PHOTOS: Disney Drops Custom MagicBand Readers for New Payment Devices

Starting today, Disney is removing the custom POS TouchPoint devices at all retail, front desk, and food & beverage locations and replacing them with industry standard devices.

 width=

The first of these devices were installed recently at Disney’s Pop Century Resort. It’s the PX7 Retail Multilane Terminal.

 width=

The company who designed the custom POS machines with touchpoints currently all over WDW is apparently no longer in business, and it was costing Disney a lot to maintain the existing devices.

 width=

The new POS devices still work with MagicBands (utilizing the flat reading area pictured above), other RFID payment methods, and also have the chip readers for credit cards, which is now an industry standard.

The Mickey Mouse shaped touch points that are a hallmark of MyMagic+ may be added to these new readers in the future.

The Best New Dishes from the 2017 Epcot Flower & Garden Festival – Tom’s Top 7

Welcome to the another edition of Tom’s Top 7, a continuing countdown of my favorite (and occasionally, least favorite) things at the Disney Parks around the globe. Why seven? Because Bill McKim said so!

 width=

Anyway, with the Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival for 2017 now underway, I decided it would be fun to talk about what you should be eating from the 15 collective outdoor kitchens that will be inhabiting the park for the next few weeks. I managed to eat and drink every single new offering from the Festival this year, so let’s talk about what I think are the seven brand new dishes you can’t miss if you’ll be dining your way around the world this Spring.

1. Maple Popcorn Shake – Northern Bloom

 width=

While not a dish, this is my favorite thing we had this year, and maybe in any year of the Flower and Garden Festival. Served with Tap 357 Maple Rye Whiskey, the concoction is pure perfection, offering a maple ice cream flavor with a nice enough portion of the whiskey. Let the caramel corn sit in and soak up the drink before you eat them, because a whiskey and ice cream soaked bite is unbelievably good.

There is also a nonalcoholic version, seen behind this one. Believe it or not, it’s also pretty good and a nice way for the children and those who won’t partake in such drinks to enjoy this.

2. Marquez “Hot Dog” Sausage – Taste of Marrakesh

 width=

Not really the most Moroccan dish, this one is probably more akin to something you would have at a baseball game. That being said, the bun is fresh, and the peppers and the beef & lamb link pack a nice spicy flavor. I will be back for this one, for sure.

3. Carne Asada – Florida Fresh

 width=

The Carne Asada from Florida Fresh is very quickly becoming the favorite of festival. The black bean cake underneath and cilantro lime sour cream accompany it nicely, adding to the flavor of the well-prepared meat. You would probably expect something like this out of the Mexico booth, but we all know how that usually goes…

4. Key Lime Tart with Toasted Meringue – Florida Fresh

 width=

The last time I said that I don’t usually like Key Lime flavoring, I got yelled at in the comments, but I’m going to remind everyone anyway. That being said, this was amazing. The portion size is what you would get from a full-price pastry at any WDW bakery and the flavor and presentation matches (at least before Josh hit it with a cup). If you get one dessert at the event that isn’t the returning Whiskey Cake, this should be it.

5. Potato Pancake – Bauernmarkt

 width=

There are two potato pancakes at this booth, but stay away from the apple sauce version of this. This potato pancake topped with carmelized ham, onions, and herb sour cream is really solid and a great value (as far as Epcot festivals go) at just $4.25.

6. Crabless Cake – Urban Farm Eats

 width=

Vegetarian or Vegan dishes usually aren’t my thing, but this crabless crab cake is a real winner. The Old Bay Remoulade sauce is what makes it, but I thought the cake itself was of a good quality. The vegetable slaw was tasty as well.

7. Meatball Parmigiana – Primavera Kitchen

 width=

The Italy booth, in this case called Primavera Kitchen, has not been known for its quality at any Epcot festival in the past, but I though they offered a much better lineup this time around. The meatballs in this dish are of the same quality as Tutto Italia and there is plenty of cheese. Overall, it’s a really healthy portion for the price, offering 6 meatballs. I can’t believe I’m recommending something at the Italy booth…

You’ll be glad you did!

