PHOTOS: Christmas 2016 Merchandise Featuring Obscure & Rare Disney Characters Hits Shelves at Disney Parks

While visiting Disney Springs over the weekend, I couldn’t help but notice that it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

img_4642

It’s almost Halloween, but it’s now full speed towards the Christmas holiday season at the Walt Disney World Resort. Apparently, an entire, HUGE Christmas store in Disney’s Days of Christmas just isn’t enough for Disney Springs, so holiday merchandise has now taken over what was the Wonderful World of Memories shop (located between Hanes Design-A-Tee and The Art of Disney). This is located literally right across the path from Days of Christmas as well.

Now, we already previewed all off the great new ornaments for 2016 in our last Disney Springs photo report, including the Pluto reindeer ear hat seen above, so go check that out if you haven’t.

The continued growth in the popularity of some of the older films in the Disney library is showcased this year, with Bambi taking center stage with an entire ceramic kitchen collection.

Even friend Owl is in on the fun. He is $16.99.

The Thumper gravy boat is $26.99.

Bambi and Flower retail at $19.99 each.

Some of the animal characters from Sleeping Beauty can be found on the back.

Remember those plush characters on the tree in some of the merchandise? Well, Disney made those plush as ornaments you can buy. They feel a bit pricey at $16.99 each, but it is a rather fun assembly of characters, including Meeko from Pocahontas above.

The rather cute collection includes Chip, Dale, Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, Rabbit, Piglet, Owl, Flower, Thumper, Bambi, Meeko, Robin Hood, Olaf, Sven, and the three bear brothers from Brave.

So, what do you think? Will you be buying any of the 2016 holiday merchandise at the parks?

PHOTO: Disney Parks Moving Back to Resort Specific Cups

While it may not seem like a big deal to the average guest, many of us who love the subtle details and differences between the Disney Parks always loved that Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort used to sport different cups and plates at their fast food establishments from coast to coast. For the last few years, the two have shared “Disney Parks” branded cups and plates/bowls at all of their counter service dining locations. Well, then this showed up at the Disneyland Resort today…

If this cup is any indication, we may soon see resort specific cups, plates, and more once again. Only time will tell. Oh, and hopefully they will take Tower of Terror off of the cups in California…

REVIEWS: “Between-Disney-Vacation” Recommended Reading 101

It’s February. Even though we’re within a few weeks of Daylight Savings — the unofficial gateway to spring — most of the nation still finds itself in the throes of winter for at least a few more weeks. Of course this also means, for most of us, that although we’re getting closer to our next Disney vacation every day there’s still some winter to endure. If you’re like me, life tends to be what happens between visits to the Disney parks. As a way to cope with such a reality I’ve managed to find a few practices — we’ll call this “prep” — that help me deal with the time between trips. Music, podcasts, and of course books are all tools in my Between-Disney-Trips survival kit. So it’s in this spirit that I submit my favorite or most recent “February Survival Reads:”

Dream ItDream It! Do It! My Half-Century Creating Disney’s Magic Kingdoms, Marty Sklar
Different from other books I’ve read on the subject of Disney backstory and mythology, Dream It! Do It! by Marty Sklar will be most enjoyed by those most familiar and intrigued by the stories perpetuated by and grounded in Disney lore. Sklar is a career Imagineer that has contributed to every major event in the development of each of the Disney parks. Additionally, he may be the only single person with both a working and personal relationship with anybody that’s anybody associated with the Disney parks story — including the man himself, Walt Disney. This includes the Sherman brothers, John Hench, Mary Blair, Card Walker, Dick Nunis, Joe Fowler, Joe Potter, Claude Coats, and Roy O. Disney. And that is by no means a complete list. If you’re looking for an insider’s perspective and little-known albeit interesting pieces of information associated with Walt Disney World, Disneyland, and even Disneyland Paris and Tokyo, this is your book. What I enjoyed most were the stories about the creation of the engineering and imaginative feat that became Walt Disney World. What I enjoyed least were the inner workings of the corporation itself.

Screen Shot 2015-02-22 at 2.19.46 PMWalt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination, Neal Gabler
It’s worth reading just for the behind-the-scenes story on the production of Snow White alone. But the author also takes a deep dive into the early studio years that makes the Walt Disney story that much more accessible to fans and park visitors. There’s some decent stuff on Sleeping Beauty but I found myself wanting more about the genesis and production of Cinderella. For me, this biography has probably been the most comprehensive—even through those painful war years and nature documentaries. Gabler cites pop culture writers of the day and movie reviewers where it is appropriate. Readers Beware: this is quite the commitment. But for hardcore fans, I think it’s also a rite of passage of sorts.

