Is The “Frozen” Sequel A Good Idea?

frozen-2

According to BuzzFeed.com, although a “Frozen” sequel is in the works, the directors don’t really know much about it.

You cannot deny the success of the movie “Frozen,” but without a doubt, there are many people that don’t understand its popularity. It seems even the directors and co-creators, Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, had their doubts with the original, the upcoming short and the sequel to “Frozen”:

“It was the scary thing of, ‘How do you follow Frozen up?’” Lee told BuzzFeed News. “We were scared. I don’t think we even began to understand what people liked about the movie.”

“I don’t think you can ever quite get your head around it,” Lee continued. “And just when you think you’re starting to figure out why, you realize you have no idea. You go out to dinner and there’s kids wearing a ‘I Like Warm Hugs’ T-shirt and it hits you again. Two years ago, we were writing that and wondering if kids would even like this character. Every day we’re still surprised. I don’t know if I’ll ever understand it.”

“To have something like this take off is unreal,” Buck added. “And to see it and hear about it all the time, you kind of pinch yourself. It’s kind of an out-of-body experience. Like, ‘Whoa. We did that.’”

Eventually Buck and Lee agreed to, at least, brainstorm possible ideas for a Frozen short. A lot of the early pitches that emerged were Olaf-centric stories because, Buck said, “it just felt like he was perfect for a short.” But the filmmakers and their team quickly came to realize the story had to focus on Frozen’s most popular relationship: the one between sisters Anna and Elsa, especially since they could finally have some fun with a curse-free Elsa.

After much brainstorming, head story artist Mark Smith pitched a very simple idea: What if Elsa has a cold? That scenario sent a lightning bolt of excitement and enthusiasm through the room, and soon enough, Frozen Fever was born.

The short — which debuts before Disney’s Cinderella, in theaters March 13 — takes place a few months after the events of the first film and sees Elsa planning a birthday party for Anna. But when Elsa gets a cold that throws her powers for a loop, Olaf, Kristoff, and even Sven band together to help the ice queen.

Rumors of Frozen 2 have swirled since the original turned into a full-fledged phenomenon, with countless reports claiming a sequel was already in the works. “It’s been in the press that we are doing it, and we would ask each other, ‘Are we?’” Buck said with a laugh, refuting the rumors. “They’d have a date and they’d have a cast and it was like, OK…”

“It all comes down to the story,” Lee added. “Like with the short, it was so daunting until we found the story. Then it was all of the things it usually is and we were thinking of every emotion and moment and feeling. I think that’s all we can do. Until we find our way into what’s next, emotionally, it will feel too big. We just finished the short two weeks ago. One year ago, it was a lot to even think about doing a short. We were quite tired. We don’t really know what it’s like to stop for a minute and think about what we want to do next.”

And while both Buck and Lee are fairly certain they will eventually return to the world of Frozen they love so much, they also like the idea of going out on top. “There is a bit of that drop-the-mic thing,” Buck said. “Just go, [drops mic] ‘I don’t know what else to do.’”

Maybe they are right and should they just go out on top. And to answer my own question, if Disney only cares about making money, of course it’s a good idea. “Frozen 2” will make a ton of money regardless if the story is worse than Disney’s “Home On The Range.”

It does make me worry that we are going to get another sequel that will be more of a cash grab instead of a good story and follow up to the original.

Disney started making sequels to their classic animated movies under Michael Eisner’s reign, even though Walt himself was adamantly against sequels. Those sequels where without a doubt cash grabs. For the most part, they were horribly written, horribly animated and the songs were less than memorable. I remember direct to DVD sequels to the Lion King, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Beauty And The Beast, Lady And The Tramp, Cinderella, Peter Pan and may other sequels to classic Disney animated films and none of them added anything to the story. If anything they cheapened the overall experience and made you think, “Is that what really happened to them after the original movie? That stinks.”

The only sequels that I felt matched or even surpassed the original story were the “Toy Story” sequels. I remember that “Toy Story 2” was originally supposed to be released directly to DVD, but after it was shown to people higher up in the company, they decided that they needed to release “Toy Story 2” in theaters. Probably because it was actually a good movie.

It seems that even if a movie is critically panned, as long as a movie makes a ton of money, there will be a sequel. I’m looking at you “Cars 3.” Let’s hope that they do put some real care and consideration into the story for “Frozen 2” and we dont get another sequel that should have never been made.

INSIDE OUT

Disney/Pixar just released the second trailer for their upcoming animated film, “Inside Out”:

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seMwpP0yeu4]

From an adventurous balloon ride above the clouds to a monster-filled metropolis, Academy Award®-winning director Pete Docter (“Monsters, Inc.,” “Up”) has taken audiences to unique and imaginative places. In Disney•Pixar’s original movie “ Inside Out,” he will take us to the most extraordinary location of all—inside the mind.

Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school. “Inside Out” opens on June 19th, 2015.

Chris Evans Visits The Seattle Children’s Hospital Dressed As “Captain America”

real-heroes-hospital-visit-07

Chris Evans, “Captain America” and Chris Pratt, “Starlord” had a bet during this year’s Superbowl that if the Seattle Seahawks won, Chris Evans would go visit the kids at The Seattle Childern’s Hospital dressed as Captain America and if the New England Patriots won, Chris Pratt would visit the kids over at Christopher’ Haven dressed as “Starlord” from “Guardians Of The Galaxy.” The Patriots won and Chris Pratt honored the bet by making his appearance at Christopher’s Haven a few weeks ago. Showing good sportsmanship and thinking of the children, Chris Evans recently appeared at The Seattle Children’s Hospital dressed as Captain America with his newest uniform from “Avengers: Age Of Ultron.” Chris Pratt also joined Evans to spread some much needed joy. Really great guys, the both of them.

Robert Downey Jr. Dressed As Tony Stark Delivers A Bionic Arm To A Young Fan

2

Just look at the look of shock on this kids face when he enters that room and sees Tony Stark! Really great stuff! Alex is a 7 year old boy who was born with a partially developed right arm. Alex is also a big Iron Man fan. With no cost to his family, Albert Manero created a bionic arm for young Alex and it was delivered by Tony Stark himself. Not only did Tony bring Alex’s bionic arm, but he also brought along Iron Man’s own gauntlet:

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEx5lmbCKtY]

When I wrote the first story above, it made me wonder why Robert Downey Jr, being the most popular actor potraying a Marvel supehero, has never visited children in a hospital like Chris Evans and Chris Pratt, and they seem to do it very often. Christian Bale (“The Dark Knight”) has also gone out of his way many times to make children who are sick have one of the happiest days of their lives. So it definitely made me feel good to see Downey do this, especially the way he did it. Made me glad to Downey’s face when Alex told Downey he knew his name was Robert.

Disney To Make A Live Action “Dumbo” Movie; Tim Burton To Direct

Dumbo-image-dumbo-36762923-1600-1198

The Hollywood Reporter just announced that Tim Burton will be directing a live action version of the Disney classic animated feature, “Dumbo.”

In the latest move by the studio as it continues to make live-action versions of its animated classics, Disney has tapped the Big Eyes helmer, Tim Burton, to take on the tale of a baby circus elephant who is made fun of for his large ears, based on the iconic 1941 film.

As THR exclusively reported, Transformers franchise writer Ehren Kruger penned the script. The film will use a mix of CGI and live action to bring the classic elephant story to life and will add a unique family story that parallels Dumbo’s journey. Justin Springer, who worked on Tron: Legacy as well as Oblivion, is producing with Kruger.

Disney’s latest live-action makeover, Cinderella, starring Lily James, opens this weekend. The studio has had strong success with its live-action versions of classic tales, including Burton’s re-imagined Alice in Wonderland, which grossed a staggering $1.02 billion. And after Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie as the iconic villainess, opened in May 2014, it went on to earn a stunning $758.4 million worldwide.

Yes, you heard correctly, “TRON 3” has apparently been green lit by Disney and will begin filming in Vancouver this year.

According to Vancity Buzz entertainment contributor Lindsay Barker, Walt Disney Pictures has green lighted the third film in the Tron series. Filming is scheduled to begin on October 5, 2015.

The project has been in development since the success of the 2010 film, which raked in $400 million with a $170 million budget.

At this time, only Garrett Hedlund has been confirmed to return to the cast. In the previous film, Hedlund starred as Sam Flynn, the son of series original character Kevin Flynn (played by Jeff Bridges) who was stuck in the Grid’s digital world for two decades. The character Quorra, a skilled Grid warrior and confidante to Kevin, was portrayed by Olivia Wilde.

SPOILERS: Japanese Trailer For “Tomorrowland” Shows More Disney Attractions; Hints At Walt Disney’s Connection To The Film

14a

A Japanese trailer for “Tomorrowland” was released and displays new footage that ties the movie to Walt Disney, Disneyland, and the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair. Unfortunately, the trailer was pulled this morning…

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjSDLA6ygLg]

The trailer shows young Frank Walker (George Clooney’s character) discovering a secret entrance while on the ride, “it’s a small world” that apparently leads to the futuristic world of “Tomorrowland.” Two characters in this trailer reveal that Tomorrowland, found in Disneyland, is actually a cover for the real thing. They explain that geniuses like Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison and Walt Disney worked together in order to change the world and create a real “Tomorrowland.”

Here are some images that I captured from the trailer showing lots of new footage, very familiar places and some memorabilia from a very famous movie:
