VIDEO: See How Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Prepares for a Hurricane

Walt Disney World’s theme parks have only closed unscheduled on 4 occaisions in history, so the announcement today that the parks would be closing early and would remain closed through Friday is still surreal to many of us. With today being such a historic event, I decided to travel to the Magic Kingdom just to see what the atmosphere was like. What I found was a rather odd scenario.

Guests had shown up, more than I would have expected in fact, just to make the most of the little time they had. What was interesting, shocking, and honestly really cool was the number of steps Disney has already taken to prepares the park for the storm. Tarps around construction projects had been taken down, banners around the park removed, and all manner of flags tied up for safety. Here’s a video of many of the preparation taken to keep The magic Kingdom safe during Hurricane Matthew:

Pretty neat, huh?

While Walt Disney World is closed for the next day and a half, be sure to stay tuned to WDWNT.com for the latest developments. If you are staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel this evening, please contact us and let us know how it goes! We would love to hear about the experience (but most importantly, stay safe of course).

UPDATE: Walt Disney World Theme Parks Will Open Earlier Than Originally Scheduled

There is no list of what locations at Disney Springs will be open as of yet. Disney will begin bus service for hotel guests to and from Disney Springs at 6:30PM.

Disney Springs was supposed to be shuttered all day today, but the weather caused by Hurricane Matthew was not as bad as originally expected, at least in the Orlando area.

Update (4:15pm) – Here is a list of what is open tonight:

VIDEO: Disney Springs Opens to Guests During Hurricane; Polynesian Guests Go Swimming

With Disney Springs opening in limited capacity at 5pm, I decided it might be kind of cool to drive on down to Disney World and see exactly what was going on during the final gusts and rain drops of Hurricane Matthew here in Orlando.

We began our evening at Disney Springs, where despite inclement weather, many guests began to show up as establishments opened at 5pm.

Meanwhile at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, guests make due by going swimming and peering across the lagoon at a shuttered Magic Kingdom:

BREAKING: Images of AVATAR Theme Park Merchandise Leak; New Details of Animal Kingdom Land Emerge

There are still a lot of unanswered questions about exactly what guests can do and what they will see when they enter Pandora: The World of AVATAR at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 2017. Today, an inside source has provided us our first look at some of the pins being developed for the attraction, revealing some interesting details about this project that have been shrouded in mystery.

The ACE logo pin in fact confirms that ACE will play a huge role in the experience on the “planet”. ACE was first introduced to guests at the exhibit previewing the AVATAR themed land at the 2015 D23 Expo. The following video is a good introduction to the company:

While we know we will be immersed in the story of AVATAR since many cast members working in the area will need to learn the fictional Na’vi language and culture, it also appears that Disney branding will not be clearly present on any of the merchandise packaging either. This will continue the illusion with guests that they are on Pandora and that ACE is actually their host for the experience, selling merchandise in their own gift stores on the planet. Cast members will reportedly be sporting ACE name tags as well, rather than Walt Disney World name tags that are worn in all other park areas.

While it may be us overthinking, some of the places and things showcased in the mystery pin set could very well be places and experiences for guests on Pandora:

  • Mo’ara – This is reportedly a location that will play a larger role in then AVATAR sequels, but is not mentioned in the first film nor any lore beyond that as of yet.
  • Navi Cultural Relations – Guests will get to meet the large Navi people in meet and greet type experiences (or even roaming around perhaps).
  • The Mountain Banshee Project – This will play a central roll in the Flight of Passage attraction where guests will ride aboard Banshees. Part of this project will allow humans to ride on these magnificent creatures, something usually only done by the Na’vi people.
  • The Drum Circle – This is a ceremony where Jake Sully became a member of the Na’Vi in the film. It is possible there will be an experience where guests can take part in a similar ceremony and become an honorary member of the people of Pandora.
  • The Pandora Cavern Tours – This could be its own walking experience, part of the queue for either of the two ride-through attractions in the land, or a scene in the Na’Vi River Journey ride.

While they may be just pins, they are honestly the first new piece of information on the project we have received in over a year. The existence of the final product also possibly means that the opening of the land isn’t very far away, perhaps 6 months or less at this point. Whatever the case may be, we will soon be getting more details at Destination D next month. Until then, let the speculation begin.

