PHOTOS: New Intergalactic Treats Available at Star Wars Galactic Nights

Star Wars fans heading to Hollywood Studios for Star Wars: Galactic Nights on Dec. 16 will find some stellar new and returning food offerings intended to appeal to both foodies and Star Wars fans alike. The chefs at Hollywood Studios have crafted gourmet treats inspired by characters, locations and scenes from the beloved franchise.

 width=
There are three new dishes debuting at the event. The Shrimp and Chorizo Skewer, generously loaded with Chorizo sausage, potato hash and shrimp, is intended as a tribute to the hearty appetite of the Wookiees (and the apparent prevalence of shellfish on Kashyyyk).

 width=
Also new this year, Tatooine Bisque is a blend of rutabaga, turnips, carrots, and parsnips inspired by the sandstorms and moisture farms of Tatooine.

 width=
And if you found the garbage chute scene in Episode IV: A New Hope appetizing, you’ll want to check out the Sweet and Crunchy Popcorn, loaded with cookies, caramel, chocolate and pecans.

 width=
Returning favorites include the popular Lightsaber Churros. Blue and red sugar coat the Light Side and Dark Side options, both offered with a Lightsaber Hilt.

 width=
Or try both in the Lightsaber Churro Sundae, with pieces of both red and blue churro served on a base of vanilla ice cream and topped with chocolate sauce.

 width=
Quench your galactic thirst with the classic Jettison Juice (non-alcoholic watermelon lemonade) served with a Death Star Glow Cube. Adults can try the Skywalker Wine Flight, featuring four wine selections – Sommità, Chardonnay, Pinor Noir Rosé, and Sommità Pinot Noir – from Skywalker Vineyards in Marin County, California.

A full list of all of the food and beverage items to be offered at the event is available on the Star Wars: Galactic Nights website. And if you just can’t decide which galactic goodies you want to try, you can choose the Galactic Tasting Sampler for $30. Select five items from up to 25 food and beverage options (including alcohol). You can also use the sampler for any Disney Dining Plan Snack-eligible items through Hollywood Studios.

REVIEW: Magic Kingdom Copies Disneyland and Adds Hand-Dipped Corn Dogs, But Are They Just As Good?

If you are familiar with Disneyland, you undoubtedly know about the long lines for Corn Dogs that can be found on Main Street U.S.A. (and occasionally at the secondary location, the Corn Dog Castle at Disney California Adventure). If you only visit Walt Disney World, then you might be wondering why such lines exist, seeing as the corn dogs in Orlando are pretty terrible. Well, the difference between the two is that the dogs are hand-dipped at Disneyland and served fresh, not from frozen like their Walt Disney World counterparts. While the food trucks at Disney Springs have given us their take on this classic snack, the Magic Kingdom is finally trying out Hand-dipped Corn Dogs.

 width=

Sleepy Hollow Refreshments, already home to the beloved waffle sandwiches (including breakfast), funnel cakes, and ice cream cookie sandwiches, is now also the home for these new, fresh-made snacks.

 width=

The hand-dipped corn dog with house-made chips is $8.49, but you can get just the corn dog for $5.99 upon request.

 width=

In case you don’t believe that they are hand-dipping the corn dogs, here’s a peek into the kitchen. This item is fairly new, so they are still learning how to do this and it was quite evident. Many corn dogs came out fairly deformed in appearance and we ended up waiting quite a while for this to come out of the kitchen.

