Reservations for Ale & Compass at Yacht Club Resort Now Open

Beginning today, guests can make reservations for the soon-to-open Ale & Compass Restaurant at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort. The restaurant, set to open Nov. 26, replaces the Captain’s Grille at the Yacht Club. The new venue is themed as a New England gastropub reminiscent of an off-shore lighthouse, using salvaged materials for the decorative finishes. A few select diners will be able to sit at the on-stage “hearth” oven area, which is the focal point of the new space.

Ale & Compass will be open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, featuring menu items inspired by New England cuisine and developed by Disney’s Flavor Lab. The culinary director of the Flavor Lab, Lenny DeGeorge, is from the Boston area and spent his summers in Cape Cod.

“The menu is inspired by all the great restaurants in the New England area that I have experienced growing up,” says DeGeorge. “The New England melting pot of flavors and ingredients from Italy, Portugal, and England, coupled with central Florida influences, are present on the menu that delivers modern gastropub classics.”

Next door to the Ale & Compass Restaurant is the expanded and reimagined Ale & Compass Lounge, also opening Nov. 26. The lounge will feature a variety original and classic cocktails, an extensive list of New England and local beers, and a menu of lighter bites.

Disney’s announcement about the new restaurant included a photo review of a number of items from the menu, including:

CONCEPT ART, VIDEO: Disney Shares New Details on Coronado Springs and Yacht & Beach Club Expansions

Over the next 24 months, the convention centers at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort and Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club Resorts will be transformed to make them even more appealing to meeting, conference, convention planners, and their attendees. Disney recently shared some new details on these two expansions.

Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort

Already underway, the expansion at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort will encompass several new features, including a two-story, grand lobby welcoming Guests; a 15-story tower overlooking Lago Dorado, the resort’s centerpiece lake; 500 new Guest rooms and concierge-level suites and services; and a new rooftop restaurant and lounge boasting panoramic views.

 width=

Additionally, the expansion brings a new boardroom, event lawn, and two multi-purpose meeting rooms—adding to the resort’s current 220,000 square feet of dedicated meeting, event and exhibition space. See concept art and more for these new features in the video below:

Each of the resort’s existing Guest rooms are also being fully re-imagined with new features and amenities that appeal to savvy business travelers, such as a new desk space, beverage station and more. When complete, Guests will be able to conveniently connect to other areas of the resort via a series of bridges and walkways that pass through an island oasis.

Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resorts

As part of Disney’s commitment to creating exceptional meetings and events, they are providing meeting planners and event organizers with even more resources to deliver on their goals by expanding the convention center and renovating the Guest rooms at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resorts.
 width=

A 28,000-square-foot expansion of the convention center at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resort will bring the total amount of flexible meeting and event space at this popular resort location to 100,000 square feet.

 width=

The new convention area will boast a 16,000 square-foot ballroom that can be divided into eight dynamic breakout spaces. The expansion will also include three pre-function areas and two distinct gathering rotundas providing unique networking spaces for attendees to relax and reconnect.

Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resorts also offers 1,190 newly-renovated Guest rooms, all located conveniently within walking distance of Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s BoardWalk entertainment district.

There are also many changes coming to Disney’s Yacht Club Resort’s dining options, including The Market at Ale & Compass, a re-imagined lobby lounge, and a new concept for the former Captain’s Grille. The new market offers a small merchandise area and 28 seats for casual dining. The Captain’s Grille will also become Ale & Compass Restaurant, featuring a transformed lobby lounge and a new interior that expands to 58 seats.

Walt Disney World for College Students Part Four – Resort Pools

Where to go after a fun night at the BoardWalk? Your resort, of course.

Each of the over 20 Walt Disney World resorts are unique, with elaborate theming, extravagant resort buildings, dining locations, and of course, themed pools.

However, Disney pools are no ordinary pools; they are experiences themselves where the designers pulled out all the stops to make the resort experience at Disney unrivaled.

I’m here to give my list for the 7 (yeah, seven) best pools for college students at WDW, including all three categories of resorts on property.

Please note: Disney resort guests are not permitted to use pools at resorts other than the one where they are a registered guest. Disney Vacation Club member do have limited pool-hopping privileges, but there are exclusions and block-out dates, so please verify the current policies before attempting to pool-hop.

