REVIEW: Tomorrowland Skyline Lounge Experience at Disneyland is Total Waste of Time

On May 26th, Disneyland Park launched the much-discussed Tomorrowland Skyline Lounge experience, an event meant to be a fireworks dessert party held on the second floor of the Star Wars Launch bay building. Based on the reaction our breaking of this story received, we decided to send someone out to review the very-first night of the experience on Friday.

 width=

Check-in took place at the Tomorrowland fruit cart, located underneath the former Observatron/Rocket Jets. The price for this experience was $45 per person, that was not collected on making the reservation for some reason, so they do collect before giving you your lanyard and wristband.

 width=

Guests lining up to enter prior to the event start.

Check-in began at 7:45pm and you are allowed up into the lounge at 8:00. You check-in (again) at the bottom of the ramp of the former-Innoventions building (now Star Wars Launch Bay on the bottom floor) where you are escorted up to the second level.

 width=

You then receive a free drink of your choice. Coke products, coffee, tea, etc., and you also receive your dessert box before being seated in one of the lounge areas. There were 4 or 5 different areas in all with several couches and chairs. At the very end of the balcony, there were several high-top tables if you would rather sit there. You were grouped with other parties, so you did have to share the space if you have a smaller group.

 width=

Once seated, you could charge your phone at one of the many charging stations, which is nice. Games were available to play such as Jenga, Connect Four and Checkers, because nothing says Tomorrowland like classic board games. You are in Disneyland, where you can play in essentially the world’s greatest playground, but hell, LETS GO FOR IT, CONNECT FOUR!

 width=

PhotoPass photographers were available to take pictures with the beautiful Tomorrowland scenery in the background, which is actually really neat. The views from up here are great, incase you have never been up on this patio (which I can’t imagine in many cases as it was open to the public for years).

 width=

 width=

Mickey and Minnie even made an appearance for a short meet and greet, the pair also available for photos. Blankets were provided by cast members if you were a bit chilly as well.

 width=

This being Disneyland, there is a good chance that the nightly fireworks are cancelled due to high winds and such. Needless to say seemingly, fireworks ended-up being cancelled due to high winds for this very first night of the experience.

The lounge itself was nice enough. The couches were nice and there were plenty of places to charge devices.

 width=

The dessert tray, while very tasty, was extremely rich. It includes:

  • Mickey Cloud Cake – Cream-filled Sponge Cake
  • Chocolate Eclipse – Cream-Filled Chocolate Cake drenched in Chocolate
  • Coconut Comet – Coconut-Strawberry Iced Sponge Cake filled with Cream
  • Planetary Pie – Mini Cherry-Filled Pie
  • Moon Rocks – Boursin Herbed Cheese, Cream Cheese, Shredded Cheddar, and Jack Cheese, Chives Pimento, and Bacon

No one sitting in our group finished any of their desserts. Again, not because they were bad, but just incredibly sweet. The Coconut Comet was basically a Hostess Zinger pumped up to eleven, and if you don’t know what a Zinger is, please head to the grocery store and rectify that. The Moon Rocks were probably the highlight of the offerings; a delicious cheese spread covered in bacon with an assortment of crackers.

 width=

The fancy-Zinger

This is a nice offering and is at a low cost in comparison to the World of Color or Fantasmic dessert party packages. However, without fireworks, it’s a giant waste of time. Disneyland Park has the most unreliable nighttime spectacular of all U.S. Disney Parks, making it a gamble each night whether the show will be performed. Even the slightest amount of wind can cancel a show due to the proximity of the park to nearby neighborhoods. Seriously, only half of the Celebrate America Fourth of July fireworks shows ever scheduled at Disneyland, have actually happened.

 width=

You could always do this with the Jenga game if the fireworks don’t happen, I guess…

This is probably why event organizers decided to call it Tomorrowland Lounge rather than a fireworks dessert party, to try to ease some of the complaints that are going to come regardless when the fireworks are cancelled. We were even told several times by cast members that the fireworks were only an addition to the experience and that the lounge is the experience by itself. Large disclaimers on the website when booking this alls make it unmistakebly clear.

 width=

$45 for dessert and Connect Four? Just come to my place and I’ll host you for $20 a person, buy a box of Zingers, and play a Fireworks video on my TV for you.

In our opinion, you would be better off just spending your $45 on the many other delicious snacks in the park and grabbing a spot on Main Street, even if you do have to be around other people. It will result in less time lost from your day if the fireworks do not actually go off. On a side note, if you are on Main Street, you could have seen the short projection show that takes place on the front of the castle when the fireworks are cancelled. You’re also not going to see the awesome projections on Sleeping Beauty Castle if Remember… Dreams Come True does perform…

In review, unless you have the strong urge for a fancy Zinger and a rousing game of Jenga (which I hoped ironically would have been the Tower of Terror version), you should probably skip the Tomorrowland Skyline Lounge at Disneyland Park.