Hand-Dipped Corn Dog with House-Made Chips ($8.49)

 width=

Hand-Dipped Corn Dog with House-Made Chips ($8.49), Sleepy Hollow Refreshments at the Magic Kingdom

As you can see, our corn dog came out quite deformed, but it was also very good. While the Disneyland version is still superior, this was lightyears better than any other corn dog I’ve ever had in Orlando.

 width=

Hand-Dipped Corn Dog with House-Made Chips ($8.49), Sleepy Hollow Refreshments at the Magic Kingdom

Sure, the hot dog was peeking out and there was a strange “leg” coming out of it, but the flavor of the batter was good and the all-beef hot dog was great. The house made chips were tasty as always, making this a solid meal. Sadly, I still prefer the chicken and waffle sandwich, so this probably won’t sway me from my usual order, but it is nice to finally have real corn dogs here. Now, we just need them to start making the spicy link from Corn Dog Castle…

REVIEW: Cheshire Cat Tails & Cold Brew Coffee Magically Appear at Cheshire Cafe at the Magic Kingdom

Located steps away from The Mad Tea Party attraction in Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom, the Cheshire Cafe (formerly the Enchanted Grove) has always served a selection of coffee drinks, and from time to time, some pastry desserts as well. Starting recently, the menu at this counter service window location was updated with two new offerings.

 width=

Cold Brew Coffee and Cheshire Cat Tails, new at the Cheshire Cafe in the Magic Kingdom

Allow me to introduce those new items to you: Cold Brew Coffee and Cheshire Cat Tails!

 width=

Cold Brew Coffee and Cheshire Cat Tails, new at the Cheshire Cafe in the Magic Kingdom

 width=

Cheshire Cafe Menu, June 2017

The remainder of the Cheshire Cafe menu remains pretty much as it was, long gone are the themed cake Cups you may remember from a few years ago. Guests were really big on those, but I had never had much success with them.

Cheshire Cat Tail ($4.49)

 width=

Cheshire Cat Tail ($4.49), Cheshire Cafe at the Magic Kingdom

The Cheshire Cat Tail is very similar to the “chocolate twist” treat that you will most commonly find around Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park, available as Kusafiri Coffee Shop & Bakery and Thirsty River Bar & Trek Snacks. However, while I do enjoy the Animal Kingdom offering, this was far superior in every way.

 width=

The pastry was fresh, soft, and flaky, filled inside with chocolate chips and a cream filling. The colorful icing here added an extra sweetness which made this (most likely) the best theme park pastry I have ever eaten. If you acquire one of these as fresh as we did, you are in for a real treat. This is seriously my favorite snack in all of the Magic Kingdom as of right now.

 width=

Cold Brew Coffee ($3.79)

 width=

If you like Cold Brew Coffee, then you can now find it at the Magic Kingdom now at the Cheshire Cafe. I don’t know what else to say about this except that it was Cold Brew Coffee and it was what you would expect it to be. The picture above is of the drink as it is served, but cream and sugar and such are available just around the corner from the service window, so guests may make this beverage to their liking.

REVIEW: Amazing New Fort Wilderness RV Food Truck Isn’t Quite As Good As It Looks

Food trucks are all the rage at Walt Disney World these days, but I’m not sure there has ever been a cooler looking food truck than the vintage-style RV that’s now rolling around Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground…

 width=

The truck has a classic style, but also has some wonderful nods to the Walt Disney World of the 1970’s. It is located (currently) out by The Meadows and the recreation area. When we visited, it opened for business starting at 5PM.

 width=

The “earlobe” was the original logo icon of Walt Disney World, then referred to as the Vacation Kingdom of the World.

 width=

The level of detail is amazing, right down to the map sitting up in the driver’s area. Kids, ask your parents about a world before smart phones and GPS.

 width=

The classic Walt Disney World logo adorns the side, but there is also a map of the United States with decals for states visited. I’d love to know how they got to some states without visiting the ones in-between…

 width=

Many of the decals on the back are reproductions of the older bumper stickers sold at the resort. There are also references to Copper Creek and other places within Wilderness Lodge…

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

 width=

Let’s take a look at the menu…

 width=

 width=

There is also a selection of moonshine concoctions. Let’s try a few of the items out…

Fort Wilderness Smoked Pork Belly Tillamook Cheeseburger ($13.49)

 width=

This sounded amazing. It wasn’t. The ingredients were great, but it is the lower-quality Disney hamburger patties, not of a quality like D-Luxe Burger at Disney Springs. The Chipotle barbecue sauce, the onion ring, and the onion kaiser roll were great, but you can’t have a good burger without a good beef patty. The french fries are of the usual quality as well, which I feel hurts the dish.

 width=

Pumpkin Spiced Tea ($10.75)

 width=

This was terrible. It tasted like moonshine with a sugar-free pumpkin flavor syrup, which is what I assume goes into making this thing. In fairness, the other options have been good whenever I have had them at Trail’s End or Crokett’s Tavern at this resort, so maybe stick to the others, or just go to either of those locations.

