REVIEW: STK Orlando Opens in Disney Springs, Is Pleasure Island Now a Steakhouse?

STK Orlando opened its doors for dinner last night, taking the space once occupied by the Comedy Warehouse of Pleasure Island. The restaurant is situated just over the bridge between The Landing and The West Side, just across from what will be the home of the Edison next Spring. STK is a small chain of high-end steakhouses with a “lounge vibe”, with other locations in nightlife hot-spots such as Las Vegas, Miami, and New York. How does this fit in at Disney Springs?

IMG_6311

IMG_6312

The interior looks like something out of the New York nightlife scene.

IMG_6317

When STK claims to be a steakhouse with a lounge vibe, they are giving a pretty accurate description. The entire venue looks and feels like a lounge, but operates like a steakhouse. While the venue doesn’t really fit the Walt Disney World mold, the level of service and food quality made me just as comfortable as I would be dining at the Brown Derby or Jiko. The rooftop patio is wonderful and you could be seated upstairs as well, but we were seated on the lower floor.

Here’s a video of the views from the patio:

IMG_6318

I don’t know why, but I was expecting menu prices here to be above anything else at Disney Springs, but they are pretty much right on par with the nearby Boathouse and Morimoto Asia.

IMG_6320

However, it is a little disconcerting when a quality steakhouse offers sauces. Typically, an establishment of this caliber will not offer sauce as a true quality steak doesn’t need one and the sauce doesn’t allow you to taste the real flavor of the steak.

IMG_6321

A look at the cocktail menu, but there is also a full wine list available upon request.

   IMG_6322

     IMG_6327

I started my evening with the “Secret Affair”, which was good but not great. It wasn’t particularly strong or flavorful, just kind of forgettable honestly.

    IMG_6331

A number fo the people at our table ordered the Summertime Fling and everyone who had one enjoyed it immensely. I thought it was better than what I had ordered, but you can certainly find better $15 cocktails around Walt Disney World.

    IMG_6335

The “Not Your Daddy’s Manhattan” however, was just about perfect. I’m not really a Manhattan drinker, but I would most definitely order this on my next visit over the other drinks at our table.

  IMG_6337

  IMG_6344

This is the “Smokeshow”, which again is just somewhat forgettable. None of the drinks here really stood out. None of them were bad, but nothing really made me go “wow”.

IMG_6345

The bread service had a very distinct look to it, obviously with the bread coming in a skillet, but also coming with a strange green sauce which I spent a fair amount of the evening calling “Ecto Cooler” (look it up kids, it’s coming back next week).

  IMG_6347

The bread itself was great, very soft and with a great flavor to it.

    IMG_6351

I did begrudgingly put some sauce on it and the flavor was surprisingly normal. It had a nice blue cheese flavor.

IMG_6352

While the drinks were nothing special, food is where STK excels (as it should). The rock shrimp were very good, packing really good flavor into small package.

  IMG_6354

The Lil BRGs were my favorite. The wagyu beef was cooked just right, the bread was soft and flaky, and the toppings mixed in perfectly.

IMG_6355      IMG_6361

The grilled octopus was good as well, certainly better than the octopus dish I had tired at Morimoto Asia Street Food just days earlier.

   IMG_6365

The shrimp cocktail was also enjoyable as the shrimp were of a good quality and the cocktail sauce has an unexpected spicy/zesty kick to it.

IMG_6368

The burrata was a solid salad option, all of the ingredients tasted very fresh.

         IMG_6377

The Hearts of Romaine was fantastic. While I expected more of a Caesar salad flavor, it actually tasted similar to a Cobb Salad, much like the one served at the Brown Derby at Hollywood Studios.

     IMG_6382

The seared scallops appetizer isn’t very large, but it is very good. If you enjoy scallops, you can’t go wrong ordering this one.

  IMG_6384

Moving on to the entrees, the Florida Grouper was better than I expected, but the portions were not huge.

  IMG_6387  IMG_6389

But of course, the name of the restaurant is essentially steak, so the focus turns to these guys.  The first one up is the Bone-In Rib Steak. With the exception of the next steak up, the rest of them were exceptional. They were not the best cuts of these types of steaks I have ever had in my life, but they are pretty high up there. You would be hard-pressed to make a wrong decision ordering a cut of beef at this restaurant is basically what I’m trying to say.

    IMG_6395

The bone-in filet was may absolute favorite. I have had many a great filet at Walt Disney World, but this was the absolute best I have ever tasted in my entire life. Charred exterior, flavorful, perfectly cooked, it was everything I would have hoped it would be.

IMG_6396        IMG_6404

The 24oz Porterhouse is huge as one would expect, probably my second favorite of all we had ordered.

IMG_6432

Last but not least, the Skirt Steak, which was my least favorite, but still very good.

IMG_6409

We also ordered the chicken as it came highly recommended. Apparently the owner of the parent company of STK told the staff this was his favorite dish, which of course the staff could not believe as this is a steakhouse. After having tried it, I could definitely see why. While the steaks are more my style, this is a fantastic alternative.

      IMG_6415

The side dishes were a little small, but all of them were very good. First up, the mushrooms.

IMG_6417The macaroni and cheese was phenomenal. Some of the best I have ever had.

