PHOTOS: Inspiration Behind Desserts for Satuli Canteen in Pandora – The World of AVATAR

As Pandora: The World of Avatar is only 32 days away from its official grand opening, Disney is putting the final touches on the land. As you know by now, Pandora will feature some out-of-this-world unique dining options to satisfy your hunger cravings. With those options will be specialty desserts available for purchase at both the Satuli Canteen and Pongu Pongu. At Satuli Canteen you can find the delicious Nav’i Blueberry Cheesecake, which is featured below.

 width=

According to the Disney Pastry chef who was behind this unique dessert, the inspiration came from the movie itself. In his words, he has said, “We watched ‘Avatar’ and noted that the Na’vi are in stellar shape – very lean, with beautiful skin and bright yellow eyes, so the Na’vi colors were the inspiration for the Blueberry Cheesecake with Passion Fruit Curd, a cream cheese and blueberry creation with passion fruit to connect to the film’s tropical environment. The cheesecake tastes as delicious as it looks, with a combination of acidity from the passion fruit with bold blueberry and creamy cheesecake.”

Another delicious dessert you can expect to find at Satuli is the Chocolate Cake (and yes that is what it is called).

 width=

The Chocolate Cake as described on the menu is a Chocolate Cake with a Crunchy Cookie Layer and Banana Cream Topping. The same pastry chef who created the blueberry cheesecake created this one as well.

“We used dark chocolate because it’s rich in antioxidants, then add a little crunch with a cookie wafer and the contrast of creamy mousse. The cake is topped with banana cream, made with a few simple (but delicious) ingredients: cream, white chocolate, and bananas, with a little drizzle of lemon. The chocolate-banana is a great flavor combination. Then we added goji berry on top – it tastes a little like a raisin, and we hydrated it with simple syrup. The taste of the goji berry with the banana cream and chocolate is a lovely balance of flavors. We created this as inspiration from what the ‘Healthy Nav’i would eat.”

These 2 desserts are meant to be savored and not meant to be quickly eaten.

If you are looking forward to trying out these 2 delicious desserts from Pandora, the wait is almost over as the opening day is only 32 days away! Pandora: The World of Avatar opens May 27th, at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Single Rider Line for Expedition Everest Closing for Refurbishment

For those of you who love to take advantage of the single rider lines for select attractions at Disney to avoid long lines, I’m sorry to say, but for a time you will not be able to do that for Expedition Everest.

 width=

Expedition Everest’s single rider queue will be closed starting tomorrow, April 26th, and will not open back up until May 16. Lone riders will have to use the standby or FastPass queues during this period. The reason for this closing is reportedly a rerouting of the current single rider queue to make it flow better.

The six chosen for the attraction are the perfect mix of fun and funky and help make each ride on the thrilling attraction a truly unique experience. Check out the “playlist” below and let us know which song you’re most excited to hear during your first ride on Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!

PHOTOS: First Look at All of the Merchandise for Pandora – The World of AVATAR

As the opening of Pandora: The World of Avatar is officially only 1 month away from today, Disney today released some new photos of the items guests will find for sale on the alien planet.

 width=

The merchandise above is inspired by the land itself. It incorporates the beauty of the bioluminescence you can expect to see at night.

The painting used on the merchandise was created by Dylan Cole, Co-Production Designer for the upcoming “Avatar” movie sequels. In it, he captured the bioluminescent world of Pandora at night with two new pieces. One image was inspired by the Na’vi River Journey, while the other pictures the beautiful Valley of Mo’ara. In addition to being available as prints, elements from his nighttime artwork were added to the apparel, home décor, accessories and other products. More of Dylan’s work is found on the Countdown to Pandora pin collection that was released this spring.

 width=

The cave painting art above was based on sketches by Walt Disney Imagineer Joe Rohde for the Avatar Flight of Passage attraction.

 width=

This merchandise is based on the ‘Shaman of Songs’ who is in the Nav’i River Journey ride. The key importance was the connection the Shaman had to nature and Disney wanted items that represented that idea.

 width=

Finally, the art team at Disney created patch designs representing different experiences guests will have while visiting Pandora. In addition to other products, guests will find select patch designs in the Intergalactic Passport Kit from Alpha Centauri Expeditions. The kit includes a passport, three sticker pages, a button, and a photo ID badge. This item, along with the Na’vi Translator Device, are perfect for exploring Pandora.