OVERALL

I’d be happy to give the Fort Wilderness Fresh Fixin’s food truck another try, but they did not leave a good first impression. Design-wise, it is top notch and super cool. The level of detail and how well it fits its surroundings is exactly what you expect from Disney, but perhaps that sets an unobtainable expectation for the food and drink. Either way, the menu can always be fixed, and at least we got something really cool-looking out of it.

REVIEW: Turkey, Salmon, and Pimento-Cheese BLT Sandwiches Arrive at The Smiling Crocodile, Disney’s Animal Kingdom

The Smiling Crocodile food kiosk on Discovery Island at Disney’s Animal Kingdom recently introduced a new menu.

 width=

The former home of the wonderful smoky cheddar grits and the chicken drumstick is now serving up three varieties of “BLT Sandwiches”. Why did I put that in quotes? Because I’m still not sure that is how I would describe these dishes…

 width=

On the bright side, they are all snack credits on the Disney Dining Plan and sizable for such an offering.

 width=

Pictures of the three new dishes hang on the walls inside of the kiosk, just to assure that they turn out looking as they should.

 width=

With the proximity to the Flame Tree Barbecue seating area, there is always a nearby place to bring the food & drink from these stands and be able to sit in peace and quiet enjoying them.

 width=

If you don’t like birds, then you may want to go eat elsewhere. While we were taking these photos, several winged-creatures tried to eat the “sandwiches”. We probably should have let them in hindsight…

 width=

First off, I wouldn’t call them sandwiches, even if using the term “open-faced”. They are what you might refer to as tostadas: a crispy toast with a blend of cold toppings. With that out of the way, let’s try them.

Pimento-Cheese BLT ($5.29)

 width=

Open faced sandwich with hand-crafted pimento cheese, thick-cut, smoked, house-roasted bacon on ciabatta bread, topped with chives.

I wish I had some more positives other than these being sizable for snack credits, but there isn’t much else to say of a good nature. The bacon is too thick to bite and delivers almost none of the flavor you might expect for getting such a lengthy description on the menu. These aren’t terrible, but they aren’t something I would ever recommend to someone looking for a quick bite at Animal Kingdom.

Salmon BLT ($5.49)

 width=

Open faced smoked salmon sandwich made with thick-cut, smoked, house-roasted bacon on ciabatta bread.

The salmon quality isn’t bad, but the bread and other toppings do nothing to enhance that flavor. These are really hard to eat as the toppings simply do not stay on, often with most of the snack falling apart during your first bite. While these are meant to be a grab-and-go option, you will need to sit and eat these, otherwise the floor will be getting more of the food than you are.

Turkey BLT ($5.29)

 width=

Open faced turkey sandwich made with thick-cut, smoked, house-roasted bacon on ciabatta bread.

This was my favorite of the three, but that isn’t saying much. Again, the turkey is good, but the rest is nothing special. Despite not being advertised, the chives somehow ended up on this one as well.

OVERALL

I lament the loss of the really enjoyable cheddar grits here, especially with these offerings that simply pale in comparison. Hopefully these will be removed fairly quickly and replaced with something more enjoyable… or Disney can just bring back the cheese grits and we’ll pretend this whole thing never even happened…

Braised Short Rib with Parsnip Purée, Broccolini, Baby Tomatoes and Aged Balsamic – $7.50

 width=

This dish was pretty solid, offering a well-cooked short rib over a parsnip puree, which blended well. I don’t know why there is so much balsamic on everything at this festival, but this probably could have done without it. Not a great dish, not a bad dish, just kind of middle-of-the-road. Otherwise, it tasted home cooked and the vegetables were quite good.