Screen Shot 2015-02-22 at 2.22.22 PMThe Haunted Mansion: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies, Jason Surrell
Even though The Haunted Mansion is one of my favorite attractions, I never could put my finger on why so many Disney enthusiasts were so obsessed with it. My hope was that reading Surrell’s book would help me understand the Haunted Mansion phenomenon and it absolutely has. He begins with the genesis of the idea in the Museum of the Weird for which Yale Gracey and Rolly Crump were commissioned to begin exploring and experimenting with gags for the mansion. Surrell then walks his readers through the whole creative process. Along the way you meet X. Atencio, Marc Davis, Claude Coats, and plenty of others that had a hand in bringing the attraction to life, er, afterlife. The last third of the book addresses each “scene” in the Mansion in detail—but not so much detail as to be overwhelming. It’s an easy read and highly recommended for Disney fans at practically any interest level.

Screen Shot 2015-02-22 at 2.24.33 PMThe Animated Man: A Life of Walt Disney, Michael Barrier
Oddly enough, this has been my favorite Walt Disney biography. Given Barrier’s obvious bent toward the history of animation and Disney’s place in it, I didn’t have the highest expectations. I am generally more interested in Walt’s life than in the medium itself. But the fact is that Michael Barrier made me care. He made Walt’s life through the lens of historical animation even more interesting. I’m not sure I would make this my first biographical endeavor into the life of one of the most influential people of the Twentieth Century. But I would recommend it as the second.

Screen Shot 2015-02-22 at 2.26.15 PMThe Unauthorized Story of Walt Disney’s Haunted Mansion, Jeff Baham
This book is everything you would expect from the founder of Doombuggies.com. Jeff is exhaustive in his research and relentless in his pursuit of the most accurate and most thorough Haunted Mansion apologetic. Different from Surrell who takes an Imagineer’s perspective, Baham writes for the person who just can’t get enough of the Haunted Mansion. A couple of reviewers didn’t like the second section of The Unauthorized Story of Walt Disney’s Haunted Mansion and the way it takes readers step-by-step through the Mansion, but that was probably my favorite part. But that is not to say that I didn’t also love all the history and background present in the first half as Coats, Crump, Davis, and Gracey dominate the narrative as they rightfully should. The bottom-line: this is just a really cool book.

Screen Shot 2015-02-22 at 2.29.40 PMWalt Disney: An American Original, Bob Thomas
Promoted as the only “authorized” biography by the Disney family, what Thomas does get right is that he doesn’t waste a lot of time on the parts of Walt’s story that might have the potential to drag. Instead, the author gives most of the big story lines equal billing: Oswald, “Steamboat Willie”, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Disneyland, and the World’s Fair. Of the biographies that I’ve read this is perhaps the easier read. I liked most about this book the attention Thomas gives to Mary Poppins, something Gabler’s book misses in my opinion. That being said, a reading of Gabler, Thomas, and Barrier provide what appears to be an accurate view of the man you’ll come to know simply as “Walt.”

Not reviewed here are the two Walt Disney Imagineering books. These are great but aren’t your typical front-to-back reads and tend to focus exclusively on the creative aspect, which isn’t for everybody. Regardless, they are great to have. Four Decades of Magic is a series of essays, some more interesting than others, that includes some very interesting and fun background and content. (For instance, did you know that there is purportedly a ghost that haunts Pirates of the Caribbean Florida? Chad Denver Emerson’s book will tell you all about it.) I didn’t review it here because it doesn’t have the most “finished” feel to it. And I’ve intentionally avoided Project Future but only because I’m just not as interested in the corporate side of the Disney experience. There are plenty of others but I feel good about recommending all six of these books as a part of your 2015 February Survival.

Marvel “Iron Man Experience” Motion Simulator Coming to Hong Kong Disneyland

iron-man-experience-concept-art

Back in 2009, Disney purchased Marvel and with that came the rights to use the familiar Marvel characters in the theme parks. Disney has been hard at work for the last few years to bring those characters to life around the world in the theme parks. Disney has done just that today. Tom Staggs, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts announced on the Disney Parks Blog that they will be bringing a new attraction to Hong Kong Disneyland in late 2016. The Iron Man Experience will be a new motion simulator coming to Tomorrowland based on the Stark Expo as seen in the second Iron Man movie.

iron-man-experience-poster

Guests will begin their experience by seeing the evolution of the Iron Man suit and all the different forms it has taken. Guests will then board a ride vehicle which will allow them to take flight with Iron Man and help him fight the forces of evil. The Iron Man Experience will take place in the streets and skies of Hong Kong, so it’ll be familiar to those in the area. Additionally, you’ll be able to meet-n-greet with Iron Man himself within the new area in Tomorrowland.