IMG_6423

IMG_6420

I’m not much of an asparagus fan, but these were also good.

IMG_6427

The one side that you absolutely must order is the sweet corn pudding. This is quite possibly my favorite side dish on the face of the earth. It is served warm, which might sound strange for what it is, but it is absolutely perfect.

               IMG_6442

No meal would be complete without dessert!

IMG_6443

The warm baked cookie was nothing new, but it was everything you could want it to be: a warm baked cookie topped with cold ice cream.

    IMG_6447  IMG_6449  IMG_6451

The “Bag O’ Donuts” was surprisingly unique in that the donuts were filled with caramel and the chocolate sauce was far superior to any I have had at other theme park establishments.

  IMG_6453  IMG_6455    IMG_6459

IMG_6460

The oddest choice had to be the trio of ice cream, but it was “hipster-y” enough to make sense in the setting of STK Orlando…

  IMG_6462

After an early preview of the restaurant on Tuesday, I was worried that Disney Springs had made their first real misstep (at least as far as dining) with STK Orlando. However, after dining there last night, I stand corrected. Now, I’m still not sure how I feel about the club atmosphere in the later hours, but in our time there from 5pm-8pm, the music did get progressively louder, but the experience and service provided by the wait staff was phenomenal and made everyone feel comfortable. If you like loud music and a club atmosphere along with amazing food, this is where you want to be after 8:00 at night on your Walt Disney World vacation (that being said, the music choices were not all modern as there was nice mixture of music from the 1950’s to now). Otherwise, get here at 5pm and get ready for a phenomenal dining experience (or take part in lunch service which starts next month). STK Orlando, as much as I want to dislike it for the interior design and the nighttime vibe, is yet another invaluable addition to Disney Springs and will give The Boathouse a solid run-for-its-money over the months and years to come.

I would be curious to return at a later hour next time just to see if it resembles more of a Pleasure Island dance club than a steakhouse, but we shall have to wait and see on that…

If you’re looking to drop about $75-125 a person on a quality dining experience, this is probably one of if not your best option at Walt Disney World.

REVIEW, PHOTOS, VIDEO: Nomad Lounge & Tiffins Restaurant Soft Open at Animal Kingdom

Disney’s Animal Kingdom has always been a park in need of more table service dining. From the time when the park opened in 1998, the options have been very limited, in fact, at one point in time, your only options were the Rainforest Cafe and a character buffet breakfast in Dinoland. Even with the addition of Yak and Yeti in 2008 and the conversion of Tusker House to a buffet, the options still seemed limited and the park did not feature a fine dining (or signature) establishment. Fast forward to the advent of the expansion of Disney’s Animal Kingdom and the park finally is slated to add an entirely new land, a nighttime attraction and entertainment lineup, new counter service establishments, and of course, Tiffins Restaurant and the Nomad Lounge.

IMG_6502

IMG_6493

Tiffins marks an important moment in the park’s history. Tomorrow will see the park boast its very first late night closure without Extra Magic Hours, what could be a daily occurrence from now on permanently regardless what nighttime show is running. Adding a signature venue where guests can drink and dine for a few hours adds a nice chunk more to a day at the park, and with the level of quality and service at Tiffins and the Nomad Lounge, you will certainly be spending at least an hour dining here if you choose to do so.

IMG_6509

Of course, we have reservations to dine at Tiffins on its very first day of operation on Friday and once again on Saturday to experience the Jungle Book: Alive with Magic package, but when I heard there would be a soft opening today, I jumped at the opportunity to take our very first look inside the new restaurant and to try the Nomad Lounge area which boasts a unique menu of food and drink from the main restaurant.

IMG_6492

Before we get too far into this, you MUST see the interior of this restaurant. It is absolutely one of the most gorgeous restaurants in all of Walt Disney World. If you are like me, which if you are reading this I assume you are, you are fascinated by theme park design, and that’s what this restaurant is all about: the journeys and the hard work that went into creating Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Here’s a video walkthrough of both eh restaurant and lounge:

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjlByfiGJIA?rel=0]

Nomad lounge is placed in the midst of Tiffins, along the path from Discovery Island to Pandora: The World of AVATAR. This was done so Nomad would have waterfront patio seating and a circular bay of windows around the interior seating and bar area. Being a lounge, you do not need and can not make reservations to dine here, unlike Tiffins.

IMG_6545

The specialty drink menu here is gigantic compared to many of the lounges on property, at least in variety of drink only offered at this establishment. There are even drinks only available at the Nomad Lounge that will not be served to dining tables at Tiffins.

IMG_6584

IMG_6585

The drink menu can be a bit overwhelming, but the staff at Nomad Lounge is impeccable. All of the recommendations and the guide through the menu we received were second to none. Also, I’m a sucker for themed coasters…

I’m no fan of mint drinks, but if you are, the Snow Leopard’s Salvation is the drink for you.

The Boto-Rita was fine, not really my thing, but pretty good.

I’m a really big fan of the ubiquitous Jungle Juice, so when I tried two drinks here that tasted like alcoholic versions of the Animal Kingdom favorite, I was quite happy. The first of which was the Leaping Lizard, which also has a pineapple decorative piece meant to  look like a lizard’s head…

My personal favorite was the Night Monkey, which just might be may favorite drink in all of WDW.