You can expect to find all of these merchandise items and more at Wind Traders in Pandora: The World of Avatar when it opens May 27th at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Hostess with the Mostess – Top 5 Pirates of the Caribbean Results

 width=

On March 18th, we had a very special anniversary: Pirates of the Caribbean turned 50! To pay homage to this beloved ride, my top 5 favorite list honored all of those fun-loving pirates. If you missed it you can read it right here.

Now let’s see how you voted!

5. Whistling Pirate (Wilbur)

 width=

Wilbur hit the number five spot on your list too! As cool as he may be, he is apparently not a fan favorite earning very few votes. Did you know that he is based off of a janitor that used to work at what is now called Walt Disney Imagineering?

4. Pirate Auctioneer

 width=

This one really surprised me! I thought the Auctioneer would get a lot more votes. Great job to Gregory and Mike for getting the correct answer about the Auctioneer’s voice. Paul Frees who voiced the Auctioneer also provided his voice for The Ghost Host in the Haunted Mansion and Adventures Thru Inner Space. One of my favorite parts about this scene is just a small detail that usually gets lost in the auction action. One of the pirates shoots his gun hitting a sign. And what I love is that we actually hear the bullet hit the sign and it moves. It’s all in the details!

3. Pirate Hanging With The Pigs (Petey)

 width=

You voted Petey into the number three spot! Petey is just one great example of WDI Designer Marc Davis’ sight gags.  There are tons of these sight gags all through the ride. They are there to help set the scene and of course make us laugh. You have to ride this attraction more than once to see them all!

2. Pirate with Hairy Legs (Harry)

 width=

Harry beat out Petey by just two votes! It was a super close race! In the Magic Kingdom ride, a pegleg parrot used to sit above the doorway and greet guests. When they did the big renovation to add Jack Sparrow they removed the parrot and gave him a new home next to none other than Harry!

1. Jack Sparrow

 width=

I am not surprised that Captain Jack got the most votes and plunged into number one! rebeccamck said, “Jack Sparrow is the main reason my kid will ride POTC, and we have fun counting his appearances throughout the ride … ”

Dawn said, “I remember the Sunday night Wonderful World of Disney episode where Walt himself shared his excitement about this new ride. Adding Jack Sparrow surprised me the first time. He was so realistic that we debated for awhile whether it was actually an actor and temporary until he appeared multiple times …” I love reading your comments. Thank you for sharing your memories and what you love about the ride!

In case you missed them on the 50 Fun Facts post, here are some of my favorite facts about Pirates of the Caribbean.

– Pirates of the Caribbean at the Disneyland Resort was the very last ride Walt personally oversaw before he dies in December 1966.

– The Disneyland version of Pirates of the Caribbean actually used to have real human bones… yep human bones. They did eventually take them all out, however to this day, it is rumored there is one human skull left in the ride but has not been confirmed.

– While riding the Disneyland version, pay very close attention to the voice of the Auctioneer. He may sound familiar… maybe too familiar? The reason he sounds so familiar is that the voice of the Auctioneer for the audio-animatronic is actually the voice of the beloved ‘Ghost Host.’ Not only that, he voices the ‘Dead Men Tell No Tales’ line as well as many other pirates in the ride! The person behind these voices is the one and only Paul Frees.

– To create the ‘fire’ in the attraction, cloth, lights, and fans are all used. In fact, the Anaheim Fire Chief almost shut down the ride at one point for thinking it was real fire!

– X Atencio and George Bruns were the Imagineers who composed the famous ‘Yo Ho, Yo Ho, a Pirates’ Life for Me!’

– At the beginning of the Magic Kingdom version, guests experience one big drop. This wasn’t done to add a thrill to the ride, although it does have that effect. The drop is there because Disney needed to move guests below the train tracks above. The drop couldn’t be any bigger though because of the high water table in that particular spot.

