BREAKING: Permits Filed and Building Placement Revealed for Tron Coaster and Main Street Theater

It’s been a busy week in the world of permitting for Walt Disney World construction projects. Today the permits for both the TRON Lightcycle Power Run coaster in Tomorrowland and the new Main Street Theater in the Magic Kingdom were filed. width=

Because both of these projects are actually in Tomorrowland, they have been combined into one permit. The new Main Street Theater will be located behind the former Galaxy Palace Theater in Tomorrowland, but it will be accessible from Main Street U.S.A.

The permits show the placement and size of the TRON Lightcycle Power Run show building (labeled “MK2”), almost due north of Space Mountain. The building will occupy a huge footprint, even larger than Space Mountain. It will be very visible (as Space Mountain is now) from the Top of the World Lounge at Bay Lake Tower and the California Grill at the Contemporary Resort.

The Main Street Theater (labeled “MK1”) will occupy most of what is now a parking lot southwest of the Carousel of Progress and behind the now-shuttered Galaxy Palace Theater.

BREAKING: Blockbuster New Attraction Coming to Disneyland Paris in 2024

A “major new attraction”is coming to Disneyland Paris Resort in 2024, according to Forbes. While there are no details on what the new attraction will be or which of the two Paris parks will host it, it is part of a $2.4 billion investment in the parks following the Walt Disney Company taking full ownership of the resort earlier this year. Rumors have circulated recently that a Tron Lightcycle Power Run Coaster, similar to the one in Shanghai and the one coming to the Magic Kingdom by 2021, may be coming to Disneyland Paris. This would likely not be the blockbuster new attraction, as that should be something larger and original for Disneyland Paris.

 width=

According to recent filings, “capital expenditure included in the business plan represents a total of €2.1 billion ($2.4 billion in US dollars) over the period. This includes in particular the renovation of two hotels and attractions, as well as a major new attraction in 2024.”

Forbes reports that the information was disclosed in the cash tender offer document that was issued in connection with Disney’s takeover of the resort. The documents are connected to evaluating the company’s share value as part of its de-listing from the Euronext stock exchange. The filings indicate that Disney projects a 4% growth in annual revenue through 2026, with an 11.3% underlying profit margin through 2026 and rising to 15% four years later.

 height=

The documents also reference major hotel renovations to Hotel New York, which will close in October 2018 to become Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel, as well as to the Disneyland Hotel. Last month, Disney opened Villages Nature Paris, a new “nature” resort in collaboration with tourism and hotel operator Pierre & Vacances-Center Parcs.

 width=

In addition, “Marvel-themed attractions and entertainment” will be coming to the Walt Disney Studios park. Those attractions include a Marvel Stunt Show that will replace Cinemagique, which closed in March, as part of a special Marvel Summer of Superheroes from June 10th to September 30th that will feature new entertainment including character appearances by Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Spider-Man, Star-Lord and Black Widow.

Other rumors that have circulated regarding developments at the resort include a conversion of the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror to Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission Breakout in the Walt Disney Studios park. Tower of Terror is expected to close in September 2018 and reopen as Mission Breakout in March 2019. According to Forbes, Mission Breakout in Disney’s California Adventure has become the “highest rated thrill ride in the whole of [Disney’s] California resort.” An entire land based on MARVEL characters is expected to be part of the investment in the Resort.

Other recent changes to the resort include a 3D update to Star Tours, a new finale for Big Thunder Mountain, and the new Disney Stars on Parade daytime parade featuring a fire-breathing Malificent dragon like that in the Magic Kingdom’s Festival of Fantasy Parade.

Attendance has already started rising at the resort, up 5% for the six months ending March 31 from the same period a year before, revenue increasing $21.7 million, and occupancy up 3% to 81%.

RUMOR: Tron Lightcycle Power Run Coaster Coming to Disneyland Paris

According to Looopings, Disney has requested an offer on the construction of the Tron Lightcycle Power Run coaster for Disneyland Paris from the Dutch attraction builder Vekoma. Vekoma has built the ride for Shanghai Disneyland and will do so for the upcoming Magic Kingdom version as well.

It is unclear where the attraction would be built if true, but one would expect Walt Disney Studios Paris would be a prime candidate considering the very different theme of Discoveryland compared to other Tomorrowland areas. It is also possible that the attraction has been ordered, but could be themed to another franchise (at one point considered for a Captain America motorcycle ride).

