just for Rizzo’s celebrity friends.

PHOTOS, VIDEO: Aerial View as Demolition Rages On at Hollywood Studios for New Star Wars & Toy Story Lands

Demolition continues at Disney’s Hollywood Studios as the park prepares for the construction of the Toy Story and Star Wars themed lands that will be added in the next few years. Today, we take you high above the demolition yet again to see the latest progress on the project:

IMG_8635

The Premier Theater is gone, most of the Lights, Motors, Action! backdrop is history, and most of the land behind Toy Story Midway Mania is pretty clear. The entrance on Wodl Drive has lost a few lanes already, but no word yet on when they might actually close it.

IMG_8642

IMG_8640

Catastrophe Canyon was situated behind the LMA seating area, but as you can see there are little traces of it left.

IMG_8639

Since I know we will be asked, let me tell you that the lights you are seeing in the picture are reflecting from inside of the helicopter…

IMG_8637

Not much of the Streets of America has been touched at this point.

IMG_8636

There is still a bit of demolition to do, but it should wrap up before Summer’s end. We expect vertical construction of the two lands to start in the Fall.

IMG_8634

So, if you would like to see the progress with a little motion to it, we also have a video from the helicopter to share with you:

Thanks to our own Nick LoCicero for the photos and video!

CONFIRMED: The Muppets Are Getting Their Own Restaurant at Hollywood Studios – “Pizza Rizzo”

When Pizza Planet’s nearly year-long closure at Disney’s Hollywood Studios was announced, we speculated that the Muppets might be taking over the long-standing fast food pizza joint. Well, it’s officially happening now…

6c510-yolanda3

Opening in late-2016, guests can experience “Pizza Rizzo” in the Muppets Courtyard at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The restaurant will continue to operate as a counter service pizza restaurant, but guests will find an entirely new theme and better-quality food when it reopens this holiday season. The new name was confirmed by internal documents and permits filed in relation to the ongoing project.

IMG_5202

Pizza Rizzo, currently under construction

While the exact theme of the restaurant is unknown, it does make sense as Rizzo and his rat family are from New York (and work in food service) in the classic movie “The Muppets Take Manhattan”.

Stay tuned for more details on this breaking story as they become available.
