BREAKING: New Concept Art & Details Released for the Disney Skyliner Gondola System & Park Stations at Walt Disney World

Earlier this year, Disney finally announced the Disney Skyliner transportation system that will give resort guests an unforgettable journey and a picturesque view of Walt Disney World Resort as they take to the sky to travel from select Disney resorts to Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

 width=

Today, Disney is sharing new details on what you can expect from the Disney Skyliner system.

Select Disney Skyliner cabins will have iconic Disney characters incorporated into their exterior design to give the appearance that a Disney pal is riding along with guests, such as characters from the ‘Fab Five,’ figures from Disney attractions, fan favorites from movies, and more.

 width=

The design of the Disney Skyliner station at International Gateway at Epcot will be inspired by the park’s nearby European Pavilions, and will be covered with metal and glass canopies, hand-painted murals and ornamental steel structures that harken back to the early 18th century Art Nouveau style. Guests traveling to Epcot via the Disney Skyliner will be welcomed to the park with a rare birds-eye view of World Showcase.

 width=

The Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort station will be the hub of activity for Disney Skyliner. This station is inspired by the open air village marketplaces of the Caribbean and will showcase the nearby resort’s architectural detailing and color schemes. At this station, passengers will be able to transfer gondola routes to reach their destination, or are invited to sit and admire the waterfront resort setting.

 width=

The design style of the station at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will fit with that of the park’s main entrance and bus stations. Passengers traveling here from the Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort station can expect a new aerial perspective of the park’s iconic attractions, like The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.

Disney’s Pop Century Resort and Disney’s Art of Animation Resort will share a Disney Skyliner station that feels whimsical and contextual with both resorts. Upon departing the gondola station, Skyliner passengers will ascend over Hourglass Lake and enjoy a panoramic view of these two colorful resorts.

Finally, cabins will slow down at the Disney Skyliner turn-station along Buena Vista Drive, where guests can see the mechanical and aerial components that make up the Disney Skyliner.

No opening date has been set for the Disney Skyliner as of yet.

REVIEW: Cinnamon Cream Cheese Mousse Dessert from Satuli Canteen, Flame Tree Barbecue, & Pizzafari at Animal Kingdom

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is now offering a special cinnamon cream cheese mousse at a few counter service restaurants, just for the holiday season. This bright red dessert is coated in a red glaze, has chocolate cream cookie crumbles and apple-compote at its base and is topped with a green meringue kiss. You’ll find this mousse at Satu’li Canteen, Flame Tree Barbecue and Pizzafari.

It makes for a pretty picture.

Merry Christmas from Pandora, where I guess it’s always a blue Christmas…

 width=

So, how is it? It tastes like Christmas (kids, don’t try to eat decorations at home). There’s a subtle sweetness brought on from the glaze, which ends with a subdued cinnamon flavor that doesn’t linger, but is prominent enough to be the focal point of the dessert. Mixing the cookie and apple with each bite yields a fantastic mix, perfect for the holidays. Personally, we still enjoy the regular offering from Satuli more, but this is a nice diversion for the season (and better than any other dessert you’ll have at Flame Tree or Pizzafari).

BREAKING: Permits Filed and Building Placement Revealed for Tron Coaster and Main Street Theater

It’s been a busy week in the world of permitting for Walt Disney World construction projects. Today the permits for both the TRON Lightcycle Power Run coaster in Tomorrowland and the new Main Street Theater in the Magic Kingdom were filed. width=

Because both of these projects are actually in Tomorrowland, they have been combined into one permit. The new Main Street Theater will be located behind the former Galaxy Palace Theater in Tomorrowland, but it will be accessible from Main Street U.S.A.

The permits show the placement and size of the TRON Lightcycle Power Run show building (labeled “MK2”), almost due north of Space Mountain. The building will occupy a huge footprint, even larger than Space Mountain. It will be very visible (as Space Mountain is now) from the Top of the World Lounge at Bay Lake Tower and the California Grill at the Contemporary Resort.

 width=

The Main Street Theater (labeled “MK1”) will occupy most of what is now a parking lot southwest of the Carousel of Progress and behind the now-shuttered Galaxy Palace Theater.

Minnie Van Transportation Expanded to Disney’s Old Key West Resort

While initially only available to guests staying at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club and Boardwalk Resorts, Minnie Vans have since rolled out to the Wilderness & Animal Kingdom Lodge hotels, as well as the Grand Floridian, Polynesian Village, and Contemporary Resorts due to popular demand.

 width=

Starting today, guests at Disney’s Old Key West can now go to the front desk at the resort to activate the point-to-point transportation service for their use.

Minnie Vans is a paid transportation service that is operated by Disney and summoned through the Lyft app. Please check out our review to see how it works and if Minnie Vans will be right for you.

Experience Over Stuff: Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique and Pirate’s League

By Jody Everson, Small World Big Fun Disney Authorized Travel Agent

If you are a parent like me, you feel overrun at home with toys, game pieces, stuffed animals, and so many little tiny objects that hurt so badly when stepped on! When I thought about our Disney World vacation, I had one concern: all the souvenirs that the kids would HAVE to have. Now I’m not saying I’m a “no fun” mom; I’m just saying I don’t want to come back from Disney World with lots of [possibly expensive] items that will just end up in a big toy bin to never be played with again.