This would be the first major investment in the parks since the TWDC buyout earlier this year, besides the announced changes to Hotel New York.

From new lodging and transportation options that make getting around more fun, to original storytelling and immersive experiences based on guests’ favorites, Disney continues to provide unparalleled vacation destinations for guests across the globe in even more exciting ways than ever before.

Immersive Theme Park Experiences and Attractions

An Unprecedented First Look at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Fans were elated to hear their Star Wars stories will come to life in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, the newly announced name for the Star Wars-themed lands. Chapek shared exciting new details and a glimpse inside the two anchor attractions, including one that puts guests right in the middle of a battle between the First Order and the Resistance where guests will feel like they are inside a hangar bay on a Star Destroyer. Guests will also have the chance to fly the Millennium Falcon, where each guest is critical to the mission’s success. Chapek also revealed many characters that guests will meet, including BB-8, Chewbacca, Rex and Kylo Ren. Representing the largest single-themed land expansion at 14 acres each, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will open in 2019, with the first land debuting at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, then at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando.

Timeless Transformation of Epcot Revealed

Looking ahead to the 50th Anniversary of Walt Disney World, there are grand plans to complete the transformation that started with the debut of New Fantasyland in 2014. Chapek announced exciting plans across Epcot to realize the original vision of the park while making it more timeless and relevant than ever before.

Patterned after the number one family attraction at Disneyland Paris, Ratatouille will be added in an all-new space in the France pavilion at World Showcase.

AT D23 EXPO 2017, DISNEY PARKS CHAIRMAN BOB CHAPEK ANNOUNCES

Epcot will also see the addition of a brand new E-ticket attraction based on the rockin’ and action-packed world of Guardians of the Galaxy, the next step in how guests can encounter these characters at Walt Disney World Resort.

In Future World, a new Green Mission at Mission: SPACE will take guests on a stunning tour around the Earth, and an updated Orange Mission will make the trip to Mars even more spectacular.

Adjacent to Mission: Space will be a new restaurant that will invite guests to travel high above the earth for an unforgettable dining experience.

More Thrills than Ever Planned for Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Magic Kingdom

Disney remains at the cutting edge of deeply immersive, creative storytelling that draws guests into new worlds, and it is a legacy that lives on in every new Disney Parks experience.

The first-ever Mickey-themed ride-through attraction, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, will come to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. With a new original story and lovable attraction theme song, this new state-of-the-art ride-through attraction will take guests on a journey inside the wacky and unpredictable world of Disney Channel’s Emmy Award-winning “Mickey Mouse” cartoon shorts using new technologies that transform the flat cartoon world into an incredible dimensional experience.

Chapek also announced that the highest rated attraction at Shanghai Disneyland is coming to Walt Disney World Resort. A thrilling, TRON-themed attraction will be added in a new area near Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom.

Additionally, a new live entertainment theater coming to Main Street, U.S.A., based on the iconic Willis Theater in 1920s Kansas City, will bring world-class entertainment to the world’s most popular park.

Pixar Fun at the Happiest Place on Earth

In addition to announcing the summer 2018 opening of Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Chapek was joined by Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios John Lasseter to unveil plans for Pixar Pier at Disney California Adventure, where the pier will take on a brand new look as more favorite Pixar characters and stories come to life, from The Incredibles, to Inside Out to even more Toy Story. Chapek also announced there is more Pixar in store during Pixar Fest at Disneyland Resort. Starting in 2018, this limited-time offering will include a new fireworks spectacular as well as special characters and entertainment moments.

As part of the celebration, the Pixar Play Parade will return to Disneyland Resort – this time at Disneyland Park – and the fan favorite Paint the Night Parade will move to Disney California Adventure, one of Disney’s longest parade routes.

Disney Cruise Line to Nearly Double the Size of its Fleet by 2023

Chapek surprised the crowd by announcing that Disney Cruise Line will add one more ship in its expansion to take family cruise vacations to a whole new level, giving the line a total of seven (yeah, seven!) ships. Joining the other two new ships that were announced just last year, all three new ships will be powered by one of the cleanest-burning fuels available, liquefied natural gas. When all three ships are completed by 2023, Disney Cruise Line will have nearly doubled the size of the fleet.

Immersive Hotel Concepts

Among the announcements were projects that infuse even more exciting experiences for resort hotel guests in ways that are only possible at Disney.

