BREAKING: Cast Member Previews for Rivers of Light at Animal Kingdom Announced

While they didn’t quite make the November 18th date originally set over a month ago, Rivers of Light at Animal Kingdom will finally have its very first cast member previews next week.

"Rivers of Light,"the majestic nighttime jewel, coming to Disney's Animal Kingdom creates an illuminating musical experience for guests. Currently in development with a premiere date to be announced soon, "Rivers of Light" will celebrate the magic of animals, humans and the natural world with a blend of performers, floating lanterns and theatrical animal imagery. (David Roark, photographer)

Rivers of Light has been delayed since April 22nd, 2016.

The cast member previews (only for cast of Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park) will take place on the evenings of November 27th and 28th at 8pm. No photography or video recording will be allowed at the event.

With cast member previews happening soon, a formal debut for the long-delayed nighttime show is imminent.

Disney Announces New Restaurants and Pool Enhancements for Disney’s Wilderness Lodge

The Disney Vacation Club accommodations formerly known as The Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge have assumed a new name – Boulder Ridge Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, but this is just the beginning of the changes at the resort as the cabins outside of the main lodge are erected.

A sweeping re-imagination of the former Hidden Springs Pool is also underway. Depicted in the artist rendering below and scheduled to open in summer 2017, Boulder Ridge Cove will feature an expanded sun deck and zero-depth-entry pool in what appears to have been an abandoned rock quarry.

A nearby “Boulder Ridge Railway and Mining Co.” water tower will be among the pool area’s landmark reminders of its pioneering past, while a vintage mine cart supports the mining theme with an affectionate nod to Disney history.

Beyond the new pool space, scheduled enhancements to the resort are “chugging along” and include a brand-new bar & grill, in addition to a quick-service restaurant. Geyser Point Bar & Grill will be located in the heart of the feature pool area of Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, where guests can grab a bite to eat as they lounge by the resort’s main pool. The rendering for this area highlights ample outdoor seating and architecture that looks right at home with that of the existing Lodge, as well as Boulder Ridge Villas.

All-Star Resorts Are Selling Pizza at the Bus Stop

This is a weird one folks, but some of the All-Star Resorts will be selling pizza nightly at their bus stop areas.

Starting November 23rd, the locations will be open nightly from 7-10pm at Disney’s All-Star Music and Movies Resorts. The locations offer a very limited menu, mainly cheese and pepperoni pizza.

PHOTOS, VIDEO: Moana Meet and Greet Replaces a Portion of Walt Disney: One Man’s Dream

The mystery construction inside off Walt Disney: One Man’s Dream at Disney’s Hollywood Studios was finally completed yesterday when a Moana character meet and greet was unveiled, just in time for the new movie hitting theaters.

Wait times and hours for the meet and greet are posted outside of the exhibit

The meet and greet replaces a large portion of “The Legacy Continues” section of the exhibit which featured models of Cinderella Castle, Spaceship Earth, the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and other display pieces.

While it will utilize a pager system to let guests know when it is time to get in line, I needed up waiting about 30 minutes yesterday when the system was not in use.

The space is surprisingly well-themed, with a rocky grotto constructed, complete with a projection based waterfall. The rest of the experience is mostly wall-stickers and small plants, but it is cute enough for something temporary.

img_8194

There are no ropes separating guests in the switchbacks, just lines in the “sand”. I have too wonder if this will continue to work…

img_8204

Moana has a backdrop straight out of the film, flanked by tropical rocks and plants.

img_8210-2

Our interaction with Moana was pretty awesome, especially considering it was her first day meeting with guests. You can see that in our video below:

While I lament the loss of exhibit space, I understand the need to have this in the park and it has been a noticeable void since the Magic of Disney Animation closed last year. In fairness, it is in “The Legacy Continues section” of the attraction and the latest animated film is certainly continuing in the traditions of Walt Disney. I am curious if the rest of the exhibit will return when the expansion of the park is completed, but we will have to wait to find out.

REVIEW, PHOTOS, VIDEO: Watch Us Order and Eat the First Bus Stop Pizza at Walt Disney World

We broke the news on Wednesday evening that the All-Star Movies and Music Resorts at Walt Disney World were going to start selling pizza inside their respective bus loops, just outside of the hotels. Upon hearing this news, myself and Josh of EasyWDW.com decided we needed to go over to the resort and see exactly what was going on.

img_8325

As we pulled into the resort, we could see what appeared to be a green shed out in the bus loop area. We said that this surely couldn’t be it. But it was… it was…

img_8326

While advertised to be open from 7-10pm nightly starting this past Wednesday evening, when we arrived after 8pm, the old Food and Wine Festival booth was still shuttered.

img_8327

img_8328

A selection of bottled and canned beverages are available for your convenience.

img_8329

The menu is very short, but serves a good purpose for those returning from a day at the parks. If they are hungry, they can stop here and avoid the hustle and bustle of the interior food court.