New “Beauty and the Beast”-Inspired New Fantasyland Merchandise Coming Soon

Vinyl-B&B

Many of you have heard of (or were lucky enough to purchase) the recently released Vinylmation series from “Beauty and the Beast”. Now more merchandise based on this classic animated film will be arriving soon to Walt Disney World and Disneyland Parks, from the Toys, Art & Collectables, and Home & Decor Teams!

Toys-Various

From the Toy Team, you can look forward to a Belle Tea Set, complete with a talking Mrs. Potts and Chip, along with a Gaston Archery Playset, and new Shields and Swords.

Toys-PuzzleFigures

There’ll also be Collectable Figures of the film’s characters and a 1000 piece puzzle of artwork from Thomas Kinkade, which I’m looking forward to.

ArtColl-Window             ArtColl-Tapestry

The Art & Collectibles Team has created a stained glass-like window, a replica of the actual window found in the Be Our Guest Restaurant in New Fantasyland at WDW. Also, a beautifully designed tapestry inspired by scenes from the film, which measures 54 inches x 35 inches.

  ArtColl-Home-Decor

And if you are a fan of the fountain outside Gaston’s Tavern, now you can have your very own statue, a replica of the fountain standing at 14.5 inches tall, and created by Costa Alavezos from the Disney Design Group, who also designed new shoe and ear hat ornaments recently available in the Parks.

From the Home & Decor Team, an 11 inch decorative figure of Lumiere will be available soon. What’s cool about this figure is that the candles will light up and “flicker” by hitting the switch on the candle base.

HomeDecor-Throw

And for those who love to collect the Disney throws, the Home & Decor Team has created a new throw inspired by the same image on the stained glass-like window, which is also available for purchase at the Disney Parks Store online.

You can find all of these items now and coming soon to Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts. You can also shop for additional merchandise inspired by the Be Our Guest Restaurant in New Fantasyland, at the Disney Parks Store online. I know I’ll be doing some shopping!

The Muppets are Coming to the Magic Kingdom

Disney stated at the D23 Expo in September that 2010 would be the year of the Muppets. Not only are the Muppets the stars of the Disney Parks “Give a Day, Get a Disney Day” campaign in 2010, but their presence in the parks might be a bit greater. Along with the refurbishment of Muppetvision 3-D at Disney’s Hollywood Studios scheduled for next year, the Muppets will be proceeding down Main Street U.S.A. in a daily pre-parade. Starting January, The Muppets “Give a Day, Get a Disney Day” themed pre-parade will come down the Magic Kingdom parade route, preceding the 3:00 PM Celebrate a Dream Come True Parade. The Muppets guests will be seeing in the park will not be the giant Muppet characters that appeared at Hollywood Studios a few years ago, but ACTUAL Muppet characters.

Other changes to the Magic Kingdom parade in early 2010 may include the permanent removal of the show stops that were added to the parade during the name change from the Disney Dreams Come True Parade in January 2009.

As usual, anything not announced yet by Disney should be taken as a rumor, but these reports are from reputable sources inside the company. Be sure to stay tuned to WDW News Today as we get more information on this breaking story.

“Disney Vacation Connection” Coming Soon

The Disney Parks will soon be introducing a new “free” method to get up-to-the-minute official information on your desktop about the Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland Resort, Disney Cruise Line, Disney Vacation Club, and Adventures by Disney. Similar to Disney Link, the Disney Vacation Connection will be a desktop message center. Unlike Disney Link, Disney Vacation Connection will focus only on vacation planning tools and information. When operating, the message center will be able to:

  • keep you up-to-date on latest news and special offers
  • help you plan your next vacation
  • have polls and quizzes that will allow you to earn points for Disney downloads
  • give you “insider” information
  • allow you to download a vacation countdown clock
  • show a calendar of upcoming special events
  • provide you with wallpapers and special animation
  • allow you to check the weather at the various resorts

While the program is not yet available for download, you can visit the official website and sign-up to be notified as soon as it does become available. Be sure to stay tuned to WDW News Today as we get more information on “Disney Vacation Connection”.