Seared Red Snapper with braised Ratatouille and Lemon-Thyme Beurre Blanc (GF) – $7.50

 width=

There’s nothing too crazy about this Red Snapper dish, but it was really good and a nice-sized portion (a fairly thick piece of fish) for the price. I would probably order this again, but I’m often partial to the festival seafood dishes.

Port Wine Poached Pear, Vanilla Panna Cotta and Pistachio Crumbs (GF) – $6.00

 width=

The surprising winner here is this port wine poached pear. I honestly have maybe tried a pear once in my life, and I wasn’t crazy about it, but this pear was delicious. With the vanilla panna cotta and pistachio crumbs spread over it, you will be hard pressed to find a better non-chocolate treat at this event. You also get the entire pear with this dish, a rarity for an Epcot festival plate.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale – $4.00, Bell’s Two Hearted American-style India Pale Ale – $4.00, Duck Rabbit Milk Stout – $4.00, Beer Braising Flight – $9.00

 width=

According to Josh of EasyWDW.com, this is the best beer flight you can get at the event, and I would have to agree. I LOVED the Duck-Rabbit Milk Stout and I will be ordering that in a single serving for sure the next time I visit this booth. The Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and the Bell’s Two Hearted American-style Indian Pale Ale were also enjoyable if you like such drinks. If all three might be of interest to you, you absolutely can not go wrong by ordering this flight.

 width=

 width=

 width=

If you are like me and prefer a dark beer, the milk stout is the way to go.

REVIEW: Maple Popcorn Now Available at the Magic Kingdom

Tokyo Disneyland move over, because Walt Disney World is getting into the freshly-popped flavored popcorn game.

 width=

Maple Popcorn is now available at the cart adjacent to Westward Ho in Frontierland. You can buy a single serving, acquire it in a souvenir bucket, and even refill any refillable Walt Disney World popcorn bucket for just $1.50.

 width=

Of course I had to have some! So how was it? I LOVED IT!

 width=

It may look like caramel corn, but I enjoyed it much more than I do that. The coating is thinner, so it lacks the often plastic-like chewiness of caramel corn. The maple popcorn has a light maple syrup flavor which is just perfect (in my opinion). Yes sure to try it the next time you are at the park!

 width=

Hopefully more will be on the way (Epcot offers 3 flavors at the cart near Imagination), but this is a great start.

REVIEW: “The Artist’s Table” Food Studio – Epcot International Festival of the Arts 2017

Welcome to a food studio review for the Epcot International Festival of the Arts, taking place in the park Friday-Monday from January 13th through February 20th, 2017. This review will cover “The Artist’s Table” kiosk, which is located in The American Adventure pavilion in World Showcase.

REVIEW: "The Artist's Table" Food Studio - Epcot International Festival of the Arts 2017

Food:

  • Roasted Pork Roulade with Marble Potatoes, Baby Carrots and Red Wine Sauce featuring Melissa’s Produce – $6.50
  • Pan-Seared Scallop with Chorizo, Roasted Red Pepper Coulis and a Parmesan Crisp (GF) – $6.25
  • Artist Palette Jumbo Chocolate Chip Cookie – $5.50

Beverages:

  • Callebaut Belgian Sipping Chocolate Flight: White, Milk, Dark (non-alcoholic) – $8.00
  • Callebaut Belgian Sipping Chocolate: Dark Chocolate with Chambord – $9.75
  • Perla Santa Coffee-flavored Wine – $9.50
  • Dasani Bottled Water – $3.00

 width=

Roasted Pork Roulade with Marble Potatoes, Baby Carrots and Red Wine Sauce featuring Melissa’s Produce – $6.50

 width=

The roasted pork roulade ended up being one of my favorite non-dessert dishes from the festival so far. The pork is cooked perfectly, offering tender and juicy bites. The vegetables get some of the billing as they are from Melissa’s Produce, and they deservingly get this recognition as they are quite tasty. The portion size is also solid for the price and I thought that the two marble potatoes had a nice flavor.