With that being said, let’s get into the list!

 width=

  1. Stormalong Bay (Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club Resorts) – You cannot make a list of the best pools at Disney without including this as the #1 pool area. Stormalong Bay is so large that it is shared by both resorts. Some of the features of the pool area include a giant replica of a shipwrecked boat converted into a water slide, three hot tubs, a massive sand-bottomed pool, and the cherry on top of the cake: a lazy river surrounding the pool area. It perfectly complements the seaside themes of the Yacht and Beach Club Resorts, and guests get a panoramic view of Crescent Lake, and Disney’s BoardWalk Resort across the lake, which is a beautiful sight at night. With the right timing, you might even get to see some of the higher fireworks from IllumiNations.

 width=

  1. Luna Park Pool (Disney’s BoardWalk Inn/Villas) – This pool area is a personal favorite of mine, simply because of the theme. The pool area is almost a copy of the Coney Island-style amusement parks and boardwalks of the 1910s-1930s era, and is beautifully themed. Add on the poolside bar and the Keister Coaster water slide that is designed like a wooden roller coaster where you come out of a clown’s mouth, and you have one of the best pool areas on property. It’s a cool feature that complements the rest of the pool area and resort.

 width=

  1. All Star Resorts Pools – Comprised within the three All Star Resorts (Sports, Music, and Movies), are six themed pools, two at each resort. All six pools are available for use by guests staying at any of the three All Star Resorts. Personal favorites are the baseball diamond pool at All Star Sports and the piano pool at All Star Music. Each resort has a main pool near the check-in building, towards the center of the resort, and then a secondary, smaller pool in the center of one of the themed areas of the resort. Though the All Star Resorts have the most rooms out of any of the on-property resorts, having a large selection of pools spreads out guests, which was a nice touch by the resort designers.

 width=

  1. Uzima and Samawati Springs Pools (Animal Kingdom Lodge) – This resort hosts two main pools: Samawati Springs at Kidani Village and Uzima at Jambo House. Both are great as stand-alone pools, but combined, they are incredible. Uzima is one of the largest pools on property, and has a slide and nearby bar. The pool is themed beautifully and the rock features are amazing. Rivaling Uzima Pool is Samawati Springs, which has the same amenities and features, but with half the crowds because most guests roam around Jambo House instead of Kidani Village. Less people means more chairs open and more space in the pool, and a great experience.

 width=

  1. Disney’s Art of Animation Resort – Walt Disney World’s newest resort offers three pools: The Big Blue Pool, Cozy Cone Pool, and Flippin’ Fins Pool. The Big Blue Pool, themed after Finding Nemo, is the largest resort pool on property, at over 300,000 gallons. The Drop Off near the pool offers drinks and food. The Big Blue Pool is the only pool with a nearby bar, and the first Disney pool to have underwater speakers. All three pools are available to guests staying at the resort and are beautifully themed, with large set pieces modeled after their respective movies. The Cozy Cone and Flippin’ Fins Pools, both much smaller than The Big Blue Pool, are themed to Cars and The Little Mermaid, respectively,

 width=

  1. Pop Century Resort – Pop Century has three pools: the Hippy Dippy, Computer, and Bowling Pools, all themed to different decades of during the last century. The three pools are open to all Pop Century guests. The Hippy Dippy Pool is the biggest of the three, but the Bowling Pool is shaped like a bowling pin, which, when you think about it, is both funny and cool, like something that you would never think is a real thing. There are also select nights when the resort features “Movies Under The Stars” for pool guests, so you can watch movies while relaxing in the pool.

 width=

  1. Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside & French Quarter – Ol’ Man Island at Riverside and Doubloon Lagoon at French Quarter, while not the most outlandish and extravagant of the pools on property, are quaint and wonderful. Doubloon Lagoon is themed to Mardi Gras everyday with the Mardi Grogs pool bar, and Scales sea serpent water slide, where you slide down his tongue. At Riverside, Ol’ Man Island is only accessible by wooden bridges and is tucked away from the rest of the resort. Along with a water slide, there’s also the nearby Muddy Rivers pool bar and a whirlpool tub. The pools are accessible for guests staying at either resort, and are both wonderfully themed to their respective resorts.

