Commemorate 35 Years of Epcot With WDWCelebrations, Including a Spectacular IllumiNations Dessert Party, at “Celebration 35”

In just a few weeks, WDWCelebrations will gather like-minded fans at the Walt Disney World® Resort to celebrate the thirty-fifth anniversary of the opening of EPCOT Center®, the theme park that broke the mold upon its debut in 1982. Exactly ten years after the historic Celebration 25 event that gathered over twelve hundred guests to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Epcot® in October 2007, WDWCelebrations aims to celebrate the past, present and future of the world’s most unique theme park once again! The WDWCelebrations organization was born from the response to Celebration 25, and since that time has hosted an additional eleven unique events, each celebrating the magic of the Disney Parks while raising money for charity.

Celebration 35, a WDWCelebrations Commemorative Event

It has been the privilege of WDWCelebrations to host guests from around the world for the past nine years, and it is a special honor to celebrate the organization’s 10th anniversary this October with Celebration 35, a WDWCelebrations Commemorative Event. This new event at the Walt Disney World® Resort will encompass four days of fun, friends, and surprises. As with previous events, this celebration will include WDWCelebrations’ signature offerings to complement the official activities offered by The Walt Disney Company.

The four-day event, set for Thursday – Sunday, September 28 – October 1, 2017, will celebrate the anniversary in a grand way. Planned activities will complement the popular Epcot® International Food and Wine Festival and guests will be able to share in a visit to Pandora, the World of Avatar, the newest offering at Disney’s Animal Kingdom® Theme Park. Guests will enjoy their favorite WDWCelebrations signature offerings such as scavenger hunts, group rides, group meals, and, of course, a few very special surprises. Check out the WDWCelebrations web site for more details and a tentative schedule.

Celebration 35’s IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth Dessert Party on October 1

WDWCelebrations is pleased to announce the return of the Illuminations: Reflections of Earth Dessert Party, a significant piece of WDWCelebrations’ history and a fan favorite for many years. As was experienced during Celebration 25 and Celebration 30 five years later, guests will once again have the chance to enjoy delectable dessert options on the water’s edge of World Showcase Lagoon with a premium view of the classic nighttime spectacular as it lights up the night sky. On previous park anniversaries, Epcot has added a special anniversary tag to IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth that rivals, if not surpasses, the popular July 4th and New Years Eve tags.

How to Register for Celebration 35, Including the IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth Dessert Party

WDWCelebrations charges a nominal fee to event attendees which covers organizational costs. Additionally, a significant portion of the registration fees are donated to the Give Kids The World Village, the WDWCelebrations Charity Initiative charity of choice for Celebration 35 and many previous events. Registration for Celebration 35 costs $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 3-15.  Guests also have the option to donate additional funds to this event’s Charity Initiative when registering. The IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth Dessert Party is an additional cost of $69.99 per person, and tickets can be purchased during the event registration process. Registration closes on September 27, 2017.

About WDWCelebrations

As Epcot® prepared to celebrate its 25th anniversary in October 2007, the online Disney community was in an uproar over the apparent lack of official acknowledgement of this historic park’s milestone. In response to the Internet furor, a group of individuals decided to step up and create a fan-based event – dubbed Celebration 25 – to properly celebrate the silver anniversary. Over 1200 like-minded fans registered to attend the event. The Celebration 25 event was officially embraced by Disney management and was given the rare privilege of working closely with the management and staff of Epcot® to provide in-park event check-in, group history walks, a press conference, and a private dessert party. At the end of the day, the attendees knew they had been a part of something special – and something they didn’t want to end. Out of this demand, an idea was born: to celebrate the many anniversaries, milestones, and bonds between those who share a love for Walt Disney World. WDWCelebrations was born. And since that time, each of their unique events have offered guests the chance to celebrate the magic of the Disney Parks’ past, present and future, together.