To the delight of fans, Chapek confirmed ambitious plans to create the most experiential concept ever in an immersive Star Wars-themed hotel at Walt Disney World Resort. Dedicated entirely to the galaxy of Star Wars, it will be a one-of-a-kind experience where a luxury resort meets a multi-day adventure in a galaxy far, far away.

Adding to the immersive resort hotel slate, Disney’s Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel at Disneyland Paris will transport guests to the action-packed world of Super Heroes, including Iron Man, The Avengers, Spider-Man and more. Guests will be able to explore the Marvel Universe through its comic art, films, Super Hero costumes and more, displayed in the style of a contemporary art gallery.

Leading up to the July 17 opening of Copper Creek Villas & Cabins, Chapek also announced the proposed 15th Disney Vacation Club property, Disney Riviera Resort, coming to Walt Disney World Resort near Epcot.

Seamless Transportation Options

Completing the immersion so guests never have to leave the story while on a Disney vacation, Chapek announced plans that will make getting around Walt Disney World Resort even more fun.

An all-new Minnie Van service will provide a point-to-point transportation service in a way that only Disney can do, giving guests an even more seamless resort vacation from start to finish.

Additionally, a whole new transportation system called Disney Skyliner will give guests a birds-eye view of Walt Disney World Resort. This brand new system will connect Disney’s Art of Animation, Pop Century and Caribbean Beach resorts, as well as the proposed new Disney Riviera Resort, with Disney’s Hollywood Studios and the International Gateway at Epcot.

Honoring the Heritage of Disney Parks

In a memorable tribute to the legacy of beloved attractions, entertainment and characters, fans enjoyed a special one-time-only performance of entertainment numbers from Disney Parks through the years. Following the return of the Main Street Electrical Parade, Chapek hinted there are even more fan favorites in store from Disney Parks’ storied past.

CONFIRMED: TRON Lightcycle Power Run Rollercoaster to Replace Tomorrowland Speedway at the Magic Kingdom

In October of 2016, we told you that Walt Disney World was eyeing the addition of the popular TRON Lightcycle Power Run attraction from Shanghai Disneyland, and in April 2017 we updated our rumor when preliminary budgeting teams from Florida were sent out to Shanghai to take a look at the attraction. Well, with the D23 Expo just days away, it now seems certain that the attraction will be announced on Saturday, July 15th.

TRON Lightcycle Power Run will open at the Magic Kingdom just before the park’s 50th birthday (probably 2020/21), replacing the Tomorrowland Speedway attraction which opened in 1971 as the Grand Prix Raceway. The Speedway will likely close sometime in 2018 to make way for this construction.

RUMOR: TRON Lightcycle Power Run Roller Coaster Close to Green Light for Walt Disney World, Disneyland

A few months ago, we told you that it was rumored that the popular TRON Lightcycle Power Run attraction from Shanghai Disneyland would be making its way to Walt Disney World sometime in the next 5 years. Well, it seems the project is close to approval, but it may also be heading to California…

According to sources, budget and preliminary design teams for Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts have been sent out to Shanghai to make the project into a reality here in the United States. The decision to move forward with a TRON reboot/sequel has likely heavily influenced the decision to go through with the attraction domestically.

Walt Disney World is planning to build the attraction in Tomorrowland ahead of October 1st, 2021, the start of the 50th anniversary celebration for the entire resort. This would ensure major new additions in each of the four parks leading up to what should be a milestone event lasting 18-24 months. The enhancements at Epcot should begin by that time, and Star Wars land, Toy Story Land, and Pandora: The World of AVATAR will all be open and operating, leaving Magic Kingdom needing something big and new. Currently, the attraction would sit on the site of the Tomorrowland Speedway, but the former Galaxy Palace Theater space (now cast member parking) is a possibility.

TRON Lightcycle Power Run, Shanghai Disney Resort

At Disneyland, rumors indicate that the former Innoventions building (now home to Star Wars Launch Bay) in Tomorrowland would be the site, allowing the outdoors portion of the coaster to soar beautifully over the Tomorrowland skyline. That being said, some believe the coaster will be repurposed for the MARVEL-themed land at Disney California Adventure, perhaps taking the place of the long-rumored Captain America launch roller coaster. Either way, expect this ride system to show up at the Disneyland Resort around the same time as Walt Disney World unveils theirs.

As always with rumors and attractions in the design phase, things can change, or even be cancelled entirely. Based on how much we are hearing about this already, I would be very surprised to not see this roller coaster “rez” in the U.S. sometime soon.
