New Japanese Set? eBay rumor

Rust pointed us to this auction on eBay. According to that auction this is a new Japan Disney Store series celebrating 110 years of Disney. No confirmation so far, but it’s an interesting set. Lots of hearts and magic. Lots of figures we’ve scene before, almost like a combination of sets. The Cheshire looks similar to ones we’ve seen before. The three little pigs are all on one vinyl, like they will be for the Nursery Rhymes set.

What are your thoughts?

Unbelievable eBay Auction

I need to preface this article with the fact that I am in no way endorsing this listing, but I think it is so absurd, I need to share it with you. Also a thank you to Kevin for showing it to us. A seller from Hawaii has listed what he calls in the item description “The FIRST Disney Vinylmation Ever.” It is a 3″ blank white create your own sealed in a clear plastic bag.

As you can see, it has an official Walt Disney World price sticker and bar code. I did know CYOs were officially the first Vinylmation release but apparently, and I admit I did not know this, the first release of CYOs were not in boxes in the stores, but in clear bags at the November 2008 Festival of the Masters. (If a reader can verify this info, I’d appreciate it)

If that is true, this vinyl, in fact, is part of a first run of Vinylmation released to the public and therefore does hold a special place in Vinylmation history. In my opinion it would also hold a certain value to collectors. Especially if you consider that, most likely, very few guests kept these in the sealed bags. But I wouldn’t think the value is as high as this seller would like it to be.

Starting bid is $5,000! With a buy it now at 10 grand. A bit over zealous in my humble opinion… but I also thought $500+ for a variant was a bit high as well. Do you agree this may in fact be a part of Vinylmation history? What would you pay or trade to add this to your collection? I do not fault the seller for reaching for the stars here. I mean if someone bites, that’s a heck of a return on investment. You may as well give it a try, but I’d be more than shocked if it sells at this price. If you would like to take a look at this listing for yourself, check it out here.

Dole Whips: Now Served… on eBay?

Dole Whips are a favorite treat at Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom. You can even find them at the Polynesian Resort. But I bet you didn’t know you can order one up on eBay today? A few readers pointed us toward an eBay auction from a Hong Kong seller selling a 3″ Dole Whip figure that we are expecting to see as part of Park 9. This figure is most likely a dumpster diver and as we said many times here and on the podcast, it is not a good idea to purchase these and we do not recommend it. It hurts the hobby and you get a figure with low quality not meant to be in the public’s hands. All that said, let’s take a look at the figure.

A look at the front shows swirls in the head with a cherry in the middle. There is an umbrella in one ear and the ice cream whipped up into a point on the other.
The back features some more swirls in the head, the other side of the umbrella and a pineapple ring. Do you think we may see a variant Orange Dole Whip as well? I for one enjoy the orange version better at the parks.

The interesting thing about the bottom is the figure is officially called “Frozen Drink.” We see that it is also designed by Caley Hicks.

Sign of Prices to Come?

One of our long time listener/readers Don Sawyer sent us an interesting bit of information today. He told us how he has been in the process of collecting all the variants lately. So he has been diligently following variant sales for some time now. Even he was shocked at this one…

A WDW Park 6 “All Other Guest Areas” variant just sold for $505!!! Don says this by far the highest price he’s ever seen paid for a single variant. Same thoughts here. We do know this particular variant is mostly likely the most rare variant known to Vinylmation. But a $505 price tag? That seems extremely high with very little room for an increase in value here. What are you thoughts? Are there any single figures you would pay this price tag for? What is the most you have ever paid for a single Vinylmation 9″ or 3″?

Say Aloha to the New DCL Vinyls

Looks like an eBay seller in Hong Kong pulled some upcoming DCL Vinylmation figures out of the dumpster. Now if I can only find some Disney Cruise tickets in the dumpster by me. Unfortunately I will not be going to Alaska or Hawaii anytime soon, but the DCL ships will be and apparently some commemorative vinyls will be aboard. As always, we only post these pictures to show off some upcoming designs, we do not endorse purchasing these figures as they are damaged and hurt your collection as well as the hobby as a whole.

The first is a Lumberjack. The design on this one looks fantastic to me. Great face and logs in the ears are priceless.

Not much to the back of this one, but a nice continuation of the overalls. No cruise logo either.

It is a Caley Hicks design and limited to 1000. No word on release date. The second figure is a Hawaii themed piece.

A clear yellow with a lei wrapped around it.

The back of this one does include the logo and says “Inaugural Sailing.”