Next time, I will discuss the best of the best of recreation and sports on resort property.

Captain’s Grille is Becoming Ale & Compass Restaurant, Gastropub for Yacht Club Resort

When Captain’s Grille returns in October 2017, it will become Ale & Compass Restaurant, a gastropub.

 width=

A whole new Ale & Compass concept will debut at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort in October, when the lobby bar & lounge is transformed with a new interior and expands to 58 seats, offering a new menu of classic cocktails and light bites. But the biggest change is the adjacent Captain’s Grille, which becomes Ale & Compass Restaurant.

 width=

The Ale & Compass Restaurant menu is still in the works, but the re-imagined restaurant will have a gastropub ambience with New England-inspired comfort food, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. An on-stage hearth oven is the focal point. Décor is inspired by the cozy warmth of a lighthouse, as a comforting respite from the outside world. The casual, table-service restaurant will be on the Disney Dining Plan.

REVIEW: The Market at Ale & Compass Opens Bringing Counter Service to Disney’s Yacht Club

Disney’s Yacht Club Resort is a bit in disarray at the moment. The massive expansion of the convention center rolls on, meanwhile, the former Ale and Compass Lounge, Fittings and Fairings shop, and the Captain’s Grille are all closed to either be remodeled or repurposed. Half of the former Fittings and Fairings shop has reopened as a new counter service eatery for the resort: The Market at Ale and Compass. This location primarily sells a small selection of hot sandwiches, but also offers a huge variety of grab-and-go meals and treats.

 width=

A lot of work is still present near the new eatery.

 width=

An exit doorway is located where the closest store entrance to the lobby was once located.

 width=

 width=

As you can see, there is still a lot of work to be done.

 width=

Windows outside are still covered up.

 width=

The former main entrance toi Fittings and Fairings now welcomes guests to The Market. The other half of this space will eventually open as a retail location.

 width=

 width=

 width=

There is some merchandise located at the entrance, but this is primarily a counter service dining location right now.

 width=

A number of pre-packaged goods are available here, similar to the Marketplace at the Beach Club.

 width=

 width=

 width=

There is a rather impressive selection of cold sandwiches and pretty desserts in the refrigerated section.

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

Sticky buns and Spinach and Feta Pastires can be found in this warm foods section, but sandwiches must be ordered at the counter.

 width=

The interior is fairly bland, pretty much the new theme for the Yacht Club. Apparently being a convention hotel means you should rip away anything that makes it stand out from a standard hotel. This is apparently what convention-goers want.
 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

Plenty of wines for sale.

 width=

 width=

 width=

As far as drinks go, they do offer Coke Freestyle machines, something I personally enjoy.

 width=

The seating area is very modern and fairly plain. Again, if you have seen the remodeled rooms here, it comes as no surprise. If you asked me what the resort’s theme was now, I’d say it’s grey and white.

 width=

While I wasn’t there to critique the interior, I was there to try the food, so let’s see how The Market at Ale and Compass fairs.

Spicy Italian Panini ($8.49)

 width=

Capicola, Mortadella, Ham, Provolone, and Giardinere served on a baguette

 width=

I really enjoyed this sandwich. It was hot and fresh, and fairly large for the price. This was a more than filling offering which did make it hard to get through to our dessert, but it is certainly something I would order again. It was the right amount of bread, with the right amount of cheese and meats, likely making it one of the best counter service sandwiches you can find (given many such offerings around WDW are typically pretty bad).

Ham and Cheese Roll ($8.49)

 width=

Ham and Cheddar Cheese served on a Pretzel Roll

This was not nearly as good as the sandwich above and was quite small. This felt like something I would have ordered at an Arby’s and then had to cover in “Horsey Sauce” to save it from being almost flavorless. It isn’t inedible, but there are far better ways to spend $8.49 on a quick bite in this area, or even at this very location.

