The Worst Dishes at the 2016 Epcot International Food and Wine Festival – Tom’s Top 7

Welcome to another edition of Tom’s Top 7,  a continuing countdown of my favorite (and occasionally, least favorite) things at the Disney Parks around the globe. Why seven? Well, we explained that last time

jason-sharp

Anyway, last time talked about the new items you should be ordering at the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival for 2016 now underway. I decided this week it might be fun to talk about what you should NOT be eating from the 33 collective booths and kiosks around the park. Please, stay away from the following dishes…

1. Jamaican Beef Patty – Islands of the Caribbean

Jamaican Beef Patty - Islands of the Caribbean

Jamaican Beef Patty – Islands of the Caribbean

Jamaican Beef Patties are on ion my favorite things to make at home if I’m going to cook something frozen. Also, my old home in Bronx, New York was often only steps away from a small chain of restaurants who actually served these wonderful meat pockets, so it was something that was always available to me. These puck like things that may actually be test MagicBands, are not Jamaican Beef Patties. They lack the flaky crust and the spicy flavor of a traditional offering. These were the most disappointing new offering of 2017.

2. Chicken Gyro – Greece

Chicken Gyro - Greece

Chicken Gyro – Greece

This is one of the least remarkable dishes at the festival. There is barely any meat, barely any flavor, and barely any reason to order this.

3. Beef Empanada – Patagonia

Beef Empanada - Patagonia

Beef Empanada – Patagonia

In my opinion, the most overrated dish at the entire festival. People seem to love this, which I can’t understand. It is just so bland and flavorless.

4. Chicken and Dumplings – Farm Fresh

Chicken and Dumplings - Farm Fresh

Chicken and Dumplings – Farm Fresh

If Cracker Barrel is serving better chicken and dumplings than you, you probably should just not serve them. A rather small portion and it just tasted off. Other members in our party liked these more than I did, but I just don’t get it.

5. Taco de Camaron – Mexico

Taco de Camaron - Mexico

Taco de Camaron – Mexico

While you will NEED to stop here to get the flan, the Mexico booth is otherwise forgettable. I can’t even remember what this taco tasted like, nor have I ever heard anyone clamor to go to the Mexico booth for anything other than dessert.

6. Pennete alla Parmigiana & Spezzatino alla Toscana – Italy

Pennete alla Parmigiana - Italy

Pennete alla Parmigiana – Italy

Spezzatino alla Toscana - Italy

Spezzatino alla Toscana – Italy

I’m cheating and putting both non-dessert items from Italy because they are both equally bad (also I’m the boss and I make the rules around here). The people running the Italy booth aren’t even trying. These both tasted like microwaveable meals from Lean Cuisine, and that might be more of an insult to Lean Cuisine. I can’t fathom how the company that runs Tutto Italia and Via Naploli could pump out such garbage.

7. (Yeah, Seven) Vegan Korean BBQ – South Korea

(Yeah, Seven) Vegan Korean BBQ - South Korea

(Yeah, Seven) Vegan Korean BBQ – South Korea

There are some vegan dishes at Food and Wine that are actually quite good. This is not one of them. There was an agreement between myself, Tom Bricker of the Disney Tourist Blog, and Josh of EasyWDW.com that we would most equate the flavor of this dish to what we think dog food might taste like. That, or cat food, but one off the two for sure. Under no circumstance should anyone eat this, ever.

You’ll be glad you didn’t!

If you avoid these 7 offerings while at the Food and Wine Festival this year, you will likely survive. Next time, I’ll go over 7 returning favorites of the Festival that are an absolute must. Now get eating!

Also, be sure to utilize our quick guide to the Festival, which will tell you what to get and what to skip at each booth!

The Best New Dishes from the 2016 Epcot Food & Wine Festival – Tom’s Top 7

Welcome to the very first edition of Tom’s Top 7, which will be a continuing countdown of my favorite (and occasionally, least favorite) things at the Disney Parks around the globe. Why seven? Well, because it’s kind of been our schtick over the last few years after constantly quoting the great Bill McKim from the original Test Track pre-show:

Anyway, with the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival for 2016 now underway, I decided it would be fun to talk about what you should be eating from the 33 collective booths and kiosks that will be inhabiting the park for just a few weeks. I managed to eat and drink every single new offering from the Festival this year, so let’s talk about what I think are the seven brand new dishes you can’t miss if you’ll be dining your way around the world this Fall.

1. Piggy Wings – Craft Beers

Piggy Wings - Craft Beers

Piggy Wings – Craft Beers

Like me, you will probably meander into Craft Beers looking for something to drink (or to take in that 80’s EPCOT Center goodness you can only find inside the old Odyssey center). That being said, Craft Beers is home to one of my favorite dishes this year, the Piggy Wings. These pork wings remind me a lot of the wings from Ohana, but replacing the ubiquitous chicken with tender pork. I’ve already had these twice…

2. Peanut Butter and White Chocolate Mousse – The Chew Collective

Peanut Butter and White Chocolate Mousse - The Chew Collective

Peanut Butter and White Chocolate Mousse – The Chew Collective

Another dish I’ve already ordered twice is this Peanut Butter and White Chocolate Mousse with a caramel drizzle. I love any dessert with peanut butter, but the light mousse mixed with the caramel flavoring is just about perfect.