The Hawaii figure is an Eric Caszatt design and LE 2500. No word on release date for this one either.

Animal House: The Mascot Series

Update: 5/7/12 The Disney Vinylmation Blog added Mascot Series to the release schedule today. Look for them on June 22 at D-Streets. They will be sold individually in open window boxes for $12.95. No word yet on other figures.

5/5/12 A few readers sent us over some pictures of new figure found on eBay. Hopefully someone landed in detention for leaking this, as it is another “dumpster diver” from Hong Kong. This one has intrigued me more than any of the dirty vinyls we have seen the past couple weeks. The name of the series this Pluto is from is called “Mascots.”

The second I saw this vinyl, I immediately thought of a line of clothing I see at the parks. The various shirts, jackets, hats, etc… feature Mickey and Donald in a retro university style. Not until I took a peak on the DisneyStore.com did I realize they call this clothing line “Mascots.” Take a look at some of the styles below and let me know if you agree, but once I saw the name, I’m even more convinced they are connected.

Mascot Mickey Green Tee

Mascot Mickey Hat

DisneyStore.com listing showing the “Mascot” name

Donald Duck Sweatshirt

To my dismay, there is only one Donald Duck item, this sweatshirt. One I would love to have, but I would only get to wear it like once a year living in Orlando. I always thought the graphic was incredible. I really like the retro look and as you can see, they do them in a number of poses and facial expressions.

The design style chosen for Pluto just looks amazing. We do know, the artist on this one is Maria Clapsis.

If the Mascot series turns out to be like the clothing line, I will most likely be signing up day one… as long as the final product line makes the grade.

eBay Buyer Warning

We just want to put a warning out there to Vinylmation collectors. We advise you DO NOT purchase Vinylmation from eBay seller MAXTOYSHOPS. This is the seller from Hong Kong that has come up recently with some sketchy items for sale (Alice in Wonderland, Darkwing Duck). His items, by all accounts, are not legitamite. They are scuffed, with out packaging or accesories and some are being sold before being officially released. These are NOT pre-sales. According to Disney, they are illegitamate sales. You are not getting an official product. They are also selling fake combo vinylmation. Heads and body’s from various figures mixed together. We must band together, get the word out and boycott sellers like this to police our own hobby and keep the market clean. We understand, it is tempting to pick up some of these figures before release, but they are not legit. (I would also be wary of the listings of released stuff) As of 6/16/11, he has a number of figures for sale that have not been released yet. These include but are not limited to:

Bonkers D. Bobcat
Disney Afternoons Series
by Christopher Chapman

Obviously from the Bonkers cartoon, I for one and excited about this combo. But please wait until it is released. I highly doubt these “dumpster dive” pieces are included in the LE 1000. And this HK seller sells them as singles, no packaging.

Fall Apart Rabbit
Disney Afternoons Series
by Christopher Chapman
Also from the Bonkers cartoon, the design looks great, so again, I am excited. But this seller’s figures are cosmetically flawed.
Captain Mickey
Disney Cruise Line
by Maria Clapsis
The Captain must have fell overboard and this seller picked him up. He is NOT released yet as of 6/16/11. Again, a very scuffed up piece.
Darkwing Duck
Disney Afternoons Series
by Christopher Chapman
This one falls into a different category… announced, but not released. Take a look… no hat, lots of scuff marks.
FAKE COMBO
Here is an example of a fake combo. Beware! This is NOT a variant. If you have any questions about what you are buying, check our Released Series pages or email us. This is a combo from a Japan Exclusive Pirate Mickey head and the Driver’s body from Racecar 9/3 Urban 5 Combo by Eric Cazatt.

Please spread this message to all your Vinylmation Collecting friends.

Inflated Price For Park 1 Chaser

Needless to say this eBay auction turned a few heads the other day. Thanks to Brad for giving us the heads up.

eBay seller JMPERRIN from Michigan sold this Red Balloon chaser. Hey, at least he offered Free Shipping! Not many of these list too often, so it’s hard to get a full picture of the average price, but this seems to be higher than most people have seen. There is another listing from a seller in California for a Red Balloon that reference this sale and is trying to get $2,000 in a Buy It Now. We will see how that one ends. There is also a second Red Balloon listing. This one coming in from Clermont, Florida. It has 2 bids, 2 days left and is at $200. The seller does note there is no card, box or foil with this figure.

What do you think about this? Fluke or price rising? What’s the highest you have seen the holy grail of Vinylmation sell for?