REVIEW: Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar Introduces Happy Hour and Seasonal Food & Drink Specials

Now, don’t adjust your computer or phone just yet, the title of this review does include the term “Happy Hour” and it is for a Disney-owned and operated restaurant. No, this is not clickbait and it isn’t a rumor, it actually currently exists.

img_3792

Now, we have taken quite a few “review” trips to Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar at Disney Springs since it opened last year. There was the first round of menu changes in May, followed by the radical menu changes in July, with the latter injuring the menu quite harshly. Jock’s opened with a lot of promise: souvenir mugs, good food, good drinks, collectible coasters, and an Indiana Jones theme. Sadly, the mug production issues (The Anything Goes still doesn’t exist), the sudden cease in the creation of more coasters, the removal of all of the themed drink stirrers, and the demolition of the original menu’s highlights have sort of killed the buzz around this once red-hot establishment.

In an effort to bring some life back to Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar, two menu changes have been made. Recently, both a Happy Hour menu and a Seasonal Offerings menu were introduced at the bar, so we just had to go and check it out.

Happy Hour is offered Monday through Friday, from 3PM until 6:30PM, offering 3 new appetizers, as well as slightly discounted beer pitchers, wines and cocktails. And yes, the reoccurring price on the menu seems to be seven…

The seasonal specials menu currently offers Autumn flavors in both food and drinks.

Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar – Drink Specials

Autumn Smash ($7)

Autumn Smash ($7.75)

Before you even ask, yes, they all came in the same silly, slanted glass. I really liked the Autumn Smash a lot, but it got hard to drink towards the bottom as the cinnamon settled down there.

Cubra-Libre ($7)

Cubra-Libre ($7)

I had never had a Cubra-Libre before, but it is probably the only drink we tried yesterday that I would try again. It was very smooth with little no to no alcohol taste.

Cubra-Libre ($7)

Cubra-Libre ($7)

Screwdriver ($7)

Screwdriver ($7)

The screwdriver was fairly standard, not much for my taste.

Smoking Bullet ($8.50)

Smoking Bullet ($8.50)

The Smoking Bullet is passable as well, but not something I would order over a Reggie’s Revenge or Anything Goes.

Belloq’s Bacon Fries ($7)

Belloq's Bacon Fries ($7)

Belloq’s Bacon Fries ($7)

I will say I enjoyed these a lot, even though they were a little skimpy on the toppings. At one pint, you may say to yourself, “Where’s the cheese? Oh, I guess that’s it.” The portion isn’t huge, but if you’re going to eat here and really like steak fries, this may not be a bad option. I’d probably still stick with the “not-as-good-now” Rolling Boulder Sliders and the Air Pirate’s Pretzels, but these are at least worth your consideration for being no less than 5.4 billion times better than the Plaza Loaded Fries.

Jock’s Loaded Nachos ($7)

img_3807

One of the more (if not most) generic dishes I’ve ever had at a Disney bar and lounge, the nachos are just your everyday, run of the mill nachos. It’s a small portion nd chips aren’t particularly good, but if you really must have nachos, these will do the trick I suppose.

Classified X-3 Chicken Wings ($7)

Classified X-3 Chicken Wings ($7)

Classified X-3 Chicken Wings ($7)

The one real winner on the Happy Hour menu is the wings. These were perfect in every way. The chili garlic glaze has a nice kick to it, but there is still plenty of flavor as well. I highly recommend these as they might very well be my favorite thing on any portion of the Jock Lindsey’s menu.

Junior’s Thanksgiving Flatbread ($14)

Junior's Thanksgiving Flatbread ($14)

Junior’s Thanksgiving Flatbread ($14)

Thew often overrated Earl of Sandwich has made quite a bit of change selling a holiday sandwich which combines all of the flavors of a Thanksgiving meal, so why not try to replicate it on a flatbread? This is why, this is why you wouldn’t replicate it on a flatbread. There was no reason for this to be a flatbread. Also none of the flavors blend well on here, with or without the bread underneath. Did anyone in the kitchen try this as a whole, or just individual pieces of it? I wouldn’t recommend this under any circumstances, but I suppose it was still better than the Pizzafari Cheeseburger Flatbread, if that means anything.

OVERALL

img_3814

In its heyday (so Fall 2015-Spring 2016), I would visit Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar on a weekly basis. Since July, this is the first time I have been in the place and I am reminded why. The frustrating cuts in quality, the unceremonious destruction of the original menu, and the fact that 1, maybe 2 of the 5 new menu items were of any value really tells the story of the problems with this place currently. I used to rank this over Trader Sam’s at the Polynesian, but with their recent menu changes, I think Sam’s is now far superior. Sam’s always had a better drink menu, but Jock’s had the better food. This has completely switched over the last 3 months.

