Opening of Planet Hollywood Observatory at Disney Springs Delayed Again

It seems the Planet Hollywood Observatory at Disney Springs will not be opening in mid-December 2016 as originally anticipated…

dtnemail-planet_hollywood_observatory-019be

Guests with mid-December reservations were contacted today and told that their reservations were cancelled. Those with late-December reservations have still not received word if their reservations will be honored, most likely because Planet Hollywood simply does not know at this time. The official website for the Planet Hollywood Observatory is now only taking reservations beginning January 3rd, 2017.

We will keep you updated as more information becomes available.

Entertainment Weekly Releases Brand New Images And New Story Information From “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) Darth Vader credit: Jonathan Olley/© Lucasfilm LFL 2016

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is now only 24 days away and to get us even more excited Entertainment Weekly has released some brand new images and interesting background stories from the film.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) Felicity Jones (C) and Riz Ahmed (behind) - briefing room, with Felicity and the Senator Jebel (guy in red and grey), Senator Vaspar (guy in blue), Senator Pamlo (lady in gold). Also back of Mon Mothma's head

At the center of the story is Jyn Erso (played by Felicity Jones), an outlaw who becomes a key agent for the struggling alliance of Rebels. Here, we see her and pilot Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed) in a familiar Star Wars scene — a gathering around a briefing room to discuss the plan of attack. But she is surrounded by new faces: Senator Jebel (Jonathan Aris, of Sherlock) in red and grey; Senator Vaspar (Fares Fares, of Tyrant and Zero Dark Thirty) in blue; and Senator Pamlo (Sharon Duncan-Brewster, EastEnders and Bad Girls) in gold. In the foreground with her back to the camera is the leader of these leaders: Mon Mothma, played by Genevieve O’Reilly (Glitch) who is reprising the role from the prequels.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) Tivik (L) and Diego Luna

Diego Luna, right, plays Captain Cassian Andor, a veteran spy for the Rebellion who has a network of contacts throughout the galaxy who help him keep eyes and ears on the activities of the Empire. Andor is like a CIA field agent, and this man, Tivik, played by Daniel Mays (The Infiltrator, Atonement) is one of his underworld connections to the insurgent group led by Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker). “He is one of Cassian’s contacts on the moon of Jedha,” says co-producer John Swartz.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) Darth Vader credit: Jonathan Olley/© Lucasfilm LFL 2016

Look who’s back. The man in black. With the Empire at peak strength, so is Darth Vader (again voiced by James Earl Jones.) But this time he is a threat not just to the Rebels but to Imperial special weapons director Orson Krennic (played by Ben Mendelsohn.) “There are military men who are interested in a really effective piece of military hardware, and Darth Vader is a little bit beyond that, right?” says Kiri Hart, Lucasfilm’s head of story development. “He’s tapped into something on another level, on a spiritual level. So, that’s part of the fun of Vader in the context of the Imperial Military. He’s got a broader perspective.”

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) Ben Mendelsohn credit: Jonathan Olley/© Lucasfilm LFL 2016

Krennic has a lot to prove. The Emperor has invested a great deal in the Death Star, and it has taken much longer than expected to develop. Vader is the enforcer, responsible for spurring it along, but he harbors doubts — not just about the planet-destroying laser, but about the man who is responsible for perfecting it. “Here is the thing about Krennic: his perspective obviously is that of a person who doesn’t understand the Force,” says Hart. “And Darth Vader comes at everything from the perspective of understanding the Force. So that I think is the thing that you see sort of separating Darth Vader from other characters with regards to a super weapon like this.”