WDWCelebrations “Celebration 35” IllumiNations Dessert Party Almost Sold Out

This is just a reminder to those contemplating attending the WDWCelebrations Celebration 35 event, taking place Thursday – Sunday, September 28 – October 1, 2017.

Although registration for the event will remain open until September 27, the popular IllumiNations Dessert Party on October 1 has a limited capacity and is currently 75% sold out. Because the event capacity is dictated by Disney Park Operations based on the size of the venue, we cannot sell more tickets after we have reached full capacity.

In case you missed our previous post detailing what WDWCelebrations is all about, we’ve reprinted it below.

A ton of changes happened in MouseGear, with all of the merchandise being reorganized again. There is also a slew of new items for sale.

PHOTOS: The Timeline of Epcot History Returns, Completely Overhauled

A few weeks ago, we were lamenting the loss of the Epcot park history timeline that once adorned the interior breezeway behind Club Cool, Epcot Character Spot, and Fountain View. Well, something pretty amazing happened yesterday…

Epcot Park History Timeline

Epcot Park History Timeline

THE TIMELINE IS BACK! Not only is it back, but it was completely refreshed from top to bottom, giving more details on park history and adding in changes to the parks made since this was introduced back in 2007 for the 25th anniversary of the park.

Concept Art and Full Details on EPCOT Center’s Never-Built Switzerland Pavilion, Including the Matterhorn!

Not much can beat that feeling of waking up on Christmas morning, running down the stairs, and ripping open the presents under the Christmas Tree… unless you’re a die-hard Disney Parks nerd. In that case, finding plans for an un-built attraction, possibly a pavilion for EPCOT Center, probably means more than Teddy Ruxpin ever will. It was a great toy and all, but it wasn’t this…

A few months ago at Theme Park Connection, this particular book came across my desk. This is a 1989 proposal for a potential Switzerland pavilion at EPCOT Center. This plan was the absolute final version that was presented to Walt Disney Company management, international dignitaries, and corporate sponsors involved in the project. It is literally filled with every last detail on what would have been World Showcase’s Switzerland pavilion (and first and only roller coaster). What you are about to see and read is our Christmas gift to you in celebration of the tremendous year WDWNT had in 2014. So we hope you enjoy a little virtual trip through the never-built Switzerland pavilion at Epcot.

Located between Germany and Italy in Epcot’s World Showcase, the Switzerland pavilion skyline is dominated by the Matterhorn, standing at 192 feet tall and 200 feet in diameter. The mountain would contain a bobsled ride with a track layout essentially identical to Disneyland’s Space Mountain attraction, but themed like the Matterhorn. Being quite different from the Florida version, Space Mountain at Disneyland features a different style of track and side-by-side seating in the ride vehicles. Imagine this as a cross between Matterhorn and Space Mountain at Disneyland, but with a larger budget and far more extensive show scenes than either attraction. While there would be indoor and outdoor scenes on the EPCOT version, the ride would be completely contained inside the large mountain structure. More on that later…

Before reaching the mountain, guests would be greeted by a quaint, rural Swiss village hidden behind some evergreen trees. The village would be home to four shops: a clock and music shop, a wood carving and crafts shop, a candy and gourmet food store, and a clothing accessories boutique. Several house facades hide the 230-seat restaurant upstairs and an extended queue for the Matterhorn downstairs. A tourism center and VIP lounge were also part for the plans.

Here you can see the facades and the layout of the stores on one side of the village. Personally, most of this seems like stores and items you could find in Germany, so I’m not sure how some of these shops would have worked out.

IMG_5074-X2

Moving to the other side of the village, let’s further inspect the restaurant…

IMG_5059-X2

The restaurant would be located across the street and dominate the upper level of each facade you see.

IMG_5062-X2

The layout was pretty ingenious as almost every seat had a beautiful view of the promenade, the village, or the Matterhorn.

IMG_5068-XL

Here we see concept art of what one of the dining rooms would have looked like, with the entire seating area positioned by windows.