Jock Lindsey’s is not where I would choose to eat or drink at Disney Springs. I would much rather grab a bite a Blaze Pizza, the BOATHOUSE, or D-Luxe Burger, then maybe grab a drink at Homecoming, Morimoto Asia, or even Splitsville.

Disney Cast Members Will Need to Speak Na’vi to Work in Pandora: The World of AVATAR

Disney theme park experiences are all about immersion and bringing guests into a another world, but I’m not sure they have ever gone this far before…

Pandora: The World of AVATAR at Disney's Animal Kingdom

Pandora: The World of AVATAR at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

An internal casting call for “proprietors” (basically the leaders of each land in Disney theme parks) has gone out at Walt Disney World for Pandora: The World of AVATAR at Disney’s Animal Kingdom:

“Pandora: The World of Avatar is committed to becoming the most immersive and engaging land in the history of The Walt Disney Company. Through unparalleled storytelling, place-making and attention to detail, this role will be critical in leading and inspiring our Cast as they set the standard by which all other experiences are measured.”

The more interesting part is the basic job qualifications for the role, which include a proficiency in a new language…

“Ability to understand, articulate and teach Na’vi and Pandora culture and its connection to the Disney’s Animal Kingdom brand”

“Willingness to learn a new language: learnnavi.org

“Inspire, educate and hold Leaders and Cast accountable to be an active participant in an immersive experience”

“Develop and deliver a plan to premier Pandora: The World of Avatar as the most immersive experience ever accomplished”

Now, I’m not the biggest fan in the world of the AVATAR film, but this even sounds exciting to me. Could you imagine a theme park land that requires every cast member “living” in it to actually know and be a curator of the history and culture of the mythical realm they work in? Seems like the kind of storytelling you always hope for as a guest.

Pandora: The World of AVATAR at Disney's Animal Kingdom

Pandora: The World of AVATAR at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Regardless, the fact that this casting call has gone out also means that Pandora: The World of AVATAR can’t be that far way from finally being completed and that we are very likely well under a year away from the grand opening (or maybe even soft openings) for this new theme park land.

VIDEO: Watch All of the Magic Kingdom’s 45th Anniversary Festivities

On Saturday, the Magic Kingdom celebrated 45 years of operation at the Walt Disney World Resort. In honor of this milestone, a few special events and offerings took place at the park, and of course, WDWNT was on the scene to check them out.

45th Anniversary Welcome Show

Guests were greeted just beyond the Magic Kingdom’s turnstiles by a slightly altered version of the daily welcome show, complete with a very nice banner hanging from the train station:

45th Anniversary Cinderella Castle Ceremony

A special one-time-only ceremony was held at Cinderella Castle, featuring 45 Disney characters, the Walt Disney World ambassador team, and president of the resort, George A. Kalogridis:

45th Anniversary Specialty Food Offerings

Two specialty food offerings were available on Saturday: a “Celebration Dog” at Casey’s Corner on Main Street U.S.A., and a 45th anniversary cupcake (in two flavors) that was available throughout the park. Here is a short video review of both of those items:

UPDATE: Disney Waiving Fees on Most Trip Cancellations Due to Hurricane Matthew

With Hurricane Matthew looming, Walt Disney World is in many cases waiving cancellation fees for vacations booked by guests at Disney resort hotels.

Disney is reportedly willing to work out arrangements with any guests staying at the resort Wednesday, October 5th through Sunday, October 9th, 2016. It is not guaranteed than fees will be wavered, but many guests are being offered full refunds without penalization upon contacting Disney.

Dr. Strange Meet and Greet is Coming to Walt Disney World?

A rather interesting casting call was put out recently on the Disney Auditions website:

Disney Parks Talent Casting is seeking male actors to portray Doctor Strange for a limited engagement appearance this fall at the Walt Disney World® Resort, near Orlando, FL.

As you probably know, no MARVEL characters appear at the Walt Disney World Resort per the deal between MARVEL and Universal Parks and Resorts. So, has Disney found another loophole in regards to the Dr. Strange character, similar to those surrounding the Guardians of the Galaxy (who once appeared at Disney’s Hollywood Studios) or will this take place outside of a theme park? Only time will tell.