3. Chilled Tomato Gazpacho – Greenhouse Guru

Chilled Tomato Gazpacho - Greenhouse Guru

Chilled Tomato Gazpacho – Greenhouse Guru

I’m not sure that I’ve ever had Gazpacho, but if it is this good, I will be ordering more of this in the future. Featuring lump crab meat, the chilled tomato sauce has a nice spicy kick to it.

4. Seared Scallop – Wine and Dine Studio

Seared Scallop - Wine and Dine Studio

Seared Scallop – Wine and Dine Studio

Scallops can be pretty hit or miss at the Festival in my experience, and this one is a definite hit. Cooked perfectly, the scallop is nicely accented by the celery root puree, Brussels sprouts, and wild mushrooms.

5. Flan de Chocolate Abuelita – Mexico

Flan de Chocolate Abuelita - Mexico

Flan de Chocolate Abuelita – Mexico

My favorite dessert at the festival this year, the Flan is a rare highlight of the otherwise forgettable Mexico booth. This Mexican custard is light and airy with a delicious and rich chocolate flavor.

6. Ricotta and Zucchini Ravioli – The Chew Collective

Ricotta and Zucchini Ravioli - The Chew Collective

Ricotta and Zucchini Ravioli – The Chew Collective

Vegetarian dishes usually aren’t my thing, but this particular ravioli is a real winner, The ricotta cheese and zucchini are blended together nicely for a flavor combination you won’t soon forget.

7. (Yeah, Seven) Smoked Beef Brisket and Pimento Cheese – Hops and Barley

Smoked Beef Brisket and Pimento Cheese - Hops and Barley

Smoked Beef Brisket and Pimento Cheese – Hops and Barley

As you may know, the Smokehouse booth offered at the America Adventure during their Flower and Garden Festival is a favorite of mine. I “LURVE” me some good barbecue (is this how you get better SEO?). This smoked brisket offered at Hops and Barley is better than some of the previous offerings from Smokehouse, delivering delicious and tender briskly, topped with a little onion, served over a nice-sized piece of garlic toast. I will be back for this again and again.

You’ll be glad you did!

If you get these 7 new offerings while at the Food and Wine Festival this year, you will without a doubt have a phenomenal time. Next time, I’ll go over 7 returning favorites of the Festival that are an absolute must. Now get eating!

Also, be sure to utilize our quick guide to the Festival, which will tell you what to get and what to skip at each booth!

New Experiences Coming to the International Food & Wine Festival!

0728ZZ_1250MS-640x426

Epcot has added a few new flavors to how guests can enjoy the annual International Food & Wine Festival! It was announced today that Disney will be adding two new experiences for guests during the 2014 festival. The first of the two add-ons sounds like a cross between Epcot’s After Hours Wind Down and Animal Kingdom’s Harambe Nights:

Epcot Food & Wine Festival – Late Nights LIVE! street party will run from 9:45 p.m. to 1 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday during the festival between the United Kingdom Pavilion and World Showcase Plaza. The event includes six tastes (food and beverages) from select marketplaces, live music, entertainment, and a DJ.

The cost of the street party will be $79, plus tax. Epcot admission is not required for entry after 9pm.

It was also announced that for guests staying at a Disney Resorts Hotel, a new Premium Package will be available:

Now for some brand-new “Premium” fun! From noon-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday during a select festival period (September 22-November 6), the Epcot Food & Wine Festival Premium Package is an opportunity for guests staying in a Walt Disney World Resort hotel (or the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin hotels) to sip and savor in style. The package includes an in-room gift with wine for guests 21 and older, a festival wine glass, truffles and credential for the Premium Package Areas at the festival – plus an Epcot International Food & Wine Festival MagicBand and a $50 Disney Gift Card to start the fun. The credential gives access to 10 VIP “Premium Package Areas” around World Showcase Promenade where you can order items from Marketplaces and have them delivered to you – no waiting in line. You can also bring your favorite marketplace treats into the Premium Package Areas and just relax. The package also includes one admission to Epcot Food & Wine Festival – Late Nights LIVE!, which you can attend on Tuesday or Thursday night.

The cost of the Premium package is $199, plus tax and theme park admission.

When you do the math for the premium package, it certainly seems like a great deal. A gift card, admission to the street party, a magic band, wine, and perhaps best of all- a place to eat! Anyone who has been to Food & Wine knows how valuable it is to have a decent place to put your tray down. Add in the fact that you can bypass some of the lines from the Marketplace by having the food delivered to you and this sounds like a home run.

We’d love to know what you think about these new experiences. Let us know in the comments if you’ll be checking out either of these new experiences at this year’s Food & Wine Festival.

Dirk Wallen’s 8/28/13 WDW Photo Report