Mickey Mouse Chocolate Brownie ($4.79)

 width=

I have never been a fan of Disney brownies. They are often very dry and lack the moist, chocolatey flavor that makes you want such a treat. These are a nice deviation from the usual in that they seemed fresh, were nice and soft, and packed a rich chocolate flavor. Which one you should pick will really depend on your mood. This particular version is great if you want the added sweetness of these chocolate dollops on top.

 width=

Mickey Mouse Turtle Brownie ($4.79)

 width=

Based on the mood I was in, I preferred the turtle brownie, same as the one above, minus the dollops, but stuffed with walnuts and covered in a caramel drizzle. I will be returning for this dessert alone.

Lemon Cheesecake ($4.79)

 width=

I wish this tasted as good as it looks. In fact, I wish it tasted like anything. The cheesecake is almost flavorless, in fact, I almost did a spit-take writing up this review when I read it was supposed to be lemon-flavored. Hopefully the other cold desserts in the fridge are as good as they look.

Carrot-Zucchini Bites ($4.99)

 width=

The Carrot-Zucchini bites come pre-packaged with 8 pieces in a bag.

 width=

These were a fun and healthier snack option compared to the brownies, if you care about such things while on vacation. Think of it as a package of Little Bites made with vegetable ingredients and made fresh, recently in a Disney kitchen. They are quite good if you are up for something like this, and the kids would probably never even realize that they are made with vegetables as the flavors are not over-powering.

OVERALL

In review, The Market at Ale and Compass has a stellar selection of offerings to bring back to your room, but is probably not ideal for a counter service meal. While you can have a solid meal here with the Italian sandwich, the options are limited on hot food and the other sandwich we had was not very good. While the brownies were great, the cheesecake was not, so the location is a bit hit-or-miss it would seem. Either way, if you need snacks on the go, there is more than enough pre-packaged snack foods and drink options here to make everyone happy.

While the interior lacks much of a theme, it will serve its purpose well for the Yacht Club’s needs, but don’t make a trip out of your way to grab a meal here.

Disney World Introducing Premium Cruise Around Crescent Lake and Epcot Starting June

I’ve seen some weird (and overpriced) premium events at Walt Disney World, but this is probably one of the stranger ones…

PHOTOS: First Look Inside New Counter Service Location at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort

As part of the ongoing remodeling of Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resorts, the Fittings and Fairings shop in the Yacht Club is being converted into a new counter service dining location.

 width=

Thanks to @MikeyTonery on twitter for use of his photos.

It is unknown when the location will open, but it appears it may be just in time for the Summer season. The menu for the location is also unknown at this time.

 width=

Thanks to @MikeyTonery on twitter for use of his photos.

The addition of this location is important as it would mark the only counter service restaurant inside of the Yacht Club resort. Sources claim that this location will be a coffee house in the morning, offer a quick service lunch, and then be a lounge/bar in the evenings.

According to cast members at the resort, the Fittings and Fairings shop will move to the current location of Ale and Compass Lounge once this new counter service location is completed.

The Market at Ale & Compass Counter Service Dining Location Opens May 15th at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort

On Monday, May 15th, The Market at Ale & Compass will open to guests at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort.

Operating daily from 6am until 11:30pm daily, guests will find handmade salads, sandwiches, healthy snacks, breakfast pastries, expanded coffee offerings, and more at this counter service location. Guests will also be able to refill their resort mugs at brand new Coke Freestyle machines at this location.

The merchandise side of The Market at Ale and Compass will open later this Summer, as will a new counter service location in the former home of the Fittings and Fairings shop.

Disney’s Contemporary & Yacht Club Resorts Testing New “Express Fresh” Dining Service Starting Today

While many guests still enjoy traditional in-room dining, consumer preference for quick and casual dining is on the rise. To address the evolving needs of Guests, beginning February 7th and running through April 1, a new option added to in-room dining programs, Express Fresh, will be piloted at Disney’s Contemporary Resort and Disney’s Yacht Club Resort. This pilot will complement the existing in-room dining program by offering select quick and casual meal options to Guests.

 width=

The meals are presented at the Guest’s room door in disposable containers and no set up is required. Disney is stating that the meals will arrive within 30 minutes of ordering as the menus are comprised of quick-to-prepare items. Express Fresh will be offered in the menu guides as a separate insert along with the traditional in-room dining options.