The Kungaloosh Spiced Excursion Ale is a nod to the former Adventurer’s Club at Pleasure Island and a really fine dark beer that I will certainly be ordering again. You may yell at me, but this is honestly the first thing ever having to do with the club that I’m happy about…

The Lamu Libation was my second favorite drink that we tried. It was perfectly sweet and had a great flavor to it. I will be ordering this again for sure.

The Temping Tigress was also enjoyable, even though I hate bourbon, I would not turn this down if it were offered to me again. This is probably the highest honor I can give to any bourbon drink I’ve ever had in my life.

The lounge also has a number of non-alcoholic options, of which we tried the Hibiscus Henna. The lounge offers a number of the alcoholic drinks without alcohol under different names, which is a nice offering.

Nomad Lounge also offers a small menu of exclusive bites, which of course we had to try.

IMG_6560

The vegetarian summer roll was surprisingly good. This is not necessarily something I would usually order anywhere, but the spicy sauce accompanying the roll made this quite enjoyable.

IMG_6659

The Indian Butter Chicken Wings were a bit of a letdown. The flavor just wasn’t there on these, which is somewhat disconcerting as this was the item I was most looking forward to. Luckily, we were so wowed by this point by the atmosphere and drinks that this don’t ruin our experience.

IMG_6620

The seasonal fish balls were one of my favorite dishes here, even though I had zero expectations they would even be on my radar when eating here. The pepper accompaniment blended well with the perfectly cooked white fish for a great flavor.

IMG_6629

The seared wagyu beef was by far the worst item we tried. No flavor and quite expensive for just three small pieces.

IMG_6625

The pork ribs were the real winner here. Again, while a small portion, the lime accented flavor and fall-off-the-bone quality were worth every penny. Unlike some other lounges on property, the portions here may be good for 1-2 guests, but that’s about it. This is a lounge attached to a signature dining venue, so it isn’t shocking, but could be better.

IMG_6624

One last item that is not featured on the menu is the bread service. Similar to Sanaa, this plate features a sampling of bread with dipping sauces. However, this plate here offered unique breads and dipping sauces, including a spicy yogurt sauce which was my favorite. I highly recommend ordering this on your next visit to the lounge.

IMG_6635

IMG_6638

IMG_6641

IMG_6640

For dessert, the lounge offers an exclusive “Taste of Tiffins” which has minute samplings of three of the larger desserts in one small plate. This was really fantastic, and gets a review pretty much like Amorette’s pastries; it’s very small but makes us for it and taste and quality of the presentation.

IMG_6655

IMG_6658

Nomad Lounge and Tiffins are not yet accepting any sort of discounts, as to be expected at this point from a new dining establishment at Walt Disney World.

IMG_6551

Overall, Tiffins is a gorgeous restaurant and definitely the signature restaurant that Animal Kingdom deserves, design wise at least. We’ll bring you a full review of Tiffins in the days ahead, but the interior is a beautiful love-letter to the attention to details and amazing journeys that Imagineers made to make Disney’s Animal Kingdom happen. The interior is jaw-dropping.

IMG_6534

IMG_6540

IMG_6523

IMG_6557

Note that they were not yet allowing guests to purchase the customizable tags to hang over the bar, but when they do, $0.85 of your dollar (which is the minimum donation) will go to the Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund.

Nomad Lounge is just a beautiful as the rest, both inside and out. The music is relaxing, yet vibrant and the patio is just as serene as it is in the main bar area.

IMG_6591

IMG_6594

The food menu is really solid and may even improve as the days progress (our server was surprised to hear we did not like the wagyu beef). The drink menu might be second to none quite honestly. I can’t think of a specialty drink menu at Walt Disney World where I would have a more difficult time picking a beverage. There is a lot on this drink menu and a lot of it is absolutely phenomenal. Nomad Lounge will without a doubt will be a regular drink destination for us, and the bread service and ribs will likely be on the must-order short list overtime we visit. The atmosphere alone is worth your money, never mind anything they will serve you. Kudos to all involved in the creation of Animal Kingdom’s latest masterpiece.

Hostess with the Mostess – Top 5 Counter Service at Magic Kingdom

Hostess Logo

As a Disney fanatic, talking about all things Disney is one of my favorite things to do. I’m sure the majority of you can totally relate. Not only do I love to talk about Disney, but I also love sharing my park tips and helping everyone with their Disney planning and questions. I am your WDWNT Hostess with the Mostess.

I am very excited to announce that I will be posting weekly and talking about my favorite Disney attractions, restaurants, foods, shows, characters, etc! But the fun doesn’t stop there! I want to hear from YOU! Sure, it’s really fun to talk about what I like, but it’s more fun to hear about what you like! At the end of my posts, I will have a poll where you can vote for your “Disney favorite” on that topic. Then, the next week I will post what you voted for! I’m so excited to share my love of Disney with you and to see what all of you other Disney fanatics think.

Picking my first topic was not easy. There is so much to talk about and I really wanted the first post to be simple and fun. I chose my Top 5 Favorite Quick Service Locations in the Magic Kingdom. Simple right? I was wrong! I thought it would be easy since there are just so many great places to eat. But that was the problem! Let’s just say it took some time for me to decide.

