Innoventions West Closing, Are New Exhibits Coming or is Something Bigger on the Way?

Disney confirmed after a few days of speculation that all existing exhibits inside Innoventions West at Epcot will be closing. The expected closing date is April 30th.

While it isn’t rare for Innoventions exhibits to close and be replaced, the last time that the entire pavilion or a whole side of it was shut down was when it was converted from Communicore to Innoventions in 1994.

We are also led to believe this has been in the works for a long time now as replacements for the now long-closed Velcro, Segway, and Rockin’ Robots exhibits never materialized, even after years of vacancy in those space. Where’s the Fire, IBM Think, and the Great Piggybank Adventure will now follow suit.

“We’ve reached the end of our sponsorship agreements with the exhibitors in Innoventions West and will temporarily close the space in early May to begin preparing for a new experience.” – Disney spokeswoman earlier today, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Innoventions at Disneyland is closing permanently at the end of March 2015, so is Innoventions West at Epcot coming back, or is this the start of something else planned for the park? Now, it is possible they are just taking this opportunity to remodel the space before new tenants move in (the last time this happened was 1999), but it seems odd at a time when Disney is often hard-pressed to find sponsors for Epcot attractions. We will just have to wait and see…

Tomorrowland Movie Preview Coming to Epcot and Disneyland; Is Captain EO Closing for Good?

For a limited time, a sneak peek of “Tomorrowland” will be presented with special in-theater effects at the Imagination Pavilion theater at Epcot and the Tomorrowland Theater at Disneyland park, current and former homes to the Magic Eye Theater and the Captain EO attraction starring Michael Jackson. At Disneyland, you will also be able to discover an exhibit inspired by the movie, featuring production artwork and props used in the “Tomorrowland” film.

Captain EO closed at Disneyland last year and the now-renamed Tomorrowland Theater has hosted sneak peeks for Guardians of the Galaxy and Big Hero 6 since then, meanwhile Captain EO has never returned as promised. It will be interesting to see if it ever does and if the April closure of Captain EO at Epcot is the final curtain for the 1986 classic in Florida. Only time will tell…

The Disney Parks-exclusive “Tomorrowland” sneak peek begins in mid-April at Epcot and Disneyland park. “Tomorrowland” opens in theaters on May 22, 2015.

RUMOR: “Next-Gen Larger-Than-Life Mystery Attraction” Opening at Epcot in 2016?

Something BIG is coming to Epcot, and it will be here sooner than you think. Former Imagineer and now Disney consultant Jerry Rees recently updated his website bio to the following:

Jerry has Directed a record-setting 16 trans-media Disney Theme Park attractions in Anaheim, California; Orlando, Florida, Hong Kong and Paris, France. His projects span multiple formats, such as Showscan, Hi-Res Digital and in-theater illusions, and include the show “Cinemagique”which won a THEA Award for Best Attraction. His recent creation, “Animation Magic” which plays aboard Disney’s new cruise ships, won a THEA Award for “most innovative use of technology”. His 17th attraction is slated to open at EPCOT in 2016.

Meanwhile, on his resume…

“Mystery Attraction” / EPCOT -Next-gen larger-than-life interactive spectacle. Premiere planned for late 2015 or early 2016.

And then there’s these…

When I spoke to Jerry in late-2013 for a book project, he was actually just a few days away from leaving for Florida to work on the project. While he wouldn’t say too much about it, he claimed it was “very ambitious” and that he “couldn’t believe Disney is willing to invest in something like this”, leading us to believe the project is something the likes of which we have never seen before.

Nothing links this story to the Frozen attraction opening next spring (so you can rule that out and deem that this is a separate project), but there are two possible scenarios for what this attraction might be:

  1. With Innoventions West closing at the end of the month, this could be the replacement for that attraction space; or Innoventions West could become the new Festival Center so Disney could put a new attraction in the Wonders of Life pavilion building.
  2. Rees could be working on a brand new nighttime show for the park to replace IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth.

Based on Rees description of the attraction as a “Next-gen larger-than-life interactive spectacle”, this sounds more like a nighttime show than an attraction, but it really could still be an attraction as opposed to entertainment. We just don’t know enough at this time and there aren’t any very strong rumors out there for what Disney might be up to.

Regardless, it is nice to see that Epcot will not be forgotten in all of the expansions of the other three WDW theme parks, with now a Frozen ride, Frozen meet and greet pavilion, and this “larger-than-life” mystery attraction” on the way by next year. Now if Disney would only tell us what it is…

BREAKING: Disney Confirms Expansion of Soarin’ and Toy Story Midway Mania at Walt Disney World

Walt Disney World is expanding two of its most popular attraction in an effort to lower guest wait times.

As rumored, the Stage 1 building at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will be home to a third ride track for Toy Story Midway Mania. Disney has still not confirmed any rumors about a Toy Story Land for the park, but this may be the first step in the expansion.

Not only will Soarin’ at Epcot add a third theater, but the attraction will also complete the digital conversion currently being installed at Disneyland, possibly in preparation for a new version of the ride coming in the next few years.

Disney has stated both projects will be completed by late 2016.

EDITORIAL: Why Removing the Sorcerer’s Hat from Hollywood Studios is a Good Thing

Used with permission.

A fixture at Hollywood Studios since 2001. Used with permission.