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) Death Troopers credit: Jonathan Olley/© Lucasfilm LFL 2016

Krennic has a long history with Jyn Erso’s father, Galen (played by Mads Mikkelsen), a scientist who is an expert at manipulating kyber crystals — which are the key element in the making of a lightsaber blade. They were once friends, and Krennic sponsored his research and protected his family. But the Imperial weapons chief sent his Deathtrooper commandos to capture Galen when he fled to avoid working on their weapon of planetary destruction. This is the world the Ersos retreated to: Lah’mu. “It’s meant to be a fairly secluded world,” says Swartz. “We shot it in Iceland, at a place where there’s beautiful black sand and green mountains poking through. The family went into hiding to a world where you wouldn’t normally have a farm, but that’s as far as they could get from Galen’s past life.” It’s named after Laamu, one of the real-life tropical locations in the Maldives where Rogue One shot scenes for the planet Scarif. The filmmakers liked it so much, they named another world after it.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) X-Wing CR: ILM/© Lucasfilm LFL 2016

The wheel-shaped space station that an X-wing squadron is attacking is the Shield Gate. The world below is Scarif, a tropical planet that’a one of the Empire’s key military-industrial complexes. The filmmakers describe it as a galactic Los Alamos, the top-secret desert town where scientists and engineers built the first nuclear bomb during World War II.The Emperor built a giant wall around the whole world — in the form of an energy field. It’s meant to keep outsiders away, and the Empire’s top secrets locked away beneath. (Some fans have also comically referenced its similarity to a scene from Spaceballs, probably unintentional.)

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) X-Wing

In these shots, you see Rebel X-Wing fighters during the movie’s critical battle — attacking and breeching the space-station gateway as it skims the surface of the shield, opening a doorway into the planet’s atmosphere.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) Donnie Yen (L) and Felicity Jones (R) Credit: Giles Keyte/© Lucasfilm LFL 2016

After an encounter on the storm-stricken world of Eadu, Jyn Erso rides aboard a starship with two key members of her commando squad: the blind, Force-faithful warrior monk Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen) and his pal and protector, the machine-gunner Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen). Rogue One is crafted as an extreme underdog story, with the Rebels outgunned, outmanned, outnumbered and outplanned. “In many ways, the Rebels don’t have a leg to stand on,” Jones tells EW. “They’re a motley crew, they all have had difficult backgrounds. They’re all outsiders in some way, and they’re coming together to fight something far bigger than them, more efficient. The Empire is wealthier, and it has everything the Rebels don’t, so the odds are definitely stacked against them.”

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) Rebel U-Wing fighter

The U-wing is a new Rebel starship in the galaxy, but it’s made up of pieces of familiar ones. The cockpit is similar to one from the Y-wing bombers, the engines are straight off of an X-wing, and the front-facing pronged wings are reminiscent of the Jedi Interceptor from the Star Wars prequels. “Our conceit is that the U-wing came from the same factory that was manufacturing X-wings,” says John Knoll, an executive producer and visual-effects supervisor for Rogue One, who also pitched the original story. “It’s just like if you look at cars from one [automaker], you see design themes carried across multiple different product lines.”

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) Donnie Yen and Wen Jiang with Rebel Marines

Rebel Marines, preparing for battle, their spirits stoked by the words of Jyn Erso, who has become their Joan of Arc-like leader. “What George [Lucas] did when he created in Princess Leia was make an incredibly dynamic, funny, strong female character,” says Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “So he certainly laid the groundwork for that and I think it’s imperative that we carry that forward.”

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) Riz Ahmed credit: Jonathan Olley/© Lucasfilm LFL 2016

Riz Ahmed as Bodhi Rook, a pilot from the Force-sacred world of Jedha who was conscripted into service by the Imperials before stealing away to join the Rebellion. He’s a character with a lot of anxiety and guilt, and deep agitation.” Bodhi was certainly not fully formed when I came on board,” says Ahmed (best known for Nightcrawler and The Night Of.) Rogue One director Gareth Edwards described him in terms of a frenetic survivor. “He talked to me about some kind of ideas he had. He spoke about Dennis Hopper in Apocalypse Now. He spoke about Dustin Hoffman in Papillon,” Ahmed says. And during the reshoots, Bodhi was one of the characters whose backstory was deepened to make for (hopefully) a deeper emotional resonance.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen) credit: Jonathan Olley/© Lucasfilm LFL 2016

