VIDEO: SpectacuLAB Debuts in Barren Wasteland of Innoventions at Epcot

The new SpectacuLAB show recently debuted inside of (what’s left of) Innoventions in Future World at Epcot, right across the way from the Colortopia exhibit. Check out a full recording of the show below:

SpectacuLAB is saved by a pretty interesting final third of the show, but otherwise is a fairly boring and poorly put together offering. The seating arrangement is terrible as well, with a seemingly endless number of even rows in the space, making it near impossible for anyone not in a middle-aisle seat to see any of it. Well, at least kids can sit on the floor, so they may end up taking something away from this thing.

SpectacuLAB is now performing daily at Epcot, but Innoventions is slated for demolition in the not-too-distant future.

New Auction Shows Where Disney is “Quietly” Liquidating Props from Your Favorite Extinct Attractions, Tower of Terror & More

In an upcoming auction, you will have the opportunity to own a recently-discarded piece of Disney theme park history from the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Big Thunder Ranch, or Disneyland’s 60th Diamond Celebration, but how did these pieces get into a third-party auction and why are cast members and park guests not getting in on the action?

Some key Tower of Terror props are going on auction soon

Some key Tower of Terror props are going on auction soon

In recent months and years, Disney has abruptly ended the D23 Expo auction, and noticeably limited the number of attraction props and such that are liquidated through Property Control and Cast Member Auctions at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. For whatever reason, Disney seems afraid to sell attraction props themselves.

This is becoming a growing issue as they have closed some truly beloved, classic attractions in recent memory, from Maelstrom, to the Universe of Energy, to the Great Movie Ride. Where do all the salvaged props from a closed theme park attraction go? Well, they go to a few places typically, as items can be claimed by Walt Disney Imagineering, the Walt Disney Archives, and then any remaining items can be taken by Property Control, most likely to be sold off at some point in time to cast members, or in rare circumstances, to guests or vendors. Sadly, in recent times, this hasn’t been happening.

On top of this, Disney has seemingly noticed that some secondary market avenues are bringing bigger bucks for these types of “one of a kind” prop items and they now want to get in on the action. Rather than sell these items directly to their cast members or guests as they have done in the past, sources within the Disneyland Resort have indicated that Disney is now consigning these larger, more prominent attraction props through the upcoming “Remembering Disneyland”  auction by Van Eaton Galleries to make more on them and to perhaps avoid backlash from guests and their employees for profiteering on such things. Disney already has taken a lot of flack from fans for closing Tower of Terror in California, so it may not be in their best interest to publicly auction props from the ride themselves. On top of that, Cast Member auctions aren’t exactly the best way to make money on a prop as most cast members aren’t really making a wage where they can afford to blow hundreds of dollars on a lighting fixture from the lobby of the Hollywood Tower Hotel.

Massive props from the California Tower of Terror, too big to "walk away"

Massive props from the California Tower of Terror, too big to “walk away”

 width=

In an interview we conducted on Friday, Mike Van Eaton of Van Eaton Galleries denied that Van Eaton auctions works with the Walt Disney Company in any way and stated that they do not sell items acquired directly from Disney, nor do they accept consignment items from them. It would be one heck of a coincidence that all of these Tower of Terror, Big Thunder Ranch, and Diamond Celebration props vanished from the resort and mysteriously landed in one big auction at the same time. Sources within the Disneyland Resort indicate it is likely much more than a coincidence. In our research for this piece, these items were never publicly sold by the Disneyland Resort at their property control facilities, through cast auctions, or anything of the sort. The props, especially those from Tower of Terror, are also far too large and iconic to have “walked away” during the conversion of the ride. They have simply been in storage since the props were removed, and now someone at Disney seems to have decided that a 3rd party auction is the best way to liquidate them for maximum profit and minimum backlash.

In addition to the aforementioned items, the upcoming auction includes over 800 lots of Disneyland memorabilia tracing the history of Disneyland from its opening in 1955 up to present day. The catalog features a number of rarely available items including fascinating internal company documents that cast a light on the decisions, processes, financials, and everything else you might have wondered about Disney theme park operations, as well as rare Disneyland artifacts including cast costumes, a nearly complete collection of Disneyland security badges from all eras, and props and signs from favorite attractions. As in past auctions, Van Eaton noted that they source these items from cast members and private collections of Disney memorabilia.

It is worth mentioning that, in the past, the Walt Disney Company has been very much against the resale of some cast member pieces, such as past and present security costuming and badges from the parks, as well as character costume pieces. In my time working with theme park collectibles, it was not uncommon for Disney to ask or demand that the sale of a security badge or character costume piece be halted due to safety concerns that someone could impersonate a park employee once by procuring one. Needless to say, it would be a pretty large ethical dilemma if Disney was consigning items in an auction catalog alongside these pieces.