– In the Magic Kingdom version, enter the queue on the left-hand side and look for the tall gun cabinets. The cabinets have hidden Mickey-shaped locks. As you float past the Treasure Room at the end, there is a hidden Mickey on the lock in the middle of the open wooden door, as well as on the cabinet locks behind Captain Jack Sparrow.

– One of the scenes in the Florida queue area is of two skeletons playing chess in a dungeon cell. If you look closely, you might notice that no one will win this chess game; the pieces are arranged in a eternal stalemate.

Thanks for voting and commenting!

Here is my Extra Magic Tip: Beware of the water! If you have not been on the Walt Disney World Pirates of the Caribbean since they installed new boats last year then you are in for a surprise. The new boats take on much more water! So be sure to hide your cameras and cellphones before the drop.

REVIEW: “The Polite Pig” Preview Event Offers First Tastes and Sips of Disney Springs’ Newest Eatery

On Thursday, we were lucky enough to attend a “friends and family preview” event for The Polite Pig, the newest eatery at Disney Springs which is scheduled to officially open on April 10th. If you would like to read more about this location, please refer to our last story about the opening of the restaurant.

 width=

The Polite Pig is located in The Town Center section of Disney Springs, right next to the fountain that greets guests at the pedestrian entrance to the Lime Parking Garage.

 width=

Once through the doors, you are greeted by a prep station behind glass. The kitchen is also visible through windows in the main dining room.

 width=

 width=

Behind the bank of registers is a wall of taps. If you are not comfortable with establishments that serve alcohol, you may want to stop reading this review now…

 width=

The interior is themed as most Disney Springs eateries are: it was once something else (in story) and was converted into a restaurant. The Polite Pig apparently used to be a Farmer’s Market.

 width=

The interior is nice, but many of these places at Disney Springs are starting to blend together. The Polite Pig almost feels like a combination of design elements from D-Luxe Burger, the Welcome Center and the restrooms around the area. The look is good enough, but is more of the same.

 width=

Upon ordering and paying, guests are given a pager and then can pick a table to dine at.

 width=

If you dine outside, you will have to put the device on one of these readers.

 width=

There is an indoor/outdoor bar area as well where guests will find the full alcohol menu available. The restaurant is a unique hybrid in that once you are seated, a server will come by to assist with anything you might need, including adding additional food or drink to your order. I don’t know of another counter service establishment at Disney World where you can do this. Of course, you could also sit at the bar or just get food and drink to go from here.

 width=

The Polite Pig Menu

 width=

The menu is fairly focused on barbecue as it offers sandwiches and assorted smoked entrees, but there are also interesting snacks, salads, and sides.

 width=

Seven (yeah, seven) sauces are available at the condiment bar, as well as spiced vinegar. Of course, there is also the highly touted bourbon menu featuring over 50 selections.

 width=

All of the four pictured here were good, but my favorite was the Signature Black Pepper (as I like a little spice). I look forward to trying the Fresno Hot Sauce and Hot Honey on my next visit.

 width=

 width=

If you purchase a fountain drink, a number of the usual offerings are available, but The Polite Pig also has its own Sweet and Unsweet Tea. The Blue Sky Root Beer is also available at Blaze Pizza, where it is often a guest favorite.

The Southern Pig ($12)

 width=

Pulled Pork, Apple Slaw, Mustard Sauce, and Duke’s Mayo

The Southern Pig is not your average pulled pork sandwich. The pork is actually “less pulled” than you might expect, left in large chucks heavily coated in the mustard sauce. The flavor is not what I was expecting, but was delicious nonetheless. The pork is tender and the bun is nice and crispy, working well with everything in-between.

 width=

Half Chicken ($15)

 width=

Half Chicken with a citrus rub served with Slaw, Texas Toast, and Choice of 1 Market Side.

