UPDATE: Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground Has Finally Reopened Following Hurricane Irma

Since even before Hurricane Irma struck, Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground at the Walt Disney World Resort has been closed for the safety of guests and then for the clean up of the area. Despite many “fake news” articles claiming it would remain closed, Fort Wilderness and many of its offerings have reopened today, Wednesday, September 20th, 2017.

While Disney was trying to get the resort back open for Monday, the tree damage was far more extensive than they had originally estimated. Regardless, guests may now return to the resort for reservations, dining, and recreation.

UPDATE: Fort Wilderness at Walt Disney World Will Likely Re-Open Next Week

Since even before Hurricane Irma struck, Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground at the Walt Disney World Resort has been closed for the safety of guests, and now for the clean up of the area. For whatever reason, there are fake-news articles plastered all over the Internet claiming the Resort will never reopen. Almost needless to say, the resort will indeed reopen, likely next week according to Disney cast members.

As of right now, Disney is eyeing Monday for the reopening of the Resort and Campground area but has yet to make any statement on a re-opening date.

Fort Wilderness isn’t the only Walt Disney World offering still closed thanks to storm damage, with Typhoon Lagoon, the Walt Disney World Railroad, Kali River Rapids, and The Jungle Cruise still shuttered as of this story’s publication.

REVIEW: Amazing New Fort Wilderness RV Food Truck Isn’t Quite As Good As It Looks

Food trucks are all the rage at Walt Disney World these days, but I’m not sure there has ever been a cooler looking food truck than the vintage-style RV that’s now rolling around Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground…

 width=

The truck has a classic style, but also has some wonderful nods to the Walt Disney World of the 1970’s. It is located (currently) out by The Meadows and the recreation area. When we visited, it opened for business starting at 5PM.

 width=

The “earlobe” was the original logo icon of Walt Disney World, then referred to as the Vacation Kingdom of the World.

 width=

The level of detail is amazing, right down to the map sitting up in the driver’s area. Kids, ask your parents about a world before smart phones and GPS.

 width=

The classic Walt Disney World logo adorns the side, but there is also a map of the United States with decals for states visited. I’d love to know how they got to some states without visiting the ones in-between…

 width=

Many of the decals on the back are reproductions of the older bumper stickers sold at the resort. There are also references to Copper Creek and other places within Wilderness Lodge…

Let’s take a look at the menu…

There is also a selection of moonshine concoctions. Let’s try a few of the items out…

Fort Wilderness Smoked Pork Belly Tillamook Cheeseburger ($13.49)

 width=

This sounded amazing. It wasn’t. The ingredients were great, but it is the lower-quality Disney hamburger patties, not of a quality like D-Luxe Burger at Disney Springs. The Chipotle barbecue sauce, the onion ring, and the onion kaiser roll were great, but you can’t have a good burger without a good beef patty. The french fries are of the usual quality as well, which I feel hurts the dish.

Pumpkin Spiced Tea ($10.75)

 width=

This was terrible. It tasted like moonshine with a sugar-free pumpkin flavor syrup, which is what I assume goes into making this thing. In fairness, the other options have been good whenever I have had them at Trail’s End or Crokett’s Tavern at this resort, so maybe stick to the others, or just go to either of those locations.

OVERALL

I’d be happy to give the Fort Wilderness Fresh Fixin’s food truck another try, but they did not leave a good first impression. Design-wise, it is top notch and super cool. The level of detail and how well it fits its surroundings is exactly what you expect from Disney, but perhaps that sets an unobtainable expectation for the food and drink. Either way, the menu can always be fixed, and at least we got something really cool-looking out of it.

UPDATE: Guests at Some Disney Resorts Being Moved Due to Hurricane Matthew

Guests staying at some Disney resorts hotels at the Walt Disney World Resort are being moved for their safety.

Disney is offering a change of accommodations for guests at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campgrounds. Disney is offering these guests rooms at many of their other resort hotels on property and not any one specific resort.

The accommodation changes are being made today as Disney hopes to have these guests out of Fort Wilderness by Thursday.

Rare Melvin the Moose Puppet from Short-Lived Fort Wilderness Resort Character Breakfast For Sale!

So, this is one of those occasions where we are publicizing one of our sponsors, Theme Park Connection, but it’s also a case where we have something truly amazing to share with you…

For whatever reason, in 1986, Melvin the Moose from the Country Bear Jamboree was chosen as a host for a character breakfast at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground. The show and breakfast was staged at the home of the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue, Pioneer Hall, to make use of the space in the early morning hours. The puppet was used up on the stage for various vignettes while guests dined and met Chip and Dale. This breakfast and show ran under various names until it was discontinued in 1991.

The puppet had not been seen since that time, until it surfaced at Theme Park Connection (where many old, retired Walt Disney World props do) last week. The coolest part is that the puppet is up for bid right now on eBay, with the auction ending on Saturday evening. That’s right, Melvin the Moose can hang on your wall. Pretty neat, huh?
