Disney Announces Line-Up for Star Wars Weekends 2011

From the Disney Parks Blog:

Star Wars Weekends 2011 will be a Tour de “Force” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, celebrating the grand opening of the new Star Tours attraction as the Walt Disney World Resort theme park welcomes Jedi, Sith, Ewoks, Wookiees, galactic bounty hunters and stormtroopers for the park’s annual celebration of all-things-Star Wars.

The fun takes place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from May 20-June 12, 2011.

Celebrity Hosts for the event this year are James Arnold Taylor (voice of Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and Ashley Eckstein (voice of Ahsoka Tano in Star Wars: The Clone Wars). Ashley (seen in the photo above with R2-MK and Jedi Mickey) will host “Clone Wars: Behind the Force,” a closer look inside the popular animated TV series. James will present another event-first: he will star in a one-man show that showcases some of the many voices he has performed throughout his career, including those from The Clone Wars.

Opening weekend will kick off the month-long event in grand fashion, as fan favorite Anthony Daniels (seen in the photo above at a filming session for the new “Star Tours – The Adventures Continue” attraction), who brought C-3PO to life and is the only actor to appear in every theatrical chapter of the Star Wars saga, will make a golden return to the event. Dave Filoni, the talented artist and supervising director of The Clone Wars, also will be a special celebrity guest for Weekend I.

Pirate Mickey Sets Sail for Japan

Update: 4/28/11 The Japan Disney Store exclusive Pirate Mickey Hero of the Caribbean went on sale today and we found some already up on eBay. These pics are from eBay seller hawaiian_seaside. We also now know the artist is Kazuhiro Murase.

4/13/11 Looks like Japan is getting a great looking Pirate Mickey Vinylmation. Vinylmationworld.com yesterday found an ad on the the Japan Disney Store website advertising this upcoming release. According to our translation of the ads, this piece will come out on April 28th and cost 1290 Yen (approx. $15.75).

Pirate Mickey Hero of the Caribbean

Here’s the turnaround of our latest hero all the way from Japan. It appears to be using the old mold. This figure’s release comes almost a month before the 4th movie in the Pirates franchise hits theaters and more than 2 months before the Pirates attraction based series is projected to hit shelves here in the states. This colorful figure will be sold in a pirate themed tin.

Check out Pirate Mickey’s gold tooth and bandanna. The bandanna looks a lot like the one on the Jack Sparrow Pirate Vinylmation we saw last week. Jack is part of the Pirate of the Caribbean Attraction Series. Also notice the scar by his right eye. His eyes are a bit goofy looking.
Look at the bling. The artist gave Mickey lots of jewels and rings. On his left hand are two pieces, one of which looks like a blue Mickey Head.
Here’s the bottom of the piece. It says, “Pirate Mickey Hero of the Caribbean” The artist signature is to hard to read, but it looks like it starts with a K. Anyone know who that might be?
Looks like tins are back, or this figure was made before the change, we might never know. We do like the tins, and using it as a treasure chest makes a lot of sense! Lots of detail, including lots of booty, handles to carry it, and a Mickey shaped keyhole in the lock.

More Ariel’s Undersea Adventure Details Released

While their is not a lot of new information in this article, Imagineers Larry Nikolai and Chris Crump do mention a few interesting details about The Little Mermaid attraction opening June 3rd in Disney California Adventure.

From Disney Insider…

Look at this stuff, isn’t it neat? Paradise Pier area’s collection of turn-of-the-20th-century-style boardwalk attractions will be more complete when The Little Mermaid~Ariel’s Undersea Adventure opens June 3, 2011, at Disney California Adventure Park. With exterior architecture reflecting the era, Walt Disney Imagineers used whimsical special effects, gadgets and gizmos aplenty to create an immersive experience overflowing with seaside flavor. Creative Director Larry Nikolai and Show Designer Chris Crump discuss the whozits and whatzits galore behind the Park’s first fairy-tale-inspired ride.

Though construction took almost four years, Larry tells us that the desire to convey Ariel’s story as a ride-through attraction is almost as old as the film. “‘The Little Mermaid‘ has been around for 22 years. We started designing the attraction several times, but it never materialized.” Luckily for fans, all that’s changed.

According to Larry, Ariel’s Undersea Adventure attraction will be as memorable as the movie. “Our vision was to celebrate the music, because that’s what people remember. We recorded brand-new orchestra music for certain scenes and in-between transitions.” Guests can sing along to original songs from the film, including “Part of Your World,” “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl,” and “Poor Unfortunate Souls.”

Scuttle welcomes Guests into the shipwreck’s broken hull before they sail through scene after scene. From Ariel’s grotto to Sebastian’s “Under the Sea” extravaganza (the largest scene), the show boasts 183 characters in all, including 49 spinning starfish. Larry talks about how they selected characters for “Under the Sea.” “We chose characters mentioned in the lyrics – there are 129 in that scene alone!”

Cramming a full-length movie into a five-and-a-half-minute attraction is always tricky, but Larry points out some of the other challenges. “One of the most amazing things we’re doing is animating Ariel’s hair. It’s important her hair looked like it was ‘floating’ because it almost has a life of its own in the movie. We didn’t animate individual strands of hair … that would’ve been distracting.”

