“Finding Dory” Swims To Break Box Office Records; Pulls In $136 Million Domestic Opening Weekend

finding-dory

This weekend, “Finding Dory” swam into theaters and beat the competition to become the #1 Highest Grossing Domestic Movie for the weekend grossing a total of $136.1 million! Back in 2003, “Finding Nemo’s” opening weekend domestic gross was $70.2 million.

“Finding Dory” broke the box office record for the Opening Weekend Record for an Animated Film which was $121.6 million and previously held by “Shrek The Third”. The film also broke the animation record for the Largest Single Day and Opening Day amount with a domestic gross of $54.9 million.

Here is a list of the Highest Grossing Worldwide Movies of 2016 and as you can see “Captain America: Civil War” leads the way but both “Zootopia” and “The Jungle Book” are still chugging along. “Civil War” is now ranked as the 12th Highest Grossing Worldwide Movie Of All Time and “Zootopia” has just passed “The Dark Knight” to take the number 25 spot.xc cxc cxx c

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” Graces Cover Of Entertainment Weekly; New Character Photos & Bios!

000a3r54324-r2d2-ew1421

This weeks issue of Entertainment Weekly goes behind the scenes of the next Star Wars film to hit theaters this year, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”. The front cover above confirms in the headline that “DARTH VADER IS BACK!”

From EW:

Before Luke fired the blast that detonated the Death Star, before Leia launched R2-D2 to a remote desert world with secret plans for that battle station, someone had to locate and steal those schematics.

Turns out, it was a team effort.

In this week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly, we bring you an inside look at Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which explores just how the Rebellion came to possess the information that revealed the fatal flaw in the Empire’s super weapon. It’s a battlefield heist that fans have been imagining for nearly 40 years, described in the opening crawl of 1977’s original Star Wars, with little details scattered throughout.

And here are some new photos and character biographies for the cast of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”:

46488vrt445883000

Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones)

A streetwise delinquent who has been on her own since 15, she has fighting skills and a knowledge of the galactic underworld that the Rebel Alliance desperately needs. “She’s got a checkered past,” says Lucasfilm president and Rogue One producer Kathleen Kennedy. “She has been detained [by the Rebellion] and is being given an opportunity to be useful. And by being useful, it may commute her sentence… She’s a real survivor. She becomes a kind of Joan of Arc in the story.”

54158s4168000

Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna)

Andor is a by-the-book Rebel intelligence officer, brought in to steady the volatile Erso, but he’s no square. He’s committed, steady, and practical, and has seen more than his share of combat. “He conveys a fair amount of experience and the reality of what it’s like to do this every day, to try to figure out how to resist the Empire effectively and intelligently,” says Kiri Hart, Lucasfilm’s chief of story development. “It’s not easy.”

846515888554100

Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen)

Pronounced chi-RUT, he’s no Jedi, but he’s devoted to their ways and has used his spirituality to overcome his blindness and become a formidable warrior. “Chirrut falls into the category of being a warrior monk,” says Kennedy. “He very much still believes in everything the Jedi were about.” He maintains that belief even though the Jedi are no longer there to protect the galaxy. As director Gareth Edwards puts it: “This idea that magical beings are going to come and save us is going away, and it’s up to normal, everyday people to take a stand to stop evil from dominating the world.”

dg044484152999630

Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen)

Heavily armored, Baze prefers a blaster to hokey religions and ancient weapons, but he is devoted to protecting his friend Chirrut at all costs. “He understands Chirrut’s spiritual centeredness, but he doesn’t necessarily support it,” Kennedy says. Baze goes along with this Force business because “it’s what his friend deeply believes,” she adds. Think of them as a little like the galactic version of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza.