REVIEW, VIDEO: Happily Ever After Debuts at the Magic Kingdom, The Nighttime Spectacular That Disney World Deserves

Tonight marked the debut of the Magic Kingdom’s new nighttime spectacular “Happily Ever After”, which replaced the beloved Wishes show after a 13 year run. So, how was it?

 width=

Happily Ever After at the Magic Kingdom

Getting straight to the point: I loved it. I felt the same way I felt when I saw Wishes 13 years ago. The show is a technical marvel that ties-in beloved Disney characters and music, modern and classic, with fantastic original arrangements and a theme song that will (I think) live on through the annals of Disney Parks history long after this show is gone. Fantasy in the Sky and Wishes have a more than suitable replacement which will be cherished as much once the nostalgia dies down over the weeks and months ahead.

The inclusion of most of the animated film canon is tastefully done, never feeling forced. This show rips through a lot of IPs, but does so without taking the show into and out of too many songs. You may have not thought it would make sense to throw a mixture of Disney classics into a scene with music from just one, but it works here. Think of it as the bubble scene from Walt Disney World’s Fantasmic, but on steroids, and a copious amount.

The show has so many jaw-dropping effects and such worth noting, but here’s what stuck with me:

  • A shooting star firework zips across the sky and seemingly lands on the facade of Cinderella Castle.
  • Illuminated smoke creates the illusion of fire from cannon blasts.
  • The Castle is attacked by Villains with several really unique lighting and pyro effects.
  • Lasers create a Vegas-style lighting effect on Cinderella Castle.
  • The new spotlights surrounding the Castle are phenomenal. They are used in so many creative ways from start to finish, making the scope of the show seemingly larger than life.
  • There are plenty of new fireworks shells the likes of which we have never seen before, and certainly more pyrotechnics than Wishes ever had.

There are so many great scenes to talk about, but the “I Can Go the Distance” sequence might be my favorite in any fireworks show that I’ve ever seen, maybe even in any nighttime show. It emerges from the Villains portion so perfectly and is fantastically uplifting. It’s a great lead-in to the finale. I would name a few others that I liked, but I quickly realized that the list I created included every other sequence. I’m not kidding, I made a list and all of them were on it. I went through the show video to check, and somehow I remembered all of the scenes and enjoyed them all that much that they all made my list of what I enjoyed. If you forced me to pick a second favorite, my sentimental choice would be “Out There” from the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Disney Dreams may be gone from Paris, but this scene has made it stateside and was everything I dreamt it would be.

 width=

Happily Ever After at the Magic Kingdom

The narrative of the show is not overstated, but I think resonates more strongly than Wishes. Now, please hear me out before you run to the comments section. Happily Ever After takes us from setting out on adventure, to finding friends and romance, to facing adversity, bringing yourself to the the triumph of learning that you can “go the distance” and “you can fly”, reaching your Happily Ever After. The show shares a theme of many recent Disney animated films: you can have your wishes come true in this world if you work hard enough. “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” Now, who said that?

Having only seen the show from one vantage point, I don’t have any tips for viewing just yet, but I can tell you that there are a lot of unique and cool places you’ll likely want to see this from. Up close will give you a better view of projections and lighting effects, but standing farther back will allow you to take in the full scope of the spectacle (which you will see in the video below). I’ll let you know what I think after a few more viewings. I also need to see all the new lighting in the trees to the left and right sides of the Castle, because whatever was going on there at certain points in the show looked really neat.

If Walt Disney World is the flagship of the Disney Parks, and the Magic Kingdom is the pinnacle park for the company, than this is the nighttime show it deserves. Taking what was learned from shows like Disneyland Forever, Disney Dreams, and others to combine so many high tech show elements, Happily Ever After is the next step in nighttime spectaculars and the new crown jewel of evening entertainment at Walt Disney World. It is a must see and will likely remain so for a long time to come.

Magic Kingdom’s “Happily Ever After” Nighttime Spectacular Full Theme Song Now Available for Download

If there has been one part in particular about the new Happily Ever After nighttime spectacular that guests are most excited about in all of the lead up to the show’s premiere this evening, it has probably been the music. Well, now you can own the show’s theme song.

A version of the theme sung by Jordan Fisher and Angie Keilhauer is now available for download (purchase) on iTunes. Some of this version of the song will appear in the new nighttime spectacular at the Magic Kingdom.