If you get these 7 new offerings while at the Flower and Garden Festival this year, you will without a doubt have a phenomenal time. Next time, I’ll go over 7 returning favorites of the Festival that are an absolute must. Now get eating (and drinking)!

A “Tron” Reboot With Jared Leto Starring Is In The Works by Disney

 width=

“Tron 3” may be officially dead, but now news is coming out that a complete “Tron” reboot is in the works that would star Jared Leto (“Suicide Squad”).

According to The Hollywood Reporter:

The studio is in the very early stages of development for a new Tron movie, with Oscar-winning actor Jared Leto circling to star, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. No writer has been hired at this exploratory stage, and no filmmaker is involved. Justin Springer, who co-produced Tron: Legacy and exec produced the Tom Cruise sci-fi movie Oblivion, will produce. Leto and and his producing partner Emma Ludbrook would also be involved in some producing capacity if the project moves forward.

Tron was the 1982 Disney movie set in the fantastic world inside a computer program, a cyberspace called the Grid. Starring Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner, the film wasn’t a hit at the time but was influential with its envelope-pushing special effects and drew a cult following in the years after due to its imaginative story.

In 2010, Disney revisited the world with Tron: Legacy, which starred Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde and brought back Bridges. Joseph Kosinski directed. The expensive movie made $400 million worldwide, good enough to warrant interesting in a sequel.

But it’s been a series of shutdowns and restarts for a sequel and just as it seemed it was heading towards pre-production, the studio pulled the plug for good in 2015.

Sources say this new project is not a direct sequel and is being built out of the source code of the deleted Tron 3 script. Leto would play a character named Ares, who has not appeared on screen before but was a key player in that script.

At this stage it’s too early to tell if Kosinski or actors from Tron: Legacy will return.

It’s too early to tell, but I dont like this idea. There are many fans of “Tron Legacy”, including myself, and we wanted the story to continue with a proper sequel. It doesn’t make sense to create a new character and base the story around him and not the characters and their stories that we have grown to appreciate. I know Jared Leto won an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal in “Dallas Buyers Club” but I saw him recently in “Suicide Squad” and in my book, he is the worst Joker we have ever seen. Hopefully Disney knows what they are doing. We’ll have to wait and see.

First Official Photo Of Emily Blunt As Mary Poppins In “Mary Poppins Returns”

 width=

Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) returns to the Banks home after many years and uses her magical skills to help the now grown up Michael and Jane rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives in MARY POPPINS RETURNS, directed by Rob Marshall.

Here is the first glimpse of Golden Globe® winner Emily Blunt (above) as Mary Poppins in “Mary Poppins Returns,” the all new sequel to Disney’s 1964 film “Mary Poppins.”

Directed and produced by Rob Marshall, “Mary Poppins Returns” also stars Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer and Julie Walters with Colin Firth and Meryl Streep. The film, which introduces three new Banks children, played by Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and newcomer Joel Dawson, also features Dick Van Dyke and Angela Lansbury. The film is set in 1930s depression-era London (the time period of the original novels) and is drawn from the wealth of material in PL Travers’ additional seven books. In the story, Michael (Whishaw) and Jane (Mortimer) are now grown up, with Michael, his three children and their housekeeper, Ellen (Walters), living on Cherry Tree Lane. After Michael suffers a personal loss, the enigmatic nanny Mary Poppins (Blunt) re-enters the lives of the Banks family, and, along with the optimistic street lamplighter Jack (Miranda), uses her unique magical skills to help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives. Mary Poppins also introduces the children to a new assortment of colorful and whimsical characters, including her eccentric cousin, Topsy (Streep). The film is produced by Marshall, John DeLuca and Marc Platt.  The screenplay is by David Magee based on The Mary Poppins Stories by PL Travers with Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman writing all new songs and Shaiman composing an original score.
