Review: King of the Wild Frontier

I was never a huge fan of westerns, but for some reason Davy Crockett always intrigued me. As a kid, I would want to watch the Disney Davy Crockett movies over and over. So I was excited when I saw the blurry brown outline of a man with a hat on the side of a 9″ Park 6 box sometime last year and had the hopes it was really Davy. Well, it of course was.

This 9″ Park 6 Davy Crockett retails for $44.95 and was designed by Casey Jones. As simple as this figure is, every detail on Davy is done flawlessly. It really captures the look and feel of the old west and Davy Crockett.

By far, the biggest surprise was the hat. Not that it was there, or that it was removable. Both those facts we  knew. But the detail went above and beyond what it needed to be to be acceptable. Instead of just tapering off, the tail is actually layered with the jigsaw pattern plastic.

The hat also has a decent weight to it. That is quickly evident when picking up the box at the store.

Again, the figure is simple, but every step designed by Casey seems like a natural and perfect fit. you can see the knife on Davy’s belt and the detail on his shoes..

On his other side is a drum. The colors and shading are done very well throughout the piece.

This Davy is certainly worth picking up for any Disney fan. As for me, this easily makes it into my top 5 favorite 9″ Vinylmation. Sam the Eagle, Space Mountain 35th, Tiki Room, Sully and now Davy Crockett. I was also lucky enough to pick up a signed version of this figure. Casey signed the window on the box with a bold gold pen. Thanks again for leaving those at D-Street. He’s not one of the more popular figures these days, but this Vinyl is a winner to me. What do you think about this one?

Doug in Hand

I got my Disney Afternoons Doug two pack yesterday. The package was a bit weather beaten, but the set was safe inside. The box art matches all the other Disney Afternoons sets with a black and white theme and characters from the show on it. The figures themselves looked pretty good. I was a little disapointed that Doug could not hold the “Beets” album. It just sits there at his feet. (So I don’t think it succeeds as a good accessory.)
The backs are really extra plain on the bodies. The only detail is Porkchop’s tail.
But check out the ears.
On the front of the ears are Doug’s diary with mentions of Patti and Skeeter. Maybe those will be the two in the next set?
On the back of the ears are drawings of Doug and Porkchop as superheroes. These are Quailman and Quaildog from several episodes of the series.
In case you wondered, this set is a LE of 1000 and designed by Christopher Chapman. (And apparently made in China)

Kermit and Animal on Display at D-Street

Both the Kermit and Animal 9″ Muppet 2 figures come out on August 5 in D-Street and Online. They are both LE 1500 and retail for $44.95. There was a nice surprise on Kermit’s back by the way.

Look at that! Even tourist Kermit gets his name stitched into the back of his ear hat.

Animal’s drumstick was a little smaller than we expected from the pictures, but it’s a nice fit in his hand and with the size of the figure.

Back in Stock: Pin Trader Vinylmation Combo from Trade City 2010

Remember these? It looks like Disney dug up some of last year’s LE Pin Trader 9″ Vinylmation, 3″ Mickey Pin and Pin combos that were sold at last year’s Trade City event. We found a few for sale (as of August 4) at the Pin Traders Kiosk at Downtown Disney Orlando:

This 3 piece set retails for $99.95, was designed by Maria Clapsis and is LE 950. Here is a closer look at the 2 Vinylmation.

3″ Mickey Pin

I really like the 3″ figure in this set. It’s Mickey on the front and the back of the Vinylmation looks like the back of a Disney Pin. I actually traded my Day of the Dead Pin from my combo for this 3″ figure. So if you missed it and would like to add it to your collection, head over to Downtown Disney.

Ya, I wouldn’t mind adding this to my house. The best part is that you get to open it up and put your own Vinylmation in there. How much do you think this will sell for?

A Small Golden Gate!

The Tins are back! Well, at least they keep coming. Today vinylmation.com announced that San Francisco is getting a 3″ exclusive of the Golden Gate bridge. Very cool. This figure has no edition size and is designed by Gerald Mendez. It will be released on August 27th at the Stockton Street Disney Store.

The front has a beautiful picture of the Golden Gate Bridge.
The back has a longer shot of the bridge covered in fog.
I like how the picture of the bridge on the vinyl on this side of the box…
connects to this side of the box…
the around to this side too.

Vinylmation in Motion

What classic EPCOT attraction did you enjoy more: Horizons or World of Motion? Everybody gushes over Horizons, but for me, the humorous scenes and unforgettable characters made World of Motion the EPCOT attraction I hold closeest to my heart. So, I can’t believe I missed this Disney Parks Blog post back in January. Steven Miller, when talking about retro EPCOT merchandise, stuck this picture into the post:

Do you recognize this guy? It’s the Sea Serpent from World of Motion who is found looking right back at Christopher Columbus who is searching for the New World. Steven remarked that this figure will be in a future Park series.

An interesting piece of information I found out while looking for the picture above, is the Sea Serpent currently resides at Disney’s California Adventure!

Meet The World In Progressland posted this description on where to find the Sea Serpent: “he is hidden behind the buildings on the north side of the Hollywood Backlot, just next to the Hollywood Backlot Stage. He’s surrounded by some wooden barriers that have “Props Dept.” stenciled on them, as well as a few other props such as some Roman columns and a Chinese rickshaw.”

I’m excited about all the retro type Park Vinylmation coming out. WDW Ticket, Retro EPCOT Guide Map, Kitchen Kabaret… Check out our Park 7 Explained Page for a look at what’s ahead. What classic piece of EPCOT would you most like to see in Vinylmation?

A New Orange Bird?

Today on the Disney Parks Blog Stephen Miller showed off several of the pieces of merchandise from the upcoming Florida Project Show (Sept. 9-11th). In the very last shot he teased a cast trader that they will be seeding into boxes at the event on Sunday.

The Orange Bird with Mickey Ears. I think it’s a fun addition to our collections, especially next to the Passholder’s Exclusive Orange Bird.

What do you think?

Thanks to Konrad for pointing us here as soon as it popped up!

Also according to Michelle St. Laurent-Sheive, former Disney Design Group Artist turned Display and Design Manager with Park Event Operations, appearing at the event is a “giant, three-dimensional Orange Bird that will be placed on the World Showcase promenade welcoming guests to the event (do I smell photo opportunity?)” Let’s see how many photos next to it we can put on the site!