So after a lot of thought and consideration on food and theming, here are my Top 5 Favorite Quick Service Locations in the Magic Kingdom.

Gaston's Tavern5. Gaston’s Tavern

Gaston’s Tavern is my number five pick for, you guessed it … cinnamon rolls and LeFou’s Brew! The warm and gooey goodness of those giant cinnamon rolls paired with the marshmellowy mango amazingness of LeFou’s Brew cannot be beat. It’s just a little taste of heaven! And on top of those scrumptious snacks, the theme is what really brings this Tavern to the top five. Gaston did not embellish when he said he used antlers in all of his decorating. Complete with Gaston’s chair (perfect picture opportunity) you feel right at home in this poor provincial town.

Casey's Corner4. Casey’s Corner

Casey’s Corner made it to number four on my list. It might have made number three if it wasn’t for the terrible cheese sauce debacle of 2015. For those of you who don’t know, they had amazing cheese sauce that you could add yourself right onto your hot dog or even your fries. And in 2015, they took it away. Sad day for Disney fans everywhere. But, let’s get back to why I still love this place! The hot dogs are delicious. Every single one of them. Even with all of the great options, I still prefer the plain hotdog where I can add my own condiments (unfortunately no cheese sauce) and sauerkraut. And there is nothing like eating your hotdog on Main Street U.S.A while listening to the famous and dearly loved ragtime pianist Jim.

Peco's Bill3. Pecos Bill’s

I love Pecos Bill’s! There was no doubt in my mind that it would make my top five and here it is at number three. I have a lot of family members that miss the old menu. Yes, the hamburgers and the topping bar were great, but the food they have now is even better! The menu’s Southwest-Mexican vibe is a better fit for The Tall Tale Inn’s theme and the food is so delicious. I could eat the Southwest Chicken Salad with the Chipotle Ranch sauce everyday … yes, I mean it, everyday. With my salad stacked with toppings from the new topping bar, I go and grab a table in my favorite room (the left side seating area with the hanging lanterns) and enjoy my meal with my fellow cowpoke before riding off into the sunset.

Columbia Harbour House2. Columbia Harbour House

Columbia Harbour House is where it’s at! Why did I chose this seafood eatery for my number two? Not only is the food super yummy, the nautical theming is very impressive. Let’s start with the food. Every meal I have eaten there has been consistently delicious. If you have not tried their coleslaw, you are missing out. And the cobbler is to die for!  My mouth is watering just thinking about it! While you enjoy your fish, you can take in the seafaring sights. There are maps and nautical artifacts everywhere. This place was well thought out. As you walk through the restaurant it seems each section is dedicated to a certain ship. But my favorite part is one area in particular. Upstairs there is a window that looks right out to the Haunted Mansion. It’s my favorite place to sit because the area is upstairs away from the crowds and it’s very quaint. During one of my visits, I was sitting there enjoying my battered fish looking out at the Haunted Mansion when I noticed that all of the maps and artifacts in that section were dedicated to lost and ghost ships. Is that by chance? I think not!

Be Our Guest1. Be Our Guest

This was a tough call. Columbia Harbour House is so amazing it almost tied for number one. But in the end, Be Our Guest is my number one pick. The menu is unique and everything I have ordered so far has been very tasty. Especially the Carved Turkey Sandwich and the French Onion Soup. Both are so good! And of course, you need to try the grey stuff, it’s delicious! You had to have seen that comment coming. 😉 But what this really boils down to is the overall ambiance. From the moment you step foot onto the castle bridge you are transported right into the movie. I love all three rooms inside because each one has it’s own special touch. But the ballroom does have a special place in the my heart. It’s just so beautiful. With Cast Members bringing the food to your table, the feeling that Beast or Belle could come around the corner any moment, and the overall Imagineering details, Be Our Guest is nothing less than magical.

Those are my Top 5 Favorite Quick Service Locations in the Magic Kingdom. Now I want to hear from you! The poll is below and don’t be shy to comment. I might even share your comment when I post the results next week. If you have another favorite restaurant that is not on the poll, please comment. I will include all comment votes in with the poll results next week. I can’t wait to see what all of you pick!

Before I go, I will be sharing an Extra Magic Tip after every post. What kind of Hostess would I be if I didn’t share tips and interesting facts?

Here is my Extra Magic Tip for this week: When a quick service restaurant has more than one service line, don’t just pick the first one you see. Check out the line furthest away from the entrance. I know from experience, it’s usually the shortest wait!

I’ll be back next week to share your results!

VIDEO: ‘Inside Disney Parks’ -EXTRA: ‘The Jungle Book: Alive with Magic’

From the Disney Parks Blog:

In just hours, our all-new live entertainment experience, “The Jungle Book: Alive with Magic” nighttime show, begins its limited engagement run at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. But before it all begins, we’re sharing a first-ever EXTRA episode of the “Inside Disney Parks” newscast featuring the first footage of this spectacular new show.

We’ll be sharing more amazing video and details of “The Jungle Book: Alive with Magic” in the next full episode of “Inside Disney Parks,” so be sure to keep an eye on the Disney Parks Blog.