I felt the need to document such an important moment in the history of the Walt Disney World Resort (once the booth finally did open), so here is video of Josh purchasing the first-ever “bus loop pizza” ever at Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort:

Pepperoni Pizza from Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort – World Premiere Express ($15.49)

Pepperoni Pizza from Disney's All-Star Movies Resort - World Premiere Express ($15.49)

Pepperoni Pizza from Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort – World Premiere Express ($15.49)

For $15.49, this really isn’t a terrible value. The pizza is of a very good size and can feed at least 4 people. Considering what people pay for an individual pizza at the park counter service restaurants, this is quite the bargain. To my surprise, it wasn’t too awful in taste either. It reminded me a lot of a Pizza Hut pizza, which is just fine when it comes to counter service pies.

While I know this comes at a time where we see Disney trying to squeeze every last penny out of the guests visiting, this one is actually a good idea and a nice service to the tired guests coming home from a full day of theme park fun. I wanted to hate this, I wanted to poke more fun at it, but I honestly can not. It wasn’t the best pizza in the world, and honestly, I’m not sure that’s what you are looking for at 9PM as you carry your kids off of the motor coach. If you’re hungry on the way home to the All-Star Resorts, this is a viable option for a quick dinner for you and your family.

REVIEW: American Holiday Table Opens in Epcot for Holidays Around the World

Holidays Around the World began today at Epcot, offering a number of marketplaces selling food and drink, very similar to the 37 other festivals that occupy Epcot throughout the year. OK, there isn’t 37 festivals, but the announcement of a new festival, the extension of the Food and Wine Festival in 2017, and these additions are starting to leave very little of the year without such offerings in the park.

American Holiday Table Menu at Epcot

American Holiday Table Menu at Epcot

We stopped by the American Holiday Table booth at the American Adventure first, and while we will review more of the booths from the event, the sheer size of the food is making it really hard to try quite as much at one time as we do for the Food & Wine and Flower & Garden Festivals.

Shipyard Eggnog White Porter Aged on Bourbon ($8.75)

img_8235

I enjoyed this strange seasonal beverage, but 16oz of a beer with eggnog flavoring is too much. 8oz of eggnog flavoring would have been quite enough, but especially with the flavor settling at the bottom, this became very hard to finish (but rest assured, I did finish it). If you enjoy beer and eggnog, this is at least worth a try, but maybe find someone to share it with.

Firenog ($9.50)

img_8230

The firenog was good, albeit a little small for $9.50. We would have liked a little more fireball whiskey in here, but maybe it just depends who pours you the drink.

Slow-Roasted Turkey ($11.25)

img_8238

If you think the meals are a little expensive at Holidays Around the World, let me refer you to the size of the plates… they are full size meals. They are not small plates like at the other Epcot Festivals, they are in-fact larger than many counter service meals around Walt Disney World. I’m not sure why this decision was made, but be prepared should you order one of these meals that you will probably not be eating again for a while.

img_8240

This was really, really good. The turkey was cooked very nicely, the stuffing patties above and below the turkey were quite tasty, and the mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce blended perfectly with it. The unadvertised stringbeans were a nice touch too, marking the only time I think I have ever enjoyed this side. Rather than blow an ungodly amount on similar food at the Liberty Tree Tavern at the Magic Kingdom, you should just come here and spend $11.25 on this more-than-filling meal.

Holiday Cookie

img_8244

The gingerbread cookies are apparently decorated in-house. Yes, it is all messed up and poorly decorated and no, we didn’t do that, that is how it came. Unless the kids really want one, you can probably do without this treat.

More Holiday Fun to Come

We will be visiting more of these booths over the next few days, but please allow us a little time to digest…

REVIEW: Rivers of Light Nighttime Show at Animal Kingdom Debuts; Show is Beautiful But Boring

Rivers of Light had its first Cast Member preview this evening at Disney’s Animal Kingdom…. seven months after its original premiere date of 4/22/2016. While we have been waiting a little over seven months, the team has been working hard on tweaking the show and making sure it lives up to the expert design level of Disney’s Animal Kingdom park and the upcoming AVATAR expansion.

This review will go into detail about the entire Rivers of Light show. If you wish to remain unspoiled and potentially excited, turn back now.

Tonight we were treated to a unique water pageant that’s a major upgrade to its 1971 predecessor that still travels on Seven Seas Lagoon. Rivers of Light begins quietly: Projections lighting the trees among Flame Tree Barbecue’s shore, laser projections of fireflies across the lagoon, shadows of animals going by every now and then. The lights dim and a stick of lanterns is guided down both sides of the stadium by themed dancers. Four small lotus floats gather in the water, alive with light and fireflies. The dancers are then greeted by the Shaman Storytellers midway, who ignite the celebration and make their way to their boats on either side of the viewing areas.

