Trading Locations Reportedly on Decline at Disneyland Too

We reported last week about an internal memo sent to Walt Disney World Cast Members announcing a decrease in trading locations around the resort (read about it here). Now, we are getting word that Disneyland will see a similar decrease in trading locations.

While we have now knowledge of a memo, we do have word from OC Vinyl Don (VinylmationTraders.com) and others who spoke to Cast Members who confirmed the reduction of trading locations at Disneyland. Word is, there will only be three locations: D-Street, Disneyana (Disneyland) and Off the Page (DCA).

In the previous article, we discussed many pros and cons and heard your opinions as well. Now, Disneyland guests… what are your thoughts? Comment, email or call 209-28 MOUSE and we will play your comments on the next podcast.

Online Petition to Save Park Trading Boxes

On Episode 107 of the Destination Vinylmation Podcast, we interviewed Bryan Forsberg. He is a WDW Annual Passholder who began a dialog with Disney and started an online petition to save the trading boxes at the parks. If you believe in saving the trading boxes, there are two things you can do about it right now.

1. Send an email with your position to Bryan at: disneyvinylmationcollectors@yahoo.com. He is collecting these emails and forwarding them in bulk over to his contact at Disney. He remarked how Disney had no idea so many people felt this way about the trading boxes. Sending all the emails to one centralized location helps to increase the impact.

2. Sign Bryan’s online petition here.

One Ohioan’s Opinion: A Vinylmation Editorial

“Keith is one of the first people I remember meeting on twitter after starting Destination Vinylmation. We asked him to write a post if he ever had anything to say, and almost two years later we got this great opinion piece.”- M.C.

My name is Keith and I am a Vinylmation addict.

That seems to be an appropriate way to start this off don’t you think? Let’s first look at my dilemma. Vinylmation… They were a curious thing when I ran across them two years ago in the Art of Disney store in Epcot. I had seen them at the all-star sports gift shop before then but brushed them off seeing as I had no clue what the things were. My turning point was seeing the Muppet series. I have been a Disney and Muppet fanatic for my entire life. It has simply been engrained in me. Once I understood that these were artist pieces, and that they were themed to incorporate one of my other loves (Muppets) I was hooked.

I bought maybe four Muppet series 1 boxes and that was it for that trip. Little did I know two years later I’d be headed back to the same hotel under the same circumstances with about 40 doubles to trade. I’m pretty sure the first thing I did once I got my room key was pick up my carry on (where I had my traders) and head down to the gift shop. I had only traded once in Ohio at a local Disney store because mostly they were flooded with cutesters which I do not collect. I was excited at the prospect of mystery boxes, that is until I had to deal with getting around all of the challenges they present. But more on those later.

My hotel didn’t have a mystery box. They said it was broken. So instead they had a clear bin full of probably 24. I have to say I started off well. I had loads of Animation 1, Toy Story and Muppets 1 to trade. The woman at the trading box let me look through the figures and figure out what I wanted, then I asked “I can only trade once right?” She then looked around and replied… “I don’t see a manager so you can trade as much as you want.” Music to my ears! So I traded once more and decided to head to the parks.

The most common theme between locations was that there was no theme, no specific set of rules, no strict guidelines to follow and that was kind of fun. Vinylmation rules seem to resemble urban legends, they vary from place to place. In one place I was told I could pick once, only once, and that I absolutely must trade. Thank goodness that only happened once. Pretty sure it was at Once Upon a Toy. Needless to say I only traded there once. The boy working there acted as if those rules were ever broken that the world as we knew it would cease to exist. I’m fine with rules, even strict ones… But not when there is no guarantee to the quality or worth of what I’m getting back. Overall my experience with trading and the “rules” of the trade were pretty great though. That is really the only interaction that was less then fun.

I had a lot of “pick three numbers” and a lot of “you can trade twice” situations which are pretty wonderful when there is no clear box as a backup. I also had a number of “what are you looking for” interactions which help some but sometimes targeted cast members in on one series when I really just wanted anything I didn’t have. Once it worked out well and I basically helped refresh a box for a couple of figures I was looking for. It was like we were working together for the greater good.