REVIEW: “Jungle Book – Alive With Magic” Disappoints, Big Problems Lie Ahead

When Rivers of Light at Disney’s Animal Kingdom was indefinitely delayed (at least until the Fall at this point), Walt Disney World found themselves in a tremendous predicament. They had announced there would be a brand new nighttime show for the park, in fact its very first, and developed an entire nighttime entertainment roster around it. So, when the headlining act goes down, what do you do?

"Rivers of Light,"the majestic nighttime jewel, coming to Disney's Animal Kingdom creates an illuminating musical experience for guests. Currently in development with a premiere date to be announced soon, "Rivers of Light" will celebrate the magic of animals, humans and the natural world with a blend of performers, floating lanterns and theatrical animal imagery. (David Roark, photographer)

If it were a concert, I’m sure you realize that the opening act is no real replacement for the headliner, but maybe someone can fill in? That’s essentially what happened here. Rather than give up on the Summer, Walt Disney World realized they had a perfectly good, new nighttime show venue in the Discovery River Theater and still had a tremendous line-up including nighttime safaris, Tree of Life Awakenings, a brand new signature restaurant, and lots of atmospheric entertainment. Why not put something temporarily in the theater as a replacement offering? The park’s first late-evenings would be saved and all of the dining packages and such Disney had their hearts on could still be sold. Could it be done in just 41 days?

In a little over a month, Walt Disney World and Disney Imagineers put together a show called The Jungle Book – Alive with Magic, which promised to use nighttime lighting effects created for Rivers of Light and blend them with some sort of live entertainment. In a short preview of Rivers of Light given to media back in April, we saw that many effects from that show could still operate, so maybe the working effects combined with good music and a solid entertainment act could create something worth seeing. I’m sure it could have, but that didn’t happen.

"The Jungle Book: Alive with Magic," a new live musical show inspired by the blockbuster live-action film "The Jungle Book," kicks off new nighttime experiences at Disney's Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The epic, limited-engagement celebration immerses guests in Indian culture with live performers, music, water screens and vibrant costumes amidst the beauty and danger of the jungle. (Preston Mack, photographer)

The best description I can give for this show is it is essentially Glow Fest on water. Glow Fest was a short-lived event at California Adventure which included a Bollywood-style dancing act on a stage in the evenings. Jungle Book – Alive with Magic was basically this act presented on barges with a half-functioning giant mist screen behind it. The show has music from The Jungle Book infused with an Indian influence playing as choreographed dance takes place on stages and barges (and even in the aisles) around the theater, but that’s pretty much all that happens. There are none of the “wow” moments of grandeur or technical effects that you would find in IllumiNations, Fantasmic, or even Wishes for that matter, something that has categorized every nighttime spectacular in the history of Disney Parks, even the worst ones.

Now, before I get any hate mail from anyone involved in this thing, let me talk about the positives (which surprisingly there are): the performers are very talented, the soundtrack is good, the live singing is a nice touch, and the choreography is enjoyable. This isn’t a bad show, it’s a bad show to put in this situation. If it was 4:00PM and I’m between FastPasses and I’m walking by this theater and this was performing during the day (with little to no advertisement other than a mention in the times guide perhaps), I would love to sit and watch this. As unscheduled atmospheric entertainment for this park, this show would be the absolute best they have to offer. However, it is being marketed as a nighttime spectacular, they are selling rushed merchandise for it, they are distributing FastPasses, and there is a very pricey dining package being offered.

Imagine if you bought a Fantasmic dining package and then went to the theater to find the Dapper Dans performing in the giant Hollywood Hills Amphitheater. Sure, Disney had added some fountains to the Dapper Dan’s show, but this isn’t worth what you spent on your dining package, no matter how much you might love this act. It isn’t a spectacle worth spending money to have reserved seating for. That’s the problem with Jungle Book – Alive with Magic; it isn’t worth a FastPass, it isn’t worth sitting there for any amount of time while you wait for it to start, and it for damn sure isn’t worth the price of an expensive dining package, even if they sit you on the barges in the river… OK, that might actually be kind of cool, but you get my point.

Tiffins is a spectacular restaurant (review to come) and I have no problem with the great buffet at Tusker House, but that isn’t going to resolve any cheated feelings guests are going to have walking out of this show. Last night alone, I encountered at least two dozen guests who were less-than-enchanted with what they had just waited an hour for, most of which were those with small children. I’ve sat with kids for an hour until Fantasmic! has started and that can be rough, but there is a payoff. Fantasmic is a wonderful spectacle and typically, watching a child take-in that 27-minutes of color and explosions is worth all of the stress and time-investment that you put into it, and that’s why people keep going back. At Jungle Book – Alive with Magic, children looked the same as I did: confused.

With the dining packages starting tonight, I am anxious to see what happens. I will be seated in that reserved dining viewing section as I have my reservation at Tiffins later today and I will give this show another chance to “wow” me, but based on my first viewing and the reviews of countless other who I asked about the show last night, I doubt very much that I will feel like I got my money’s worth out of that dining package, just as I felt like I had wasted time and a FastPass seeing this show last night. Standing in front of the Tree of Life and watching the awakenings projection shows would have been a far better investment of my time and energy. But I am anxious to witness the response of less-informed guests in that viewing area, who paid over $50 a person to see this show from a premium viewing area. There may very well be a riot (or at least a Light Magic style guest march to guest relations). These packages are being offered through September… is this going to continue to be offered through then if guests complain nightly in droves? I can’t imagine a scenario where wither the show or the package both continue to exist until then.