Fortunately, Larry says, Imagineers got pointers on the sculpture process from Ariel’s original animator, Glen Keane. “He advised us to handle it as a mass with its own fluid movement apart from hers – but not to ‘over-animate.'” Chris adds, “It’s common to work with a character artist, but not the original animator. John Lasseter wanted us to consult with Glen to ensure we remained faithful to his vision. We were very lucky!”

New technology made other Imagineering firsts possible, like the digital 3D design program used to model the building facility, portions of the ride, and the major environmental components. Larry explains that skin technology advances helped the team construct Ariel, King Triton, and Ursula. “The fact that Ariel really isn’t wearing much of a costume is challenging. To get the skins on and off each figure, we need seams, fastenings, and closures. Finding the right place for them is difficult when you’re working with that amount of exposed skin.”

Chris describes how skin is handled when it doesn’t cover the entire body. “The hands or necks of most figures usually terminate into a sleeve, cuff, or collar, which makes things a lot easier. In Ariel’s case, her body is all skin from the waist up to her arms and head – that’s a pretty complicated ‘skin suit.'” Larry says that King Triton and Ursula presented the same difficulty, but thankfully, “Skin technologies have changed immensely in the last 30 years. New materials hold up better and provide more movement. If we’d done Ariel 15 or 20 years ago, it might not be the same result … which is a really neat development.”

Ursula’s one of the most advanced Audio-Animatronics® figures ever built. As Larry puts it, “She’s amazing in sheer size alone – 12 feet wide by 7.5 feet tall. We’ve given her torso a ‘squash and stretch’ function (traditionally used in hand-drawn animation) so she can dance along to her number. Our figure animator, Ethan Reed, has done a wonderful job with her.” The staggering sea witch conjures up some surprising special effects at her caldron as well, which only enhance her delightfully dark side.

Now that their work is done, both Larry and Chris agree it’ll be hard to let Ariel go. “The show’s become so much a part of our lives … it’s such a high point for both of us. We’re going to miss the people too. While working on a project like this, you get close to everyone on your team – the artisans, architects, engineers, construction workers, painters, and electricians who’ve all worked tirelessly. I want to see very long lines,” laughs Chris. Larry nods. “Our finale goes a little beyond the film. I think it’ll surprise people and give them a lump in their throats … that’s what I’m hoping for.”

Be part of their world when The Little Mermaid~Ariel’s Undersea Adventure opens in Paradise Pier June 3 at Disney California Adventure Park!

WDW News Today Introduces New Features For Easier Navigation & Communication

As many of you are aware, several weeks ago we closed the WDWNT Network Community Forums to allow us to move forward and “keep up with the times”. This community and the world around it has changed greatly since we launched the forums over three years ago, and it was time to move on. In the battle for your precious time, forums were unnecessary with the existence of social media like Twitter & Facebook. In an effort to allow you to comment on the Walt Disney World news & information we post here on WDW News Today without having to then post your feeling in several other places, you can now leave comments on and share our posts through connectivity with a multitude of social media sites (Facebook, Twitter,DISQUS, Google, & Yahoo!). We hope this will make it easier for you to discuss Disney topics with fellow fans and connect with our community. (NOTE: The comment system can be accessed from a small link at the bottom of each post on the main page, but by clicking into each post, you can simply scroll to the bottom to find the comment area)

In addition, we have made several eliminations and additions to our site. The calendar of Walt Disney World events and the “Fantasyland Project Tracker” are history, but we have added links to our most popular news topics to the navigation bar. Right now, Star Tours II & the Fantasyland Expansion are the two hottest topics, so we have links that will send you right to a complete listing of every story we have had on that subject. We hope this will make it easier to track projects step-by-step and to not get lost searching for the topic in the sea of news we post on a regular basis.

So go ahead, try out the new comment system and let us know what you think of these changes below!

Vinylmation Speculation

Sometimes it’s fun to take some Vinylmation info and rumors out there and speculate on what’s to come. We know Disney plans to put out an alien Vinylmation after this mysterious picture was posted on the Vinylmation blog yesterday:

Couple this, with the rumor of a Robots series coming to Disney Stores… and you get the weirdest and coolest set made to date:
DV Artist rendering of possible Vinylmation series
We contacted Disney today and they do not have a comment at this time on the rumored Disney Store exclusive Robots or Cutesters Like Us series. We will let you know the details when we hear more.
As for the Alien, he may also be a release at the upcoming Sci Fi Trading Academy at Disneyland on June 24th (Details). So far, only pins have been announced as far as merchandise available at the event. A quick look at the catalog of pins shows that most are Disney or “fun” themed designs… only one came close to the classic alien look of the above Vinylmation concept art.
That pin catalog also gave us peak at a Robot themed pin set, filled with Disney Robots from past and present:
This great looking set includes Aly San San (Star Tours 2), R2-MK (Star Wars Weekends), WALL-E, V.I.N.CENT (Disney’s Black Hole), B.E.N. (Disney’s Treasure Planet). Might we see a Vinylmation set along the same lines?
What do you think about the Alien? Just an upcoming Urban figure or a Sci Fi set? How about the possibility of a Robots series and another Cutesters themed set? It’s fun to speculate on what’s to come in Vinylmation and we will be sure to bring you any official news from Disney as we get it.

Villains Invading D-Streets 5/6/11

It looks like the Disney Stores couldn’t keep the evil Villains contained. Now it seems that they will be taking over both D-Street stores on May 6th. They even got the California Store to open at 8 AM!