VIDEO: Watch & Sing Along to the Final ‘Wishes Fireworks Spectacular’ During Emotional Farewell at the Magic Kingdom

A final ride on a closing attraction can be special, but thousands more can simultaneously share in the farewell of a Disney nighttime spectacular. That’s what happened last night as the Magic Kingdom said goodbye to the definitive nighttime show of Walt Disney World in the new millennium, Wishes – A Magical Gathering of Disney Dreams. After 13 years, the Magic Kingdom fireworks show came to an end on the eve of the premiere of “Happily Ever After”, a new show that promises to take the platform to a whole other level. That being said, this evening was about Wishes and an emotional goodbye for so many guests who either grew up with the show, worked as cast members during a “Wishes shift”, or were touched by it in some way over the course of its amazing, and lengthy run.

Watch as guests cheer, sing along with, and say goodbye to Wishes at the Magic Kingdom (and apologies in advance for our terrible voices in the walk-off song sing-along at the end):

Next week, “Wishes” will have its last performance at the Magic Kingdom on the evening of Thursday May 11th and “Happily Ever After” will debut the next night on May 12th. In order to accommodate larger crowd levels expected for the final/first shows, Disney is adding additional viewing areas for fireworks over the next few days.

PHOTOS: First Look at Amazing New Lighting Effects for Happily Ever After, Magic Kingdom’s Upcoming Fireworks Spectacular

Last night, many of the new effects and pyro for Happily Ever After at the Magic Kingdom were tested out for the very first time and were visible to guests around the Magic Kingdom resort area. If these photos are any indication, we are in for an amazing new nighttime spectacular…

REVIEW: California Grill’s “Celebration at the Top” Debuts, But Does It Sip, Savor, and Sparkle $123 Worth?

Announced just over a week ago, the Celebration at the Top event offered at the California Grill on top floor of Disney’s Contemporary Resort debuted last night. Here is Disney’s description of the event…

 width=

Join us for an intimate event that celebrates fine food and fireworks.

Highlights

Experience the flavors of the Pacific Coast—and enjoy a dazzling fireworks display—during Celebration at the Top, a special event held in the private Sonoma Room and Napa Room of California Grill.

Here, you can relax, unwind and savor light bites and refreshments for one hour prior to the Magic Kingdom fireworks. Culinary offerings include:

Canapés, sushi and small plates inspired by the California Grill menu
Libations from the complimentary bar offering California wines, beers, and cordials.
As showtime approaches, step out onto the intimate and private observation deck reserved just for Celebration at the Top Guests. Here, you can enjoy an incredible view of the Wishes nighttime spectacular—the biggest and brightest fireworks in Magic Kingdom history. The lights will dim as music is piped into California Grill—so you’ll be immersed in the magic of the night.

After fireworks, head back inside to enjoy a sweet spread of petit four desserts, cordials and coffee.

Location

Celebration at the Top is held in the Sonoma Room and the Napa Room at California Grill, an award-winning restaurant located on the 15th floor of Disney’s Contemporary Resort. These private rooms are ideal for intimate events, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows and connecting to an exclusive observation deck—where you can enjoy sweeping views of Bay Lake and Magic Kingdom park.

Parking

For your convenience, complimentary valet parking is included with this event.

Pricing and Reservations

Start planning for an unforgettable evening. Explore pricing and reservation details for Celebration at the Top:

  • Pricing: $99 plus gratuity and tax per person
  • Dates: Held on select Sundays through April
  • Reservations: Book online or by calling (407) WDW-DINE or (407) 939-3463

Please note that the Wishes nighttime spectacular may be changed or canceled without prior notice.

So, Sunday, February 26th, 2017 was the first event, and we went to see just how good it would be. Mind you, the actual price of the event after tax and gratuity was roughly $123.00. Can you get your value out of an even that high in price? Let’s find out.

 width=

Check in took place starting at 6:30pm near the California Grill check-in desk, with the rooms upstairs opening for the event at 6:45PM sharp. I thought this was nice as it gave us 15 minutes to go and enjoy the view from the balcony before beginning our experience.

 width=

I honestly haven’t dined at California Grill since the week it reopened a few years back. Then again, I’ve never been a big fan. The views are unparalleled, but the food has typically disappointed me.

 width=

Regardless, it could not have been a prettier evening with nicer weather.

 width=

 width=

Once 6:45pm rolled around, we were invited into a private room with seating. The observation deck for the event was open if you wanted to go out there, but we wanted to start making the most of our time here with food and drink.

 width=

There were assigned seats last night, but we were told this would change moving forward. The views from here were nice and I thought it was a pleasant atmosphere. The tables were spaced out nicely and the event did not feel too overcrowded (maybe at the start of food service, but otherwise comfortable).

