Cancer Gets LOST Charity Auction

Our friend and custom Vinylmation artist Annemarie alerted us to a wonderful online charity auction called Cancer Gets Lost that will take place from August 15-29.

By the logo, you can probably tell this a Lost TV show themed auction. There are many great items available that include set props, scripts, autographed items and custom artwork. Annemarie is donating a custom Vinylmation to the cause.

Her design brilliantly brings together many of the mysterious items of the Lost island. The ears feature a very cartoonish Locke and Jack standing over the hatch. I really love the drawing style she used for them.

On the head we see the numbers… green against a black background as if they were typed onto a computer screen. We can also see Jacob’s scale. The body of the vinyl largely represents the beach with the jungle in the background. On the right foot is the plane wreckage while the left is the foot of the giant statue. Of course you see the black smoke wrapping around the entire figure.

The back has the Donkey Wheel, Locke’s letter to Jack and the hatch countdown clock. The note looks just perfectly situated. The Blast Door Map takes up the entire back of the head and is drawn with exquisite detail.

For Lost fans, this custom is a real delight. It delivers a ton of fun little treats all around the canvas. The starting bid is set at $88. Of course, this is not Annemarie’s first Lost custom. Remember Locke and Hurley?

We are of course focusing on Annemarie’s Vinylmation here, but there is a ton of great artwork up for auction. Here are a few of my favorites.

Autographed LOST Print: Jason Munn “4-Toed Statue” #13/300 (signed by Damon Lindelof)
Opening Bid: $23.00

Autographed LOST Print: Eric Tan “The Crash” #16/300 (signed by Damon Lindelof)
Opening Bid: $23.00

Autographed LOST Mini Print: “Han Sawyer vs. Radzinsky” (signed by Damon Lindelof)
Opening Bid: $8.00

There are actually bunch of Lost/Star Wars mash ups including movie posters. And as I mentioned, a few collectibles as well.

Authentic Autographed LOST Script: “The Constant” (Signed by Damon L & Carlton C)
Opening Bid: $42.00

Authentic LOST Screen-used Short Wood Table from Survivors’ Beach Camp
Opening Bid: $88.00

Cancer Gets LOST is a non-profit charity webcast, auction and party to benefit the National Brain Tumor Society.

Co-creators Jared (@agentbacardi) and Jo (@jopinionated) are producing and hosting a live webcast in Los Angeles on August 25 with LOST alum (cast and creative), coinciding with an online auction of LOST and TV/film memorabilia, props and autographed items (open from 8/15 – 8/29).

100% of all proceeds from all of the above will go directly to the NBTS, a charity selected in honor of Jo’s dear friend Jackie O, who passed away on 8/3/12 after fighting brain tumors and cancer with great spirit for four years.

Collector’s Corner: Annemarie

Name: Annemarie Brown

Hometown: Southern California

Collection size:
3 inch = 160
9 inch = 10
Jr. = 9
Park Starz =14
Customs = 27

How long have you been collecting?
Since May 2011.

What is your favorite figure that you own?
That’s hard. I have to pick more than one. USC Trojans. Peter and the Wolf (My personal custom). All the Park Starz. Villains 2 Shere Khan variant. Park 5 Abominable Snowman. And I know this isn’t fair, but the entire Alice in Wonderland series rules.

Which of these is the best feeling: Pulling a figure you want… from a blind box you just purchased, from a great trade with another collector, from a mystery trading box at the park or from a clear trading box?
Gotta go with blind box. I haven’t had the most awesome luck with trading, but blind-boxing the John Henry variant, a pink elephant variant, and the Mother Gothel chaser were probably the best feelings ever.

Also, this isn’t Vinylmation related, but I think I have to show you guys my Roger Rabbit room.

…and that’s just one corner.

Spotlight On: Custom Vinylmation Artist Annemarie

Annemarie just sent us pictures of her latest custom. It is designed after the boy from La Luna, the new Pixar short that plays before Brave.