I had a wish list of figures I wanted to find and I’m happy to say I found a number of them. Especially the Muppetvision 3D balloon. That particular figure was found completely by luck on my last day at the parks during a special interaction with a deaf cast member at the gallery store at Hollywood Studios. It absolutely made my trip. All in all trading at Walt Disney World was a fun and hectic experience. With about 40 figures I wanted to trade, I had my work cut out for me! It also made me very aware of the challenges of trading.

I’ll end this out with some suggestions to make the process more enjoyable and less stressful. Disney, I hope you are listening 😉
-Train cast members to look for flaws in figures. (I didn’t run across this a ton but there were some figures missing paint, or dirty… One even looked like it had snot on it)
-Have a simple guide for cast members to check for accessories before allowing figures to be traded. (Traded for a Blackbeard with no hat, had to put him back, I was pretty bummed. Same thing happened with an Epcot 2000 without a wand.)
-Once figures go “ON SALE” don’t allow them in trading boxes anymore. (The last few days I tried to trade I could not find anything other than Occupation series which I have no interest in whatsoever.)
-Only allow a certain number of one figure in each box. (I had one cast member turn a box around for me and the whole entire bottom row of the box was Big Al. If they still want to accept them that’s fine but they need to keep the boxes varied.)
-Re-purpose some of the figures that are trade box regulars. (Retire the Bearded Man… They just need to own the bad designs. There has to be something they can do with the more undesirable figures they have done. Melt them down and recycle them into new vinyl? I’m not positive what the answer is but those figures shouldn’t be forced on collectors.)
And finally… The rules. I actually like the differences in rules depending on where you go in the parks. I don’t think you should ever be forced to trade though. If you pick a number and it’s a clearance red create your own and you are trading a new park figure you just bought for full price you should not be forced to trade. There’s nothing “fun” about that and that’s what trading should be.

Hopefully, this helps newbies like me go into trading at the parks with a little more understanding of the challenges they might run into. Just like the guys say every week! Keep on collecting!
-Keith

Trading Vinylmation in Japan

Update: 1/16/12 I was so excited today when I saw Vinylmation World tweet this picture of the Japan trading boxes I’ve been looking for!

It also seems like the article confirms this light up box trading only occurs at specific times… “every Saturday and Sunday from “13:00-14:00, 17:00-18:00.” We also got to see the “spin the wheel” box that the images below refer to.

1/21/11 I was peeking at the Japan Disney Store website the other day, and thanks to the handy Google page translator, I was able to make my way around just fine. One of the interesting things I discovered was the interesting trading method they have inside the Disney Stores there. Update: 1/17/11 According to a comment by a reader, this is only available by the large Disney Store near Disneyland.

It appears that a Mystery Trading box, similar to ours, has a light on it that illuminates each door at random. The guest, instead of picking a number, pushed a “STOP” button on a control pad that halts the light on a numbered door. You then trade into that number.

It says this replaces “the wheel with the numbers.” So maybe you never got to pick you own number. The description also makes this kind of mystery trading sound like “an event” and not normal everyday trading. Does anyone have any experience with this? I’d love to see pictures of the actual trading boxes.

They also have the clear 3 figure trade boxes we are all accustomed with.
Woohoo! Look how happy the trader is to find that gem in the box!
But don’t try to trade that Cutesters Bumble Bee you mixed with the EPCOT Holidays Around the World or that Monkey who lost an arm. Save those for our next Combo Contest.

Disney Announces Hong Kong Trading

According the vinylmation.com the Hong Kong Disneyland will be introducing vinylmation trading to select locations around the park. This will start on November 21st.

We here at Destination Vinylmation hope you guys enjoy the trading aspect as much as we have in the States.

Collecting with Claudia: Trading Vinylmation

Most of us depend on trades to enhance our own Vinylmation collection, so the more options we have for trade locations, the better. This article will explore the most common trading practices, locations, and suggestions.