Once you are seated, you have a card with your name on it, and a strange light-up necklace thing. I don’t even know how to describe them…

 width=

At the open bar, this menu greeted guests. While this may seem like a short list, also available was Tanqueray, Captain Morgan, Ketel One, Seagrams, Bacardi, Dewers Scotch, and Jack Daniels. Basically, you could order just about anything that the bartenders could make with any of those ingredients. This is the best selection at any dessert party event at Walt Disney World, far and away.

 width=

I have to say I enjoyed a majority of the wines listed (and yes, I did try all five of them), with the Bordeaux Blend being my favorite, but the MacMurray Estate Vineyards Pinot Gris being a close second though.

 width=

A variety of beers are available as well. The bars opened with the event at 6:45PM and remained open un till 8:45PM, when the bartenders made the rounds to see if anyone was interested in a final drink before departing.

 width=

The small appetizers include two flatbreads, tandoori style chicken satay, and a pork belly bao. The flatbreads are the Duck Confit and Roasted Tomato variety.

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

The flatbreads were just OK. The chicken satay with Vietnamese peanut sauce was solid, but my favorite had to be the Pork Belly Bao. Overall, this round felt a little lacking and could probably benefit from 1-2 more items.

 width=

Sushi makes up the second food station. A Shrimp Tempura Roll, Vegetable Roll, and California Roll were available .A lobster roll is also available at this station (and it was quite good).

 width=
 width=

I liked the sushi well enough, but it’s not really my favorite that I have had.

Fireworks Viewing

Just moments before fireworks begin, you may step outside on to a private balcony and enjoy the Magic Kingdom fireworks, which is still Wishes! until May 11th and will then be replaced by Happily Ever After on May 12th. While it has not been decided as of yet, it seems likely that these Celebration at the Top events will be extended past April and continue into the new show.

On your way out, you are handed a light-up glass with champagne. This is a nice touch, and you can take the cup home.

 width=

The viewing area is behind the usual viewing area, but it is far enough behind that the guests in front of you will in no way obstruct your view. There is also more than enough room out here with the limited number of guests at Celebration at the Top. All in all, the view is as good as a regular view from California Grill (which you can get if you go dine at the lounge or the regular restaurant).

Below is video of the fireworks from this private balcony, which is quite the nice view:

Dessert

 width=

Here its the dessert station, which opens once the fireworks conclude and guests are welcomed back inside. On a side note, you could stay inside and watch fireworks through the windows if you wish, assuming you want to continue to enjoy food and drink from a climate controlled environment.

 width=

Desserts include fruit tarts, cream puffs, a creme brûlée tart, chocolate ganache cupcakes, and a hazelnut crunch cake. The dessert service began at 8:15PM and ran until the end of the event around 9PM.

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

The Creme Brûlée tart was amazing, as was the Hazelnut Crunch Cake. Overall, all of the desserts were really great, and in a lot of ways saved the event from the somewhat disappointing appetizer servings.

OVERALL

Value wise, I don’t feel like Celebration at the Top is a waste, but you may find just as good of a time (and value) at California Grill through several other methods.

Brunch at California Grill offers unlimited mimosas and quite a bit more food, all without time constraints of Celebration at the Top. As well, by showing your receipt from earlier in the day, you will be welcomed back upstairs during the fireworks that evening and be given access to the balcony. $123 can also buy you quite a bit of food at California Grill during normal meal services, which also provides access to the balcony. And lastly, the lounge at California Grill, which does not require a reservation (but may be hard to get into later in the evening), also provides, you guessed it, balcony access.

So, where is the value in Celebration at the Top? Alcohol and service. If you feel like you can put back several drinks in 2 hours, then you can find your value here. Unlike other dessert parties, the bartenders were actively making rounds to top off and replenish drinks in the dining room. This is a nice change, but still doesn’t quite do the trick.

Honestly, I had a great time at Celebration at the Top, but it still falls under “overpriced”. This isn’t so much a feeling I had when we experienced the Star Wars or Jingle Bell, Jingle Bam dessert parties at Hollywood Studios, but those are priced at just about half of this. Even though there was less time to consume alcohol, those offered a wider selection and a better value per hour than Celebration at the Top. As far as Magic Kingdom offerings go, you may be better off with Ferrytale Wishes if you prefer alcohol, and for sure you will want to just book the in-park dessert party if you have young children.

Celebration at the Top is a savory, sparkly good time if you want an open bar and an event likely free of small children. Otherwise, there are plenty of other options you should explore.