864531289888000

Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed)

Bodhi is this Rebel squad’s lead pilot. He tends to be hot-headed, but any abrasiveness is overshadowed by his skills in the air — and the void of space. “He flies a lot of cargo, one of his key jobs,” Kennedy says. “And he tends to be a little tense, a little volatile, but everybody in the group really relies on his technical skills.”

dg4515572999630

K-2SO (Alan Tudyk)

This towering, powerful security droid is described by Edwards as “the antithesis of C-3PO.” In other words, he’s tough, confident, not especially interested in “human/cyborg relations,” and the complete opposite of a neurotic fussbudget. “Kaytoo is a little bit like Chewbacca’s personality in a droid’s body,” Edwards says. “He doesn’t give a s— about what you think. He doesn’t fully check himself before he says things and does things. He just speaks the truth.” Like Jyn, he’s also seeking a bit of redemption for past wrongs. Droids, too, can have regret.

845882470000

Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen)

Jyn’s estranged father is like the galactic version of nuclear pioneer J. Robert Oppenheimer, with doomsday knowledge that is sought by both the Empire and the Rebellion. “He’s one of those people that has insight into you know specific aspects of just how the universe works,” says Hart. Where has Galen been, if Jyn has been on her own for years? “The circumstances of how the family got to the state that it’s in is something that we probably don’t want to share right now,” Hart says. (Lucasfilm isn’t revealing his image yet, so this is file picture. Don’t worry — the button-down isn’t retro galactic fashion.)

46488226693000

Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn)

On the opposing side, this villain is an ambitious Imperial apparatchik who intends to use his squad of Deathtroopers to pulverize the Rebel uprising and ascend into the Emperor’s graces – while hopefully avoiding the wrath of his enforcer, Darth Vader. “The bad guy is a lot more terrifying when he’s really smart, and really effective,” says Knoll. “There is a lot of palace intrigue going on in the Empire, with people conspiring to move up the ranks and sabotaging each other. There’s not a lot of loyalty there.”

46813520000

???? (Forest Whitaker)

This character has a past that Star Wars completists will recognize immediately when they see his name, even if he looks very different than the way they’ve seen him elsewhere. (He even looks different from when we saw him in the teaser trailer.) There’s so much to say about this character, we’re going to save his revelation for later today. Check back to EW.com around 2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PT for a deeper exploration of this shadowy figure …

OK. They are not revealing Forest Whitaker’s characters name. They say that “Star Wars” completists will recognize his name. Hmmmm. I think if it was someone that we would easily recognize they would have said Star Wars “fans”, not completists. So real diehard fans may recognize the name. But they also say that he looks different from what we are used to seeing him.

Saw_Gerrera

UPDATE: EW has revealed that the character that Forest Whittaker is playing is Saw Gerrera, who appeared in Season 5 of “The Clone Wars.”

RUMOR: Star Wars Battlefront Getting a Single Player Mode

A Reddit user by the name of uninspired_zebra managed to uncover a hidden menu in Star Wars Battlefront that included a mode called “Instant Action”. The menu was said to be discovered after the release of a recent update.

The mode’s description reads, “Enjoy epic battles offline by yourself or with a friend”.

The user posted a YouTube video which you can see below.

Whether or not the video is real is yet to be conformed, but it sure does look convincing.

Stay tuned for any updates!

Concept Images of Cancelled Disney Infinity Figures Surface

Over the past few weeks, a lot of cancelled ideas and concept art for Disney Infinity have begun to surface.

As reported by Kotaku, there was a ton of content in the works for the game, including new Play Sets, figures, and even some 12-inch premium figures that would offer some unique features.

Of course that news has been out for weeks now. Interestingly, now we are starting to get a look at what some of those characters may have looked like.

Most notable, the Dr. Strange figure has some impressive concept art up that appears to draw inspiration from the upcoming film.

maxresdefault

This would be an obvious choice seeing as the movie is slated for a November 2016 release. Too bad we’ll never get to try him out in Marvel Battlegrounds.

Another piece of concept art that has come out is the premium Hulk figure.

maxresdefault-1

This is believed to be the 12-inch figure that would launch with a special line-up of premium figures late this year. In addition to Hulk, we were also going to get a premium Hulkbuster, Elsa, and Jack Skellington.

Finally there is a character that would have really gotten Disney fans hyped.  Yes, a Peter Pan figure was in development, and as you can see below, he looked great!

PeterPan

It is really interesting to see all the content that could have been. Of course, we will keep you posted should any more information surface.