Donnie Yen’s Chirrut Imwe is not a Jedi, not Force-sensitive in the way they were, but he does believe in the lost faith they followed. “Something that’s a very obvious departure on this picture is that we really have no Jedi,” Knoll says. “This takes place in a time that’s after the Jedi purge in Episode III and before Obi-Wan reemerges and starts training Luke, and before Yoda gets involved. So this is a dark time when things are very bleak and the Jedi have not come back.”But there is still hope.”In that era, there are still brave people who are doing heroic acts, who don’t have those Force powers, who still fight and die for the cause of good,” Knoll says. “And I think, I want to hear some of those stories. What are these people who are the more ordinary citizens of the galaxy who see outrageous acts occurring and feel like they have to take up arms against the status quo to, you know, fight for good.”

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) Director Gareth Edwards on set with actors Diego Luna (Cassian Andor) and Felicity Jones (Jyn Erso) on the set credit: Jonathan Olley/© Lucasfilm LFL 2016

Director Gareth Edwards on set with Diego Luna and Felicity Jones. “Even though there’s a lot of pressure on this movie, it’s really impossible to feel it because it reminds you so much of when you grew up and when you felt most comfortable,” says Edwards, speaking from Skywalker Sound in Northern California, where he was tweaking the final audio mix earlier this month. “It’s hard to get intimidated when you can constantly look left and see a Stormtrooper or look right and see an X-Wing. It just feels like you’re at home again.”

VIDEO: First Teaser Released For “Cars 3”; “Cars” Is Going To A Very Dark Place

capture222

I did not see this one coming. I like it! Pixar has just released a trailer for “Cars 3” and it says right in the tag line, “From This Moment, Everything Will Change”. It looks like it is going dark, but probably not that dark. It’s Cars. I really hope they go with this animation because it looks like a huge leap from what we have seen in the past.

“Cars 3” is in U.S. Theaters Summer 2017.

Learn the Basics of Coding With Moana

If you’re looking to get your career in computer science started, Disney may just have a solution for you.

i-jth7c9t-xl

As of today, Disney has launched a new coding tutorial called Moana: Wayfinding with Code. This free introduction to computer science works similarly to a video game. Users help Moana and Maui sail across the ocean and learn the basics of coding along the way to assist in steering and sailing the boat. Later in the experience, the Kakamora attack Moana and Maui, forcing players the utilize their coding skills in order to avoid attacks.

i-ltrzxhz-x3

Coding is broken down to a simpler version called “Blocks,” which just requires dragging and dropping in order to write code. This vey rudimentary take on coding will help learners to grasp the more difficult concepts that come with text-based programming.

Moana: Wayfinding with Code can be accessed for free here.

For the third year, Disney is collaborating with Code.org to host Hour of Code. This year’s Hour of Code events will take place from December 5 through 11 as part of CS Education Week. During the week, Apple stores worldwide will be hosting coding sessions using Moana: Wayfinding with Code.

PHOTOS, VIDEO: Walt Disney Imagineering Unveils Prototype Sorcerer Class Bus for Disney World

While it may never see the light of day, Walt Disney Imagineering was tasked with changing Walt Disney World Resort buses for the better and created something called the Sorcerer Class transport.

The Sorcerer Class Bus, a prototype by Walt Disney Imagineering for Walt Disney World

The bus (displayed just for attendees of the D23 Destination D event over the weekend) looks like any Walt Disney World Resort bus on the outside, but inside guests would find special lighting, pre-recorded audio triggered by guests, and a tricked out interior design.

In theory, the automated announcer would talk guests through what they could see at their destination, but also recognize birthdays and other events on-board the motor coach through the RFID technology in the MagicBand.

With special Sorcerer Mickey Mouse themed-straps, posters with the Disney World park icons, and other decor, the bus is far more charming than the usual fare that transports guests from one place to another around the Vacation Kingdom of the World.