The Sorcerer’s Hat is no more. For some this is a moment of triumph and restoration. For others it represents a seismic shift in Disney’s Hollywood Studios ethos and theme. My family and I are both excited about it as well as a little sad to see such an icon of so many Disney trips say goodbye. Regardless of your personal reaction, the decision to remove the hat allows Hollywood Studios to return to its original intent and design as well as to restore the park to its more purely “imagineered” vision.

By now most of us know the story. It was 1984. Michael Eisner and Frank Wells had just accepted roles as CEO and COO of Walt Disney Productions. Early in their leadership Walt Disney World added Captain EO, Mickey’s Toontown, the Norway Pavilion, and two new resorts. To generate interest beyond Walt Disney World’s only two parks at the time, Magic Kingdom and EPCOT, plans for what was then referred to as “The Third Gate” were in motion at WDW.

According to Jeff Kurtti’s Since the World Began, plans for a third park grew out of concepts for a new EPCOT pavilion. In addition to the Norway Pavilion, Disney leaders Eisner and Wells as well as the Imagineering community had been developing a “Movie Pavilion” that would tell the story of Hollywood with a unique Disney “bent.” Once they got into the concept, however, the decision was made to abandon notions of a new pavilion within EPCOT and instead expand the idea into a new park that became MGM Studios, which became Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2008.

The Sorcerer's Hat contributed to a very "unDisney-like" departure in thematic direction and purpose. Used with permission.

Thematically, this new park was created in the spirit of 1930’s and 1940’s Hollywood. This is significant because, if you’ve visited the real Hollywood, Walt Disney World’s iteration is nothing like Hollywood is now nor ever has been. Here is what Michael Eisner read from the dedication plaque on the park’s opening day:

The world you have entered was created by The Walt Disney Company and is dedicated to Hollywood—not a place on a map, but a state of mind that exists wherever people dream and wonder and imagine, a place where illusion and reality are fused by technological magic. We welcome you to a Hollywood that never was—and always will be.

The “state of mind” referenced on the plaque probably comes closest to capturing the essence of the park. I’ve heard Matt Hochberg, host of www.studioscentral.com, talk about the design of Hollywood Boulevard from the entrance to the original Studios centerpiece, Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, as a metaphorical journey from 1935 Hollywood to the present with Prime Time 50’s Cafe squarely in the middle. It’s a fascinating take on the park’s tight thematic design and Imagineering vision. And it makes sense. The net effect is this: Disney’s Hollywood Studios was created to be a representation of all Hollywood could have been, perhaps should have been, but actually has only existed in our  imagination. This vision naturally culminated in the full-scale replica of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, which premiered Disney’s Mary Poppins in 1964. So it is with good reason that Mickey’s Sorcerer Hat was not original to MGM Studios. It was added an an attraction during 2001’s 100 Years of Magic Celebration at Walt Disney World.

Over countless trips early in my Disney park experiences I never really gave the Sorcerer’s Hat much thought. It didn’t really fit aesthetically, but it wasn’t terribly dissonant in its theming. Because “Hollywood” in my mind always implied a sense of magic, at least to a degree, the Sorcerer’s Hat felt consistent enough. It wasn’t until we were at rope drop one morning with a long, straight-down-Hollywood-Boulevard, view that I realized just how intrusive Mickey’s Sorcerer Hat was to the park described on the dedication plaque.

You can see in the photo above, as the Hat disappears an ever better Hollywood has emerged. Even given the size of the Hat, the impact removing one visual element from an environment is surprisingly dramatic. Similar to the recently completed work on the Magic Kingdom hub, removing the Hat really opens the area up for guests.  Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, the only structure built to full-scale on Hollywood Boulevard, is also the perfect icon for the “Golden Era” Hollywood  the Imagineers have captured. It makes everything better from the Citizens of Hollywood characters to the sense of nostalgia, and we haven’t lost Mickey’s Sorcerer Hat completely, we’ll just have to make our way to Anaheim to see one now!

No Vinylmation Day at 2015 WDW Trading Event GenEARation D np

Each year in September, Walt Disney World holds a weekend long, ticketed trading and merchandise event at the Epcot World Showplace. For years, it was pins only. Then, in 2010, they added Vinylmation to the the event. The following year, Vinylmation took over Sunday and was turned into its own ticked day. There will be no such day at the 2015 event titled GenEARation D.

GenEARationD_logoAccording to an official post on Disney’s Merchandise Blog:

The GenEARation D event will focus primarily on Disney Pin Trading. While you are welcome to bring Vinylmation figures to trade with other Guests, we will not be offering Vinylmation trading activities or selling Vinylmation figures at the event.

This is a huge and disturbing shift in the hobby. While many will rush to judgement and put the nail in the Vinylmation coffin, I’m not sure that death is eminent. This is however, very disappointing. With the lack of free trade nights at the parks, this was the one time of year, a large group of collectors, could really look forward to getting together and trading face to face. I will also miss the Vinylmation Talk that provided previews and months of content to discuss among the community. Many will miss the merchandise. I will not miss the trading with Cast Members at this particular event. I have said all along, that Vinylmation trading does not work the same way as pins, and that trade format for Vinylmation is just not as effective… as shown in the disinterest in standing in the lines for many attendees.

So what does this mean? That is a question we will be pondering online and on the Destination Vinylmation podcast for weeks to come, I assure you that. In short, I think this solidifies vinyls shift from its attempt to be the next “Pins” to being a boutique like art/souvenir item at the parks. Please leave your comments here in this post and we will share them on the next podcast.

Pins have made some significant changes as well including vouchers designating your number of trades and guaranteed pins that used to randomly placed on the boards. Read the entire Disney announcement here.