But I’m SUPER into giving the children experiences. Now, before I get too far, let me just say, we still come back from Walt Disney World with the necessities: mouse ears, shirts, and the newest Pirates of the Caribbean sword (because to my young son, that is actually a necessary collectable and not a toy). But if I can AT ALL help it, I’d love to provide them with fun, unique, memorable experiences instead of buying the random stuffed animal “because I neeeeeeeed it.” This “experience over stuff” plan seems to work for us.

Stuff Gets Lost, Memories Last Forever

Two ways that we did this for our daughter was to treat her to both the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique and The Pirates League. Throughout the vacation, it really helped that we could keep reminding her about her special experiences/makeovers/transformations every time she asked for a “thing.” I scheduled these special treats at the beginning of our last two vacations, and she knew about them ahead of time. We really talked about how special these experiences were and how lucky she was to get a reservation (That’s the truth, too. I’ll talk about how your SWBF agent can help with that!) Our daughter was almost five on these vacations, and these talks really resonated with her.

 width=

We started her first Disney World trip at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at Disney Springs the first day that we arrived. (There is also another Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique location in Cinderella’s Castle in Magic Kingdom, but Disney Springs worked perfectly for us for this itinerary.) There are several packages at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, and we chose the basic one and brought our own princess dress. I can barely put into words how magical and special this experience was. She was treated like pure royalty and sat there in awe (and pure relaxation!) and they pulled her head of ringlets into a tight, perfectly coiffed, princess bun.

My daughter was thrilled with the experience and declared immediately that she would not brush her hair all week. I actually had thought ahead about this – how in the world would her princess updo keep all week? – so I ordered $8.00 satin pillowcases from Amazon to be delivered to our Disney resort earlier that day. I even included this note:

“Dear ____,
Welcome to Disney World! I heard that you were having a royal princess appointment! I thought you might like this satin pillowcase to keep your hair all fixed up. Sweet dreams! See you at my castle soon!

Love, Cinderella”

Genius, right? I was so proud of this idea. And you might be thinking: that’s one more thing I had to bring home. Well, yes, technically it was another thing, but it’s useful and she sleeps on those pillowcases every single night still! And she still thinks those came directly from Cinderella herself.  SUCCESS! (And it actually did keep her hair intact all week!)

 width=

At The Pirates League, we entered a dark, cavernous, amazingly themed lair to meet Pirate Bob. I know what you are thinking, “No way can Pirate Bob do a mermaid makeover,” but he was fantastic! He was so funny, completely in character and painted mermaid scales and blue fingernails like the best Fairy Godmother-in-Training you could find! He even told us that they plunder the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at night to get their makeup. And by the way, both the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique and The Pirates League cater to the young gentlemen too.

 width=

Now the hilarious thing about both of these experiences is, you guessed it, she still came home with stuff! But this was really meaningful and useful stuff. After both makeovers, they give you your nail polish, makeup palette, and hair clip or tiara. At The Pirates League, the young mermaid or pirate is invited into a pirate treasure room and can choose another gift (it was a necklace for her)! So, I guess the joke was on me after all. But she still uses/wears those items and reminisces back to her days of princess and mermaid pampering at Walt Disney World! It was all completely worth it.

Book with WDWNT’s Exclusive Travel Partner Small World Big Fun, and we’ll be happy to try to  nag reservations for you at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique or The Pirates League! Reservations do fill up, so it would be great to help you plan this before the 180-day reservation mark. I know your little ones will have a magical time, and maybe just maybe, you won’t have to take home as much stuff either!

Disney World Testing Annual Pass & Other Discounts Through MagicBands

Some table service restaurants at Walt Disney World are testing the ability to scan a guest’s MagicBand to apply Annual Pass discounts.

 width=

If a guest is paying via MagicBand, they won’t  have to do anything extra to get the discount as it should automatically be applied during the payment process.

Sadly, this new feature requires MagicBand payment to work, so otherwise guests will have to show their pass for the discount.

Right now, the discount application is only working for annual pass. There is no word if Disney Vacation Club or other discounts will eventually  work the same way as well.

REVIEW: Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen at The Magic Kingdom Radically Alters Menu Once Again

Just yesterday, the Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen in Adventureland at the Magic Kingdom went through yet another major menu adjustment. This comes after two menu changes last year, with the last significant changes coming in December of 2016. You can check out all of our Skipper Canteen reviews below:

Here’s what the new menu for November 2017 looks like…

 width=

New in the appetizers is the Jungle Green Salad, replacing the Chicken Soup. Otherwise, the appetizer menu remains the same (thankfully).

 width=

Under entrees, the Head-On Shrimp, Noodle Bowl, and Skip’s Beefy Mac and Cheese all met their demise, replaced by the Perkins Thai Noodles and Sankuru Sadie’s Seafood Stew. Modifications were made to the “A Lot at Steak Salad”, Dr. Falls Signature Grilled Steak, and the Baa Baa Berber Lamb Chops. It is also worth noting that the Whole Fried Fish is now a Yellow Tail Snapper, since the Lion Fish was apparently not coming in on a consistent basis (personally, I think the Yellow Tail has more flavor anyway). The sustainable fish is a Red Tail Snapper, which is quite good as well.

 width=

Here we find the drink menu.