Pan-Seared Scallop with Chorizo, Roasted Red Pepper Coulis and a Parmesan Crisp (GF) – $6.25

 width=

The scallop is very good, but also very small. I would order this gain, but it purely to enjoy the flavor for a brief moment before it is gone after two bites. Epcot often does a nice job cooking these, and the scallop dishes at each festival always end up being a favorite, so it is nice to know that this one does not deviate from the pattern. It does take a pretty picture though…

Artist Palette Jumbo Chocolate Chip Cookie – $5.50

 width=

I was thoroughly surprised by how good this cookie was, but also the time that went into making it is impressive. When we got the cookie, the “paint puddles” were not all dripping down the cookie, but carefully placed by a chef at the booth upon ordering. Every item at this festival requires some time to prepare for perfect presentation, and even this jumbo chocolate chip cookie is no exception. If you are in the mood for a chocolate chip cookie, this will hit the spot.

Perla Santa Coffee-flavored Wine – $9.50

REVIEW: "The Artist's Table" Food Studio - Epcot International Festival of the Arts 2017

I really enjoyed this coffee wine, although it is probably much like dozens of other drinks I have had at such events. It reminded me of many of the alcoholic coffee drinks that the various Joffrey’s booths around the park have sold at some of the other festivals (basically a coffee liqueur flavor), and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If you like coffee drinks, this is a fun option.

Callebaut Belgian Sipping Chocolate Flight: White, Milk, Dark (non-alcoholic) – $8.00

 width=

This trio of drinking chocolate is unbelievably rich in flavor and so much so that it felt like we were drinking chocolate syrup out of the bottle. While I have enjoyed versions of these drinks from Amorette’s Patisserie and Ghirardelli, I didn’t think that these were nearly as good. The portion sizes are large enough to share between 2-3 people (simply because I can’t imagine that anyone could possibly have more than a few sips of such a thick and rich chocolate flavor).

Callebaut Belgian Sipping Chocolate: Dark Chocolate with Chambord – $9.75

 width=

No, we didn’t take a few sips and then remember to take a picture… this is the entire serving. While either of these sipping chocolate options are more unique than the wine, I think they are way too rich. If I had to choose one, the alcoholic version was better. Again, it is a really, really small drink, but it is pretty good. It’s really your decision if you can feel alright with paying $9.75 for this.

REVIEW: “The Painter’s Palate” Food Studio – Epcot International Festival of the Arts 2017

Welcome to a food studio review for the Epcot International Festival of the Arts, taking place in the park Friday-Monday from January 13th through February 20th, 2017. This review will cover “The Painter’s Palate” kiosk, which is located in The Odyssey Festival Showplace.

  • Trio of Savory Croissant Doughnuts – $9.50

Trio of Savory Croissant Doughnuts – $9.50

 width=

  • Whipped Herb Cream Cheese with Sea Salt (V)
  • Chicken Mousse with Fresh Herbs & Everything Bagel Seasoning
  • Spicy Tuna with Sriracha Mayonnaise and Sesame Seeds

 width=

The trio of savory croissant doughnuts is perhaps the most interesting and unique item at the festival. The everything bagel seasoning seemed to end up on two of the three somehow, and I’m ok with that. The whipped herb cream cheese and spicy tuna were both excellent, but the chicken mousse is a real head-scratcher since it didn’t really taste like chicken. I will warn you that they can be a bit messy, but otherwise worth ordering.

Margherita Flatbread with Basil Pesto and Balsamic Drizzle (V) – $5.25

 width=

Perhaps a little heavy on the balsamic, the flatbread is fine and at least a good value for the size of it. Nothing special, but a decent snack.