And now, time for the main event…

IMG_5079-X2

Two seperate, very different plans were created for the ride, which we will call Storyline A and Storyline B. What the interior of the ride would be was still undecided at this point, so both plans were still very viable at this point. Let’s begin with Storyline A:

IMG_5081-XL

IMG_5082-XL

IMG_5083-XL

The backstory is pretty insane… it’s all about a secret Swiss bobsled training camp…

IMG_5084-XL

IMG_5085-XL

The interior queue mostly takes place in this ice cavern.

IMG_5086-XL

IMG_5087-XL

IMG_5088-XL

IMG_5089-XL

Suddenly things get very high-tech, think Swiss Space Mountain…

IMG_5090-XL

IMG_5091-XL

IMG_5092-XL

In typical Disney ride fashion, the riders start their trip and head down the wrong path…

IMG_5093-XL

Despite appearing to be outdoor scenes, all of this takes place inside of the mountain.

IMG_5094-XL

The track layout appears to be identical to Disneyland, as there are 3 lift hills.

IMG_5095-XL

One of the vignettes guests encounter on the mountain.

IMG_5096-XL

You are “timed” as you run the bobsled course, starting at this starting gate.

IMG_5097-XL

IMG_5098-XL

IMG_5099-XL

Similar to an effect that would later be developed for Test Track, but never quite worked…

IMG_5100-XL

The bobsleds then veer “inside” the mountain

IMG_5101-XL

IMG_5102-XL

IMG_5103-XL

Guests dodge a projection-based avalanche in this art.

IMG_5104-XL

Then they speed through an ice cavern.

IMG_5105-XL

IMG_5106-XL

IMG_5107-XL

IMG_5108-XL

Sorry it is blurry, but here gusts arrive at the unload and get their final race time.

IMG_5109-XL

Guests then exit back out of the mountain.

IMG_5110-XL

The attraction exits into the tourism center.

In case all of this was too expensive or didn’t appeal to those who needed to sign-off on it, a second storyline was developed.

IMG_5112-XL

The attraction opens in the same style as Storyline A.

IMG_5113-XL

IMG_5114-XL

IMG_5115-XL

IMG_5116-XL

IMG_5117-XL

IMG_5118-XL

IMG_5119-XL

IMG_5120-XL

IMG_5121-XL

IMG_5122-XL

The ride itself is VERY similar to Space Mountain in style, including these lift hills.

IMG_5123-XL

IMG_5124-XL

The ride takes places completely inside the secret training facility, with the entire experience essentially being a simulation.

IMG_5127-XL

A “tubular waveform”… Really odd…

IMG_5128-XL

IMG_5129-XL

IMG_5130-XL

IMG_5131-XL

It’s scary how much of this seems like current Test Track…

IMG_5132-XL

The ride also concludes in the same fashion as Storyline A.

IMG_5133-XL

IMG_5134-XL

IMG_5136-XL

In case the scenes for Storyline B didn’t pique anyone’s interest, alternate scenes were also drawn up.

IMG_5137-XL

IMG_5138-XL

IMG_5139-XL

IMG_5140-XL

Nothing says Switzerland like simulated explosions…

IMG_5141-XL

Now let’s take a closer look a the rockets… I mean Bobsleds…

IMG_5142-X2

IMG_5143-XL

Here are several color schemes that were laid out for the vehicles.

IMG_5144-XL

Here’s a list of who would have worked on the project, most notably John Hench was the creative leader.

IMG_5146-XL

The pavilion would have taken 3 years from approval to completion, so it may have opened around 1992-1993 if it was approved.

IMG_5147-XL

Here are some fun facts for those of you who like this kind of stuff (and I know you are out there)…

IMG_5148-XL

Concepts for the Disney Parks that are never realized are always fascinating, and to be honest, this is the first time I’ve ever had an entire book on a project like this at my disposal. I hope you agree that it is one of the most absolutely fascinating unrealized projects and have enjoyed this look at the project. We plan on going much further in-depth on this project on a future episode of the WDWNT Podcast, but until then, Merry Christmas!