As far as themed-restaurants and wonderful spaces to dine in, Skipper Canteen is at the top of my list at Walt Disney World. It exudes tons of story, tying together Disney Park mythology from the Jungle Cruise, to the Adventurer’s Club, to Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar, to the Society of Explorers and Adventurers (S.E.A.), and more. The interior is jaw-dropping in many places and a pleasure to dine in, no matter how the menu may change.

The servers are also a HUGE part of the story and most we have had in our many journeys to the Jungle have been exceptional. Many cast members go above and beyond to make Skipper canteen the best restaurant at the Magic Kingdom.

A side note, the complimentary bread was removed from Skipper Canteen a few months ago sadly. While this is a definite loss for me, many guests found it strange and enjoyable. Regardless, most portions here are quite large, so you likely won’t go hungry without it.

So, let’s not waste another moment, let’s explore the new items that guests will find on their expeditions!

Jungle Green Salad ($9.00)

 width=

From the depths of the Jungle…Skipper Bill’s Hearty Mixed Greens, Seasonal Squash, Green Apples, Preserved Lemons, and Spiced Walnuts tossed with an Apple Cider Vinaigrette

The new appetizer salad is okay, with nothing really special about it, and is very small for $9. Spend just over twice the amount and get the steak salad as an entree, or get the Shiriki Noodle Salad which is also an appetizer.

Dr. Falls’ Signature Grilled Steak ($35.00)

 width=

Marinated New York Strip, Pico de Gallo Butter, Jasmine Rice, and Braised Black Beans with Applewood-smoked Bacon

The steak changed sides and the butter on top, giving it a more Latin flare. This is a welcome change as we found the pico de gallo butter on top already melted when the food arrived, but it added a nice fresh flavor to the charred steak. Sadly, the steak was fatty and a bit rubbery, so under no circumstance can I recommend this. Also, what are you doing ordering a steak in the Magic Kingdom? The beans and tomatoes are a big change from the past side dish, but they work well with the new butter.

Perkins Thai Noodles ($22.00)

 width=

Chicken, Tofu, Seasonal Vegetables, and Rice Noodles tossed in a Spicy Soy-Chili-Garlic Sauce. A favorite of our friend Pamelia Perkins, President of the Adventurers Club

While i lament the loss of the noodle bowl, this turned out fantastic. The noodles were a great portion for the price, very filling. The menu and server asked if we were okay with spice, and the spice was present but not overbearing, which was a nice change to the typical Magic Kingdom digs. That being said, he noted that they could make it spicier upon request. The dish has a lot chicken mixed in with the noodles made for a great unique dish, which feels almost like the new Kona Cafe noodle dishes (which is a good thing).

Sankuru Sadie’s Seafood Stew ($27.00)

 width=

Shrimp, Sustainable Fish, Mussels, and Octopus simmered in a fragrant Coconut Sauce. Served with Jasmine Rice

Again, the Head-On Shrimp was a favorite of mine, but this replacement is likely just as enjoyable. The coconut seafood stew came out as a heaping plate of random seafood. The octopus was cut in different tentacle sections and cooked to a tenderness that was just not found at Food & Wine Festival Greece booth.

 width=

The head-on shrimp live on in the dish, accompanied by bunch of muscles and chunks of sustainable fish above a generous portion of jasmine rice. The coconut broth created a porridge-like consistency towards the end, soaking in all the flavors of the mix of seafood. Overall a very solid dish that continues the adventurous theme of Skipper Canteen and plays well to the palate. I will be ordering this again.

“A Lot at Steak” Salad ($19.00)

 width=

We’re betting it all on this one! Grilled Steak, Romaine Lettuce, Spring Mix, Pickled Jalapeños, Red Onion, Queso Fresco, and Pumpkin Seeds tossed with Chimichurri Vinaigrette

The reimagined steak salad comes out in a seemingly endless bowl full of fresh greens, cheese, and a large portion of meat. Easily the biggest entree salad we’ve seen at Walt Disney world, outside of the Via Napoli group salad and buffets at least. It’s big, it’s fresh, and you can split this with an order of Sea Shu Mai to make for a quick refreshing lunch with a partner. It’s worth noting that the steak with this dish was much more tender, flavorful, and free of fat which may have been cut away in the preparation.

OVERALL

In review, I think these changes are fine and do little to hurt the restaurant. The steak is kind of a “safety dish”, so we don’t lament that being bad, and the other entree changes are at the very least a lateral move. While personally I will miss the noodle bowl and the head-on shrimp, and I know many who will miss the beefy mac and cheese, I believe the quality is being upheld at Skipper Canteen and it remains the finest table service restaurant at Magic Kingdom.