Pop’t Art: Abstract Designed Sugar Cookie with Chocolate Hazelnut Filling (V) – $4.00

 width=

It looks like a Pop Tart, but it’s a sugar cookie… I’m sure kids will like this, but this dessert just confuses me. It wasn’t bad, I’m just not sure why it exists. It even has a filling like a Pop Tart (chocolate hazelnut flavored) but again, it has the flavor of a sugar cookie filled with icing.

White Chocolate Figment Puzzle on an Artist Palette – $6.50

 width=

Perhaps the most fun item of the festival is this white chocolate Figment puzzle. Not only do you get to put the Puzzle together, but you can than create your own edible art with it. This should be something that any child will just have a blast making (and eating). Plus, how adorable is it?

 width=

The chocolate was of a good quality too, so you’ll be happy to know that it tastes as good as it looks.

Mary Blair White Chocolate Art Painting with Chocolate Easel (GF) (V) – $7.00

 width=

One of the more photogenic items will be the vast array of chocolate art on chocolate easels. At this kiosk, you can obtain the Mary Blair “it’s a small world” version.

 width=

Again, I think is quality chocolate, but you may find it hard to eat something so pretty.

Neapolitan Beer Flight – $9.00: Breckenridge Nitro Vanilla Porter – $4.00, Young’s Double Chocolate Stout – $4.00, 3 Daughters Queens Court Strawberry Blonde Nitro – $4.00

 width=

 width=

The Strawberry Blonde Nitro was a favorite of nearly everyone in our group for its natural sweet flavor. I personally loved the Double Chocolate Stout, but these types of drinks are usually my speed. The Nitro Vanilla Porter was also solid, so I’d suggest going for the flight over individual, larger beers here.

Pomegranate Mule featuring the Ginger People Ginger Beer and Van Gogh Vodka – $9.50

 width=

The Pomegranite Mule was quite refreshing, with a flavor akin to a sangria. You get a fair sized drink with this one and it was our favorite drink that we’ve had so far, so we recommend that you try it should you stop by this location during the festival.

REVIEW: “Decadent Delights” Food Studio – Epcot International Festival of the Arts 2017

Welcome to a food studio review for the Epcot International Festival of the Arts, taking place in the park Friday-Monday from January 13th through February 20th, 2017. • Deconstructed Purple Sweet Potato Pie, Salted Caramel, Bourbon-soaked Cake and Marshmallow Whipped Cream – $6.50
  • Artist Palette Jumbo Chocolate Chip Cookie – $5.50

Beverages:

  • Dasani Bottled Water – $3.00

 width=

Deconstructed Purple Sweet Potato Pie, Salted Caramel, Bourbon-soaked Cake and Marshmallow Whipped Cream – $6.50

 width=

This was, far and away, the strangest dessert I have ever had at Walt Disney World. I think this is what astronauts eat for dessert. It’s made from this strange, gelatinous, purple mousse that tastes like sweet potato pie, but the texture is very much like toothpaste (and no, I don’t eat toothpaste). The flavor wasn’t bad, but I’m not sure I could deal with the texture of it again. Can I order just a bourbon-soaked cake?

Dark Chocolate S’mores: Homemade Graham Cracker, Vanilla Kisses and White Chocolate “Fire” – $6.50

 width=

The S’mores dish was solid and a good option if you enjoy dark chocolate over marshmallow. It wasn’t the greatest S’mores dessert I have ever had, but it was rather enjoyable.

 width=

There’s nothing really crazy about it, it’s just a dark chocolate dome and cake, with marshmallow and a graham cracker crust, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Crisp Caramel Chocolate Mousse Bar, Flavored Merengue Kisses and Passion Fruit Sauce – $6.75

 width=

My personal favorite from this booth was the Chocolate Mousse Bar, and not just because it looked like something from Tiffins. The mousse bar itself was perfect (rich, chocolate flavor), and the various accompaniments all paired well with a with of the bar.