The lighting above is in-time to a variety of audio playing abroad the bus, best viewed in our video down below:

Again, Disney clearly stated that the busses are not in production, nor are they planned to be, but it is interesting to see that this was at least a concept. It is always said that good ideas never go away at Walt Disney Imagineering, so it is more than likely that some of the features of this transport could show up at Walt Disney World at some point in time. We will just have to wait and see…

BREAKING: The Magic Kingdom Adding In-Park Cabanas for Guests to Rent

You may be used to renting cabanas at Disney water parks, but now Disney is adding the offering to its theme parks…

Kingdom Cabana, now for rent at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom

The Kingdom Cabanas will be added to the Magic Kingdom Park on November 27th, 2016. Situated near Space Mountain in Tomorrowland, the cabanas (which are pretty ugly looking white tents in this reporter’s opinion) can accommodate up to 8 guests. They are available for a daily rental price of $649.

Amenities in the Kingdom Cabanas include private and shaded seating, cold beverages, snacks, a lockable storage trunk, electronic device charging stations, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, insect repellent, a small refrigerator, one fruit basket, a one-time delivery of ice cream novelties and desserts, personalized Mickey ears, and reserved viewing space for parades and fireworks.

Bookings for the cabanas are now open by calling 407-WDW-PLAY or visiting concierge at any Disney World Resort Hotel.

A WDWNT reader also sent us the following photos of the cabanas being set up at the park recently:

REVIEW: Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory Re-Opens with New Look & Menu

After being closed for several months, the Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory recently reopened at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter. Besides undergoing a massive overhaul in design, the menu has also seen several changes over the time of the closure.

img_8124

img_8122

More props are scheduled to arrive and be hung from the ceiling of the restaurant, but until then, the interior is fairly plain.

img_8123

img_8125

img_8136

One of the columns that separates the ordering area from the seating area was removed in favor of additional register space. It is a little strange to see a spot where a column clearly belongs but is simply devoid of it.

The remodeled condiment and drink station features a first for a Walt Disney World Resort counter service: a permanent installation of a Coke Freestyle machine.

For now, it kind of just looks like a neutered version of its former self.

The tile-work near the drink station was the one part of the remodel that I liked. The rest… well…

Well, enough talking about it, let’s eat it…

Crawfish Mac and Cheese Burger ($13.49)

img_8145

The Crawfish Mac and Cheese burger was heavily publicized and seemed to garner the most interest from you, the reader, so I went ahead and ordered it. I don’t know where the crawfish flavor was, but I couldn’t find it. It was basically a mac and cheese hamburger, which is fine, but it really didn’t taste like anything unique or different. The fries were great, but otherwise I was fairly unimpressed with the dish.

img_8146

For my second side, I chose the macaroni salad, which was surprisingly good for being at a counter service restaurant.

Crispy Fried Chicken on a Biscuit ($10.99)

img_8149

Once I saw that this chicken sandwich had Voodoo sauce, I became insanely excited about it. In the one vacation in my life that wasn’t to a theme park, I visited New Orleans and fell in love with the cuisine there, especially anything with Voodoo sauce, which can be on the spicy side. This sandwich was good, but the sauce had little heat and just not enough flavor. The biscuit also crumbled once we tried to pick this thing up.

img_8150

The coleslaw was good enough, but nothing crazy.

Mardi Gras King Cake ($4.49)

img_8152

I did thoroughly enjoy the king cake and the pastry was of a good enough size that more than one guest could share it after a meal. Again, it isn’t going to be of the quality (or even style) you would find in real New Orleans, but it is good enough that I would order the doughy treat again.

Overall

In review, I wasn’t really blown away with much that we ate here, and beyond that the time we waited for food to be prepared and then to checkout on this particular visit was absurd (20-25 minutes). Honestly, I would just take a short trip down the road to Riverside Mill at Port Orleans Riverside if you are looking for an often exceptional counter service dining experience in this area. Three new hamburgers offered over there (which I will have a review of really soon) are among the best I have had anywhere at Disney World and truly blow away the sandwiches we had at the Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory.