In short, this isn’t worth your time. Skip Jungle Book – Alive with Magic (but not Tiffins, you should still eat there regardless) and enjoy a nighttime safari, take in the splendor of the Tree of Life at night, or just ride Expedition Everest under the moonlight. Animal Kingdom is beautiful at night, don’t cancel your trip to the park just because of this show, just don’t make this show a priority unless you feel you absolutely must see it for some reason (like you really, really love this style of music and dancing).

IMG_6997

If you do want to still see it, all you need to really know is that FastPass seating enters on the Expedition Everest side while Standby is located on the Theater in the Wild side. I wouldn’t worry about showing up too early… Showtimes are nightly at 9:00PM and 10:30PM.

The clock is now ticking on Summer 2016 and I anxiously wait a debut date on Rivers of Light. It has to be better than this Discovery River Disaster…

VIDEO: “Tree of Life Awakenings” Steal the Show When Night Falls at Animal Kingdom

While The Jungle Book: Alive with Magic may not be a smash hit, there is one nighttime show at Disney’s Animal Kingdom that is now getting a standing ovation nightly: the Tree of Life Awakenings.

Disney's Animal Kingdom's iconic Tree of Life will undergo extraordinary ÒawakeningsÓ throughout each evening as the animal spirits are brought to life by magical fireflies that reveal colorful stories of wonder and enchantment. Projections of nature scenes take on a magical quality as they appear to dramatically emanate from within the Tree of Life. (David Roark, photographer)

This projection show takes place only on the very front of the Tree of Life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom after night falls and runs continuously until sometime after park close. The show is similar in technology to “The Magic, The Memories, and You!” and Celebrate the Magic presented at the Magic Kingdom, but that’s really where the similarities end.

This show doesn’t stop. The Tree is alive throughout the evening changing colors and coming to life with short silent vignettes and longer, music-filled segments. Some of the segments are absolutely amazing, such as this one that pays homage to a number of Disney animated films (and AVATAR):

Others are more on the artistic side (less IP driven), but present beautiful stories on the giant canvas of the Tree of Life:

The longer vignettes happen every 15-20 minutes or so, but there is always some sort of movement happening on the Tree of Life, from a slight animal move, to the presence of falling leaves or snow.

Everything about this show is pretty much perfect: the music, the imagery, and the use of technology effectively. If there is any reason to visit Disney’s Animal Kingdom at night, this is it.

Via Napoli at Epcot Adds New Menu Items In Celebration of Serving 1 Millionth Pizza

unspecified

Via Napoli at Epcot recently celebrated the serving of their 1 millionth pizza pie since the restaurant opened back in 2010. In celebration, the menu has undergone a minor shakeup, including the addition of some new signature pizza pies.

IMG_6098

They’re even offering a limited time pasta special – Truffled fettuccine carbonara with guanciale “italian Bacon” egg noodle and pecorino cheese.

IMG_6094

New Pizzas include Affumicata – White pizza, smoked salmon, arugula, pomodorini, and stracchino, as well as a Broccolini pie which includes fresh cherry tomatoes, mozzarella, porchetta robiola, and broccoli rabe.

These additions to the menu do not detract any offerings that have made the restaurant a hit at Epcot over the last 6 years, meaning guests have more than ever to choose between. MAybe you can even leave some room for dessert…

REVIEW: Tiffins Restaurant Provides Best In-Park Signature Dining; Jungle Book Package Value?; Every Plate Reviewed

Tiffins, the very first signature restaurant ever inside Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park opened recently, and rather then rush to a review, I decided to take a few visits here before summing up my thoughts on it. Of course, I did already present a review of the attached Nomad Lounge which you should check out, but I wanted to tackle the entire menu at Tiffins before letting you know what I thought. Let’s dive in…

IMG_6493

The restaurant is situated just behind Pizzafari, on what will eventually be the path to Pandora: The World of AVATAR.

IMG_6502

IMG_6503

IMG_6506

The attention to detail in the art around the restaurant and lounge is impeccable: everything you would expect from Disney’s animal Kingdom at this point.

IMG_6507

IMG_6509

IMG_6518

The restaurant is broken into four sections: The Nomad Lounge, Safari Gallery, Grand Gallery, and the Trek Gallery.

IMG_6896

OK, enough of that, let’s take a look at the menu…

IMG_6897

IMG_6898

IMG_6899

IMG_6900

There is a nice sized drink menu available as well, including a separate wine menu which I’ll highlight towards the end. Many of the specialty beverages are covered in our Nomad Lounge review.

IMG_6901

IMG_6902

IMG_6903

IMG_6904

IMG_7667

There is also an allergy friendly menu that is bound just as nicely.

IMG_7668

IMG_7669

IMG_7671

IMG_7673

IMG_7674

IMG_7675

Let’s begin with appetizers…

IMG_6925

The Lobster Popcorn Thai Curry Soup was my favorite appetizer. It is poured in front of you which is a nice touch.