While there is certainly some negativity surrounding how this is being handled, we are excited by the prospect of owning an actual piece of some of our favorite, recently-departed attractions, one way or another. What we are not sure of is why Disney has chosen to sell its own memorabilia through a third party. Surely a company of that size really would have no need to share any profits with anyone, right? Also, an advertised auction isn’t the best way to quietly sell off giant pieces of beloved theme park rides.

 width=

In recent times, Disney themselves have proven they can do it. Disney knows their customers and they haven’t been afraid of selling memorabilia to the public in the past. The Disney Cast Costume Collection of handbags proves that they’re not afraid to sell “artifacts” from the Parks, or even market them. On top of that, Disney has sold signs and memorabilia at Disney-run auctions, special events, and conventions for over twenty years. Hell, even Universal Orlando has an in-park retail location for the sale of props and signs (and it’s really wonderful, so kudos to them for such a great idea).

What do you think should be done with these pieces?

PHOTO: Guests Try to Climb Animal Kingdom’s Tree of Life at Walt Disney World

Coming out way via the Disney World subreddit, four guests were apparently trying to climb the Tree of Life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom over the weekend…

The above photo shows one of the guests in a place they are clearly not allowed to be, roughly one-third of the way up the park icon.

Luckily no one was injured and security got them to come down rather quickly. There has been no word on if there were any repercussions for the guests.

RUMOR: Every Epcot Pavilion Will Receive a “Gardens of Wonder” Display During Upcoming Park Expansion

Sure, the Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival has been giving guest floral and topiary displays for over 20 years now, but what if it was something you could experience daily at the park?

 width=

As part of the ongoing expansion project for Epcot, an idea being kicked around is the “Gardens of Wonder”, which would be a series of displays at each pavilion that would capture the essence of that pavilion (Future World and World Showcase alike) and feature a Disney character or characters connected to the theme. These floral and topiary displays would welcome guests to each experience.

For example, Wall-E and Eve in topiary form would welcome guests to Mission: Space, while Anna and Elsa would do so in Norway. The idea is that every pavilion in World Showcase and Future World would receive one of these small gardens. It does make some sense based on the amount of green we see in concept art for the further development of Future World, so natural displays like these will be a big part of the park going forward. However, it would be intriguing to see how these would be maintained all year long, as opposed to just during a 3-month festival.

This idea has not been approved as of yet, and some recent shakeups in the new creative direction of Epcot may lead to this idea getting scrapped, but only time will tell.

PHOTOS: First Look Inside The Edison, Pizza Ponte, Maria & Enzo’s, and Enzo’s Hideaway at Disney Springs

Disney has shared more details on The Edison, a lavish industrial Gothic-style destination for fine food, handcrafted cocktails and exciting nightlife that will be a future Disney Springs destination. More recently, three additional food and beverages venues – Maria & Enzo’s, Enzo’s Hideaway and Pizza Ponte – were added to the list of tenants inside of the complex.

 width=

The Edison will be a landmark restaurant, bar and lounge that is sure to become a go-to hotspot for Central Florida nightlife. The building, which originally served as the power plant for the growing town of Disney Springs, showcases remnants from its past life: keep an eye out for the Boiler Bar, with its dizzying electrical display panels, and the adjacent boilers, which are still classic centerpieces of any power plant. The décor includes a one-of-a-kind mural romanticizing the golden age of innovation and a larger-than-life, working clock tower that greets guests upon arrival.

 width=

 width=

By day, The Edison will welcome families with an amazing lunch menu. In the early evening, everyone is invited to dine, but as night sets in (around 10:00 p.m.), the location transforms to an adults-only scene for guests ages 21 and up, with a groundbreaking beverage menu, delectable dining and entertainment (including gravity-defying aerialists) unlike anything else at Disney Springs. Here, you’re invited to escape the everyday and experience the era of invention and imagination.

Adjacent to The Edison is a trifecta of Italian venues, located in what was once the Disney Springs Air Terminal, a majestic Art Deco structure that welcomed guests from across the globe to a world of sun, beauty and legendary hospitality. As the story goes, the air terminal was popular into the early 1930s, but travelers diminished as the years brought on more modern flying alternatives and larger destinations. Upon its closure, the building was purchased by an Italian immigrant couple named Maria & Enzo; the duo had previously run the small bakery in the terminal’s lobby.

 width=

Inspired by their shared love of food and travel, they opened Pizza Ponte with Sicilian-style pizza by the slice, made-to-order sandwiches and handmade Italian pastries. The success of this venue allowed Maria and Enzo to fulfill their ultimate dream to restore and transform the long-forgotten terminal to its former glory, giving it new life as a grand restaurant showcasing the flavors of Southern Italy.

 width=

Named after its founders, Maria & Enzo’s features vaulted ceilings, a geographically correct mural depicting the destinations once serviced by the terminal (New York, Daytona Beach, New Orleans and Cuba among them), and an impressive globe chandelier. (Insider Tip: Look closely and you can see that Disney-inspired locations are called out, including a marker that denotes Marceline, Missouri – the hometown of Walt Disney.) The main dining room pays homage to the original departure lounge while nearby, a more intimate dining room highlights its history as the first-class lounge with service standards that are second to none.

Steps away, the unexpected Enzo’s Hideaway offers a glimpse into another lounge – this one, a secret space that first served as a bootlegger’s hideout. A legendary speakeasy that was discovered by Enzo after he purchased the terminal, this network of tunnels was the center of the Springs’ social life during the “dry years” of prohibition. Look no further than the graffiti wall and you can begin to imagine the storied nightlife that took place here.

All four venues are expected to open within the next month and should be fully operational by early January, 2018.