MOVIE REVIEW: “Moana” Sails Beautifully Despite Some Stormy Songs & Characters

53524869d1babc39b91ef7bb_1badb390

There was a time where Pixar was king of CGI animated films and Walt Disney Animation Studios took a back seat to the hits that Pixar was pumping out on a yearly basis. As of late, the studios have changed seats. With recent hits such as “Tangled”, “Wreck-It Ralph”, “Frozen” and “Zootopia”, Walt Disney Animation has shown they are a force to be reckoned with. “Moana” is the studio’s 56th animated film for Disney, but does “Moana” deliver or does it sink to the bottom of The Pacific?

collagedsddsd

“Moana” comes to us courtesy of the team of legendary Disney directors, Ron Clements and John Musker. Clements and Musker were responsible for the following Disney classics:

  • The Great Mouse Detective (1986)
  • The Little Mermaid (1989)
  • Aladdin (1992)
  • Hercules (1997)
  • Treasure Planet (2002)
  • The Princess and the Frog (2009)

“Moana” is Clements and Musker’s first CGI film for Disney.

0186965001473945290

Moana (Auli’l Cravalho) is the daughter of Chief Tui (Temuera Morrison) and is being instructed by her father to become the leader of their tribe.  Moana soon demonstrates that she is a wise and beloved leader. The survival of the tribe is threatened by some plague-like events which forces Moana to make a decision as to whether to disobey her father’s wishes or journey beyond the safe shores of her island home and search for the legendary demigod, Maui (Dwayne Johnson), with hopes that he can save her village from famine and extinction.

moana-maui-disney-movies-polyneisan-influance-princess-movie

“Moana” is a movie that is bound to be another Disney classic. It is a movie that is fun for the whole family. It has a fairly original story, an enjoyable musical score and it is a visual feast for the eyes. Clements and Musker continue to show that they still have the skills to deliver impressive work blending both story and music together. The voice cast was perfectly cast especially newcomer Auli’l Cravalho, who provides the voice of Moana. I would say that the message for this film is to believe in yourself and that you will find you can do things that even you didn’t believe you were capable of doing, especially if it is for the good of others. And that is a great message to both kids and adults.

moana-maui-432x243

‘The animation in “Moana” is one of the most beautiful films that the Walt Disney Animation Studios has ever made. I noticed a lot of new and innovative techniques displayed in this movie and it’s great to see that the animators are always looking to advance the art of CGI animation instead of rest on their laurels. The colorful tropical setting, the ocean and especially Maui’s hair really stand out.

20moana1-master768-v2

You can tell that Disney has been going after both demographics, girls and boys, with having two main characters for each. One being a strong independent princess and the other being a demigod warrior voiced by a wrestler. I feel like the advertising has been pushing Maui on us more than Moana, but make no mistakes, this is Moana’s story and she is great role model for all children, not just girls. She follows in the footsteps as such classic Disney Princesses such as Ariel and Rapunzel by showing strong independence and a thirst for adventure but she also shows so much love for her family similar to Anna and Elsa. Speaking of love, there is no love story. Kind of odd not to have a love story in a Disney princess movie, but it is a nice break too and I thought it made it a better movie.

pua-and-heihei-moana-disney

The animal sidekicks are great in this movie. We dont see much of Pua The Pig but he is a cute character that both kids and adults will love. Heihei The Rooster has a larger supporting role and steals almost every scene he is in. Both are examples where you dont always need talking animals for comedy to work. I also loved the Kakamora, who were living warrior/pirates coconuts. They definitely could have been Disney’s versions of The Minions but felt they could have used more screen time.

eb4a2443a91d77cd16c96a7047a62e0814b5f4f1

Now for the negative, and for the most part they are minor.