IMG_6926

IMG_6927

IMG_6928

IMG_6940

So unique in presentation and flavor, possibly my favorite soup in all of Walt Disney World.

IMG_6941

Not heavy on lobster, but big on flavor.

IMG_6931

Black-Eyed Pea Fritters are a restaurant staff favorite and it’s easy to see why. They come with a green zhough sauce and a less spicy Peppadew Sauce which I suppose you can choose between. It’s not a lot, but I was really impressed with the flavor.

IMG_6933

The Salad of Roasted Baby Beets was solid, if you like beets I guess…

IMG_6936

The Marinated Grilled Octopus is an interesting dish. The octopus is cooked nicely and is very tender and blends well with the rest of the plate. One thing I love about all of the Tiffins menu items is the choice of sauces and accompaniments. It’s somewhat fun to try just the main portion, but then scoop some of the other items on the plate on to it to see what difference they make. A whole lot of thought went into every dish on this menu, and you can taste it.

The following two photos are provided by Josh of EasyWDW.com since my pictures of these two dishes didn’t turn out all that great…

jungle_book_dining_package-14

The Archaeologist Salad had my favorite presentation as the presence of crushed pumpernickel bread made it look like it had just been unearthed. A solid salad option, but nothing special for the price.

jungle_book_dining_package-13

Flash-fried Icy Blue Mussels are a must if you are a fan of mussels. These featured one of the unique flavor and texture combinations I’ve ever experienced on mussels and I look forward to trying these again.

IMG_6961

Josh and I both pretty much refused to try the House-made Head Cheese and Chicken Liver Pâté, so you’ll have to live with just the photo. That being said, the person in my

IMG_7068

Sustainable Seasonal Fish Crudo was surprisingly good. I’m not the biggest fan of raw fish, but I would order this again, especially with the Jungle Book dining package for maximum value.

IMG_6944

Another favorite of mine was the bread service. While not quite the draw it is at Sanaa, it’s nice to see this make it into the theme parks finally. While it may be disappointing compared to the sister-dish at Sanaa, I was rather happy with the sauce choices here: Harissa Yogurt, Lime Chutney, and Black-Eyed Pea Hummus (along with one more that was not listed in-menu).

IMG_6945

IMG_6947

Now, some of the sauces have changed since the restaurant opened, with the green sauce being toned down as some guests thought it was too spicy.

IMG_7664

Last night we received a yogurt-filled green sauce which lacked the kick of the older offering. However, our server informed us that the darker green, spicier sauce could still be requested since it is still made for use with another dish in the restaurant.

IMG_7071
If you don’t want to spend $10 on the bread service, there is a complimentary bread that is served with one of the sauces anyway, so you will get bread one way or the other.

Now, on to the entrees!

IMG_6951

The head-on shrimp from Skipper Canteen at the Magic Kingdom is one of my favorites, but Tiffins may have very well done it better. The sea urchin butter sauce has a taste straight out of the ocean, but it was additive good.

IMG_6956

the chermoula-rubbed Chicken is the ubiquitous chicken dish for those who aren’t as adventurous, but it wasn’t bad, just a little dry. Not something I would order here, but still fine.

IMG_6958

The Berkshire Pork Tenderloin was another solid entry. The “Huitlacoche Tamale” was really dry, but I enjoyed it. Overall a good portion and a worthwhile plate.

IMG_6960

The Pan-seared Duck Breast was a big letdown. Small portion and not nearly one of the better pieces of duck I’ve ever had. Stick to Morimoto Asia if you would like a duck dish worth this kind of money.

IMG_6964

The most expensive dish is the  is the $53 Wagyu Strip Loin and Braised Short Rib (served medium rare), and it is worth it. One of my favorite steak dishes at Walt Disney World an easily your best option on the Dining Plan or Dining Package. I wish the potatoes were better, but the tender and flavorful meat was good enough for me.

IMG_6966

I feel like I’ve said this about quite a few dishes lately, but the Roasted Market Vegetable Curry was one of the best vegetarian options on property. A whole lot of spice in this dish which is offset by the side dish.

IMG_6968

IMG_7074

I ordered the Whole-fried Sustainable Fish the second time at Tiffins just to get this picture really. I had never ordered a fish like this in my life and I decided the time had come to have a fish head on my plate. It’s a yellow snapper with fermented black bean sauce, som tam, and peanuts. You do have to work for your food here to cut it away from bone, but it is worth it for the flavor. If this seems like something you would enjoy, I highly recommend this. Probably my second favorite dish at Tiffins.

IMG_7075

I though ti might start signing “take me to the river” at some point…

IMG_7081

IMG_7079

The Berbere-spiced Lamb Chop was tender and cooked to perfection as well, a wonderful option if you love lamb-chops.

IMG_7692

I saved the best for last – The Hoisin-Glazed Halibut. This might be the best seafood dish I’ve ever had in my life. The forbidden rice is a perfect side, and anything that touches the Turmeric sauce is instantly enhanced. I would drink a cup of this sauce if it were provided, but it certainly helps that it was with the most perfectly cooked piece of white fish I’ve ever had. I’m currently plotting a return trip to Tiffins just to eat this again…

Now, to the dessert menu:

IMG_6974

IMG_6972

IMG_6973

IMG_7089

The Lime Cheesecake with Almond-Sesame Tuile and Green Tea Sponge was light, but flavorful. Probably a good choice after eating a full appetizer, bread, entree, and drink.