The boats make their way forward in the water, the Shaman and their sidekick cast animal shadows and start to tell their story on the sail of the boat, a very cool and unique projection effect. This is when the main four animal floats join the party: A turtle, an owl, a tiger, and an elephant. These animals dance with the lotus floats already in place, the lotus open up and start using their water jets in a very familiar dancing pattern. Fans of World of Color will recognize this technology, but that doesn’t change how cool this looks. The colors are changing and moving with the music. The gigantic water screens emerge, as previously seen in Jungle Book Alive with Magic, and we begin the journey on the Rivers of Light.

This entire first portion is gorgeous, beautiful, and masterfully done. Unfortunately it lasts over 10 minutes and drags on a bit. This is particularly bad because of the pacing of the next section.

At this point the main large lotus float joins the fun, sets itself right in the middle and opens up. The gigantic water screen starts showing Disney Nature animal footage and the small lotus floats join in with their own small water screens and projectors. Together, the entire river comes alive but it also becomes apparent that there’s one trick in this show and it can’t possibly last another 10 minutes.

The show abruptly continues to a tiger section, which is continued with images of primates kissing and a few CGI frogs, bears, and some rain. The Shaman boats float around the action currently happening, making low viewing not an option.

The floats join together to cast the animals to the stars, a form of constellation, and the main large lotus opens and propels the large metal ladder upward…which, according to concept art, should have fire. There was no fire the entire show. The ladder raises, the water pulses, the music climaxes and lights go out. Lights return for applause and the boats scurry off to their home.

And that’s it. There’s a lot of problems with the show, but let’s talk about the positives.

Positives

It’s technically an amazing show. We’ve never seen something quite like this, and it wows for the first part of the show. The LEDs across the floats are expertly timed and wonderful to gaze at. There’s certain points where too much is going on to fully accept what is happening. Multiple laser effects are great to view, as are the spotlights across the lagoon. Disney brought out their best with the production of the performance, and it really shows.

Negatives

There’s no wow moment. The technology is wonderful, but it really doesn’t ever create that “goosebumps” moment that Disneyland Forever or Fantasmic or Wishes has, it doesn’t have the heart needed for a Disney park. There’s also nothing relatable to the audience, so much that the theater Cast know they need to do something to hold attention and start clapping with the music to get guests engaged, multiple times. There is no closing moment to the show, very similar to how Jungle Book: Alive with Magic ended…. people just didn’t know how or when to react.

Overall

Overall, this is NOT a nightcap to your day at Animal Kingdom. We’re still not 100% sure on calling it a nighttime spectacular, but it’s definitely something… just not sure if that something warranted a seven month delay. We went in with low expectations and were blown away by the technology used, but were left wanting more by the finale.

With that being said, the show started with a hiccup requiring a show restart right about when the gigantic water screens started (We’ve since been told that was due to a near float collision). Once it started again, the show went through perfectly without any issues. We were also told this is a Show/Experience/Creative rehearsal and we would be asked for feedback at the end of the show while walking out, which did not happen. What we witnessed may not be the final Rivers of Light show, and we are anxiously hoping this was not the final show. This belongs at Sea World as of right now, not at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

PHOTOS, VIDEO: Aerial View of Construction at Hollywood Studios, Latest Progress on Toy Story & Star Wars Lands

We once again take to the skies to give you the best view possible of the ongoing expansion of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Things are actually starting to get exciting over on the Toy Story Land area as structures are beginning to rise, meanwhile, Star Wars Land remains mostly a dirt pile. (Click images for larger res if you are into that kind of thing)

This side of the park is a disaster currently, and guests can really see this if they come in through the World Drive entrance to the park. A new car entrance and a parking lot expansion rounds out the construction you can see beyond the current borders of Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Here you can see guest vehicles entering what’s left of that entrance, while just behind the fence, land clearing continues.

Disney recently released the above concept art for the Star Wars land at Hollywood Studios, which matches the shape of the site above pretty well if you turn it around (as our photos are looking from what will be the backside).

njl_1584

njl_1553

We now focus our view over towards the Toy Story Land area.

njl_1558

That square is the extent of Toy Story Land, minus the eventual new entrance that will cross into the Toy Story Midway Mania attraction just across that road.

njl_1572

You can already make out the main thoroughfare of Toy Story Land, although it is just a dirt path winding down the center of the above photo.

njl_1573

This big concrete box is most definitely part of the Slinky Dog Dash attraction, as it can bee seen behind the buildings of the load station in the concept art for Toy Story Land (included below). The attraction features a launch of a moderate speed and this box will likely hold the mechanics that can make that launch happen. The foundations for the Alien Swirling Saucers ride system are in place below that site. It seems this land is racing ahead, possibly not as far off as we once imagined.

img_2668-1-1200x900

It’s nice to finally start to see things that are recognizable after so many months of prep work. You can almost envision what this area will look like now if you compare it to the concept art.

We also have a video flyover of the site to share with you:

Of course, we will continue to keep you in the loop as work progresses on all facets of the massive expansion of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Stay tuned for more!