Dwayne Johnson does a good job of voicing Maui, but I liked his performance better when he spoke as a more traditional Southern Pacific-an. Dwayne Johnson throws in a lot of his enthusiastic personality, including his “Rock” persona. I am never a fan of American slang and modern phrases ending up in movies that take place in a particular time period and locations outside of the United States. I was thinking of how Andre The Giant in “The Princess Bride” blew away The Rock’s performance. Andre never threw in lines like “body slamming” but would make rhymes about peanuts that made everyone laugh. I felt the directors may have asked Johnson to ad-lib, or maybe it was of his own doing, but it was too much. The Genie in “Aladdin” worked because it was something new and it had Robin Williams just being himself. But what Williams has done has been copied for almost 25 years and it’s getting old. I could do without adding hip stuff to movies that don’t require it. Dwayne Johnson seems like a great guy but he always plays himself in every movie he is in.

maui_0

I wasn’t crazy about the character of Maui. He basically was a jerk and an attention freak. And when you get to the end of the movie, you realize that he really messed things up for everyone in this movie, even more-so that you thought. He is a fun character, and at one point you have sympathy for the character, but ….. he is still a jerk. I did research about the mythological character Maui and in Hawaiian mythology he was kind of like Hercules. I wouldn’t call Maui a hero in this movie. Just that his arrogance and conceit caused a lot of people pain. More than half the movie was about Moana trying to convince Maui that only he could save her people after what he did that caused all of the problems that everyone had to begin with. Moana is the real hero of this movie.

moana71

Also Disney, PLEASE! Lay off the butt and peeing jokes in your movies! You should be better than other animated studios and shouldn’t have to find humor by using toilet humor.

lead_960

Going into the movie, I knew that Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote songs for the movie. The only thing that I knew about him was that he wrote the music and starred in the play “Hamilton”. To me, Lin-Manuel Miranda is no Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. The music that they wrote for “The Little Mermaid” and “Beauty And The Beast” were classics. All very memorable and forever in most peoples mind’s when they think of Disney. Most of the songs in “Moana” are either hit or miss and not very memorable. It sounds more like Miranda had a Broadway musical in mind and I know that it will inevitably hit Broadway or a Disney Cruise Ship. At times, I felt his lyrics could have been written by a gradeschooler. I kept guessing what his rhyming lyric was going to be and was usual right. Daughter, let me guess? Water! BINGO. “How Far I Go” is without a doubt the best song from the movie, but I swear they must have played that song at least 4 times during the movie. It’s a great piece but “How Far I Go” is no “Let It Go”.

tamatoa-the-hermit-crab-moana-disney

Speaking of music, the absolute worst character in the movie had to be Tamatoa (Jemaine Clement). Tamatoa was a giant crab that lived deep in the ocean and had a love for all things shiny. Jemaine Clement sings a song called “Shiny” and it is awful. It has to be one of the worst songs ever made for a Disney movie and again Miranda uses his genius to rhyme such words as “shiny” and “hiney”. Like I said, enough with the butt jokes, Disney. That song and scene totally felt so out of place. It was weird, it was boring and was so not needed. They could have cut that 10 minutes out of the movie and it would have flowed so much better. Definitely skipping that chapter when the movie comes out on Blu-ray.

inner_workings_final_frame_nologo-copy

My last negative was the pre-movie short, “Inner Workings”. It’s like “Paperman” and “Inside Out” had a baby. An ugly baby. Again, more potty humor of peeing, uninspired animation and a pure ripoff of the two movies I previously mentioned. I was kind of disappointed that “Zootopia” did not have a short before it, but if they were going to make something like this, they were better off. If your running late for “Moana”, you may have actually done yourself a favor.

moana-disney-web

I know I listed a lot of negatives but I still really enjoyed “Moana” and I highly recommend it. I actually enjoyed this more than “Frozen” and “Finding Dory” but not as much as “Zootopia”. I believe most Disney fans will really love this film and will look forward to adding this movie to their Disney library. The verdict is still out as to whether this will be a classic or not. Only time will tell. But i think it will. And I hope it will.

I give “Moana” an 8/10.