Destination Vinylmation: What was it about this character that made you run home after watching La Luna and create him in Vinylmation form?
Annemarie: I may have a sickness, because the first thing I thought when I saw the character was that he’d fit perfectly on a Vinylmation.

DV: Was this design fairly straightforward or did you got through some different options in your head?
AM: He was pretty straightforward. I knew I wanted to capture his expression in the moment where he saw the moon up close. I originally planned to use a Director Mickey hat for his hat, but it didn’t look quite right and would have needed a brim anyway, so I decided to sculpt him his own special hat.

DV: What did you personally take away from this Pixar short?
AM: This short, as all Pixar shorts are, was beautiful. I loved its simplicity.

DV: What is your favorite Pixar short of all-time?
AM: I’ve always loved Geri’s Game the best. Not sure why, I just think the expressions are priceless.

Spotlight On: Custom Vinylmation Artist Annemarie

Annemarie is back with some all new custom pieces.

Destination Vinylmation: Both of these new customs look amazing. What do you enjoy more, replicating a Disney character more closely like Mad Hatter or developing your own design like the Scarface and why?

Annemarie: That’s a difficult question to answer; I really enjoy doing Disney characters because in my mind they represent Vinylmation, but it’s really fun to have to start from scratch and figure out how I’m going to approach something totally unique. With Scarface, I tried to do something similar to Villains 2, for example, where you’re focusing more on the face than on the body. I thought he’d look more “serious” this way, as opposed to giving him a squat body and arms. The Mad Hatter was a lot of fun because I had so much color and detail to draw from. I actually had to simplify him a bit to give him a cleaner design.

DV: These customs are for OCVinylDon. Tell us about the trading community he has set up.

AM: VinylmationTraders.com is an online community where folks can post what they have for trade/ what they’d like to trade, and hopefully find someone who can meet their needs and in turn help out! It’s been a great experience for me, every one’s been honest and fair and there’s a place where you can leave good feedback, much like eBay. Don has been the moderator over there, and he does a great job. I’m happy to have added to his collection of customs.

DS Jiminy Cricket Review

I was lucky enough to get my hands on one of these guys a week early, thanks to (probably) some miscommunication between my local Disney Store and the powers that be. But here he is, the Make-a-Wish Jiminy Cricket! (*editor’s note: the official release date for this figure is April 29th)

I love the graphic design of the suit. The button isn’t three-dimensional as some guessed, just painted on, but it looks great. The face has great detail, I love the shading, but looking at the figure up close and I’m thinking his head is a bit too cocked to the side. It kinda looks like his neck is broken. When I compare this figure to the A2 combo topper Jiminy, I think I prefer the straightforward graphic style of the latter. If I give him the MAW Jiminy’s umbrella, he’s practically perfect!

Unfortunately, again, this figure suffers a bit from quality control issues. Not nearly the state of Furry Friends, but still, because he’s mostly white a lot of dirtiness/ imperfections really stand out. Notice the dirt on his hat and feet. It’s hard to tell when looking at him in the store in his box, but be mindful of this.

All in all, he’s a cute figure and $1 of each purchase goes to the Wake-A-Wish foundation, so that’s cool. He retails for $9.95 also, which is a great price considering he has two accessories AND when you take into account the donation.

Autism Awareness Vinylmation Auction

by Annemarie

For the month of April, there’s been a great auction going on over at the Vinylmation Exchange Facebook page. Several artists have donated customs for the cause, Light it Up Blue for World Autism Awareness Month. Cheryl Kramp is running the auction, and it goes until the end of this week, ending April 29th. I was honored to design and donate a custom for the auction, Merida from Pixar’s upcoming “Brave.”

There are several other customs up for auction by various artists, and even some Disney produced harder-to-get vinyls as well.

Baby Stitch by Aaralyn
Sorcerer Mickey by Chris Porter
Spongebob by Laura Morrey

So be sure to check out the Facebook group, scroll down to see the pieces up for auction, and join the group to bid!