Reilly, who voiced Wreck It Ralph in the original movie, officially broke the news .

From Walt Disney Animation Studios:

WALT DISNEY ANIMATION STUDIOS WELCOMES “WRECK-IT RALPH” BACK TO THE BIG SCREEN FOR A SMASHING SEQUEL

Original Voice Cast Members John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman Set to Return

Ralph Wrecks the Mobile Game Disney Crossy Road in Celebration of the Announcement

Wreck-It Ralph is heading back to the big screen, and this time, he’s wrecking the internet. The Oscar®-nominated Walt Disney Animation Studios team from the original film is reteaming for the follow-up, including director Rich Moore (“Zootopia,” “The Simpsons”) and producer Clark Spencer (“Zootopia,” “Bolt”). Phil Johnston (writer, “Wreck-It Ralph,” “Zootopia,” “Cedar Rapids”) joins Moore as director and a writer on the project. John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman return as the bad-guy-turned-good, Ralph, and the girl with the game-winning glitch, Vanellope von Schweetz. The untitled sequel will hit theaters—literally—on March 9, 2018.

“From the moment we started working on the first ‘Wreck-It Ralph,’ we knew there were so many possibilities with these characters,” said Moore, who has been developing it since shortly after the release of the first film, and while directing this year’s critically-acclaimed hit “Zootopia” with Byron Howard. “This time, Ralph’s wrecking wreaks havoc on the Web—as only he can do. Characters we loved in the first film are back and we are ecstatic to be working with them—and the actors who voice them—once again.”

“The world of the internet is the perfect place to send Ralph and Vanellope,” said Johnston. “The scope and scale are so vast and the possibilities for comedy are endless.”

“Ralph is a character very near and dear to my heart,” added Reilly. “I’m really looking forward to playing the big lug again. Making the first ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ was one of the most special experiences I’ve ever had and I’m really looking forward to bringing him back to life. So many kids I’ve met all over the world are excited to see him again, too. They tell me all the time!”

When “Wreck-It Ralph” opened on Nov. 2, 2012, it turned in the highest opening weekend ever for a Walt Disney Animation Studios film at the time of release. Nominated for an Oscar® and Golden Globe® for best animated feature, “Wreck-It Ralph” won the PGA Award for outstanding producer of an animated theatrical motion picture as well as five Annie Awards, including best animated feature, director, cast and screenplay. The film was named best animated feature by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, earned outstanding achievement in casting for an animated feature by the Casting Society of America, and won the Kids’ Choice Award for favorite animated movie.

DISNEY CROSSY ROAD WRECKED

At 12 p.m. PT today, Disney’s hit mobile game, Disney Crossy Road, will be wrecked by Ralph in celebration of the announcement. As fans play through the 12 different Disney and Pixar worlds of Disney Crossy Road, Ralph may appear and ‘wreck’ part of their gameplay.

“Wreck-It Ralph has been one of the most popular worlds to play in Disney Crossy Road, so it made perfect sense to celebrate Ralph’s return by letting him go outside his world and ‘wreck’ other parts of the game,” said Chris Heatherly, SVP & GM, Disney Apps and Games. “We are big fans of the first film, as are our players, and can’t wait to see how the next chapter unfolds.”

“GIGANTIC” DATE-CHANGE

The animated feature “Gigantic,” originally announced as Disney’s March 9, 2018, release, will be released on November 21, 2018.

REVIEW: LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Note: I played through LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens in about eight hours. I played the standard version of the game on PlayStation 4. During my play through, I completed the story and unlocked a variety of items, and characters. This review reflects only my time spent during this play through.

header

The last time I played a Lego video game was back in 2009, when LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures was the most recent entry. Even then, I only played it because it came bundled with my Xbox 360. Suffice to say, I am not necessarily one to play Lego video game.

When I started up The Force Awakens, I expected to experience much of what the Lego games are known for: basic beat-’em-up combat, simple platforming, and a twist of cutesy satire. While I did find all of the above in this game, I also found so much more. The Lego games have changed a lot since I last played one, and for the better I might add.