This is a massive portion of chicken with a smokey flavoring that was as unique as it was delectable. Sure, you will have to put a little work in to get the meat off the bones, but it will be worth your time once you get the chicken into one of the fantastic sauces offered. The Texas Toast is pretty standard, but that isn’t a bad thing. It reminded me a lot of the toast offered at Sonny’s BBQ, a restaurant chain present here in Central Florida.

 width=

For $15, this giant chicken, a piece of Texas Toast, and a side are an insane value, at least for Walt Disney World… and I probably don’t have to tell you that it’s better than Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe or the ABC Commissary.

 width=

The absolute best thing we had at the restaurant was the BBQ Cauliflower with Paprika Sour Cream. The vegetable was cooked perfectly, mixed with surprisingly well paired granola clusters, and accented nicely with the sour cream. I can’t recommend this enough, and I am not a person who generally enjoys cauliflower.

Orange Blossom Honey Cake ($7, Yeah, $7)

 width=

The Honey Cake was a little off putting in the first taste, but once I was better prepared for it, I found myself really enjoying it. The thick frosting had a nice flavor which counteracted the strong citrus overload nicely. Well worth a try at $7 and big enough for at least two to share after entrees.

 width=

Cask & Larder Red Drum Amber Ale ($9)

 width=

A good 20 ounce beer for $9, I really enjoyed this Red Drum Amber Ale, exclusive to restaurants in this family chain. It’s a nice, light, refreshing beer in a hefty potion. I almost couldn’t finish it just because we ate so much, but it pairs nicely with the barbecue dishes.

Old Fashioned ($10)

 width=

The Old Fashioned tasted a bit watered down, but was enjoyable. I am curious to see what the quality is like once they start serving these in pitchers on Monday.

OVERALL

In review, I was thoroughly impressed with the food and drink quality at The Polite Pig, as well as the attempt to offer a more service-intensive experience at a counter service establishment. We’ll see how it works when Monday rolls around, but until then, I am impressed with what I have had already and am anticipating my next visit. The barbecue was on the same level as (if not better than) Homecomin’ Florida Kitchen, and comes at a much better price (especially on alcohol). In the fantastic run of counter service additions to Disney Springs, this is another viable dining option to throw into the mix next time you are debating what to eat at the former Downtown Disney.

We will offer another review once the restaurant officially opens.

PHOTOS: Tree of Life Awakenings Projection Show is Expanding to the Back of the Animal Kingdom Icon

Since debuting in May 2016, the Tree of Life Awakenings show at Disney’s Animal Kingdom has been a popular nighttime offering at the park, arguably the most positively received overall of the many additions. It appears as though the back of the Tree of Life was forgotten in the process as it was barely even lit in the evenings while these shows were going on over on the front side of the Tree. Well, that is about to change…

 width=

Behind the Tree of Life, along the pathway between Africa and Asia, several mounts have been installed which will eventually be home to the projectors for the backside of the Tree.

 width=

 width=

A nearby rock has been ripped open to accommodate the installation.

 width=

 width=

Disney has not commented on the additions to the back of the Tree of Life as of yet, and it is still unclear if the full shows will take place back there or if it will differ in some way from the Awakenings shows that take place on the front of the structure.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Preview Coming to Disney Parks

As the excitement builds for Disney’s next movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, starting April 21st, One Man’s Dream in Hollywood Studios  as well as Sunset Showcase Theater at California Adventure will be showcasing a brief 10 minute clip of the film. Not only that, but on all the Disney Cruise Line ships you can expect a preview of the movie on select sailings this summer.

Disney has also released some new movie posters for the upcoming film, which includes shots of the characters themselves.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales hits theaters May 26th, 2017.

Epcot Introducing Refillable World Showcase Souvenir Wine Glass This Weekend

Beginning Sunday, April 9, Guests will be able to purchase a souvenir refillable wine glass at the Weinkeller (Germany pavilion), La Bottega Italiana (Italy pavilion), and Les Vins de France (France pavilion) in World Showcase at Epcot. This acrylic glass, which retails for $5.00 including tax, can be refilled with a selection of still wines at any of the aforementioned locations. While the glass is a great souvenir to help Guests remember their Epcot visit, it also reduces the amount of plastic used in the park. In addition to being reusable, the glass is dishwasher safe.

 width=

For whatever reason, it does not appear that there will be cheaper pours for wines with the glass, at least for now.