For those collectors who live in Florida, it is a bit easier to trade on Disney properties like the Magic Kingdom, Downtown Disney, Resorts, Trade Nights, and so on. You can find a list of trading spots on Disney properties by going to: Destination Vinylmation’s Trading Locations page or typing “trading locations” in the search bar (on the top right).

Though not everyone has the luxury of living near Disney, there are several options that I will discuss here.

One trading option is to go to Disney Stores, which are located in malls throughout the country. Do take into consideration that not all stores will have Vinylmation trading, so check with your local stores.

If you cannot get to a Disney Store, there are many online trading websites available (please do your own research before you sign-up for a particular trading site). Here is a list of commonly known trading sites; however, this is by no means a complete list:

Vinylmation Kingdom http://vinylmationkingdom.com/

Vinylnation http://www.vinylnation.net/

Vinylmation Trader https://sites.google.com/site/vinylmations/

Vinylmation Traders http://www.vinylmationtraders.com/

Facebook, youtube, and Craigslist are also other options when searching for new trading experiences.

Advice & Suggestions:

*SAFETY is #1. I cannot stress this enough. A vinylmation is NOT worth risking your privacy and safety.

*If you are under the age of 18, please make sure you have your parents’ permission.

*Be honest throughout the entire trading process. For example: accurately describe your vinyls that are up for trade (are they new, damaged, scuffed, have paint loss, etc…).

*Do your research, ask other collectors, go online, talk to your friends.

* When trading via “snail” mail, I would highly encourage you to obtain a tracking number, and package the vinyls very well. Bubble wrap is a great way to ensure your figures are safe during transit. It is very disappointing to receive a vinyl that is damaged due to poor packaging.

If I have left out any trading options, websites, groups, suggestions, etc… please make sure to inform our readers by leaving a comment below. Thank you, and KEEP ON COLLECTING!

Let The Trading Begin!

Fellow Vinylmation collectors are sharing their Disney Store Experiences below. Join in the conversation… send us some pictures of trading at your area Disney Store!

Disney Stores accross the country are now getting into the spirit of trading Vinylmation. Over the past few weeks, the trading boxes were shipped all accross the country and today marks the first official day of trading at Disney Stores. As of right now, just clear box trading at the stores, no big mystery boxes. Trading, weather it be Vinylmation or Pins, is an essential part of the guest interaction that makes Disney so special. It is great to see trading in the stores. In fact, The Playwright in New York, NY sent us these pics from the Times Square Disney Store:

Big Baby! Good to see things are consistent both at the Parks and Stores.
The Playwrite traded his Cutesters Too Tiger Kid for the Fairy Godmother.
Send in pictures of Vinylmation Trading at your local Disney Stores and let us know how you like it. For more information about Trading Vinylmation, check out our Trading Pages.
Christopher from Indiana
Here in northwest Indiana, the Merrilville store had three figures in an open box. I was the first one in the store and the first to trade. I traded a rain coat girl from cutesters 2 for a queen bee from Urban 6. It was open box of 3. There were no special or exclusive figures and the cast members said they had not been sent anything special from Disney for the trading boxes. Hopefully if trading goes well, Disney will expand the in store trading.
Tyler from Colorado –
I brought my Big Baby to trade of course…. and the cast member said one of her co-workers was wanting that one! I guess out here in the middle of the country Big Baby is wanted!

JT from NJ –
Freehold NJ store had a Woody (in the clear box!)

Tyler C from Colorado
I stopped by the Disney store today with Big Baby and Dodger in hand to trade. I traded the two for Lotso and Radcliffe. They did have the card with Lotso, so guessing he may have been one of the Vinyls they put in the case originally. I asked the Cast Member if they had many people trading, she said not many, more people were asking her what they were.

Let the Trades Begin!

Disney officially announced today that trading will start in Disney Stores on May 31st! They said that the experience will be “based on the experience in the parks”. So I guess that means there might be Clear boxes AND Mystery boxes?? There will be more info to come. Although I also expect several stores to start trading early based on previous experience.

When you store starts trading, let us know. Take a pic and we’ll post it!