Let’s start off  with visuals. The first thing I noticed when I got into the game was that it looked gorgeous! I couldn’t help but wonder why developer TT Fusion spent so much time making a game about toys look so good. Not only do the Legos looks fantastic, but the environments look almost as good as EA’s Star Wars Battlefront. The game’s visual style seems like a nod to those who played with Legos in their backyard growing up.13575848_10209774332497160_1232516512881568721_o

Audio wise, the game is a bit more divisive. While the music is spot on, with the inclusion of John Williams famous soundtrack, the voice acting is a little off putting. Not that it is bad by any means, the problem is that audio is pulled directly from the movie and put in the game. It just sounds a little strange seeing a Lego version of Rey sound exactly like Daisy Ridley. Perhaps its just me, but I preferred it when characters were mute in the Lego games. It gave the interactions and cutscenes a little more charm. However, it is a nice touch that TT Fusion even got some of the real cast of the film to record additional lines. They really went all out with this one. 13582065_10209774331457134_2142404366120453614_o

Now onto the gameplay. The game is split up into ten levels and even includes both a prologue and epilogue, so in some ways I suppose it has twelve levels. The story does a pretty good job sticking to the events of the film, but what really makes the story interesting is the addition of events that the film doesn’t cover. The game opens up with a 30 minute level that takes place at the end of Return of the Jedi. This level nicely ties the events of the original trilogy to The Force Awakens. Throughout the game, you’ll encounter little parts here and there that explain things like where Poe Dameron was after he got separated from Finn. It is fun to see the game explore events we didn’t get to see in the movie. 13528223_10209774332457159_6140509339398871452_o13495494_10209774330137101_758533087453380936_o

Like I mentioned early, A LOT has changed since I last played a Lego game. Star Wars: The Force Awakens adds a ton of new mechanics to the formula that help spice up the simple gameplay of previous entries. One thing is for sure with this game, I never felt like I was doing the same thing for too long. Each character has their own unique abilities that are used for puzzle solving. While puzzles are never challenging, they are still fun and rewarding.

One new mechanic that I didn’t find myself enjoying too much was the ability to use Lego scraps to build more than one object. I understand the puzzle element this mechanic is supposed to add but I always felt like these obstacles just broke up the otherwise smooth pacing of the levels.

However, there is another new mechanic that I absolutely adored. You can take cover behind structures and gameplay will suddenly turn into a cover based third-person shooter. These segments of levels were always entertaining and added some exciting set pieces to the game. 13558724_10209774331297130_5626193635904831000_o

The game’s excitement builds throughout the adventure. I was actually more enthusiastic about the game during the second half of my play through. I suppose this is a testimony to how varied and fresh the gameplay can be. Towards the end of the game, level types vary drastically. I especially enjoyed the X-Wing missions as Poe. They feel like a simplified version of a good Star Fox game. Flying is intuitive and easy, and offered a nice break from the focus of Rey and Finn’s adventure.

13522832_10209774329217078_3499771505667678157_o

My absolute favorite aspect of the game is the amount of fan service and humor put into the game. The banter between Stormtroopers is flat out hilarious, and I often found myself stopping in the middle of a level just to listen in on what they were saying. Characters and environments constantly make allusions to Star Wars related references that will have any fan laughing, or geeking out. It is very clear that the team at TT Fusion is full of Star Wars fans. Their enthusiasm and passion for the franchise shines through four the entire game.

13522942_10209774330257104_1707756895341381313_o

13528555_10209774328777067_4659183999801218642_o

As with any Lego game, expect tons of replay value. Each level is filled to the brim with puzzles and unlockables, some of which aren’t even accessible until Free Play mode is unlocked. The roster of characters includes everyone you can think of in the Star Wars universe, including Episode 7 director himself, J.J. Abrahms. Co-op couch play is a staple in the Lego games series that makes its return once again. There is a ton of content here for $60.

Overall, LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens packs a fantastic deal for fans. The gameplay is fresh and exciting for players of all-ages. The game looks, sounds (arguably), and feels great! Whether you’re playing by yourself, or with a buddy, LEGO: Star Wars: The Force Awakens has tons to offer and is one of the best Star Wars games in years.