IMG_7091

The Passion Fruit Tapioca Créme was a multi-layered delight. Much better than I thought it would be.

IMG_7094

The Sorbet Tasting with Kaffir Lime Syrup, Passion Fruit Curd, and Crunchy Vanilla Crouton was OK, but confusing in that you select two flavors from four choices that aren’t even listed in the menu. I ordered passion fruit and jack-fruit flavors as they were the only two I even recognized as real flavors (and I only knew jack-fruit from Living with the Land). This was nothing special, but healthier than most of the others I guess. I wouldn’t recommend it.

IMG_7698

The South American Chocolate Ganache is my favorite of the desserts. It’s just perfect: rich chocolate tastes blend perfectly with all of the accompaniments, which also makes each bite of this dessert a little different from the last.

IMG_6985

The Calamansi Mousse is as beautiful as it is forgettable. I honestly don’t even remember a flavor (other than being dared to eat the flower).

IMG_6980

Coffee and teas are pressed tableside, providing roughly just over 2 cups. A nice touch.

IMG_6905

While we did not order any wine, here is the full wine list for you to peruse…

IMG_6913

In review, Tiffins is everything this park needed in a table service restaurant. The addition of a signature restaurant to the existing line-up was much needed (although I’m hoping for a lower-end table service addition to the park in Pandora next year). I appreciate that the theme and menu were not regurgitated from Jiko, and also that we truly have the first restaurant ever designed for designers. Who would have ever thought we would get a restaurant about Imagineers designing a theme park?

The menu has some really top notch offerings you really can’t find anywhere else (a few could use some work of course) and the drink menu might be the best from top to bottom of any location on property. Same as Skipper Canteen, I’m proud of Disney for letting the chefs create a menu like this for theme park consumption, and I feel like Tiffins will succeed where Skipper Canteen couldn’t being located in the Magic Kingdom.

As far as pricing, it is a signature restaurant, so the prices are as you expect. That being said, I felt like the prices here were slightly more reasonable than Brown Derby (which I would most closely equate as the only signature in a park of limited options). Of course, I always feel like Brown Derby is worth the price, but I think Tiffins boasts a stronger menu and may have been a better choice for a dining package should the show offered after it had been “Fantasmic!” and not Jungle Book: Alive with Magic. Let’s talk about that package…

IMG_7102

If you haven’t read my review of The Jungle Book: Alive with Magic, I think it’s a good preface to what I’m about to say. Now, leaving out that I’m apparently a “get off my lawn” type for not thinking the show is worth a dining package (according to another blog), I will say the value of the package really comes in your meal at Tiffins. Looking at Tiffins prices, there are many options that would leave you with a really tremendous value for your money. Lunch or dinner at Tiffins in the dining package is $67 for adults and $32 for children 9 years of age and younger (tax and gratuity not included) and includes your choice of appetizer, entrée, dessert and non-alcoholic beverage. Considering the combination of the most expensive entree and appetizer alone can cost $69.00, with the proper choices, you can end up saving a nice penny on a Tiffins meal, regardless of whether or not you see the show later.

IMG_7135

The viewing area location for the dining package is good, likely one of the best spots to see this show from (and hopefully Rivers of Light someday). So, the consensus the informal survey I took after the show of the guests around us was that Tiffins was worth the price of the package alone, even if the show wasn’t all that great, and I agree. Tiffins is worth visiting at Animal Kingdom regardless of any package, so why not save a few bucks and get a saved seat at this show? Even if you don’t go to the show, I think you will come out ahead.

Disney “Drops” Plans for Tower of Terror Themed Bar at Hollywood Studios

A few weeks ago, we told you about plans moving forward to add a Tower of Terror themed bar at the exit of the Hollywood Studios attraction sometime this summer. The desk had been cleared out, the CDS location had moved, and then suddenly thing stopped happening at the little desk situated between the photo desk and the Hollywood Tower Gifts shop. Well, it appears Disney pulled the plug on the project not too long ago.

twilight-zone-tower-of-terror-gallery00

Why cancel the addition of the bar? There was certainly a lot of good publicity for the project spurred by our article, in fact, it may be the first time I can ever recall posting a rumor to almost completely positive response by our readers. Well, it seems the merchandising team at the park wasn’t keen on a bar in the middle of their very profitable retail outfit at the exit of one of Walt Disney World’s most popular attractions.

In fact, this isn’t event the first time this happened recently. Food and Beverage was determined to have a location inside Star Wars Launch Bay, in fact, it’s mentioned in the original press release for the attraction, but when Launch Bay actually opened, all guests found was an abandoned false Cantina set footsteps away from a rather large Star Wars shop.

IMG_3586-1200x900

It came ever so close to happening…

So (for now), any hope of a bar at the Tower of Terror is dead, but, if I know the food and beverage department well enough, I’m sure they are looking at other nearby venues at the Tower of Terror to play host to this new bar concept.
